Right? I love mom vlogs and stuff like that, and I think it's sweet if they show their kids once in a while, playing, doing their things. BUT, when the WHOLE channel it's about their kids, living their everyday life...it's just so weird. Can you imagine? Waking up, your mom filming you having breakfast, going to school, brushing your teeth. A lot of these videos also have parents giving their kids "the talk", or explaining personal things, documenting when kids are upset. It feels SO disconnected. Your kid is crying, upset? just film it instead of asking what's wrong!! I'm-.

I grew up with my family taking little to no photos of me/us siblings, only very, very sparingly. I used to think of it as somehow "wrong" I guess, particularly compared to the accounts of friends. But I dont think there was any neglect in it though, much as it may sound. I'm much happier had that be the way in my family's past than the other end of the spectrum. If I were a young teen now, I would not want even any of my photos on my parents' facebooks, even if their account privacy settings were up to speed to keep randos at bay.

Once there girls get older they immediately start talking about them going through puberty which I understand can be very helpful to other girls watching, but as 14 year old I would never in a million years want to go shopping for period supplies and have my mom film it for millions of people to see and then go to school the next day. As a Developmental Psychologist, thank you so much for bringing awareness to this issue. Most people don’t realize this but there will be studies about the negative effects of daily vlogging children who don’t know any better and who can’t give consent. Asking a 5 year old child if he/she wants to be on camera is useless. A child can’t give informed consent, period! We need specific laws for this. Nothing will change until it is regulated. Easy money will always speak louder: just point the camera at the cute kid and clickbait the shit out of the kid getting hurt, having a bad grade, getting sick, fighting with a friend or having a crush. That way, mommy and daddy can quit their jobs and do this every single day. Cut to some of the kids feeling so obviously awkward and pressured by the parents to be on camera and others constantly trying to outshine their siblings and amping up the drama because the parents encourage it and reward it. More than copyright regulations, TH-cam needs to do something about this. Why are we waiting 10 or 15 years to see the obvious negative effects of exploiting a child’s privacy, family structure, childhood and sense of self?
Or putting them in danger, giving predators endless footage and their location every day?
    Thank you, Tiffany!

I totally agree. And I would take the risk to say that parents who cannot realize how harmful this is to their children (or don't want to see it) make probably other serious mistakes in parenting. At least, not the children's interests are at first place, in general.

    • @Panbaneesha
      @Panbaneesha 5 ปีที่แล้ว +64

Agreed. I'm not a psychologist, but I just cannot believe that a child can develop a healthy mental state when growing up with a camera in their face. Even small children can act, and feeling the pressure to do so on a daily basis in my opinion compeletly prevents a child from experiencing the world in an authentic way. The parents don't even have to tell them to do so, as far as I know children often feel the need to behave as they think the parents want them to. And they may even think it's fun, but it's manipulating them away from their true feelings, and that's never a good thing.

We have so many former child actors/celebrities who talk about how profoundly it affected their lives, and I'm sure we'll see the same thing happen with many of these family vlogger children. No matter how innocent and wholesome a family's intentions are, no matter how much the children might enjoy these lifestyles even, it's undeniable that being exposed to an audience of hundreds of thousands or even millions would have a significant impact on anyone's life, let alone a small child. It's a lot.

And of course sadly all types of abuse can happen to different kids in all types of different situations, I'm not trying to imply that all exposure to lifestyles and experiences like this are tantamount to, or directly comparable with, specific forms of abuse, but I do believe that we have a responsibility to question the way these things may impact children in general, and the harm and exploitation that is possible whether on the extreme end of the spectrum or not.

I feel like this is classic narcissism. Narcissistic parents live vicariously through their kids, and see their kids as an extension of themselves not as their own individual people- hence why they feel the right to violate their privacy and put their lives on TH-cam and Instagram when the kids are not able to consent to that. I am a mother of five, and I even sometimes go back and forth about what I post on my own personal Facebook about them, which is only accessible to my family and friends. Sometimes stuff that may seem cute to me now I realize later when my kids are able to understand may not appreciate being put online. I literally can’t imagine putting their entire lives online against their wills, and making money for myself off of it, not to mention the fact that lots of family vloggers now do scripted stuff, so the kids are literally acting and working for free with nobody checking up on labour laws. I don’t think most of these family vloggers have bad intentions and that’s why there needs to be labour laws that apply to TH-cam kids.

There is some days I want to hug, and some days I don't. I really don't get that, it's still our choice if we want to give affection. FAMILY OR NOT! Like yesterday, I was literally trying to get to the oven to take out food, and I was forced so tightly into a hug, that I was trying to resist it and when I didn't seem affected positively by it, they just get mad. Like I didn't want to get hugged at the TIME, I was trying to do something else! Like WHYY? It does not mean I am being disrespectful or mean to you, I was just doing something else, and focusing on that! i immediately thought of the real christopher robin while watching this. he loved the attention he was getting until he got teased in boarding school and grew to hate the books about him. he didn’t like his dad and even thought that his dad created a “dream son” though the books. in fact, he said his father "had got where he was by climbing on my infant shoulders, that he had filched from me my good name and had left me with nothing but the empty fame of being his son."
it’s not the same as this, but it’s an interesting one. i also think of the ashley twins, who were stars from such a young age. it’s an interesting thing to think about. i hope the best for these kids.

