700 languages are completely different. We use Bahasa Indonesia to communicate with other ethnic group. But with different language, culture, religion, tradition and so on, we are known as a tolerence people and we are very proud of our country. You can watch many video about indonesia from foreigner's perspectives. Mindblowing. ❤

For those who want to pursue this rabbithole and don't (yet) know where to find the door - w1k1p3dia has a wonderful article titled "Languages of Indonesia". Ethnologue and Omniglot are other good resources.
While these 700+ languages _are_ separate languages (i.e., mutually unintelligible), most of them _are_ in the Malayo-Polynesian language family and therefore share some characteristics (roughly to the same degree that English and Hindi share characteristics, both being in the Indo-European language family). The great majority of the population speaks a language from this family. The next big concentration of languages (by number of languages) happens in Western New Guinea, where more than a hundred non-Malayo-Polynesian languages are spoken ([New Guinea] "is presently populated by almost a thousand different tribal groups and a near-equivalent number of separate languages, which makes New Guinea the most linguistically diverse area in the world."

The local languages can be extremely different, not just slightly different dialect, but actually different languages. For example, both my mom and my dad are from the same province in Sumatra. Their hometowns are only three-hour driving away. Yet, they don't understand each other when they speak in their local language, like at all.

Well someone might have explained it in much detail.
As someone who have lived in indonesia for few years (mainly bali) and traveled to a bunch of places all over indonesia,
I can say that the easiest way to imagine how diverse is the languages in indonesia is basically imagine it like how diverse the europe is.
Like neighboring places can have similarities like how portuguese and spanish / german and dutch for example.
    Or completely different language.
So imagine europe but way more diverse and complicated.
Hence the reason most of indonesian were trilingual.
    1st is local language
    2nd is indonesian
    3rd is english
And sometimes depends on their parents's origins, they can learn different local languages (even javanese language itself is very different when compared to east, central and west part of java) or foreign languages (such as chinese, dutch, etcs)
Even i myself got dumbfounded after finding out my javanese and some balinese i learned is practically useless when i go to the other main island.
Even the indonesian language itself is barely usable (the formal ones) because the people always mixes their local language with their indonesian.
Think of it like how filipinos mixes english with their tagalog. Thats how confusing it is lol.
Hope you didnt get overwhelmed by this wall of text and learned more about this country ദ്ദി ˃ ᵕ ˂ )

4:11 The island is divided into two regions, the western part being the territory of Indonesia and the eastern part being the country of Papua New Guinea. On this island, which is shaped like a bird of paradise, lies the highest mountain in Indonesia, namely Puncak Jaya (4,884 m). For the Indonesian region, the indigenous Papuan population is referred to as Orang Asli Papua, which consists of various ethnic groups spread across all districts and cities.

(as usual, someone who actually knows what they're talking about will have better information, but I haven't seen it posted here yet, so I thought I might as well post something)
Gamelan music is its own extensive, wonderful and well-furnished rabbithole. Here are some videos I've seen and like that can give you a good overview:
"Indonesian gamelan medley from Java, Sunda and Bali" (Aurél Holló channel - AurelHollo). 3rd comment has an index. The Sundanese part starts at 2:53. You will mostly find Balinese gamelan music on yt - I don't know if it predominates in Indonesia, but it seems to be the kind most commonly heard in the West (Europe and America).
"Balinese Gamelan Music on Microtonal Guitar - Chris Charles" (Microtonal Guitar - Tolgahan Çoğulu channel - microtonalguitar). As I've commented elsewhere, Marsya and Widi are confined to a Western scale by their instruments. This video shows what a fretboard would have to look like to play a Balinese scale. It doesn't entirely make sense to do that on a guitar, though (more on this later). Marsya is free to sing in one of the Sundanese scales and I wonder if she does that in the Sundanese passage in Mighty Island (does anyone know if this is the case?)
"Bali's Amazing, Interlocking Gamelan Music - feat. Nata Swara & KOBRA" (Augustine Esterhammer-Fic channel - esterhammerfic). This is an amazing analysis, breakdown, explanation and animation of gamelan music. The guy said he spent a year putting the video together. Clearly a labor of love.
"Tuning of Gamelan and Sensory Dissonance" (New Tonality channel - new_tonality). This explains two of the scales used in gamelan music, how they differ from the modern Western 12 tone equal-tempered scale and offers a theory of why they are the way they are (the guy in the video believes it relates to the overtone content of gamelan instruments - this is why I said that playing gamelan music on a guitar didn't necessarily make sense). Nice graphics and the explanation is a little technical, but I think most people who know a little about Western music should be able to follow it.

