It really is great paint. It's not as durable as the house paint but if need be you can use a brush on clear acrylic to cover your art and then it will withstand years of weather. I really love it! It is the most opaque and fluid waterbase black you can get. For oil base black One-Shot lettering enamel is pretty nice, but for water base, it's cel vinyl, loade with a ton of pigment.
It was great speaking with you Scot! Thanks for the great vids! Please keep making the How-To's for us newbies. Your information is invaluable. Looking forward to continuing to learn from your vids! Have a great year!
I've done wall art and canvas but never a window. It's a horse of a different color for sure. I will definitely try it again! A big huge pat on the back for you...without your videos I would have been up a creek without a paddle...i didn't even know where to begin! Thanks again for your videos!
NOTE: I don't use Behr anymore they created a "new and improved" formula, I guess to resist dirt or something, anyway it resists my cartoon colour black, so I use Miler now again primarily.
Yeah this is when I started up again. Even though this channel has been on since 2006 I had a previous you tube channel with a lot of video but I deleted the account and got off of you tube for a while. I have also been off facebook for about a year now which is good, I was spending too much time on it. Anyway this present you tube channel has been good and I decided to focus primarily on the window painting tutorials. I am enjoying it and it's creative and fun. Thanks so much for your comments, feedback...and the pictures you sent!
Thanks Eloy! I use Sherman Williams promar 200 interior eggshell for the main colors. I still use the metro recycled for the white. Only in Northwest U.S. Portland Oregon. Black I am still trying different ones because cell vinyl has been discontinued. Search in my videos about Patio paint for black for now
Stunning!!!! So easy to clean the windows!!!!!! At the start of the video when you were saying you use interior house paint I was thinking ‘How will he get that off the window afterwards!!!!’
Oh that's so wonderful. Well I have over 1000 videos for you to watch...and when you're done I have another 100 exclusive videos on patreon! I will keep you busy Mitsue! ha!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. It's been a long time since I painted did mural and that was on a brick walls. Then today I got approached to do a window by a local donut shop I love. Time to dig out the paint pants again.
Thanks Tiana, glad it was helpful. I have over 100 tutorials you might enjoy too. Thanks again for watching! If you have any questions about window painting please feel free to ask me anything about window painting here in the comments section of any of my videos.
my apoligies im sure you do its a you tube screw up im sure!!! i just couldn't find anything by just typing materials needed for window painting, very frustrating day i must say but Shes happy my mother that is we finally figured it out after 2 hours going to store to store sorry i took out any frustration on you friend!!!and youre awesome artist do enjoy your vids sir your attitude is fantastic!!!!
I just went back over it with a second coat of paint today. Maybe I didn't give it time enough to dry all the way? The boutique owner loved the window! She knew it was my first time ;) I sprayed the windows with Alcohol and wiped them clean before i started...maybe next time I'll clean them a second time and let the coats of paint dry longer. I wish I could send you a picture!
In my country we have to do window painting on the inside of the window because of outdoor weather removing paint :) So here we have to paint backwards, outline first, then highlights or shadows, then background colors,
Recently painted the windows of the little donut shop I work at on campus and our boss that runs a full sized store now wants to pay me to paint her place 😅 thank goodness for this video!
Hi Scot! First of all I want to say thank you for sharing your wisdom with us, I for sure would be banging my head on the wall trying to figure out how to do it, but from you I got to know which brushes to use, which paint and of course all the bunch of tricks you have up your sleeve and people usually won't share. I'm trying to get into this business in southern California (so far I just have painted my own windows) and that takes me to the second thing, because there's one thing that I'm missing: the black cel vinyl paint, in this video you have recommended cartoon colour company in LA, but I just find out today they are closing and don't know where else I can get it. What do you recommend? Thanks! I spent two days in row just watching and delighting in your art and fresh sense of humor and I still have a bunch of videos to watch. Thanks again for everything! Keep it going!!!
Hello Salvador, it is with great satisfaction I read your comment. I love painting window splashes, I love the art, the drawing, producing the videos and I love helping people learn the trade. I really believe now after about 4 years of teaching here on the internet that I have created a window painting revolution, a rebirth of the hand painted splash. I have heard from people all over the world such as yourself that have gained the knowledge needed to pursue a career as a window painter. Thanks for your interest Salavador! I grew up in Los Angeles and the weather is suited for window painting. Southern California is actually where my journey began as I watched my older brother paint holiday splashes in the 60's. Now at almost 62 (next month) I still carry the torch of what was once just a spark in my mind. That's awful Cartoon Colour is closing, I was just going to order another gallon of black, darn. Anyway, you can also use a paint called Aquacoat, order the black, it is a sign lettering water base paint. Another brand is Createx airbrush paint, get the opaque black. Try those and see what you think. Just like the cell vinyl they do not hold up to the rain quite as well as the house paint but it's pretty good paint. There are probably other brands of liquid black that will work too, I just have not searched the market as I always stuck with cel vinyl. Thanks for watching Salavdor and best wishes!
I am a new window painter, very interested to see what your early work and materials looked like and why you don't use the same products or do the same techniques you used to.
As time goes by I evolve and learn new things and use different paint, etc. It's all about growing. I have an introductory e book about window paining and I also send out updates for it. I plan on making a new "Getting started with Window Painting" at some point. Info on my e books is in the channel trailer.
