Major congrats on the new house! You've built something great here on TH-cam and I'm super proud to know you and to have watched you grow your channel from the early days when we were building your pedalboard in my garage! You're on your way to "Empire" status on TH-cam and are the high-water mark for us all in the music gear community! Much continued success in your new space! Here's to one-million subs 🍾 🥂
Congratulations on your new home and studio. One thing that hasn’t been mentioned is that it is something special to have a wife that is not only your soulmate but someone who is supportive every step of the way. My wife and I have been married for 45 years and has been with me ever step of the way wether dealing with business deals, health issues, death in both our families and whatever else there will be to face. I’ve been playing guitar for about 20 years and have really enjoyed and learned a lot from your videos. Keep up the great work!
@greg schoenherr you and I are lucky. I’m also married to my best friend and soulmate, and she’s been behind me and my music 100% since day one. And I support her photography and all of her endeavors all the way as well. I realize that guys sometimes make mistakes and marry a woman they thought they knew, but I’ll never understand those guys who marry for any reason other than real compatibility. Money, power, social status, marrying the boss’ daughter, a trophy wife or because they “think it’s time they settled down” - those are the wrong reasons that end up in misery. Anyway, just had to comment. All the best.

I started my TH-cam journey less than a year ago, and I can totally relate with what you felt and said to yourself for such long time, that was me for a buttload of years. "I am not enough" "I donn't know enough" and yet, I decided to do it, and honestly, man, you have been such a great inpiration for what I've done so far and what and how I want to do it. Your channel and your content has inspired me to do my own stuff, hoping to be onne day like you and achieve the things i dream and aspire to, and how that feelinng renews every week I see your videos. Puisheen, Steven Ward, and you, Rhett Shull, have been such inspiring figures to follow, and I am very grateful that you guys decided to do the things you do, because they've served as inspiration, every single day, to wake up and do what I'm trying to do now. So, thank you, Rhett, and congratulations on everything you've achieved so far, and what's to come. You deserve it all, and more.
This is a great vid, different than what I was expecting. I have to drop a comment because you brought up Bob Vila and This Old House a couple times. I went to Berklee. I rented and eventually bought what had originally been Bob Vila's very first building he'd built to house the production of This Old House - and converted it into a music studio. Not a recording studio, but a space in which I taught guitar for years, practiced, had rehearsal, etc. Downstairs was a 32' x 28' open bay with one (big) garage door, more outlets than you could possibly want, with a 10' ceiling. This is where they built cabinets, etc. It was raw drywall, concrete and filled with sawdust floor when I first moved in. Took 3 days just to get the sawdust out. I painted it a great cool creative color (s), built a wall & door where the bay door was, put carpet on the wall to kill sound, etc. I can relate to all the work you've put in. So in it's weird but very appropriate way vis a vis this vid of yours →Bob Vila's original This Old House became an actual music studio. I left there a long time ago, but starting the process again - which is why I watched the vid. And somehow it all comes full circle. Congrats on the basement studio! (I've watched some of that)
Rhett is absolutely living his best life and it makes me so happy to see it! Congrats on the recent success and best of luck on all the future endeavors!
It is very touching witnessing our Dream unfold together with your Father You are so blessed to have him give a hand, that is solid support, Having that is more than having the best gear in the world!! I remember how I started putting junk gear while squatting on a vacant house & another in a tiny tool shed where you have bow down to get in...More Passion for building creative space Rhett!
Kinda funny, I was always jealous of how cool your studio is and never realised that it was a storage room. Really goes to show that you can always make it work for you if you really want! Really happy for you! Keep making those dreams come true!
Been following the channel for about 3 months. Enjoy the content very much. I live in Portland, Indiana, about 45 miles south of Sweetwater Sound. I am a big fan and customer of Sweetwater. I put together my own home studio about 8 years ago with the help of the good folks @ Sweetwater.
I remember finding you when you guys first moved into the basement and talked about buying a house and I'm so proud to see you guys achieve your dream!
