As a house rabbit owner, they are my fuzzy children, it is impossible for me to imagine keeping a rabbit to eat it. I however am really pleased to see how well your rabbits are taken care of and the excellent conditions you keep them in. It is also nice that the rabbits that are taken for meat, you don't waste any of the animal. Thank you for for being a such a humane rabbit/animal keeper!
I like your comment, not that that should matter at all but clearly there's room for rabbits to be fuzzy children as well. I bet lots of J's rabbits end up as pets. I read this interesting bit from something cant remember what it was. Our society has become ...um... very limited. In the old days we used to eat all sorts of meats. We used to eat rabbits and game, deer, squirrel, wild rabbits, pheasant, quail, elk cow pigs sheep, goats, chickens, fish from the ocean, fish from the streams and lakes, . And there were all sort of vegetables too. We've lost types of tomatoes that we used to have in the 1920's and '30's! Genetic diversity has plummeted! And our food choices are pretty much pig, cow, chicken (fish for folks who like to eat fish but even that they say you shouldn't eat to many fresh water fish because of pollutants in the water) So J from Ohio... would he eat lots of ocean fish, would that fish be reasonably fresh? That could go either way in some areas and it could also get expensive if you're inland. Pigs, cows and chicken... that's the diet for the average American. That diet doesn't have nearly enough variety to keep us healthy. Just a thought and I put it here cause you're obviously a bunny's mum or dad and you simply put up a comment that me think of that. That's okay I'm sure a great lot of his bunnies end up as some kid's pet that they will remember for their entire lifetimes! There's a place for all of it.
A human rabbit keeper is a person like me that doesn't hurt them I care and love my rabbit and miss my other one that died poor Goldie my rabbit Bugsy I love he's doing good right now
@@Fenikkusuuk you know what's disgusting parents buy rabbits for kids around Easter time and then they let it go so cruel and ugly for a human being the treating defensive harmless animal like s*** I know people have to survive but people get what they get coming to them you eat s*** you get cancer
It's nice that you have the luxury keeping rabbits as pets; let's hope that the economy doesn't get so bad that your thoughts begin to turn from a nice pet to a nice dinner.
we used to visit grandma every Saturday with fresh eggs from our little farm, (she lived in the big city, Detroit) her rabbit man always came right after we got there with 6 skinned/frozen rabbit's every week. no order/no call, he would come like the milkman. rabbit for supper every Saturday, so good.
The wife and I recently started raising New Zealand's for our rabbits and love it. Sold off our first kits recently and were surprised how easy they were to sell (we were in the process of moving and didn't want to worry about moving the kits). Can't wait till we get to expand and start showing them off more!
You have one of the best if not the best simple rabbitry I've seen, good job! Love how you use freezers and their racks for housing, looks very organized and bright. Chicken wire is too hard on their tender feet so those racks are awesome! We do not raise rabbits but have friends who do and enjoy rabbit once in awhile. With working and all we are not ready to start raising them but may in the future when I semi retire. Have been reading about enzymes and you mention you toss the stomach's and intestines into the compost pile. I won't get into the science of enzymes here as I'm no expert, just want to learn how to stay healthy. But they would be very beneficial for including in pet and yes, even our foods if one can stomach it. Natives used to eat the contents of the stomach and intestines while butchering, apparently raw was the way to go:~/ Sorry if makes anyone's stomach do a flip but when one is not well, there is healing qualities to this type of, well, food:) All the best! Now I'm off to watch your Bulk chicken Feeder vidoe:)
This was all very interesting. I've seen many folks that raise rabbits but never understood what all the different uses could be for them besides pets or meat. Thanks for sharing.
When homesteading you have to adjust to meet your needs. As far as my family goes I found chickens more appetizing and easier to raise. great video! Keep them coming. I don't always comment but I very seldom missing a one.