+eyecandyart Thanks so much! I love making the videos as much as painting the windows themselves, it's another form of creativity for sure. I also create some of my own music and can sing to. Sometimes I do funny voiceovers too for the videos, it's all so fun.
+eyecandyart A lot of the music and sound fx I use is available online, copyright free stuff. You tube itself actually offers quite a bit of copyright free music available to youtubers.
Scot Campbell Thanks for sharing your craft and creativity on TH-cam. Is there a certain white paint that you recommend for base coats and overall usage from Sherman Williams?
Do you add soap to your paint prior to painting a window? I saw someone else do it. They said it helped the paint come off faster when it was time to remove it.
Also, I'm going to be painting the show floor of a car dealership and my question is....how do I paint so that its enjoyed both inside and outside guests? Double sided? Should I just paint one side of the glass?
Scot love the videos but was just wondering would a water based acrylic be ok to paint on the outside. I can't get any house paints at the minute and I live in Ireland and am worried the rain would wash it off
+Stephen Ring You can use acrylics. Once house paint is dry it is waterproof pretty much. If it gets hit hard sometimes a film comes off of it and it appears on the window as translucent drips that can be wiped away. But the colors will still be vivid. If you are still concerned you can also clear the house paint , see tutorial #5. Where I live the weather is similar to yours.
I use Golde brand high flow acrylic carbon black. It's spendy but great paint. For a more economical choice get DecoArt Patio Paint Wrought Iron Black. Comes in small 2 oz. containers but you can buy a few. Any water based polyurethane is good to clear the art. I use Poly-crylic sometimes.Usually roll on but i think yu can get spray too. I have also use oil base clear too, slightly harder to remove
@@ScotCampbellwindowpainter okay thank you and the interior yellow paint you showed we can use other paints similar to that correct , I just wanted to double check since I do not have the other paints you showed near me for window painting
I presently use Behr premium plus interior with an eggshell finish from Home Depot. You can also use Sherwin Williams Promar 200 interior eggshell or Valspar Ultra interior eggshell at Lowe's. Now in Canada or other countries I imagine these brands may not be available in which case you should get a fairly high quality interior house paint with an eggshell finish. You can also clear them with a water base polyurethane for maximum weather protection but if you have a business that is covered from rain it's not needed. For me black outlining I use Golden high flow acrylic carbon black. You can also try DecoArt patio paint wrought iron black, Ronan aquacoate black or Createx opaque black. You can order the black online. I do not pre-wash or treat the windows before painting, sometimes I wash it if it has excessive dirt but it's not common. Scot thank you for sharing your fabulous window art. Where can I get black cartoon cel paint , Now that cartoon colour stopped making it. Or what is a good substitute?
I love your work. Im thinking of taking up window painting too. My style isnt exactly like yours but your videos are inspiring and informative and i love your personality
Thank you Yolanda. Apply the paint in thin even coats. Do not try and cover it with thick gloppy paint. make the coats thin. It can take a couple coats to cover. Watch more of my videos. I have hundreds. Information on tools, paint, etc. for newcomers. For the black outlines and detail lettering I now use Golden high flow acrylic carbon black, but it's spendy. You can also use ArtDeco Patio Paint wrought iron black for outlining. You can also just make a darker version of the local color and outline with that like in some of my recent videos. It gives it an old school Disney feel. All the other paint is house paint. I presently use Behr premium plus interior with an eggshell finish from Home Depot. Not a dumb question. No not really it's hard to scratch the window. if you hold the razor right. I have washed over a thousand windows and never scratched one. If you took the corner of te bad you might br able to dragged it along the window with a lot of pressure and scratch it with a dull blade.
It's a wonderful art form. Painting on glass Roxanna is so forgiving and easy to make course corrections. Whether for fun or profit it can be very rewarding creatively. Let me know if you give it a go.
I am an artist and I got myself into doing a window mural which was my first time doing anything on windows. I went with exterior house paint but now a few months later the are getting pealing, bubbling and some sliding in a couple areas so now I am trying to get some advice on how to stop this and save the work I've done.
So I’m painting my first window tomorrow and have watched so many window painting videos on youtube to make sure I have everything down and noticed some people use roller brushes, and foam brushes. What are the differences between the roller brush, foam brushes, and regular paint brushes???
Rollers are for filling in large areas of local color, also large lettering but that takes practice. Foams brushes are for for filling in small to medium sized areas of local color. Flats are used for small to medium sized lettering, outlining and also highlights and shadows sometimes. Foam brushes are also good for outlining big stuff and also highlights and shadows.
On Dec 5, 2017 as I worked at my brothers office to earn money there was a man painting Christmas decorations on the shopping strip behind us. I walked over and talked to him. What kind of paint did he use, how much did he get for what he was doing etc. I mentioned that I too was artistic and after telling me he didn't need an assistant he said there are plenty of windows to paint and that i wouldn't hurt his business. I just so happen to have Acrylic paints in my car because I create wood art etc. So I tried my hand at an Xmas tree for my brother. I have a friend who owns a small town pharmacy with big windows and she agreed to let me practice at her place, she said "Do what ever you want, I'll pay you!" WOW !! Being a small town people driving by called her up to get my name and number, the Chiropractor in my brothers shopping strip walked over the next Monday I worked and asked if I could do something for him....I have been painting ever since!! Finally a way to make money to support my family ! I never was a sit at the computer and watch YOU TUBE to learn anything about any craft I was into..my husband found you and I have learned so much from you!!!!! I even did a trade job for shirts that say my would be company name ..I did start a FB page! Got business cards made and my own shirts!!! My head has been spinning and I haven't been happier!!! Ive had this name in my head for a long time (i'm 48) a long time .... Creative ARTickles!!!! THANK YOU SCOTT for giving me the tools to chase my dreams!!!!!