I am so pleased to see this come to life. Rick brought you to me, and, I consider that a gift. Praise for Sweetwater because they have been as gracious as a company could be. My "sales engineer," Alberto, is such a fine gentleman, and he does not engage in pressure sales. He has been a genuine advisor. The service I have received from him and the company is extraordinary, consistently for years. Now I see they have chosen a fine musician and communicator to sponsor. CONGRATULATIONS.
Congrats on the new studio! The old one had a slightly depressing, dark atmosphere. The new one looks much more open and friendlier. I hope you're gonna have a lot of fun there. :)
One idea for your loft...Leslie rotating speaker cabinet. And experiment with wet/dry/wet, both wet amps in stereo. Maybe all three up there firing down at you. Maybe just the dry channel. Maybe one wet to get the left (or right) some serious room separation to help with wide imaging and huge sense of space. Killer room, enjoy experimenting!
Excellent video Rhett! I am so proud of you and Tilly. Can’t wait to see what the next chapter brings. No Plan B Dude! And the sign is still in the basement....just so you know.
Rhett, I discovered your channel just in the last week or so, and just wanted to say how much I appreciate it. You are obviously an excellent musician, but what I love is you come across as sort of a very relatable everyman. You have a wonderful way of communicating. Congratulations on your studio, I'd say you have earned it and deserve it.
Really couldn’t be happier for you. We just moved too, and we’re planning to turn half of our garage into a studio for me. It’s gotta be secondary to work and raising my kid, but I’m super excited to get my space going. Congrats, man. We’ll deserved.
>lives in parent's house for three years to save up for a down payment >also has like $50,000 worth of guitar gear I respect a man who has his priorities straight.
I often wonder why "living with parent´s" is considered such a "shame" (with more intensity in some societies, like USA). What if it is a big ass house/mansion? Many people in my country also live in the same building (sold the house and got several apartments). Many people will regret not seeing their folks enough when they get to adult age.
I can understand the excitement. My wife and I are buying a house in Loganville and I’m really thrilled I will have my own space for guitars and recording equipment. Can’t wait to pack it up and go.
Wow! So happy for you guys not only for the new space but for becoming home owners. It's a big step and I can see from your enthusiasm and humble attitude that you will make it into something "Amazing"!!! We have never met but my wife and I are from Atlanta (living in Wash. DC for the last 15 years). I am sure we know many people in common since I used to work in the film and television field there (1985-2005) and ran in music circles the rest of the time. I have been a devoted followed of this channel for a couple of years now and always find useful information and inspiration in your posts. Can't wait to see what is next for the channel and I am really looking forward to seeing the STUDIO build out. Would love to meet you face to face someday and swap ATL music stories. Good luck and keep pushing forward! Matthew Corrigan
I am so happy for you , Rhett !! Your new home looks like my dream home . As for helping you find a guy with the recording studio , there is a dude that goes by the name Rick Beato . I bet he could help you lol
Thanks for the breakdown and I'm all kinds of jealous / envious of your setup. While I have a well functioning, modest home studio my cat has destroyed two sets of headphones. He doesn't like anyone to sing and he'll slip in during the middle of a session and start chewing though the headphone cords without anyone knowing it until suddenly you can't hear yourself! I can repair the cords but they are never the same. An easy fix is to shut the door to keep him out but in my house the ventilation isn't so good so it gets really hot if I do that. So now I have set up all my gear to face the door so I can see him when tries to slip in. Even so, he found a way to voice bomb one of my sessions. I was tracking some layered harmonies and got everything down but on later playback I could hear a faint but very audible "meow" in the background! Evidently my cat wants to be part of the creative process and if he can't be, then he wants to shut it down. Never thought I would be trolled by my own cat.
Congrats man. That’s a great space full of possibilities. I’ve worked in a bunch of studios and I’d say a smaller live room and a couple of iso rooms is the way to go. I’ll look forward to seeing how it evolves. 😉
One thing that's really cool with you is that you basically started your studio journey at the "grass roots" level, working out of a basement. You learned so much from that experience, and have been able to translate that into your new space which is very much a "professional" environment. All the while educating yourself AND us too! Really nice work Rhett. Thanks for providing a clear, accessible view into your "world". Your video work is some of the most enjoyable stuff i view on TH-cam. Oh, and your basement recording studio project sounds REALLY exciting. It's a nice space and i think it'll work out well. I'll tell you, your basement looks like it was MADE for being a studio. (I vote for the iso room btw.)
