A Trident console huh? I got chills just from the sheer connection to the past right there. Queen, Bowie, T.Rex Lou Reed, Rush and a ton of others recorded at Trident Studios in England and they quickly went on to develop recording consoles as well...obviously to feed their obsession. That deck is part of arguably some of the best rock history ever! Ziggy Stardust, the first 3 Queen albums...man! Sorry to geek out like that

Andrews channel really helped me find some order in the chaos of my studio. It’s a small bedroom that at this point is full of gear. Seeing how he and dozens of other people solved storage problems and over tidiness issues with affordable options really helped. Getting my room under control, not so much from an acoustic treatment standpoint but in a functionally workable type of thing was a game changer for me.

I grew up in console/tape machine studios and it’s nice to hear modern guys appreciate what that provides vs. the process of click and drag and staring at a screen. Down for dumping to hard drive as you’ll retain your high end on the multitude of mix passes. But tracking and mixing with a console is where it’s at. As Brett said, the tactile nature of it is everything and you’re not so micro focused on a parameter.😊

    • @bertfransman9864
      @bertfransman9864 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think there are other arguments to be made for digital. Tracking through a console anytime you can, but when you include client budget & timeframe, mixing in the analogue domain is just so hard to justify. Recalls are impossible or you need a console that has total recall (I don't have to explain how expensive & time consuming that is). I understand how having 64 channels of SSL EQ & compression for mixing was quite something in the past, but with the plugins & crazy good outboard that we have these days it makes a whole less sense.
Don't get me wrong, as someone who grew up mixing live on consoles like the Midas XL3, I feel I have to work harder to get a great sound even on the highest end digital desk. There something about analogue desks that's absolute magic. But lord do I love saving a show by the press of a button, running CAT6 instead of a 150 pounds of copper, patching in a matrix instead of a huge splitter on stage via coms...
Or in the studio sitting down in my chair and have my complete mix from months ago up in about 3 minutes. And I don't have to do 4 days of maintenance every month on a mammoth console that eats power like a small condo complex.
The absolute majority of engineers these days work hybrid, best of both worlds is the only way forward.

My contribution to your studio is my experience with Roc-n-Soc - they have options (including a square seat, which I have, and it's awesome) you can select with a checkbox to configure anything from a straight up throne to an office chair complete with casters, foot ring, and backs with piston height adjustment in several fabric types. Check your boxes, pay about a couple hundred bucks, and in a few weeks your built to order chair arrives - I've had mine for about 15 years and it's just now getting ready for a piston change (I've been saying that for like 5 years lol) and the fabric is nearly perfect on top with just some of the piping on the edge worn a bit.
I'm not an affiliate but I wish I was. It's the type of tool you literally buy once; I see a lot of their configurations in a LOT of the best studio videos, which also affirms not just the quality but the comfort since a lot of places won't care about the cost of something they're gonna buy a few of, once. But they're so much less cost than any other seating option and with the configurability you can fill all your needs and spend half what you were on "specialty" furniture that fits the "role".
Honestly I can't believe it's lasted this long and I use it for hours a day for everything from playing guitar to computer work and it's super comfy for all of it (why it gets constantly used). Can't say enough about the product...it's done right at a very fair price.

Andrew's studio tours are fantastic and watching the changes to his studio (and the newer studio after building the previous one when they moved) has been really cool to see. So many interesting things, it's like watching different home design shows on HGTV and wanting to steal all the different ideas for your own future house.
Not having a console myself, I think the big thing will be determining the maximum size you will need and the maximum budget first. Figure that out and get the best option (for you) in that price range. Once you get around 20k there are several options w/a lot of channels and all good quality. It gets crazy what some companies want to charge for something like a smaller 8 or 16 channel, but between paying for a name or going w/a smaller brand who doesn't have economies of scale behind them, just so many options out there.
A console is way more than I would ever need, but there is such a mystique built up about them. Hell, the KLF had tracks with (Live at the SSL) tagged on them, and it was literally them sitting at the console recording them live in the studio. But a modern SSL isn't exactly going to be the same sound as that late 80s SSL that could have easily been a 70s design. Lots of research to do and you are in a uniquely privileged position to be able to visit w/folks who have studios with them (or visit Sweetwater's studios) to see what you really like the sound and workflow of best.
I'm sorry the studio project went sideways the way it did and I've been looking forward to more videos about it, but one day we will see it all in the end. Best of luck Rhett!