That is a great and uplifting story Christa! I am so happy that my videos influenced you in a positive way! Yes it is great to be in charge of your income and to be self employed is wonderful.Thank you for watching! Send pictures to scotcampbell@comcast.net if you like!
Hi Scot, I'm painting a window for the first time and want to use a black base with a cut away reveal. I have a few questions: 1)Do I just get Sherwin Williams interior flat black for this? 2)Do I need a white background behind that? 3)I was planning to do the paint on the inside of the window since it's in a high traffic area of Downtown. Is that okay? Thanks for your help! So fun to watch you work!
Yes, I am going to use a razor blade to make dash marks in the black base paint like this: - - - - - - -. to reveal what is inside the building. Mainly wondering what type of paint to use if I'm doing solid black
Great! Do I need to back it with a white coat or just do a layer or 2 of black? It's a large area, should I just do a foam/sponge roller? Thanks so much! love your work, you are so talented!
Is it ok to use regular Acrylic paints to paint a window ? I'm a beginner looking to start with the business I've worked with for years , and have been inspired by you since I discovered your channel
Hi Joseph. You should stay clear using regular acrylics for your local colors. Use Interior house painting with an eggshell finish. I do how use Golden high flow acrylic carbon black for the detail black lettering and outlining of characters. If you are serious about becoming a fulltime window painter you might entertain the idea of becoming a patron. It's a great investment. www.patreon.com/scotcampbell
My Mother just wanted a simple sign for her business to paint im and artist in 3d Animation, and work with Photoshop, anyways im a Generalist in digital arts and know how to move a Brush, the idea is that i came to you to know what materials to get I understand that your busy and You are a fantastic artist in your field ,but everone doesnt understand what HL paint or self primer is.i guess im a simpltion, it just would have been so simplier to tell me as a white base paint to get From Walmart or Homedepot,or lowes as a exterior enamel paint, because i ended up having to go to all of these Stores asking those employs for HL paint was and they had know frinken idea what we were talking about ,,it cost me 2hours of running up and down the road to figure this out on our own,,Thanks,,,,,its not rocket science i know but really?yes folks you can find WHITE EXTERIOR PAINT AT HOMEDEPOT!!!!!!!!!!!!thats all!wHat f Ever!!
Try and get a good brand, I would avoid paint at places like Wallmart, it has less pigment in it. I use Miller it's a local paint store. Stay away from Behr also they recently added something that repels the black I use. The black is "cartoon colour". My red comes red, it's a red base, more expensive. Buy interior paint with an eggshell or satin finish. Start with quarts. White, Yellow, Aqua, Blue, Green, Bright (somewhat darker) Pink, Lime Green. From these you can make other colors as needed. Buy the most SATURATED bright colors. Sometimes you can get fleshtones, browns, etc. in mistints, which are cheaper. I am planner on making videos later going over all this. Short inexpensive "pay per view" videos explaining all aspects of what I do with window painting from getting clients, tools, techniques and equipment to the philosophy behind the art.
Scott I have been painting windows for the holidays to make extra cash when I lived in Klamath Falls Oregon I am now in phoenix AZ and have been offered a job to paint a pawnshop window but would like some advice on what kind of paint is best for a permanent paint. Would also like to know how to remove such paint if I needed to. Case I mess it up. LOL hope you can help. Thanks.
There's a couple approaches. You can use One-Shot lettering enamel which is an oil base and you need to thin and wash with mineral spirits. It takes a bit of skill to use this paint. It also takes a couple hours to dry each color. It's super durable but very hard to remove. You can also use the paint I use, house paint. I have over 100 tutorials on my channel demonstrating it's use. After you paint it with the house paint, put a couple coats of clear over it. It should be pretty durable after that but not scratch proof if someone tries to graffiti in it. It's not terribly hard to remove but with the coatings it will take a little work. I hope that helps.
You should avoid cleaning in a traditional way. The water along with pressure from squeegee will scrape off the black usually first then sometimes the color too. It's best to wipe around the design if possible. However if you clear the window it can withstand anything and does not fade for years.
Hi Scott Ive been painting signs for many years I love your work! I want to get some paint to do some window splashes Do you think the water base fluorescents by WPS is good? and durable? Or should I get Day-Glo oil base? Also, can Cartoon Cell paint be used to outline oil base paints??Thanks!!
Retrosigns1 Window splash paints is good paint and durable but if you want to do medium to large window splashes buy Dayglo waterbase fluorescents in gallons. It's quite an investment at about $130, a gallon with shipping , (last time I checked) you might get by with one or two gallons, Rocket Red and Saturn Yellow is great! If you want to just try out some fluorescents you can buy WPS. I would avoid oil base dayglo though, good paint but so hard to remove. You can outline and paint with cartoon colour cel vinyl on waterbase and oil base too I imagine. You can also use One-Shot black for outlining if you want an oil base outline and lettering paint but again harder to remove. You can also use Ronan aquacote black too, it's waterbase.
I’m new to window painting but no painting itself , I have my first gig for a barbershop this week and I am wondering what type of paint do you use ? For all weather ? And what supplies do you recommend Do you think I can get the paints at Walmart ?