Hi Rhett, that basement has the potential to be a superb live room / recording space. First you might want to set up the bar with some awesome optics...( that's what I know them as..you know, those upside-down Scotch Bottles where you push the glass up to get one measure), and a couple of beer taps too, maybe a real coffee maker also. I say this, because you will be down there a lot, ha ha. Also proper ventilation comes to mind as well. I can't wait to see how this large project progresses. I'm sure your friend Rick Beato will help with all the Studio Equipment needed...all your regular viewers will be stoked to see these videos in the coming months.
Congrats Rhett!! Getting your own space to work and create is one of those “made it” moments. I wish you all the best! Also we are bike twins. (Specialized enduro) If you ever find yourself in Canada hit me up and I’ll take you and Tilly out!
Zach should be proud of you on fan duty--that’s what made me feel “homeowner” when I put four of them up. Surprisingly it was almost idiot proof (which is good for people like me, lol). Space looks great, congrats to you guys again on the house, you two deserve all the happiness, success and good health the world has to offer. All my love bro.
Here's my tip on the acoustic panels you mounted to the walls. If you space them out from the walls up to the thickness of the panels, it will extend their effectiveness into lower frequencies. They won't absorb proper low frequencies as they're just not deep enough. But they'll work at lower frequencies than they currently do by spacing them out from the wall. If you space them further than the thickness of the panel, it becomes less effective again so there's a limit to how much gain you'll get from this. Good luck.
You should get a "top down bottom up" blackout cellular shade for that window. That way you can blackout the light or open it from lifting the shade up or letting it down from the top. You can really fine tune your amount of light. I installed shades for 10 years and those are the most versatile.
Congrats!! Hey, you have four additional line ins in the back of the 4-710d - could be great to keep those modelers permanently routed to those! Love the 4-710d, it’s the brain of my space too!
This is so fun. One rule for you to consider that I learned the hard way. My doctor actully advised me of this rule. NEVER EVER have drinks or liquids on the electronics desk, table, or anything. Have a beverage stand instead. I learned the hard way.
Congratulations! You'll really be able to deep dive on your creative video production now. I did something similar with a room in my house on my TH-cam channel. It's a lot of fun! Thanks for keeping us updated.
Looks great Rhett! The before/after clap test shows that the acoustic treatment actually works ... not just a decoration. I think I need more guitars ...
I’m so jealous of your “pedal rack“......... freaking awesome dude! Side note......I am getting closer to “my tone”. You know the tone I hear in my head but have never been able to make it come out of speakers. This is thanks to you in large part. So, thank you Rhett. The new space looks comfy and inspiring. Keep on keeping on 🤘🏼🤘🏼 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
"Mon, dad, me and my wife are gonna move in for three years while I'll be earning my own house by making youtube videos". Yeah, sounds convincing. Congrats on actually pulling it off!
Why regular people asume that living with someone else (your folks for example) is such a burden/shame/failure? That´s bs. You know how the Rockefeller´s or any other hyper wealthy family back each other?
I can't remember which video on the channel was my first one. But I have been watching for quite a while. It's been a pleasure to see you and Tilly both grow and flourish on youtube. Congratulations on the new home and studio spaces. Welcome Chris. I'm looking forward to all of the next steps and chapters. Cheers.
Just found this video and it was coincidentally published 3 days before my mum bought a house and we started moving in, and I'm just now getting my studio set up!
Personally, I would say bust out those walls then put a smaller iso booth on the other side of the room in the corner (on the same wall as the bar and closet). That way you can have the control room look straight into the live room.
Thank you for starting making TH-cam videos! You helped bring music back to me, I'm sure I'm not the only one. Awesome that you made this happen! Can't wait to see the studio come to life.
