NOTE: the "family tree" graphic has an error. Under Ghom, it should be the Gluttony Aspect, not the Greed Aspect. Thank you to Nevalistis and the Diablo team for spotting the error :)
I always liked to imagine that the huge magical looking gem in the middle of Greed's lair enabled the goblins power to create portals thus sparking they're mad quest to continuously collect huge amounts of loot. Perhaps the discovery of the gem is what led her to abandon her post as Azmodan's lieutenant unable to resist its power to further her greedy ends.
When I first encountered a treasure goblin when D3 first came out and listened to the in-game lore, I figured that whoever heard “greed” and told the scholar had misheard “Gheed” and that the greedy merchant from D2 had been corrupted to now serve the prime evils. I think that would have been a cooler origin for “Greed.”
I always liked to imagine when I went into the vault, that if my character fell into the sea of gold down below the pathways, that due to how your character magnetises gold to them self, that they'd create a black hole effect and just be trapped in greed's realm collecting the gold like some form of living sinkhole vacuum. Just an amusing thought I suppose.
Maybe it is fake gold so it wouldn't be magnetized to your character. Can the Nephalem swim? I am not counting in swimming in rivers of Demon blood as you tear through the countless legions of Hell.
I think this is a fairly sound theory, and makes quite a bit of sense. Personally, I think that Azmodan himself serves as Pride, as that is the "root of all sin" and...he's an extremely proud demon. Pride is also the one lieutenant who isn't referenced anywhere in any form. Greed being a servant or former servant of Azmodan also would explain why the appearance of Treasure Goblins was relatively recent. The Prime Evils would not have appreciated a lieutenant of one of the Lesser Evils mucking about in Sanctuary while they were trying to corrupt humanity, so to avoid drawing their ire, Greed waited until all three had been defeated before attempting to harvest the wealth of Sanctuary.
Solid theory. Given the strength of your connection with the Blizzard D3 community managers, I wouldn't be surprised if, having not published any conflicting theories, they choose to adopt it.