Hey Scot! You are incredible! I watched your videos and took my first shot at 3 large boutique windows today. I used indoor/outdoor Valspar paint+primer for my white base and for my main colors i used indoor Valspar paint+primer. This morning it was around 78-80 degrees and windy. When i applied my color to the white base the white base coat started to splinter and Web up in a few spots. Other spots seem a bit crackled. I applied the base with a little 2" foam roller and the top color with a 1" foam brush. What do you think could be the problem?
+Whitney Allen It could be the paint you are using. I am sorry that happened. I have had that before but it was with tempera not house paint. I wish I could help more. Maybe try the paint on a window at your own and see if it does the same thing, if so, then it's probably the paint. But it could also be the window you are putting it on. Sometimes windows will repel the paint but it's not that common. if paint beads up on me I sometimes wait until it is almost dry and rub it with my hand and smear it dry, then I do a couple coats over that.
Hi, i cant seem to find any black cell vinal paint. I did get Toon tone from Amazon, but they only sell 4oz bottles. It was amazing to work with today. I can never go back to regular black paint. Where can I go to get what you use.
So I paint my office's windows using acrylic paints... is the interior paint just preference?? Or if I were to use a base coat and then the rest would it crack and flake?? I want to know if I should change my painting approach... any advice much appreciated..
Get interior eggshell house paint, I have videos where I talk about why. You might get my first e book for a beginning approach that explains all to get started and why I do what I do. You can buy small containers from Home Depot of your primary bright colors, also you can get mistints everywhere for as low as $2. a quart and $5. a gallon. I can't say if regular artists acrylics will crack or not. They might be okay. But they are spendy.
You can but I don't recommend it. I have seen people have problems with it lifting and coming off too. You can get small sample jars of house paint for about $3.
hey scot great work watching all your videos now. question I'm going out to az from la tomorrow I'm an artist but never worked on a window before. my cousin has a clinic and wants me to do something on the windows , I'm not charging her much for this. so is there another black paint that i can use
+Tommy Chavez In Arizona you might find a small bottle of cell vinyl for not too much or you can also use Ronan Aquacoat. Signpainter supply places usually carry that. You can also use one-shot but that is oil base and harder to clean up.
Love these videos!!!! I'm looking to paint windows for my preschool, but I would like it to last for years if possible.Leaf and greenhouse design. What is the best paint to use for this? Exterior or Interior paint? Any sealer over it? Thanks so much!
Extreior is tougher, harder to remove if you don't mind. I have videos on clearing just do a search "clearing" Any acrylic clear will do. Home depot Rustoleum is good.
Great confidence and skill I want to.do some art in.our windows fir xmas but want to.keep it cheap can I not simply use egg shell for all ?.inc black ? Thanks
@@ScotCampbellwindowpainter thanks for this info I'll certainly look into this I must ask what is the reason for the black needing to be different? Thanks see acrylics you cant get the definition etc and it dont sit all that well on the window so need something better
@@ScotCampbellwindowpainter I found rust oleum which also is good for glass or says but dont see ted I'll look in my local diy store soon to see what I can see I have of course found the colour paint you described not looked for the black yet
@@kevinhancock4064 The black needs to be fluid for outlining and lettering. If you thin house paint or many acrylics it will flow but you lose opacity. You can use createx opaque black or ronan aquacoat black or decoArt patio paint wrought iron black. Presently I use Golden High Flow Acrylic Carbon Black
Hi! This might be a reach and really random but I was wondering if you did like job shadowing opportunities or like classes 1 on 1 or anything like that, and curious on how you got started on a job like this im really curious and also live in the Hillsboro area
I am retired mostly from commercial work. I live in Northern Nevada now. I have over a 1000 videos. Watch them to learn and practice a lot. You might also consider becoming a patreon member i have over 400 videos there too plus free e books and original art.
There are various options but I have settled on Gloden high flow acrylic carbon black. You can also use DecoArt patio paint wrought iron black. Ronan Aquacoate black or Createx opaque black.
I first do the case coat white, then draw the design in the wet paint with my finger. I let it dry then do a second coat. After that dries i can see where I drew the lines in the first coat. You should get my intro e book. It shows tools, materials and step by step. Watch the channel trailer for more info. Or you might join my patreon for more.
I use Interior House Paint with an eggshell finish. It's easier to remove. You can put a couple coats of polycrylic over it to make it last a long time, years actually. For totally permanent use One Shot Lettering Enamel. Watch the trailer on this channel and get my basic e book. It will save you time if you are just starting. If serious about making a living as a window painter join my patreon. Ebooks are free as a top tier patron.. Thanks for watching!
I have very little experience painting on the inside. but many people do, it looks good except from a distance it isn't as eye-catching due to the light having to pass through and bounce back through out of the glass to your eye. Also glare sometimes. But yeah people do it. I've painted in 6 degrees (F) not real fun but one can paint in cold temps.
Hello again Yuliya, here's is a link to a Canadian artist I follow on instagram that paints windows on the inside and does wonderful work. I would contact here. thegraphicgarden.com/graphic-design-portfolio/window-painting/
I don't paint car windows but I would use the same brushes that I use on regular storefront windows. Do a search on my channel, "brushes I use" good luck!
Ive been watching your videos for a couple weeks. They are very Informative and motivating! I was wondering what kund of paint, gallon paint you use!! when you do script lettering what kind of knife do you use? Thank you so much im just beginning in this business!
