- Taken from my home in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario Canada this is the James R Barker from the Interlake Steamship Company, upbound arriving here at Rotary Park and Mission Point on her way to the locks here and then on to Two Harbors, MN and the CN Docks there to load iron ore pellets

A captain's salute is one long and two short. A master salute is three long and two short. A Barker salute is three extra long, and two long.
The Barker is the only one that has the two level sounds. I enjoy all the horns on the great lakes
Goosebumps....YES LOVE that High note transition into a low rattle.....Cant' explain....
It is apparently a musical 5th... it naturally goes together which is why we all find it so appealing... or so I've been told
@@DreDesignsGLMP most horns on cars, trains, and ships are tuned to a major 3rd. The perfect 5th gives an unusual sense of pure power, almost unnatural.

I've said it once and I'll say it a thousand more times. The James R. Barker has one of the best Maritime whistles I've ever heard. The Two horns together sound a D# Major Power Chord with a resultant harmonic Major third. Such a beautiful chord.

Sometimes his salute is soooo long, I think his horn is stuck. But it is the best double horn.

Andrea, I just saw your video and loved the salute from the James R. Barker. I've witnessed the Barker entering the Canal and harbor in Duluth and when those horns sing, they do send a chill down the spine and goose bumps to appear. Now I live in Ohio so no big boats and it's live cameras or videos. I could sit by the hour and watch those lake freighters clear the locks at the Soo. My wife thinks I'm missing a screw or two. God Bless.

Thank you so much... I just try to learn as much as I can every season, I absorb what people on the Lakes tell me, I research, and I just try to retain as much as I can! It will always be a learning curve for me which I love... the more I can learn the more I have to share with everyone :)

How do you know when certain ships are coming in and out? I want to see this ship in person someday and need to know when she's coming
How long does it take for a freighter to clear the locks?
Approximately an hour... 20 minutes to enter, another 20 to either be raised or lowered once they are in the chamber and another 20 minutes to exit
