This game is the last Toshinden for PSX and is considered one of the worst fighting games for the console. The graphics are poor, controls are clunky and music is irregular. Other than that, it features some cool artwork and some nice music.
The first video contains a simple walkthrough with the Subaru Team and Subaru himself as the character that leads in the ending (each character has its own ending fragment). The second part is like an extras video that contains the minigames and the worthy artwork. The minigames aren't fully played as they were most probably thought for record beating and multiplayer matches. The artwork part of the video begins at 36:58. -

OMG, the intro is chilling me out, so nostalgic. This is the first game i played on PS1
The opening still gives me the chills to this day. Miss this game a lot.
Wow so much hate for this. This was my first BAT and it was slow but I grew to love it. Vermilion was so OP.
I don't care that the graphics were bad for PSX standard.
I don't care that the animations were clunky.
All I care about is beating the crap out of everything with a sword.
This game reminds me of EvilZone on the PS1.
I didn't even know a 4th entry was available. I would love to play it just to see where the story went from the Toshinden tournaments of the previous games.
Man, I remember playing this back in the day. I know fans call this garbage but I dunno, I enjoyed it. It had a lot of content and even though the game felt a lil slow, there was a lot to it. You could make some pretty epic combos if you played enough. I like the style and the characters.. Also the mini games you unlocked were so fun!
It is! The moves(my opinion) are just awesome, much better than any other games, the combos are pretty cool too

well at least the intro is cool :) artstyle looks really familiar too.. it has that Fatal Fury OVA / Gowcaiser / Saber Marionette J look

I had this game and it was definetely the worst in the series! I love the others and especially the music. It was incredible!

I actually liked the battle system and special attacks in this one. But it lacked characters (only 13) and the loading times were horrendous. But yeah, 3 was the best since it had plenty of cool attacks and a buttload of characters (32).
Dude. Almost HALF of them were simply palette swaps of the heros.
I used to LOVE the Toshinden games and had no idea about this one. It looks SO BAD. The graphics and characters and style are worse than the first Virtua Fighter, and even that game was awesome for its time! It's like the devs gave up on the series and licensed it out to some college designer class to do.
cinnamonbeard visually, i think this looks way better then the first virtua fighter on saturn. Goodness, the characters in virtua fighter are visually so bland and boring.
It always bugged me that Bang-Boo's beginning move and position was crooked.

Well, at least the music was good. I don't know how a series so good as Toshinden gotten so bad so quickly. I guess the developers, Tamsoft Corporation, obiviously didn't give a flying fuck about making fighting games anymore.
Tamsoft mainly does low-budget titles to this day since 1992. It's impressive how they can still churn out simple yet offbeat titles.
game makers didn't think they need to put a cuban character before....this is unknown what is bang-boo's human name...and it's also unknown how does genma and judgement look unmasked.

it is so bad, it shouldnt carry the name toshinden. worst fighting game ive ever seen from 1995 till 2020. even the soundtrack is pure dogshit compared to 2 and 3

Hahaha... I can't stop laughing at this. 12 minutes in and not only is the gameplay clearly terrible but... why is the "plot" so concerned about how we shouldn't feel bad about beating children? This is an amazing artifact of the PSX era.
You're right. I love Soul Calibur but it doesn't have half the charm Toshinden had.

Toshinden peaked at 2 then declined.
For me, T1 and T3 were pretty fun 2,4 and so on were meh.
I'm so sad that I can't play this anymore. my very first game on the PS1 and also my favorite one. spending over 100 hours playing this.
Wow, this isn't even close to the style or quality of the Toshindens I played as a kid. For one, the music in those games kicked ass.
put 1.5 vel speed in the video, enjoy the real BAT 4.

Toshinden 4 problem is the Gameplay and Mechanics, and is very slow 😕
Toshinden 3 still the best and most fun one to play in Franchise, Toshinden 1, 2, Remix and URA are Great but compared to Toshinden 3 they are inferior too

I use to search name-of-the-game plus number to see if it had sequels. This one had. But like dino crisis 3, and bust a groove 3, they simply destroyed the series.

It took me many years to find out there was a fourth Toshinden. Unfortunately this attempt ton "reboot" the series with new characters does not much for me. The 3 other games have much more charm.

thats right ! the game was really a disapointment . =( i thought first that this sequel would be a really big improvement for the series but it was like an uppercut right to the balls . =/ only the minigames was the best on this game but still this game was and is the baddest one of the series . i would be suprised if someone would remake the series and its getting to be the best fighting game series ever . but this is impossible now . =P

This game in my opinion killed the series. Forgettable characters, slow gameplay, poor graphics, a very short story mode, low character roster. This is why I think BAT 3 was the best game in the series it gave us a lot of characters the graphics were ok for it's time and it had a unique style of gameplay that tamsoft didn't use again or at least use in this game. I'm grateful that I remember this series and it's ashame that they went out with a splat.

Man I wish my parents did at least a LITTLE BIT of research before buying this garbage game for me as a kid. I can only imagine they just bought the cheapest game in the store at the time lol.
There were some great games on the PS1: Several Final Fantasys, MGS, Castlevania, Spyro etc. I played none of those, but hey I got Toshinden 4! gg
edit: Rook was pretty hot tho! Probably one of the first characters that made me realize that I might not be into girls. Weird I was like 9 years old back then...
@metalheadband666 And Toshinden 3 was one of my favorite games of the PSX era, but I'll never call it a GOOD game. It's okay if you enjoyed it, I've enjoyed plenty of bad games. But that doesn't make it not be a bad game.

Dawn Syndrome and autistic epileptic children toting sharp and blunt objects, whacking the shit out of each other. I remember playing this back in the day and asking myself what the hell the programmers were smoking when they made this vomit!

Terrible. Glad it never made it over. 1-3 were good games. This put the franchise into a super limbo. I hope they can recover and make a return.

Mike Brooks agreed. Since it has most fighters and the unlockables was crazy. From what i remembered there was an adam character that was OP and took me several weeksto figure out the secret moves. Didn't it involved the select/taunt button?
you obviously liked the 2 and 3 better because you never played the 4th. It is MUCH superior than all the games before.
They made a reboot for the Wii in 2009 but it came out in Japan
Damn...this looks slow and clunky as hell. The series has always been a bit on the clunky side with its gameplay, but they were at least playable. This is a game released in 1999, the same year that Bloody Roar 2 came out, and that was miles faster than this. What the hell happened here? Did they just stop caring about the Toshinden series? I understand fans got tired of it, but if they really didn't give a damn, they shouldn't have made this at all.