I use interior house paint with an eggshell finish. At present I use Sherman Williams. I am making a short ebook for beginners. I will let you know when it's available. The knife is "allway".
Hey I live near you! Was going to paint my home windows and I don't want to deal with scraping. What are your thoughts on Tempura paint in the Pacific Northwest?
Scott I just got some water base Dayglo and Im just about ready to go Im having trouble finding the right base white I went to lowes and they sell Valspar It is a primer/paint combo should I just get any brand of interior egg shell white that is an acrylic latex ? I live in Pennsylvania near Harrisburg Thanks Im thinking of buying oil base Dayglo or Ronan after the water base is gone.....
Retrosigns1 Yes any "good" brand of white interior with an eggshell finish is fine. You might just buy a quart though to test it out. Some brands are very thin and not opaque stay away from those. Sherman Williams or Benjamin Moore might be a good brand to try but I would imagine there are many popular brands that will suffice. I have a question, why are you considering going to oil base? I heard Nick Barber uses oil base again. Are you thinking about it for durability? I would imagine one could use the eggshell interior water base also if you are painting oil base over it, maybe it would wash off easier. I don't know but I have had to use Jasco paint remover to get off windows that were painted with oil base fluorescents. It was toxic and really difficult to remove.
I was always used to using oil base for my normal sign work and some local window painters said to use it for durability on windows, plus I could use my flats and quills that I am used to using. Im sure I could use water base and put some kind of clear on it to protect it I need to get used to using a roller and a foam brush lol Im hoping to do my first window this or next weekend i can email you pics if you give me your email address I was also thinking of trying cartoon color for my white final outline (Nick Barbrer) style haha I read his book years ago and love the white outline around the whole sign
My email is scotcampbellwindowpainter@yahoo.com. At some point I would like to introduce dayglo into a few windows. Let me tell you though, even the oil base dayglo from what I have seen tends to fade over months. I believe the water base with a couple coats and a clear might outlast the oil base. But what do I know, ha! I've heard Nick Barber uses the oil base again, but I can't see taking off his large scale windows, would be curious how they do it. Like I said before, it was so difficult when I had to remove it. Yeah I suggest a clear, something with a good UV shield to prevent from fading, that stuff is notorious for that.
Superb work! I have been an artist all my life. But I have never tried doing this before. I'm 59 years old, and would like to do this to make some extra money for the holidays. Am I too old?
Scot Campbell Thank you very much Scot! I guess sometimes I feel older then I am. My father use to always say; "Your as young as you feel." And that was, and is, true. You're living proof! Again, thank you for your honesty. And I'll get back to you on how I did.
All my paint for the colors are the same. It is confusing as hell. You just have to remember to get Interior Eggshell House Paint really. I use Behr Premium Plus Enamel with an Eggshell finish. Sherwin Williams has Promar 400 Interior Eggshell. It's crazy! The definitions of the words have changed paintsprayerguide.com/enamel-vs-latex-paint/
Lately I have been been using Valspar Simplicity Interior with an eggshell finish. You can also use Behr Premium Plus Interior eggshell or Sherwin Williams Promar 200 Interior Eggshell. Stay away from Wallmart and Ace Hardware brands like "Royal" Don't use paint with a flat or semi-gloss sheen. Satin and velvet are okay to but just go with eggshell finish. I have videos where I talk about why and also in my intro e book.
Usually not. Especially if the rain can't reach it like here with an overhang. If it has time to really dry it's somewhat water resistant. But if doesn't dry and starts getting some moisture it can drip. Sometimes I clear them which is easy, and then it will last for decades. Seach my vidoes "clearing" thanks for watching!
how did you draw black lines on wet white paint? is it that black "cartoon color" animation paint that allows you to draw on wet paint? if so, what brush did you use to draw the black on wet paint with?
+tom slick I use my finger to draw in the paint. Here is a video where I slow down to show what I am doing and the process. th-cam.com/video/eTUnjvXjB9Y/w-d-xo.html I don't paint on wet paint usually, unless am blending. Here's a couple videos on the brushes I use... th-cam.com/video/T0E0b1Qvm6s/w-d-xo.html and these videos for the outlining and detail brushes... th-cam.com/video/T0E0b1Qvm6s/w-d-xo.html and... th-cam.com/video/IOttd_mtako/w-d-xo.html I hope that help, and thanks so much for watching!
+MsAadyn I have experienced that before myself. What happens is the paint doe not have time to dry completely, then when it rains the moisture in the air prevents part of the paint from drying, while other parts are dry, it cause a shrinking of the paint. Also I have noticed on some businesses it just happens, (very rare) and has nothing to do with the weather. I use to paint an Auto Body Shop like that. It would always crinkle on a few of the pains. I think it had something to do with the moisture inside, or maybe the glass itself. I would suggest blow drying a section completely, before adding extra coats or a clear, then watch and see what happens. For me this happens hardly ever but when it does it is frustrating. It might be your paint too. I would experiment, it's the best way to see what works and doesn't. Good luck!
Scot Campbell thanks for the quick reply any tips for me on learning reverse painting, since the whole quarantine thing a nursing home has contacted me about painting windows for the residents to see( from the inside looking out) but they don’t want me to enter the building they want me to paint the outside So I understand I should do a reverse painting, pretty excited for them to see something beside the 4 walls they are stuck in, I’m thinking like a beach scene flowers butterflies something cheery and happy You say to use interior paint and you don’t have to seal it! Eggshell I’m pretty sure I can do this but any tips will help

Pretty cool watching a professional in action!
