This is awesome... I'm a masters thrower at 46, throwing 13m on brute strength with the 35 - These lessons should help me win nationals in the throws and ultra weight pent. if I can just practice and work on them - not having a coach, I have to really thank you for posting these videos as this one video alone has taught me things I never knew. PLEASE keep them coming!
Agreed Trevor. This is why I really like Coach Joe. He wants the athletes to feel comfortable with the technique first before they put a hammer in their hand. That's how I teach shot and discus and he takes the same approach in the hammer.
A lot of fundamental points that coaches (including myself) overlook. We sometimes get too in depth and forget what it feels like for the athletes when first trying to learn something like that transition onto the heel, or just the basic balance in the positions. I was so ingrained in the Larry Judge style (1, 1-1/2, 2, 3) of teaching turns that I didn't think there might be another way. Thanks for posting.
I dont know if this will help you at all, but when your coach talks about dragging, he is probably talking about you leading your throw with your left shoulder (if you are right handed) by push, he means to use your right side (hip foot knee and forearm) to push the hammer past the 0 degree position. This will help you transfer your weight from your right side to your left leg especially on the initial entry.
I have a couple questions. -Is there supposed to be more weight on one foot than another or is your weight supposed to be evenly distributed between both feet? -Is it more helpful to sit lower during your technique or does it not matter? -What is the easiest way to teach the "orbit" so that athletes do not use an up and down motion with their body to get the proper orbit? -What is a good drill to work on foot speed? thank you!!
I've always wanted Primal to make a hammer video! Hey Coach Joe, My coach tells me that when I'm throwing hammer or the weight that I am supposed to "push" the ball. I try to do this and he says that I am just dragging it. Do you know what he means by this and how am I supposed to do this? Thanks
I see the angle and degrees of the footwork, but I'm having no improvement on achieving it. I haven't been practicing enough? And I haven't been able to ind the next video - on spinning ... yet. (It's a shame to withhold it from everyone else, just because I can't get foot positions correct. lol)
I don't understand why you start at 270... Since you're starting there that would make that 0 and the normal position would be 90. Is the point of starting at 270 just for a drill? Or should we actually start our throws like that? I feel like when you throw it you'll be facing the original 180 degree spot as opposed to the original 0 degree spot. Basically, it just seems like an unnecessary starting possition
Ya na what.. I had a convo with a man who does hammer throwing..never seen it... Ive spent about ten minutes watchin several videos still not seen a hammer throw! Ppl learn by doing it seeing it after ive done 20 30 hammer throws i can start to look at tecniques and technicals... Id also like to do Javelin throwing but since im 38 and not at school or middle classed... Its forbidden! (LOL!)
Hi Coach(es)...now dont laugh ....I am a 70 year old masters athlete from South Africa and I do all the field throwing events and up to now I have done a very basic 1 spin throw ....I know I will increase distance with more spins and I find your technique couching very good. I am still very athletic and can hold my balance well.....now a quick question....has anyone ever thried a discus throw with the hammer throw technique....can or cant it be done...surely one will be able to spin a lot faster and speed is what it is all about....????? the discus technique has been the same since the 50's and needs an overhaul ...or not????

Hi there could you make a video on the pushing of the hammer
Made up you are adding some hammer technique to the list, thanks coach!

When I'm spinning and I'm on the side of my foot should I feel like I'm almost rolling my ankle?
I see the angle and degrees of the footwork, but I'm having no improvement on achieving it. I haven't been practicing enough?