I'm sorry Rhett I just hear the echoey house acoustic in that vault space and then see the speakers on top the desk riser and omg a SUB under the desk and i think about standing waves at 40Hz or whatever the resonant /f/ will be in that room The first thing I would have done is forget about the desk, just set the speakers up with some very familiar music and listen to what it sounds like in the room and find the best place to sit in the room where the bass from that SUB sounds the best, than mark that spot "X" and its where your listening position is (so where the desk goes is oriented to that point). Or I'd just take the sub away and start with near fields only putting a sub in that space without listening to what it will sound like with the desk against a wall is a recipe for bass frequency disasters for anything you mix in that space. panels on walls only affect the mids and highs. low frequencies are room and position dependent turn the sub OFF for a month I am begging you please
8:24 Pink Floyd Echoes. Absolutely love the Meddle album! Anybody please help: Can't remember the name of the song right after that Edit: Nevermind, It's Green Is The Colour! But which version? It's not the album version Anyway, great Taste Rhett. Also that Room looks fantastic, altough I'll miss the old one. I was surprised at how well this acoustic treatment works! I'm really looking forward to the Recording Studio Series.
I'm green. I built 5 studios in my time... and a number of voice booths... Building a studio is a creative endeavour that matches making music. Congrats! Good job.
The coolest thing about the loft is that it lets in tons of natural light and the ceiling that vaults upward to it gets rid of two 90 degree angles. I don't think I'd want to climb up and down the ladder all the time, so I'd go with those who suggested room/air mikes and cameras aimed downward. Then I'd put something you find inspirational to look at, whether it be artisan glass, plants, wind sculpture or a couple of vintage instruments. Regarding the ceiling fan, I'd keep it as it will make the space more comfortable but I'd add a remote switch to the recording desk so you can switch it off before you press "record" and back on when you hit "stop."
Hell yeah! This honestly gave me hope. I live in a two bedroom duplex with my fiancé and plan on making videos here soon myself. I only hope one day to have basically exactly what you’re building
After nearly a year of trying to purchase a house with a similar space-and failing miserably in the history's toughest housing market-I look forward to living vicariously through this build. I know, first hand, how challenging this probably was, but having dedicated space to create is dream. Good luck.
Long time listener, first time caller. Just wanted to say congratulations. Your space upstairs looks fantastic as a starting point and I look forward to watching to miniseries of the studio build. Your video have been so informative, influential, and inspirational for me through some hard times. Cheers!!
Congrats for the house and your studio room! I am really happy for you! As for your basement project, big thumbs up... It will be huuuuge! Keep the bedroom as an iso room with windows on it. can!t wait to see how it turns out...
If you put the control room in the wood shop, you'll have to look thru the iso booth to see into the live room. If it were me I'd want the live room, iso room and control room all to be able to see each other directly. Nice job on the acoustic treatment upstairs, but definitely would go with a cloud absorber for the ceiling, it will make mixing and tracking in there a lot more fun!
adding some plants like you said on that top area and making them drag down a bit from the railing and down the ladder could look good, it all looks great so far, congrats
But seriously, amazing. And what a brilliant story of how you started and how you ended up here. I am sure I am not alone, but will definitely be interested in how your panels did in the corners regarding bass build up - and just over all ease in mixing. I am in a new place, too - and have a long way to go on the acoustic material decisions. Keep us posted.
Congratulations! It's such a cool awesome feeling to wake up and have it dawn on you, that you have created/realized a dream! Enjoy and savor those moments and apprecitate yourself for following this path!
I like the light aura! It makes you look like Edward from the twilight series.🤣 congratulations on your new place and thank you for being grateful to your parents.
Rhett, good afternoon from the sunny UK. I only got round to watching this video yesterday on way into London. I really enjoyed it, so thought I'd put an idea to you for your studio in the basement. The Live Room - I would go and have a look at Joe West's studio (which I love BTW) He has a very cool set up where he has this vast barn (I know you don't have a barn, but hear me out!) but in the corner he created a drum booth that has sliding glazed doors in front of it. That allows him to open up or shut the doors as much as he likes to control how much room he wants to capture from a drum kit and other instruments. It is a great way of controlling the ambience and room sound. My idea for you would be to see if you can make the live room as "lively" as you can, reflective surfaces etc. and then put a partition within the wall to allow how much of the live room you allow in or out for your recordings. I recorded in a studio in London not to long ago and they had a great live room with metal sheets on the ceiling to increase the reflections which worked really well, however, when it came to vocals etc we had to dampen it down which was fine, where as the doors like Joe's barn would have allowed more control. Just a thought! Cheers dude keep up the great work.