Thanks!
This is the first video I found of your while desperately searching for info online. Been hooked ever since! Just wanna say thank you! Awesome!
Hi John, hmmm I thought I replied to this already
It was great speaking with you Scot! Thanks for the great vids! Please keep making the How-To's for us newbies. Your information is invaluable. Looking forward to continuing to learn from your vids! Have a great year!
Your welcome! You too!
SCOT CAMBELL ...smart guy. I love these videos !!!! THANK YOU SCOT !!!!!
+Errol Monchka Thanks Errol, I am here to help with anything and everything window painting! Thanks for watching!
I got recommended this 10 years later. Nice
I've done wall art and canvas but never a window. It's a horse of a different color for sure. I will definitely try it again! A big huge pat on the back for you...without your videos I would have been up a creek without a paddle...i didn't even know where to begin! Thanks again for your videos!
+Whitney Allen You're so welcome! Good luck.
NOTE: I don't use Behr anymore they created a "new and improved" formula, I guess to resist dirt or something, anyway it resists my cartoon colour black, so I use Miler now again primarily.
I love your art! Very talented.
Thank you soooo much Jeannine! I really appreciate the feedback.
Sounds like you are making healthy moves brother. Youbhave so many videos up you can teach for centuries! Thank you for all the knowledge. Take care.
Thanks, yeah, and more videos coming! ha!
wow thats fantastic
I would like to learn more about the kind paint that we should use
I meant where I can get that paint, what stores?
Thanks Eloy! I use Sherman Williams promar 200 interior eggshell for the main colors. I still use the metro recycled for the white. Only in Northwest U.S. Portland Oregon. Black I am still trying different ones because cell vinyl has been discontinued. Search in my videos about Patio paint for black for now
Stunning!!!! So easy to clean the windows!!!!!!
At the start of the video when you were saying you use interior house paint I was thinking ‘How will he get that off the window afterwards!!!!’
Yep, comes off easy!
i just love your work, im watching all your videos because i love your cartoon style !!
Big up from Spain!!!!!
AWESOME! tHANKS FOR WATCHING!
Oh my goodness first video that popped up for my search was yours, so glad it was yours! I’m officially hooked! I could watch you do this all day :)
Excellent tutorial! Your work is so inspiring. Thank you for sharing your wonderful videos!
my apoligies im sure you do its a you tube screw up im sure!!! i just couldn't find anything by just typing materials needed for window painting, very frustrating day i must say but Shes happy my mother that is we finally figured it out after 2 hours going to store to store sorry i took out any frustration on you friend!!!and youre awesome artist do enjoy your vids sir your attitude is fantastic!!!!
Thanks, I am glad you liked the video, leave comments on my others as well, I would appreciate that, yeah I have over 800, ha! enjoy!
thank you for sharing this, someday i will paint a window.... you make it look so fun!!!
I am glad Paul. I will make more window painting videos off and on. Did you subscribe already?
I just went back over it with a second coat of paint today. Maybe I didn't give it time enough to dry all the way? The boutique owner loved the window! She knew it was my first time ;) I sprayed the windows with Alcohol and wiped them clean before i started...maybe next time I'll clean them a second time and let the coats of paint dry longer. I wish I could send you a picture!
+Whitney Allen I saw it on FB, so incredible for first time! fantastic job! very decorative, very fun and whimsical, nice design!
Been loving your signs for years. I just recently found out about this channel. So great you made these videos. Thanks!
Awesome glad to have you aboard!
In my country we have to do window painting on the inside of the window because of outdoor weather removing paint :)
So here we have to paint backwards, outline first, then highlights or shadows, then background colors,
yes sometimes you have to do that!
Scott you're awesome - I really enjoy your art work - I love your cartoons especially!
Thanks KC! I enjoy doing the cartoons most!
Note: I stopped using Home Depot Berh paint because thewy added something to it that repells the black I use, I use Miller paint now again.
Fun to watch you paint Scot. I've learned so much from you. Thanks! :)
thank you. love you work
You're welcome!
Recently painted the windows of the little donut shop I work at on campus and our boss that runs a full sized store now wants to pay me to paint her place 😅 thank goodness for this video!
That's cool, glad you liked the video.
I am back with Behr now as my outlining black is compatible now
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge n talent!!!! Soooo cool!
My pleasure!!
by the way love your art and passion in your art form love it!!!!
Thanks...and thanks for taking the time to comment.
He is the Obi-Wan, enjoy this stuff & learn from the master young kalyally.
hahahaha!
This is so helpful! thanks for sharing your process!
You are so welcome!
the Musik in your vidios is awesome !! very well timed...the movie cutting plus Musik is professional...of corse the painting to...Thanks
I absolutely love this channel!
Wow! Thanks!
I don't add soap. I've been hearing that off and on for the past 42 years.
Also, I'm going to be painting the show floor of a car dealership and my question is....how do I paint so that its enjoyed both inside and outside guests? Double sided? Should I just paint one side of the glass?
You would have to paint it twice to make it look the best.
Hey scot is there any other good black to practice with? And what kind of clear coating should we use? Thanks
@@ScotCampbellwindowpainter Awesome Scot thank you for everything! You are a true wizard
Do you put anything on the window before / after you paint to prime /seal it?
Nothing prior but sometimes I will do a polyurethane clear over the finished paint. Search "clearing" here on my channel.