Just my 50 cent being an Indonesian who travel quite a lot in my own country:
9:30 don't put or mention them being in the same frame with us. we simply don't like them, and vice versa.
12:00 it's an illustration, or happened somewhere else, not Aceh. I was still in uni and volunteered a week after the tsunami there, and you have no idea how it felt to evacuates bags of bodies, approx 200k casualties.
13:20 humidity is crazy during wet season, since during dry season we often receive, i dunno what's it called, cold wind (??) from neighboring Australia. But all in all, first few days here you'll melt.
16:15 conversions are uncommon, religions are inheritance
18:00 before declaration of independence in 1945, indonesia consists of many many kingdoms and sultanates. Post declaration until fully recognised in 1949, we fought the dutch as a nation. though before 1945, the founders already long prepared the idea.
21:15 depends of the area. One province could use the same language but different dialects from its neighboring province, yet, a city could have totally different language from the neighboring city. Not to mention, some areas even have the mix between two languages and created a new language and dialects.
To sum it up, know Bahasa Indonesia (bahasa=language), respect other cultures and religions, and you're golden.

For your information, Indonesian people do not like the American Government because of past history but do not hate American society.

18:20 to answer your question here,
If i get my history lesson right(I'm Indonesian), the Indonesian youth had been building some kind of movement way before 1945. They had conference and stuff too back then. These students were the rallying cry for independence and unity. So you can say the people may still divided by some kind of regions based on the Dutch's government but they already fired up to be one nation.
When WW2 ended those groups of youth picked Ir. Soekarno as president and hurried him up to announce our independence. That's why in OUR history, 17th of August 1945 is the day of independence. But you'll find in almost any Western sources with the 1949 as the year instead bcs the Dutch and the rest of Western power reluctant to admit the initial date.

I think it's impossible just one video to tell the history of Indonesia in the past completely, the history of Indonesia is quite long because our civilization knows writing recorded in archaeological evidence began in the 4th AD. There were hundreds kingdoms rise and fall. Thousands of years ago it is very difficult to prove because it is only in the form of symbols on artifacts scattered in Indonesia. In addition, since the 4th century AD, the beginning of the emergence of kingdoms in this region (Now Indonesia). There were at least dozens of sultanates and kingdoms that were spread at this region on the same time, but they took turns because of wars and conquests too. Until the 15th AD, Western colonialists began to conquer part of the region by region, starting in sequence from Spain, Portugal, France, Britain and the longest was the Dutch who colonized 98% of the current territory of Indonesia, approximately 300 years, before the Nippon Empire / Japan invaded and seized most of the allied colonies, in East and Southeast Asia. But only 3.5 years occupying Indonesia then Japan lost the war against the allies in WW II when the USA bombed the two cities in Japan. Due to Japan's defeat and surrender to the allies without conditions on August 15, 1945, 2 days later there was a power vacuum in Indonesia and at that time the nationalist and political figures of Indonesia at that time proclaimed independence and 2 years later through the newly formed UN the government of the Republic of Indonesia lobbied to get recognition of independence from countries in the world even though from 1945-1949 there was a revolutionary war against the invasion and aggression of the Dutch backed by the British who invaded the Republic of Indonesia again to seize power over its former colonies. Yeah histories always interesting to learn. Many video about it in YT.