In addition there was the kid who played anakin in the Phantom Menace who got bullied incessantly after that role. We should be careful and protect our children from fame. My mom scrapbooked the memories of my childhood but the thing is, they were never shown to the masses, only to close friends and family. It was a way to preserve those memories but protect us from the spotlight. And photos were always taken of momentous occasions and not of everyday life. Unless we did a cool project for school or something but there were never pictures of us crying or being sent to our rooms or anything that may have been considered questionable. Even when pictures started to be uploaded to Facebook, they were still only of events our family thought were important to remember. Even then, the images were never publicized. Our safety was always at the forefront of my parents’ minds

If you can make money off of it to support your family, why not just focus on that? Most bigger channels are making more money from ad revenue then they are in their “traditional” day job anyways. 🤷🏼‍♀️

the worst part about it is that you never know who watches these videos. the fact that ALL FAMILY CHANNELS upload THERE CHILD'S BIRTH VIDEO onto TH-cam for "EVERYONE TO SEE" is a legitimate disgrace. I surely know why Family channels do that because uploading birth videos of your child can get the most viewing and money off TH-cam. That's all they care about. When will family channels start thinking over there child's safety? As they get older they will realize that a child itself was being harassed by strangers on the comments, watched by millions of people, birth video seen by millions of people, A kids whole live was put out there for the world to see.

I would argue that these kids aren't even really free to say that they don't want to be filmed, because when you're a kid you see your parents as perfect people who can do no wrong. You trust them completely, and you don't want to disappoint them. The DaddyOFive clip where they ask their kids "Do you think we've been abusing you?" is a perfect example of this, because the kids heavily rely (or relied) on their parents to provide for them and they still love and trust their parents, so they aren't really in a position where they can say "Yes, you're abusive." Not to mention, they would be risking even worse abuse if they spoke up, especially if they had the guts to say it on camera. Unfortunately in those situations, it's really up to the viewers and TH-cam to step in and put an end to it.

As a now 21 year old who was abused physically until 12 and mentally until I moved out a year ago, we don’t keep silent out of love. I saw my mother as a monster the moment I realized that no other child was treated this way. And when I realized out of the 6 kids that she had, only 2 of us were being abused and neglected. I was 9 years old. We keep quiet out of fear that when we say ‘I hate my mom’, we’ll get the same disgusted response as always: ‘How can you say that about your mother? You know that you owe your life to her?’ Maybe kids younger than 9 really do still love their abusive parent because of what you said. I just wish I had kept that naivety. Knowing that they don’t love you and don’t give a shit about how you turn out is worse than deluding yourself into thinking that they still have an ounce of love or mercy in their dead hearts.

    • @MissInformed10
      @MissInformed10 5 ปีที่แล้ว +58

@@addiesrambles7871 I'm really sorry you went through that, no child deserves to abused or neglected. That's another layer of complexity that I didn't even think about, but you're totally right. If a kid says that they hate their mom, the automatic reaction is to think that the kid is ungrateful and dramatic. So if a kid on TH-cam says it, that disgusted response would be multiplied dramatically, especially if the parents (who are the ones editing the videos usually) choose to only show the good, happy moments. So even if they are brave enough to talk about what really happened off camera, they run the risk of being gaslighted by thousands, or even millions of people.

I read about that woman a few months ago. She openly admitted that she had no idea that people died during 9/11 and said she was unaware "that people were actually in the buildings". Her excuse was that she was in college and played two sports. I was four years old (and granted I lived across the river from the towers), but even I knew what happened - I have friends who lost both parents, know plenty of people who lost siblings, friends, and of course there are thousands of people who have been affected by 9/11 related cancers. Her entire post was about her and her incredible ignorance, so that just goes to show you what kind of person she is. 3000 people died, the markets closed, travel ceased worldwide. I mean, how ignorant could she have been; there is no excuse. There is an article on DailyMail about her (because of course she turned off the comments on her original post when people began to point out how incredibly offensive it is to treat such a major tragedy like that). I know this is unrelated to this video (which is incredible btw), but I had to say something because she seems like such a repugnant person to me.

Even then I got the magnitude of it all, a father of a kid in my grade survived the attacks but shortly died after due to injuries sustained. Maybe it’s because we can relate to it on such a personal level, but I’ll never understand people like her who just never will get it. I’d never take any advice from a person who cannot comprehend the magnitude of a national (international too) tragedy that still affects us all to this day.