    Howdy Rhett and Andrew,
Totally awesome use of wasted space. Don’t forget you also have 20’ x 20’ below that can be used for orchestral works or tributes to those who have gone to that other band.
BTW - Probably best to just bite the bullet and use pre-drilled wood as your coffee and other pourable liquids station top above your amp shelf. One-half to one full inch holes gets the job done right if in a hurry for your liquid amp screams.

Crazy, I literally just came across Andrew's channel from his recent tour of Mitch Gallagher's home studio and then you do this video so clearly I was meant to find his channel lol. He definitely has a great studio and I am a HUGE proponent of having a control surface. I went through a couple different ones before I finally settled on the UF8 when it came out and I will never go back to any other one. It is BY FAR the best control surface out there. Used in conjunction with my SSL Big Six, it definitely gives me the hybrid studio setup where I barely have to use the mouse at all and the fact that you can link multiple UF8s together is a plus.

Rhett, as a console owner (I bought a used Neve 5088 during the pandemic)- some things to consider... regardless of whether a console is new or old- if a channel goes down, look for a console that is serviceable per channel. I love the trident stuff but if you go that route- get the Trident 88- not the 68. The 68 is only serviceable in banks of 8. That means if one channel goes down, you have to take the other seven down to repair it. Not the case with the 88 series. Its an important purchase - so do it right. Other consoles I would recommend. The Neve 5088. You can start with 8 channels and expand, the Api 1608 and the Iron age audioworks console. Also- make sure you invest your money with a proven company thats going to be around for a long time. Hope that it helps.

after owning 2 big consoles i took the decision to work fully in the box with good mic pres/channelstrips as input and quality analog on my 2 bus mainly for recall ability. keep in mind that this makes sense for studios that have a lot of clients. if you do albumwork or work mainly for yourself a console is uber fun and i would go for it 10/10. studio looks dope af

My preferences and thoughts as to the Analog/Digital board thing:
Digital recalls/control would be preferable ( like on SSL consoles).
But you just can't beat a good quality analog preamp!
It is also hard to replace analog compressors and a lot of other outboard processing, so you need lots of high quality I/O for that.
But the recall and automation on faders and controls is best dine digital.
Being able to record the signal at any point in your processing stage is nice, it enables you to redo a take if you make errors on your processing side, while keeping the original performance untouched.
so my channel chain would be mic-Preamp-A/D, D/A-eq/comp/lim-A/D, D/A-effects-A/D, on a digital console and to a DAW recording.
It is a lot about your disiplin and headspace. Even if you have/use a DAW does not mean you need to babysit it!
Set up/configure your gear and hit record! play and have fun! hit stop when done. Bytes are cheap!
Then you can chop it up later, extract the good parts, and do all the DAW stuff.
Running out of tracks on your tape recorder will always be a problem. 8, 16 or 24 is never enough....

Hey Rhett, I met you at NAMM and we were talking about the the original owner of the Masco head, your studio build, and your hunt for a console. I remember you were thinking about the Trident. I’m also on a hunt for a console and the SSL Origin seems to be the one for me. The Genesys is great (worked on them for so long), and the API as well. But the extra components to make each fader control your daw just sounds like extra repair cost if it ever comes to it. I would love to talk to you more about it!

I've been waiting for this for so long! I've always said that you two were the same TH-camr (no offense). Andrew was Rhett for drummers and Rhett was Andrew for guitarists.

I am not saying I am a better player than Rhett or that Rhett ever sucked at playing guitar- I AM saying that I have noticed as I have enjoyed these videos over the last 2-4 years that Rhett's playing has progressed noticeably and I like that. Kudos.