From someone who lives in the UK, I'm well jealous of the space you have in your homes over the pond. I would love a bigger room than I have for my studio. That being said, such a great job you did!!
Luxaflex is a reflector/diffuser. So hang some luxaflex in front of the windows and that way you can enhance the tunability of the room. Curtains in front of the loft will work too.
Dude...that boxy dark room with stacked equipment everywhere was awesome but I love seeing your growth and progression. Very glad this is working for you. 🖖
Congrats Rhett! I hope it isn't as cloudy as over here, because the sun coming in and out can really mess up the shot 😪
Haha, cheers bud
Same weather in France! With a bonus, the rain. 😉
Dunno why (I sucks at guitar and at filming technique) but it was the first thing I thought when I saw those windows 😁
Your twos studios look very similar...

I've heard of him, isn't Rhett his mentor or something? :)
If Peavey made a ceiling fan, I'd install it.
Eyyy maaan.
This wins the Internet for today.
You’re damn right.
The basement is full of love.
Go back there from time to time.
Congrats Rhett!! Getting your own space to work and create is one of those “made it” moments. I wish you all the best! Also we are bike twins. (Specialized enduro) If you ever find yourself in Canada hit me up and I’ll take you and Tilly out!
Awesome man! So stoked for you!
Thanks Brett!
Congrats! When I see that loft I think, "place for guitar cases and gig bags". They are the bane of my storage existence.
Set up several mics up in the loft for when you record, you'll get a lovely selection of room reverb on tap for free.
Was thinking the same thing, probably would be cool w drums
@@gr1m805 certainly!
This is me from the future I just saw a picture of your studio. Yes, this one right here in its completed form and it’s freaking awesome.
Suggestion for your loft:
Put on old motorcycle on display and put flowers around it. That would look really cool I think!
I got the motorcycle. No change just get it up there.
Best idea! Cut the bike in half...
Cannot wait for progress updates on ‘the Space’. Awesome job Bob V.!!
Excited for what’s upcoming.
Thanks Albus!
Good luck.
Rhett, I thought your big reveal at the end was that you and Tilley were building a nursery. I guess a studio is an "ok" project too 😆
You should get a "top down bottom up" blackout cellular shade for that window. That way you can blackout the light or open it from lifting the shade up or letting it down from the top. You can really fine tune your amount of light. I installed shades for 10 years and those are the most versatile.
Congrats Rhett! That room is perfect. And you get the basement? What's left for Tilly? haha
Congrats!! Hey, you have four additional line ins in the back of the 4-710d - could be great to keep those modelers permanently routed to those! Love the 4-710d, it’s the brain of my space too!
LOFT: Make a play pen out of it and stick the drummers up there.
Maybe a coloring table for the bass players.
Hey Rhett, congrats and kudos for including you're dad in the video! Nice job !!
Re: the iso room in the basement - seems like 2 small/medium iso rooms could be a great option.
You deserve it!!! One of the hardest working musicians I've seen in a while. Congrats!!!!!!!!
This is so fun. One rule for you to consider that I learned the hard way. My doctor actully advised me of this rule. NEVER EVER have drinks or liquids on the electronics desk, table, or anything. Have a beverage stand instead. I learned the hard way.
Nah probably ur just clumsy dude
So happy for you Rhett. Watched every second because of the happy vibes and your obvious excitement. You got this man, just keep doing it.
I went from, "yeah bro! Guitars, gear, studio! Yeah!" To, "puppyyyyyyyyyyyyy....." In about .003 seconds... 😂
Nothing is easy. It took you guys 1095 days. That is hard work and dedication. Congrats. Love that New Home Studio feeling...
"I'm good enough, I'm smart enough and, gosh darn it, people like me."