I am sooo ready to get back into raising rabbits. We do butcher a few chickens from time to time, but rabbits are so much easier to butcher and I actually prefer the meat. Thanks for another great video!
I've started my marathon of you kind sir. Very interesting. Rabbit Tastes and smells a lot like chicken. My mother in law fixed it all the time. Good stuff. Thank you so much for the education.
Warmest coat I ever owned was made with rabbit fur. Warmest mittens I ever wore were made with rabbit fur. They were a gift in the seventies before animal activists threw blood at people wearing fur. I've never raised bunnies, but I came across rabbit meat in our local Convenient Food Mart. I cooked it in the oven with carrots, onions, and potatoes, and it was delicious. Bunnies raised at home would be awful to kill for food unless I was starving. They are just so cute, soft and cuddly.
You are just awesome! Thank you so much for your videos. I just started my own rabbitry and watching your videos has helped me so much. I plan to try and make moccasins and mittens with some of my rabbit hides. You rock! Keep up the videos and I wish you and your family the best.
Never thought too much about the cycle of use but you did explain the cycle of use great. I too have the same skin condition as you. You handle it well. Great videos. I wait for your videos. Great stuff. Dennis from Michigan
Having just found your channel I find it very informative. I like the fact that you use all of your rabbit and not just parts, that is a problem I have when people go “hunting” using say only the head as a trophy. Your setup is fantastic and while I do not have any rabbits as yet this is something I hope to be able to do in the future. Thank you for taking the time to make your videos.
Excellent video! We will be getting meat rabbits here in the next couple weeks. Thanks for the info, Its always interesting to see how they benefit your homestead. We look forward to seeing how we will benefit from them as well.
When I was a kid we had a dedicated compost bin for rabbit poop. Get a big plastic trash can (the kind with wheels on them) and drill a 1" hole near the bottom on one side so it will drain. Layer hay and poop and when it's full dump in 2 pints of fishing worms from the bait store. Close the lid but leave a gap so air can get in. The worms will work it over in a few months and it's ready for the garden.
Excellent information on all the uses and benefits of raising rabbits. Makes me want to start right now! Too many other irons in the fire right now though. :)
It would be really cool to see you wearing a rabbit skin jacket come winter time John. Maybe that could even lead to yet another by product outlet! Great video my friend and best of luck for the future.
I just wanted to let you know i mentioned you in a recent video i posted. I am thanking everyone that we have learned from over the last couple of years.
If your looking for a way to save some money on feed and do not use pesticides in your yard you could collect bundles of clover and other grasses, tie them with string hang them to dry and then toss the bundles into a plastic tote for storage. I usually can cut my hay costs in the winter in half by doing this. Now my rabbits also have outdoor runs that are in contact with the ground during the spring and summer months that are movable but you could feed them this all year round if you don't want to do that.
great video man I love your videos I jus started a rabbitry well right now I have only 2 Jr's a buck and a doe but man I've learned so much from your channel man keep up the good work 😊😊
I raised Rex rabbits to show when I was younger! Love them. I am not fond of Rabbit meat. My husband and kid like the meat, but prefer to hunt for wild rabbit with beagles. I am starting out homesteading, we have chickens so far, I want to raise goats for meat and milk, cheese and soap. Husband is not on the same page, I will keep working on him!
Nice video and I love your cages. Wish I had know about them before I built the traditional ones. When it comes to raising them in a SHTF situation you need to figure out how you are going to feed them when pellets are not available. Can be done but it takes planning before it happens. After is too late. Depending on where you live winter can be a big challenge. Just food for thought.