To remove the paint I wash them with warm soap and water, keep them wet. Then after 5 minutes scrape with 4" razor. Search "washing" in my videos. Good luck! Scot thank you for sharing your fabulous window art. Where can I get black cartoon cel paint , Now that cartoon colour stopped making it. Or what is a good substitute?
After a year I finally found a good black. GOLDEN HIGH FLOW ACRYLIC CARBON BLACK
Your art is incredible!!
Thank you SOOOO MUCH Kitty!
I love your work. Im thinking of taking up window painting too. My style isnt exactly like yours but your videos are inspiring and informative and i love your personality
loveabbygrace Glad you like the work. Best of success on starting a window painting career. The secret is perseverance and doing you own style.
Great video. What do you use now for black for lettering and outline? Also my paint seems to be thick and tacky How do you get it so smooth and even?
BEHR PREMIUM PLUS 1 gal. #PPU18-06 Ultra Pure White Eggshell Enamel Low Odor Interior Paint & Primer 205001 - The Home Depot

This may be a silly question, but just wondering about using the razor on windows - do you need to be very careful that you don't scratch the window?
Not a dumb question. No not really it's hard to scratch the window. if you hold the razor right. I have washed over a thousand windows and never scratched one. If you took the corner of te bad you might br able to dragged it along the window with a lot of pressure and scratch it with a dull blade.
@@ScotCampbellwindowpainter Thank you! So far I'm just thinking about trying window painting, but it looks interesting and fun to do!
It's a wonderful art form. Painting on glass Roxanna is so forgiving and easy to make course corrections. Whether for fun or profit it can be very rewarding creatively. Let me know if you give it a go.
Hey Scot, love the videos. Do u charge to clean the windows also?
Usually it was included in the price, some people paid to have other people wash them, sometimes I would charge extra for the windows separate.
I'll have to try the cel vinyl black. Looks like you can't get it locally and have to order it online.
+Wandering Fox I'm not sure what you mean by "cut away reveal" can you explain more?
+Wandering Fox After the holidays I plan on experimenting painting on the inside as I have had a few people interested in that.
Yes, I am going to use a razor blade to make dash marks in the black base paint like this: - - - - - - -. to reveal what is inside the building. Mainly wondering what type of paint to use if I'm doing solid black
Wandering Fox You can use any quality brand eggshell or satin finish black interior or exterior.... Sherman Williams, etc.
It's a great investment. www.patreon.com/scotcampbell
...so awesome!
Thank you Simeon!!!
It's all in my videos, I have thousands of hours of instruction. I also sell an ebook for beginners.
love your work..Im a tattoo artist and was ask to do my first windom mural at my local bait shop..
Good luck! This may be just the beginning of a cool new career for you to add to your existing tattoo work.
Scot Campbell thanks you...for starters can i use a black for outlining with a behr premium plus self priming eggshell enamel?
Rudy Rodriguez and what kind of paint did you use for the white base? can i use any brand?
Ronan black acrylic is good for outlining also. Any good opaque fluid black will suffice to start.
You're addictive! Lol !
It would be so great if I could ever find any part 2s or 3s. Wish you had a search engine!
I have about 1000 videos now. Thanks for watching! I appreciate it!
The audio is cool I felt like you were teaching me personally.
wonderful! Thanks so much for watching.
Tyrone Gurule how to playlist up
In my country we have to do window painting on the inside of the window because of outdoor weather removing paint :)
In Portland the weather was intense too
Hi Scot, great work. Question: can windows with splashes be cleaned? Or will the squeegee scrape off the paint? Thanks
You should avoid cleaning in a traditional way. The water along with pressure from squeegee will scrape off the black usually first then sometimes the color too. It's best to wipe around the design if possible. However if you clear the window it can withstand anything and does not fade for years.
@@ScotCampbellwindowpainter awesome, thanks so much. Thanks for replying. Great day to you
Hi Scott
Ive been painting signs for many years
I love your work!
I want to get some paint to do some window splashes
Do you think the water base fluorescents by WPS is good? and durable?
And what supplies do you recommend
Do you think I can get the paints at Walmart ?
Search on my channel what paints I use...etc. I have 950 videos. You can gets small containers at Home Depot. Small sample pots for about $4.
+Whitney Allen Let me know what you decide to do and how it turns out.
Hi, i cant seem to find any black cell vinal paint. I did get Toon tone from Amazon, but they only sell 4oz bottles. It was amazing to work with today. I can never go back to regular black paint. Where can I go to get what you use.
Dick Blick sells Golden High Flow Acrylic Carbon Black. In a pinch try also DecoArt Patio Paint Wrought iron Black, or even try mixing them too.
So just regular interior house paint works ? It doesn’t damage the windows or stain them
No damage at all or staining. Subscribe to my channel, you'll see...good luck!
Can you use regular acrylic craft paint?
Thanks again appreciate it . I'll share the work.
So it’s interior paint? I’m just starting but I want to make sure I get the right kind of paint.
Interior with an eggshell finish. Behr Premium Plus is good or other quality brands, stay away from Glidden regular, Ace hardware paint and Wallmart.
Thank super helpful for a beginner
Glad it was helpful!
Great confidence and skill I want to.do some art in.our windows fir xmas but want to.keep it cheap can I not simply use egg shell for all ?.inc black ? Thanks
Get quarts at Home Depot Behr premium. The black needs to be different, cheap black alternative DecoArt Patio Paint Wrought Iron Black
@@ScotCampbellwindowpainter thanks for your info mate much appreciated
Nice work !! How much do u charge for that size window on a business ?