Congratulations! You'll really be able to deep dive on your creative video production now. I did something similar with a room in my house on my TH-cam channel. It's a lot of fun! Thanks for keeping us updated.
Rhet: “oh my god, lens flare... ok, let’s role with it.”
J.J.Abrams: “That’s my boy!”
Yeah, except it's not in every 3rd shot Rhett does!
Looks great Rhett! The before/after clap test shows that the acoustic treatment actually works ... not just a decoration. I think I need more guitars ...
I’m a simple man. I see a half-hour Rhett Shull video, I get excited.
I've been drooling over the UA 4-710 D for a few years now. Congrats on the new space/house!
My prediction: new studio is moved down into recording studio/basement, current studio transformed into “the baby’s room.”
I can tell you that does happen.
@@mikecorey8370 it happened to me too. 😁
It would be a short list of musicians that hasn't happened to :)
Yep! I was thinking the same thing! Haha
Actually set up my studio in the baby's room. After he left home upon college graduation...
Cheers.
My new cell phone was obliterated by FedEx around the same time. I wonder if they dropped your desk on my phone? 😂
Just found this video and it was coincidentally published 3 days before my mum bought a house and we started moving in, and I'm just now getting my studio set up!
As much as the isolated booth would be cool, I say big ass live room would be cooler
Personally, I would say bust out those walls then put a smaller iso booth on the other side of the room in the corner (on the same wall as the bar and closet). That way you can have the control room look straight into the live room.
@@MattyPanda I like it!
Thank you for starting making TH-cam videos! You helped bring music back to me, I'm sure I'm not the only one. Awesome that you made this happen! Can't wait to see the studio come to life.
I'm sorry Rhett I just hear the echoey house acoustic in that vault space and then see the speakers on top the desk riser and omg a SUB under the desk and i think about standing waves at 40Hz or whatever the resonant /f/ will be in that room
The first thing I would have done is forget about the desk, just set the speakers up with some very familiar music and listen to what it sounds like in the room and find the best place to sit in the room where the bass from that SUB sounds the best, than mark that spot "X" and its where your listening position is (so where the desk goes is oriented to that point).
Or I'd just take the sub away and start with near fields only
putting a sub in that space without listening to what it will sound like with the desk against a wall is a recipe for bass frequency disasters for anything you mix in that space.
panels on walls only affect the mids and highs. low frequencies are room and position dependent
turn the sub OFF for a month I am begging you please
1st lens flare a good mojo blessing ray of light from the positive higher vibes
8:24 Pink Floyd Echoes. Absolutely love the Meddle album!
Anybody please help: Can't remember the name of the song right after that
Edit: Nevermind, It's Green Is The Colour! But which version? It's not the album version
Anyway, great Taste Rhett. Also that Room looks fantastic, altough I'll miss the old one.
I was surprised at how well this acoustic treatment works!
I'm really looking forward to the Recording Studio Series.
I heard Planet Telex by Radiohead at one point
Green is the colour is from the more album right? I was unaware there were different versions
@@benjaminfowler4513 i'm quite sure its not the more version. The phrasing is really different
I'm green. I built 5 studios in my time... and a number of voice booths...
Building a studio is a creative endeavour that matches making music.
Congrats!
Good job.
Artistic choice reminds me of Bob Ross: "There are no mistakes, just happy little accidents" 🙃
"If you made it this far, thank you"
I'm still here fighting with a Bigsby
😂
I feel you, man. I ditched my Bigsby and put in a Frequensator tailpiece. Life is good now.
@@rkomada88 try the Duesenberg Bigsby stuff... unbelievably brilliant pieces
Hell yeah! This honestly gave me hope. I live in a two bedroom duplex with my fiancé and plan on making videos here soon myself. I only hope one day to have basically exactly what you’re building
Nice bikes! ; )
Idea for the loft. A Drummer. Good luck in your new home, hope it brings you years of happiness.
Sure was nice of Zach to teach you how to install a ceiling fan! Excited for you and looking forward to all that is yet to come!
That's the thing is that space was cool as hell. I live in Texas and I'm so jealous of people with basements
Drum iso room for the win in the recording space. Nice work on the project studio. That's a cool room and well thought out.
