"So, Tim and I have been working on an EP to follow up The Unnatural World. It's actually been moving forward more quickly than expected, and a few months ago we looked over at each other and realized most of it's already done - a few years ahead of schedule.
What's left is mostly vocals at this point, and so it's come down to me getting the lyrics and so on in place. Which is challenging, honestly; I'm used to writing a little bit every day, jotting down notes and bits of text and then collecting those all into something that resembles a cohesive whole. This time around, those moments of creativity are largely swallowed up - by my business, by my kid, by my wife, by worry, etc.
It's doable, but I need to find a new way to do it, to "be" that guy that can write things down and not have them be horrible (the reality of creative work is typically that most of what you write, especially if you don't write a lot, is garbage...and you need to get past that stuff, often through sheer force of will and volume, to find anything good - at least, that's how it's always been for me).
Anyway, this was the first song I found time to work on, and probably the most obvious 'HANL-ish' of all the songs on this record, which is turning out to be a little weird, a little subdued, a little quiet.
This song is not that. It is not that at all. It also sits pretty squarely in the center of the lyrical theme that's emerging - one that deals primarily with the flip side of happiness, which is the dawning awareness that what gives you joy is not owed to you, and could be taken away at any time.
Anyway, here's the song. It's very rough, and there are bits in here that will probably be changed or taken out or dialed up or down. But, cheers. Let us know what you think.
I also don't know what to call it. The joke name is 'Cropsely 2: Season of the Witch.'"