Great video! I just love your way of expressing things! Another idea, not for the faint of heart, is the babies that die can go into a glass jar with 70% rubbing alcohol and become a wet specimen. Also there is a need for rabbit meat in the raw feeding community (people who feed their cats and dogs raw meat and organs) and those prices can go $4 - $5 a pound. I raise French Angora for wool and of course show babies (and food for those who don't make the cut) as well as New Zealand (husbands rabbits) and Lionhead (my sons rabbits). I hope to get into doing pelts and when I do I want to buy some of your rex! I've found mini's but cannot find standard rex here in Pataskala Ohio. I love having a mix of colors in the barn and sometimes I mix up the breeds for no particular reason. I've found that a French Angora and New Zealand (same exact size and body type) make for super soft short haired babies! I think they'd do well for pelts, but they certainly are not rex! Thanks so much for the great videos and please let me know when you'll have some for sale if you're anywhere near me, think I remember hearing you're in Ohio also. I'm totally willing to drive for bunnies!
An account used to say, it's not a savings, it's a cost avoidance. He went to smarty school and I didn't so I suppose he knows something. I like saving too!
Those hutches are great, ever thought about putting one of those long tupper ware tubs underneath to catch the droppings ? those tubs are cheap and you could just drag them out when you need too.
If you dont need them for use with the pelts, you can pull the skin and fur off the tail very easily. You can dry them for a while and they make great cat toys for flea market sales.
Off all, that’s what the meat you use for your cats from the rabbits is called. Everyone who buys dog food for their pets is feeding off all to their pet. We live in North Alabama where Tyson and others are king. The chicken industry is very big here. They use just about everything left over from the processing of the chickens in dog feed. There is a fleet of “gut trucks” running continuously between the processing plants and the dog food plant.
Hey jnull I was wondering if you could do a video on your opinion on all your rabbit breeds? Im going to get some meat rabbits pretty soon I am thinking about getting new Zealands and Californians and maybe a rex or two keep the videos coming rely enjoy the channel.
Great video brother. I am looking to start some up and keep them outside. Mainly for the meat and selling as they expand if you will. What's your suggestion on a cheap hearty breed for this? I obviously have alot to learn about cycles and housing etc. Thanks!
Jnull, very good video. thanks for the upload. Its amazing how much synergy is with rabbits. completely unknown that they do all of that. question, if you will, how many rabbits does one need to start off small ? also, i see you upgraded your rabbit " house " from the video i watched with pc fans ran off solar. im sure the rabbit house you have now is much better, but could a person just get by with your basic rabbit house? and any tips you can give to such ?
Hello! I really like all your videos and do have a question about your rabbits. Does it matter to breed the rabbits with the same litter? I hear stories that it doesn't matter and some say yes it matters. What you think and how you do it to breed them.... Thank You,
Thank-you for all of this info, I didn't realize there were so many benefits. I've been curious as to why I see so many homesteaders doing quail & pheasant. Ranae at Michigansnowpony explained quail. But why pheasant? About 30 years ago we tried the quail venture, very expensive & not enough return to justify, in our case.. Would you please explain why pheasant? In our neck of the woods, there are a few quail/pheasant farms, but they raise them by the thousands. They are then sold to hunting ranches, (that in itself is a long story), so the city folks who come to hunt will get their guaranteed limit
The larvae you reference is that something natural or do you put it in their manure and their manure just feeds the larvae? I also heard that rabbit urine is it natural fly deterrent but that appears to be BS because my rabbits are in a colony and there’s constantly flies in the stall 🤷🏻♀️🐰 haha. Great income ideas. Thx!!
Ok, saw some of your videos and my wife was sold. Today we picked up a breeding pair and went to a feed store for the nesting box and food. We already had a hitch but she, of course, wants me to build one of your models (thanks bro!).. Anyway, I'll be picking your brain with questions in the future but I have a couple now. Do I absolutely have to separate the buck and the doe? They're together for now until I can get another hutch. Do they need vaccines? Thanks and thanks for the awesome videos. Keep spending my money for me too lol. Oh, do you have a video on how to treat the pelt?