@DadDaughtersandDrinks To answer your question, Malaysia is not an archipelago by any stretch of the imagination (or by official international laws), except according to some Malay supremacists in Malaysia who are still stuck in a time warp created by European colonialists (i.e. the Brits). According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982 (UNCLOS III), an archipelagic state is an island country that consists of one or more archipelago. The Bahamas, Fiji, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Philippines are the five original sovereign states that obtained approval in the UNCLOS signed in Montego Bay, Jamaica on 10 December 1982 and qualified as the archipelagic states (an archipelagic state can designate the waters between the islands as sovereign archipelagic waters).
When the Europeans began to colonise the present day Indonesian archipelago (historically known as Nusantara, ‘nusa’ + ‘antara’, literally meaning ‘islands between’ or ‘enclosing islands’, an ancient indigenous name for the Indonesian archipelago predating the arrival of the white men), they referred to it as the Malay archipelago - how dare they! - primarily because they were clueless about that part of the world.
When the colonial powers met the locals who generally looked brown, they invented and then stuck to the term Malay race (Malay being probably the “most visible” ethnolinguistic group in the Malacca Strait, the busiest trading route in Southeast Asia, but originating from the time of the kingdom of Srivinaya or even ealier in the island of Sumatra in present day Indonesia) since they couldn’t fit the “Malays” in any major existing racial stereotypes then due to the fact that they were a product of a complex mixture of races (the concept of race is another colonial fantasy). In other words, the colonial powers falsely thought that only the Malays existed in Nusantara just because everyone looked brown to them!
Indonesians who fought all out to liberate their country from colonial powers would take umbrage at the term ‘Malay archipelago’ because of the aforementioned explanation. The term also negates the fact that Indonesia has a very complex and diverse population in terms of ethnicities, languages, religions, traditions and cultures in the archipelago (and Malays are only one of 1,000 something of ethnic groups under the the nation of Indonesia). Therefore, Indonesians prefer using their ancestors’ name for the archipelago - Nusantara.

I'm surprised to be the first to say this but: Burgerkill "Killchestra" - An Elegy (Official Video)
(overall, I'm not a Burgerkill fan, just not my type of music, but Killchestra - An Elegy really works for me)

You're not the first to request that song; a few others have over the last few months also. It's something I want to do with all my daughters together (we did one other Burgerkill song already, so I'd like to have them together for consistency), but it's been tough getting them all here. Maybe I'll just go ahead and do it myself :-)

Islam spread throughout the archipelago not because of coercion or conquest by colonial countries. Islam spread to Indonesia peacefully, not by coercion, not by betrayal and not by conquest. That is why many Indonesian people are friendly because Islamic teachings teach so. Likewise, Buddhism and Hinduism are not exactly the same as Buddhism in China, Korea, Thailand, Burma and Cambodia. Hinduism in Indonesia is not the same as Hinduism in India. This is very different from the spread of Christianity and Catholicism which were spread by coercion, by conquest and by war. The European colonizers, namely Spain, Portugal, England, the Netherlands and also Japan only wanted GOSPEL (spreading Christianity/Catholicism through war), GOLD (Indonesia's wealth) and GLORY (wanting victory).

Papua and Papua New Guinea is share the sampe Island. Papua is Indonesian, and the othe Papua New Guinea is a Country that not connected with Indonesia..
You can see that Papua are colored with Indonesia flag, and Papua New Guinea are not.. but they have the same look a like, coz they have the same DNA. They also have a connection DNA with Australian Aborigin. The original tribe of Australia..

Hello MK and thanks for this! I'd recommend Putri Ariani if you're looking to expand your roster of Indonesian artists (start with her winning the Golden Buzzer on AGT). Supporters of VOB are called Baladceprot (meaning friends of...). As with any population subject to colonialism, the effects are crippling and disastrous to native culture and pride. Perhaps that's why Indonesia so very strongly supports its artists and athletes on social media, particularly when they are recognized internationally. And yes, the US supplied information, money and backing to Suharto, the Indonesian Army and death squads for the genocide, as documented in various declassified files from the CIA and US Embassy in Jakarta.