It’s totally mostly a tribute to the classic arcade games “golden axe” which is the first game where the imps with sacks run around and you have to hit them to get food or magic potions before they run away and if you hit them enough they drop all their remaining loot and then run away fast
I agree wholeheartedly with this theory. I have been binge watching your lore series, and ran across this, but you bring up a lot of good points. It would also make sense why demons ignore the goblins, as they are well aware they would bring the wrath of the Baroness down on their own heads if they struck out against the goblins.
I love these lore videos. Are there any other youtubers that do gaming lore? I don't even play these games but I still come here to listen to the lore.
The reason the goblin presence started to show up, is because the falling star was supposed to herald the end times, before, they were content to go a little more slowly, to avoid someone like the Nephalem barging into her layer, and just breaking everything, stealing all her stuff, killing all her minions, and beating the tar out of her personally. But with Sanctuary about to end, and presumably be consigned to Oblivion, this was her last shot to steal everything not nailed down, then come back with a pry bar when everyone is dead
Pride's, first phase revolves around mirrors, which appear during the fight when Pride stops to admire himself in the mirrors, at which point we shatter the mirrors to do damage to him. After hitting 1 of each quarter of his health, he summons a huge reflection of the player at which point we need to dps the hell out of the illusion in a certain amount of time and if you fail you get one shotted by Pride.
Rhykker, love these vids mate they make me want to play d3 more. Blizzard owes you so much mate and we owe you more. You vids are always informative and useful. Thank you for all your hard work.
I think the theory is plausible. The thing I might say as to why she is called “greed” now vs the maiden of greed. And why the goblins suddenly became more prevalent beginning of d3. Let’s assume that d2 is when the lessers take he opportunity to take down the majors and asmodan is the leader. When greed defects perhaps she was a dynamic personality as well. But because she was created to be his Lieutenant and when she decides to defect. He not only strips her of her title but her entire personality as well. So she has nothing else to focus on but her primal nature: Greed. She arrives in the vault and has already established herself as the leader before he takes the title, now she has one thing to do. Gain all the riches which is why all the goblins now have to work overtime. My thoughts
We have no record of the Lord of sloth...... "Hey sloth Lord it's bio lore day...your going to be late..." Lord of sloth-"😧meh..i will do it tomorrow😪😪"
No joke, i spent time this morning doing A1 bounty runs and listening to all his lore videos. Towards the end of this one, I got access to the vault. Now if I could only get that damn ring...
@Rhykker 2:50 it’s a callback to the fantasy universe that inspired Blizzard’s Warcraft, Warhammer. Where goblins and orks are grown from fungus, instead of birthed.
I love so damn much Rhykker's dorky-funny aspect of himself that shows us on these videos, as I'm so used to his usual informative/serious/researcher one when explaining builds and Tiers on others. Keep up the amazing work man! You rock!
i actually just saw on the wiki of the sin lieutenants in diablo, and one of the parts under Trivia stated, "The enthroned horned skeletons seen in Leah's vision of Azmodan may be representations of the Sin Lieutenants. The central throne is empty however, suggesting that there are either only six Lieutenants, or that they actually represent the Great Evils." that actually could correspond to how you said greed betrayed Azmodan.
Really love your content, Rhykker. It keeps me interested in Diablo and makes the journey last that much longer. Wish we could have a steady release of Diablo content from Blizzard like overwatch or even hearth if that be the case.
I've never played any diablo game, actually the closest I'm to the francise is while I'm playing HotS, but for some reason I find these lore videos pretty interesting. Keep the good work Rhykker!
Thanks for a great video. They're always good, but this one holds more laughs and chuckles than normal. Had a bad day, so comming home, and getting this... Priceless... So thanks... :D
I have a question for folks: Which Lore do you prefer that of Diablo or Warcraft anf why? I've always been a HUGE Warcraft Lore nerd but been getting drawn more and more into Diablo's. Would love ot know other's thoughts! :)
Nice theory, keep on with the lore I'm aways lmao with this while I learn something. Well, that came sort of deep... anyways... Keep on with the good work Rhykker!
There's a small, insignificant error in your bit about bee hives. It doesn't detract from the video but it's worth noting. Honey bee hives have workers, drones, and queens. Workers are the ones responsible for collecting nectar and pollen while the drones are the males whose sole responsibility is to fertilize a virgin queen. Just a fun fact. Love your lore videos though! I've played Diablo quite a bit and I wouldn't know half of the lore without your lore videos. Thanks for the great content!
well, i wonder - if you're correct and Azmodan renounced her as the aspect/maiden of greed, does that mean that maybe someone else filled her previous position? we know that Malthael's previous position was filled by [don't remember the name-el] so it wouldn't be that far of a stretch to assume the same went for hell as well.
What I don't get yet is the black soulstone cinematic, in it you see seven thrones with seven demons (probably the lieutenants) and they seemed to fuse in one being (azmodan)
Good job bringing that up! I was going to include that in the video at first, but that scene is really up for interpretation. Some say those figures were the sin lieutenants - others say they were the various Evils
well isn't Azmodean the lord of sin? Perhaps the lieutenants are like a multiple personality disorder and are part of Azmodean himself. All of the lieutenants combined form "sin".
While I enjoy this theory and love that you break down the lore, I'd laugh if blizzard decided for D4 to show Greed as the aspect (making snitchley just a goon of sorts).
I like your theory, i wonder if Asmodan would replace Greed with another demon as new Sin Lieutenent of Greed. I also hope that we will have more maidens in the sins lieutenents like maybe a jelly like maiden of sloth would be funny haha
My group of friends have recently got back into Diablo3 since the announcement of D4 and I found your channel and lore videos as something to watch during down time and I had a thought about who could possibly be the lord of pride I can’t remember word for word what you said in your other video but maybe the lord of pride winds up being Imperius maybe this whole time he’s been a spy for the burning hells he is very prideful and when the angels had captured diablo he had said Imperius was hiding something
As of this point, I have found over 200 rainbow goblins (not including the double goblins), and run Whimsydale each time. I have yet to get the wings... and it has made me feel like a failure in life.
So you touched on all the sins except Pride I noticed. You stopped at Greed, which I understand since the video was theorizing greed's position overall with Azmodan. Now however, you have me curious on who Pride might be.
i think they serve "pride" because they were an answer from blizzard to the accusations of D3 being too bright. they pridefully defended the game........ which would mean that blizzard is the lord of pride
In my personal opinion I believe since is known as the queen of green perhaps rather that her being the maiden of of greed that instead she was in fact married to the Lord of greed and felt that her and her husband's wealth could be increased if they separated from azmodan and stole from the humans then when her husband refused out of fear of azmodan she killed him and took his army and created a world were she could be alone and build her wealth and treasure and this also meant more for her instead of a 50/50 split with her other half possible
This is not on topic but I recently killed some elite named "Rhykker". It died, I started to go further and after 2 seconds I realized what I just killed and I was like "w8 what? :D". I didn't know they named one after you, that's nice.

