Sarah, watching you appreciate this made me relive it. 1969, I was just a foolish, lonely kid in the Navy, far from home, and I hated the Navy; though I was very glad not to be in Vietnam. I just wanted to be discharged and go home to my sweetheart. I took refuge in the great music then. When I first listened to the whole second side of Abbey Road, I was astonished. How could it be possible? After all the great songs we heard them do in my childhood and teenage years, and now comes this-all of Abbey Road! A masterpiece! It is my favorite of all their recordings. I felt everything you felt first hearing it. It washed over me like waves of brilliant colors, made me feel something profound, brought me to tears, made me so happy to have such music happen in my youth, my lifetime. Long live the Beatles.
I started to leave a comment, but you summarized my experience nearly perfectly - I was between deployments, stationed in Hawaii when the album was released. I was so happy for the young lady to hear and feel what we felt, but in a completely different time and place and still be moved to tears of joy. Every piece of Beatles music that we heard back then made a lasting impression, but I wrote a lot of that off to youth, the fear of the war, getting high, etc....but it has stood the test of time and I would like to think that this will be as recognizable as the opening to Beethoven's 5th, hundreds of years from now. Those four guys changed the very foundations of popular music - there has been no one like them and I don't expect that there will ever be.
The entire medley is just amazing. The song "The End" was the last time they recorded when they were all in the studio together. The drum solo was a negotiation between Ringo and the rest of the band. They wanted more and he didn't want to do it at all. Ringo hated drum solos, and still does.

Every time I hear Golden Slumbers start it reminds me that it was the beginning of the end of the Beatles. Though Abbey Road wasn't the last album they released, it was the last one they recorded...and these are the last three songs on that album. To me it was their farewell and still moves me. The Beatles broke up no long afterwards. Thanks, Sarah! Loved this version of the trilogy....hadn't heard it before.

The Beatles were an amazing band and, almost everything they produced was pure perfection. Another group that could produce some amazing moments on stage were the Grateful Dead. I think you have done a song or two by them, but their interpretation of a cover song is maybe one of the best things ever committed to tape. The song "Morning Dew", written by Canadian Songstress Bonnie Dobson, from the famous 5/8/77 concert at Cornell University's Barton Hall is one such moment. I humbly request you do yourself a favor and give it a listen. You will be changed, and impressed.
Leo, my first show was 9/6/80 in Lewiston, Maine. The third song of the first set was one of the best versions of "Sugaree" I have ever heard, before or since. As I said, it put me on the bus for the next 15 years. But I was looking for something more gentle for Sarah. A nice "Sugaree" would do very well I think.

Definitely not The Beatles, just a poor cover version. If you listen to the original recording you’ll get to experience Paul’s soul pouring out in Golden Slumbers… one of the greatest experiences in music.

Check out The Anologues, a Dutch band who cover all the Beatles catalogue and do a superb job of it. They don't attempt to look like them or impersonate their voices. They use authentic instuments and the sound reproduction is amazing. The nearest you will get in my opinion to listening to the Beatles performing songs they never performed in public.
Hopefully anyone watching will now go and watch the original version. I realise that aggressive blocking makes it hard to react to actual Beatles tracks sometimes. The artist covering it did a pretty good job though.

I was 14 when this came out. This whole album just blew me away. The BEATLES are the best most prolific band ever. 😊
