- In Lesson 6 of my Portuguese for Fun series, I explore several common formats for both asking and answering questions in Brazilian Portuguese. These range from simple, yes/no questions to asking about alternatives, using interrogative pronouns (question words), and asking what people do (fazer).

Professor Jason, I am taking a trip to Brazil, Rio de Janeiro in may to do Brazillian Jiu Jitsu. I am not quite sure what all I need to learn but I would like to understand as much as I can with the natives, especially considering I will be doing martial arts classes down there and professors will likely be giving direction in Portuguese. Will going through and becoming very familiar with all your videos be enough? What more can I do to further, and speed up my learning? I try to study every few days for at least an hour and often go over videos I already watched and try to quiz myself in ways. Your videos have been quite helpful.

if you mean "how long have you bla bla for?", you can say "há quanto tempo que você bla bla?" with the verb in the infinitiva form
It's probably just the way I am perceiving the examples, Jason. I only ask because I've heard (from other learning aids), the same inflection in the voice when asking a question in Brazilian Portuguese. To me it sounds like an exclamation at the end, not a question (1st three examples and others throughout). The "either/or" questions sound correct to me. I've just started learning, so maybe I'm "over thinking" all of this (lol) ........please have patience with me ;)

Exemplo: (pergunta) Você mora perto ou longe do centro?
(resposta) " 'Eu' moro perto." ou " 'Eu' moro longe."

E dizemos "espanhól" , o "o" aberto, e não"espanhôl, como os espanhóis falam... Espero que tenha ajudado... Um grande abraço

Why do some questions sound more like a statement rather than a question in that the voice doesn't rise at the end as in English? Am I missing something?

Hiii :) How you combine verb GOSTAR with other verbs?
+sta ima Gostar + de + verb (or whatever it is that the subject likes; "gostar de" can also be followed by a noun). For example, "Gosto de estudar português." ("I like to study Portuguese.") "Gostamos da comida brasileira." (We like Brazilian food.") Eles gostam do bolo que fez minha mãe." ("They like the cake that my mother made.")
