    Paul, you have a fantastic job of explaining everything about the connections with existing trackage and how people will actually use the new stations and cross connections in the future. You should be employed by future rail projects as a publicity promoter as you you see the construction as an end-user point of view. Well done and thank you!
    Between you and @Taitset we have “down under” equivalents of Geoff Marshall and RMTransit.

      Honestly I've learnt so much from these fellas yt vids that whenever trains or the metro is brought up with mates I start rattling off the info they've provided. Wherein the past I would've shrugged and said "your guess is as good as mine".

      Nah. The locals are much better than RMTransit: they don’t introduce their naive politics into their videos. I went from enjoying RM to not wanting to watch him again.

      Thanks David, for your wonderful feedback. I did do a publicity role for the Jubilee Line Extension in London back in 1999. Although I'm open to doing a similar role now, I wouldn't want it to prevent me from doing these videos. It was watching Geoff Marshall's videos that inspired me to start my channel!

    Thanks for making these very comprehensive and enjoyable videos. Living (and relying on public transport) in Melbourne means I'm excited about this project and it's great to see so much information about it in one place (ok, two places!). I also like that you included some of the artwork that's been put up on some of the hoarding. You've put a lot of work into this, and your work and enthusiasm is appreciated!

    Wonderful conclusion to this series! Hopefully you also get to make a series on Metro 2 one day. And I'm just rather amused that it should all conclude at South Kensington station, the most famously underused of all Melbourne stations.

    Museum Station Melbourne was renamed because the Melbourne Museum physically moved to a different location. The Museum used to be housed in the State Library facility and was more know for the museum than the library outside of academic circles. So the name was changed to Melbourne Central still being reflective of its location. Sydney had nothing to do with it in what was a far less connected time than now.

    If that canopy is for South Kensington Station I'm glad there is some plans to upgrade it even if it's a minor one, as you yourself probably realised it's not great. Even if it's just a clean up and some more shelter that would be good. But the big thing is the platforms, they really are not wide enough. I have heard somewhere that they plan to remove the tracks alongside the Metro Tunnel portal once it opens (I do hope they provide another connection from the Werribee/Williamstown lines to the Sunbury line though if that happens), and if they did one would think that would provide a chance to widen Platform 1. I don't know what you could do with Platform 2 due to the RRL tracks being there, perhaps with the Sunbury line tracks gone the tracks and both platforms could be moved so Platform 2 could be widened from the front instead of the back. I do hope though that something is done to make it more inviting, when the RRL was completed they funded a mural for the front of the station on Childers Street, however sadly that was painted over when the construction of the tunnel portal started. Perhaps re-instate that.

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Aiden, yes the canopy is a good start! It could definitely do with more shelters! Yes the tracks alongside the tunnel probably won't be used that much after Metro Tunnel, but they could be used for limited stop Werribee/Williamstown services. Hopefully something will happen to improve this station. It's a very poor cousin to the gorgeous South Kensington station in London, and I was a little disappointed when I arrived there for the first time!

    Several people have commented that the museum has been relocated but fail to say where to. I would assume this would be Science Works at Spotswood, which appeared to be in its infancy when I was there ( when the Star Trek exhibition was on show in the 1990s). The nearby pumping station was really worth seeing! It has been 20 years since my last visit to Melbourne, so I am looking forward to seeing it again. An extremely comprehensive video, a far cry from the vague information I could ( not ) find on station entrances for the Sydney Metro particularly North Sydney (Victoria Cross), such as whether there will be subterranean connections to the existing North Sydney station.

      Nup the Museum was moved to a new (ugly) building next to the Royal Exhibition Building on Nicholson Street, Carlton. It was such a pity as I used to love visiting in the old Library, it had charm. Once they built the new one I stopped going.

    Just a little tip for the City Loop, there are two tunnels that do not change direction at all.
    The Clifton Hill services (the Mernda and Hurstbridge lines) which operate from Platform 1 at the underground stations and from Flinders St, along with platform 9 at Southern Cross always runs clockwise. (Flinders St > Southern Cross > Flagstaff > Melb Central > Parliament, followed by Jolimont)
    And before they join the Metro Tunnel, the Dandenong services (Cranbourne and Pakenham lines) operates from Platform 2 at the underground stations, Southern Cross Platform 12 and normally Flinders St Platform 6; these services always run counter-clockwise (Parliament > Melb Central > Flagstaff > Southern Cross > Flinders St, followed by Richmond)
    Only the Northern Loop trains (Craigieburn & Upfield Lines) regularly run direct between Parliament and Flinders St, and since they do change directions, to go back to either station you would either have to go around the Loop, use a couple of trams, or walk.

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that's right! I probably should have mentioned that its only some of the lines that switch directions. Thanks for explaining that further! It's complicated and I really hope that in the future, all services would run in the same direction around the city loop!

      The issue was a change was needed as the museum moved and I believe the shopping centre, which had tried to have the name changed earlier (and was rejected) was willing to pay for the new signage and changes hence MC. Agree it’s a ratty name. As is the fact there’s now 2 different station names for what is essential one station interconnected.

I would expect the Geelong fast rail project to use the new tunnels under the Yarra river to provide a much shorter connection to Geelong. The current regional rail link through Wydham Vale and Tarniet would be electrified and form part of the western leg of the Suburban Rail Loop. No, but the High Capacity Metro Trains which are already in service and will be the only trains in this new tunnel in the future will be using automatic stopping at platforms to align with the platform screen doors.
      In the future the entire line could probably be replaced with automated trains but that's a long way off given this tunnel connects the Pakenham & Cranbourne lines (which will be extended to Clyde eventually) and go all the way out to Sunbury, it'd be close to 35 other stations needing to be upgraded for automatic operations in the future.

      Glad you enjoyed it! Having come from London, which was so much bigger than any other UK city, I think its wonderful to have the largest 2 cities being around the same size. Sydney will struggle to get bigger in the longer term due to the surrounding national parks and coastlines.

    The state Library station platforms look a lot like many on the Moscow metro and other Ex-soviet metros

      That's interesting! Not been to any of those metros, but its an interesting comparison

    Bigger isn't always better Paul. Over crowded cities are not the best cities.

      Yes I'm inclined to agree. Once of the reasons I left London was because it had become so busy and populated, and Sydney is starting to get like that too. However, public transport is much more successful in densely populated cities, and for me, it means that I don't need to own a car (which I do like!).