Ok, I would separate the doe and buck as soon as you can, not only will it prevent unwanted breedings, but does get territorial sometimes and just don't want some dude in their house..lol. We don't vaccinate our rabbits and have not had any issues with that, and yes we have videos working and preserving the hides. I think one is called rabbit hides for clothing material or something close. Hope this helps and good luck bro..........................J
jnullo, those ridges behind you look familiar! What state are you? I'm from NW Georgia, Blue Ridge is to my East, Chattanooga is to the N, and Fort Payne,Ala. To the Southwest. Also do you have the Flemish Giants? Price range?
Aloha, mahalo 4 the great & thorough info on rabbits. Can you suggest a meat breed that would be best for humid & hot weather conditions? Happy & safe holidays...
When i was a kid we raised French Lops Ear. We got 35-65 dollars back in the old days by they had electric. I guess they can go for over 100 dollars now. But they wasn't feed rabbit's. I suppose you could eat them but costly.
I love your cages!! Do you have plans for them? Also, how do you preserve your skins? I've come across some seemingly complicated methods that I don't know if I have the space/skill for. Any good tips?
I would like to start breeding rabbits for our family food here in the Philippines. Do they do okay in the tropics? Only bunnies available here come from a pet shop. Would they be suitable? Rabbit food is not available. Will they grow and develop on chicken or pig food as there's plenty of that here.
Which rabbit breed is best for north Texas? Our summers are miserable hot...would they survive even if given bottles of ice and plenty of shade during the summer?
they do in Oklahoma so I would think they would in northern Texas as well you probably wouldn't want to raise fuzzy lops, lion heads or that type but meat rabbits, and most pet rabbits should be good. the others would probably as well but be careful to make sure plenty of shade
As a house rabbit owner, they are my fuzzy children, it is impossible for me to imagine keeping a rabbit to eat it. I however am really pleased to see how well your rabbits are taken care of and the excellent conditions you keep them in. We raised night crawlers in our rabbit poop and sold those to local tackle shops.

Very well explained video.
The rabbit manure outside also attracts earthworms like crazy.
Nice looking rabbits ! take care god bless ! :-)
Love rabbits!1 they are so useful !1 and cure , too!1 we use to raise them on our farm, too! I miss having them!1
Rabbit tree???? They grow on trees??? That's awesome... :D
+jnull0 you should make a vid on how to preserve the skins! that would be great.
If you dont need them for use with the pelts, you can pull the skin and fur off the tail very easily. You can dry them for a while and they make great cat toys for flea market sales.

I Think we should call ourselves Rabbiteers. Like the 3 Musketeers!!
Make a tour video around your homestead maybe I just started watching but great videos
excellent presentation.
I have rabbits and I love them
Very informative!
Thank you for the video
Such a great guy, i like you
It isn't just the ears you can dehydrate for dog treats. You can also dehydrate the feet the same way, just takes a little longer.
My son is going to start breeding Rabbits within a month or so.
Great video brother. I am looking to start some up and keep them outside. Mainly for the meat and selling as they expand if you will. What's your suggestion on a cheap hearty breed for this? I obviously have alot to learn about cycles and housing etc. Thanks!

what state do you live in?
+Michigan Mister I live in Kansas, SW KS to be exact.
dang, I thought Kansas was a playground for pheasant? guess the raise them everywhere now. maybe I'm thinking the Dakotas? take care, thank you.
+Michigan Mister the majority of our pheasant are wild, only the big hunting ranches buy them.
ameen. i like your rabbits cages on how you set up them.
Cool video....how do you process the rabbit ear for dog "chew toys" ? .... the ears have hair on them .....

Which rabbit breed is best for north Texas? Our summers are miserable hot...would they survive even if given bottles of ice and plenty of shade during the summer?
they do in Oklahoma so I would think they would in northern Texas as well you probably wouldn't want to raise fuzzy lops, lion heads or that type but meat rabbits, and most pet rabbits should be good. the others would probably as well but be careful to make sure plenty of shade
what do you feed your rabbits?
Is there any value in raising Angora rabbits?