They go to a different part of the Vault. I don't understand the issue.
do you watch world cup? what is your fav team?
Italy :(
Turmoil maybe they’re just teleporting back to Sanctuary...
I am pretty sure older and older Rhykker gets... He is turning in to a Canadian Dekard Cain.
Rhykker: "Hey folks! Stay awhile and listen!"
But no one asked how are the treasure goblins
lmao sad gob hours
Dead. We killed them for treasure.
Tasty with apple sauce.
They are dead greedy little hobitisss
exactly what i thought at the start of the video :)

Queen Greed divorced Asmodan for his love of Cydaea. Also, her love of wealth couldn't resist the idea of taking half of Azmodan's stuff.
Darin Preston savage but true.
Darin Preston I think you mean divorce on earth
Azmodan must have been a US service member, since Greed fits the archetype of a Dependapotomus
@@dhamon45 savage

Your work and dedication is amazing! much love Rhykker
The reason the Lt. of Sloth is not seen is because they are too lazy to fight. They instead send their Aspects to do their work.
Maybe even too lazy to give the order too? lol
That is not very slothful.
He'll get around to it ok!?!
The theory makes a lot of sense tbh.
Dude great content just finished the first 10 Diablo Lore you did you HAVE to continue, and we'll "Stay awhile and listen."
YES! I just found out about this channel and i love this lore explained!
Man even listening to non-diablo lore is great Diablo lore listening thanks man 👍🔥👌🔥🔥🔥
Been looking for a lore update for week, was very excited to watch this one!
Finally! I thought you had given up on these! Please bring them out more frequently, I'm really enjoying them :)

Why is Gobilns
Juan Cena This question was asked by Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy.
ahwayzcool I know.... why would I quote it if I didn’t know what it was from
I wasn't trying to be a dick by saying that. Was just trying to add some humor to the statement. :-)
They don't think it be like it is, but it does is Goblins.
Everyone's asking what is Goblins,why is Goblins,but nobody asks..how is Goblins ;_;
Your lore videos are awesome and super funny! Please continue this series!
Almost 400k! Few more sick lore videos like this and you'll be there in no time!
I love your lore series. You narrate it very well. Keep it up!
But, what about rainbow goblins? They do not go back to the vault
Think about it. rainbows and unicorns are gay. That's pride's realm. lol

Interestting theory. I like it, though it sets my mind to spinning. The Countess from Diablo 2..was she a disciple of greed perhaps?
I believe the Countess was a corrupted human, just like Blood Raven, not a demon.
By the way, Rakanoth, Lord of Despair is one of Andariel's lieutenants.

Malthael* How can you not know His name?
You'll be alright, just keep grinding and you'll get there
angel of death
Malthael's the angel of death, not aspect... and death's not a sin, much less one of the seven deadly sins

I've encountered two different vaults. The first vault it was filled with goblins of all kinds and the second had the peons.
Rhykker has been abit obsessed with treasure goblins recently, I think farming for rainbow goblins has started to get to him. Should we be worried? :D
Where is Gamora? Who is Gamora? Why is Gamora?

We meet Greed and Vidian after the death of Azmodan. It may be that after his death, since they had no leader, they did it on their own.
Don't worry about Sloth. He'll get to it later.

i like how in the lore the treasure goblins are common but when i try to go find some it takes me 45 minutes just to find one

Queen of greed is nothing comparing to Wall Street. I guess that’s why she had her title as the “mistress of greed” removed.

What about rainbow goblins. Are they just bonus content or some kind of easter egg, or they have their own backstory and part in lore.
Petr Pikna I think that those goblins are just smarter than the other one. They just can open a new portal to a different world full of treasures.
Does the Realmwalker and his Realm of the Banished fit into this part of Diablo Lore? He uses the same yellow portals...
addendum is fun to say
Damn..... I hope they adopt this theory into the official lore.