$150.
Hi! This might be a reach and really random but I was wondering if you did like job shadowing opportunities or like classes 1 on 1 or anything like that, and curious on how you got started on a job like this im really curious and also live in the Hillsboro area

Cartoon color Co is no longer in biz. What do you recommend for black now? Please and thanks
There are various options but I have settled on Gloden high flow acrylic carbon black. You can also use DecoArt patio paint wrought iron black. Ronan Aquacoate black or Createx opaque black.
Hi Scot..when you draw then paint over your drawing how do you know where to paint on it? Thx in advance❤
@@ScotCampbellwindowpainter thanks! 👍👍
What's the best paint to last as long as possible for more a semi permanent painting?
I use Interior House Paint with an eggshell finish. It's easier to remove. You can put a couple coats of polycrylic over it to make it last a long time, years actually. For totally permanent use One Shot Lettering Enamel. Watch the trailer on this channel and get my basic e book. It will save you time if you are just starting. Hi Scot. Your work is amazing! question - I located in Canada and its cold). Do you have experience to paint from inside? does it look ok? Thanks
I would contact here. thegraphicgarden.com/graphic-design-portfolio/window-painting/
nice work man.. love it ! thanks for the tips
Thanks for commenting Wes! I appreciate that.
Use flirt Alert for the red now from Home depot Eggshell interior behr premium Plus. Black use Golden High Flow Acrylic Carbon Black
Scot Campbell wow that’s exactly what I got before even seeing this comment! Painting my first windows today, wish me luck!
Hi what kind of paint would you use on car window advertising? And brushes? Thank you kindly!
I don't paint car windows but I would use the same brushes that I use on regular storefront windows. Do a search on my channel, "brushes I use" good luck!
Hi Scott, job offer to paint windshields, and I have no idea how to price the job. Per windshield maybe? But how much? Any feedback?
I don't. Search on youtube people that paint windshields they could help I'm sure, good luck!
Totally fine as long as they are protected from getting wet. I used tempera for years before going to house paint.
Scott
I just got some water base Dayglo and Im just about ready to go
Im having trouble finding the right base white
I went to lowes and they sell Valspar
It is a primer/paint combo
should I just get any brand of interior egg shell white that is an acrylic latex ?
I live in Pennsylvania near Harrisburg
Thanks
Im thinking of buying oil base Dayglo or Ronan after the water base is gone.....
Im sure I could use water base and put some kind of clear on it to protect it
I need to get used to using a roller and a foam brush lol
Im hoping to do my first window this or next weekend
i can email you pics if you give me your email address
I was also thinking of trying cartoon color for my white final outline (Nick Barbrer) style haha
I read his book years ago and love the white outline around the whole sign

If its painted on the outside of window, surely it's easy to get scratched or damaged?
If someone scratches or damages it, yes.
Superb work! I have been an artist all my life. But I have never tried doing this before. I'm 59 years old, and would like to do this to make some extra money for the holidays. Am I too old?
funny.... I am 59 too, I plan on doing this for another 20 years. It keeps me young and healthy.
Scot Campbell Thank you very much Scot! I guess sometimes I feel older then I am. My father use to always say; "Your as young as you feel." And that was, and is, true. You're living proof! Again, thank you for your honesty. And I'll get back to you on how I did.
Ace Robst cool
am I painting enamel paint on top of latex paint.
All my paint for the colors are the same. It is confusing as hell. You just have to remember to get Interior Eggshell House Paint really. I use Behr Premium Plus Enamel with an Eggshell finish. Sherwin Williams has Promar 400 Interior Eggshell. It's crazy! The definitions of the words have changed paintsprayerguide.com/enamel-vs-latex-paint/
what kind of paint is best for painting on windows . and are easy to clean from Windows???
Jamshed Khudoyarov house Paint. yes it comes off easy...click on the link and watch my tutorials.
You use Just regular house paint?
Lately I have been been using Valspar Simplicity Interior with an eggshell finish. You can also use Behr Premium Plus Interior eggshell or Sherwin Williams Promar 200 Interior Eggshell. Stay away from Wallmart and Ace Hardware brands like "Royal" Don't use paint with a flat or semi-gloss sheen. Satin and velvet are okay to but just go with eggshell finish. I have videos where I talk about why and also in my intro e book.
Does this wash off in the rain?? Do you clear seal it or anything? I have a window I want to paint from outside but it’s exposed to weather.
Hey Scot, just wondering how on earth you don't lose your lines when you're laying in the colors?? Also do you use Miler for the white? Thanks!
this is a great video! Very informative!
Thanks John, check out many of my other window painting videos too! Thanks for watching, I appreciate the comment too.
Had windows painted at my small business with acrylic paints and when it rained it made it pucker and bubble> How can that be prevented?
Good luck!
+Scot Campbell Thank You
Thanks Gina! Yes someday you will....maybe sooner than you think?
Great job.Cool video!
Thanks! I have 900 more videos that came from this one.
The long handled 4” scrapers are a lot easier on your hands
I've tried both. Because i use both hands to scrape I've found the shorter handles easier to maneuver
Love your paintings I’m new to this
Can you tell me do you seal this
I usually don't. Sometimes when they want it permanent for years or there is exposure to severe weather. Search my videos "clearing"