What scares me about the privacy issues surrounding family vlogging is how *much* of their children's lives are public record. Their daily schedule, where they like to play, their interests, who they spend time with, so much information that a predator with little work, can know the exact location of these kids. I think about the number of strangers, who if they *really* wanted to, could do a minimal amount of research and kidnap these children. Sure, their parents may not overtly say which school they go to or mention their neighborhood title, but maybe they mention which city they live by or the name of a town nearby. These predators can know which parks these parents frequent, which Starbucks they go to every day, can memorize their entire daily routine, to eventually find the perfect time to snatch their child up. THAT scares the shit out of me.

    • @brandi5126
      @brandi5126 5 ปีที่แล้ว +98

Exactly. Like if the predator already lives in that area or been to that area they will recognize the places. Not to mention if the parents are not tech savvy, they might have their Geo tags in pictures and IP address just out in the open for any body to see. Very scary stuff to think about, but you have to as a parent to protect you children. That's job number 1. And I really worry for these children.

Vanice Icarus Yup. The channel is called Bratayley. They didn’t record their kids sobbing or anything but they recorded their kids tearing up about it, writing a letter “for him to read up in heaven”, going to a doctor appointment to check to see if they have the same heart condition that killed their brother, one of the girls saying she hadn’t eaten the entire day (a couple weeks after the death, she probably wasn’t eating because of immense grief), going through their brother’s things in his room, and going back to daily vlogging less than a month after his death.
You can see the grief in the girls’ eyes. The first few months after their brother’s death, the girls seemed to tear up easily, they were really quiet, and they rarely smiled or laughed. They were clearly not ready to continue vlogging.
They also uploaded the very last vlog with Caleb (the brother) in it and the title in the beginning said “the day before Caleb died”.
Just a very weird situation. I try not to judge them too much because everybody grieves in different ways but vlogging just a week or two after Caleb’s death seemed too soon.
Oh, and they live-streamed his memorial service, with the family and friends’ tearful speeches and everything. Thankfully they left out the kids’ speeches.

She started getting views and her mum took control and pressured her more and more with the videos and going on talk shows. All she talked about was money and numbers and how Venus could support them. Turns out she was also physically and emotionally abusive and Venus managed to get away when she was 18 or so. She's now in her early 20's and lives in Japan (she's Swiss) and she's very messed up. -Bratayley upload their sons memorial (he was barely 13 when he died btw)
-Britneyandbaby got so much hate, her relationship with the muscular dystrophy foundation was almost destroyed (her son also has a fatal illness). If that happened, the poor guy might not get help from them in the future, and it’s necessary for MD.

I asked why she wanted one, and she responded with "you get money and get famous just for showing what you do and where you go to school and stuff". Family vloggers are not understanding the effects they cause to the younger generation as a whole. My children are my ultimate priority, I refuse to exploit them and it's my job to protect them. That would be terrifying to me. It would make me feel so exposed and vulnerable that someone I just met can so easily know so much about me. When I was a kid (I'm 36, for reference), my dad had a camcorder, and took copious amounts of home video. Among this footage were situations that I personally find quite embarrassing, but my immediate family has been amusedly quoting back to me for decades. Because it's my family, I take it in stride; the evidence is limited to VHS cassettes and the digital transfers my dad made to his personal hard drive. In all honesty, the footage is pretty damn meme-able. When my now-wife saw them, she pretty much immediately added them to her lexicon of jokey terms of endearment for me. Thankfully, because I am a product of the 80s, I am able to rest safe in the knowledge that this embarrassing content will likely remain forever locked away on old media. For the children of these family vloggers, however, there will be no such assurance. I share your concern as to how this will impact them in the long term.

I freaked out when I watched the Ace Family. The little girl (Elle) seems to be very reluctant to make videos 🤐🤐🤐 Like who would like her dad to record and share when she goes to the dentist or meet her sister for the first time???? They are going to steal her childhood. I feel like they manipulate her emotions. One day Elle and the mom were going to surprise, the dad taking him to a basketball game. Elle got super hyped. Right before leaving, they told her: "why are you so excited? You are not going. You are staying with Nanny". She is also sexualized. "Reading my daughter's DMs". He actually said at the beginning that he doesnt want boys around, that she wont have FB, Twitter, Instagram (which she already has... but for his profit), that he doesn't want her daughter to be tagged as a WCW. Scary shit. He sexualizes her by pretending there is some kind of implicit DMs (which should actually worry him). But he was playing with that. "Someone asks how much She charges for a hmmm hmmm?" Did you just say that about your daughter????👊👊👊 She is 2... She shouldn't have to worry about boys or the way she looks. She is still a baby but it sure will become worse as she grows old. She is going to act her life 😓 instead of living it. How is she going to be a balanced adult?

What sickened me however was that the parents started filming so soon afterwards - exposing their ten and six year old daughters' grief to the world. The ten year old (Annie LeBlanc - now a famous teenage star) was carrying around her baby security blanket as a coping mechanism because naturally she was extremely upset, unsafe traumatised. And people were giving this little girl grief in the comment section about it (apparently a child who has just lost her brother shouldn't be finding comfort in something that provides her with security). How could a parent in their right mind expose their child's grief like that? It's so wrong! That was the moment when I changed my mind about their channel and all of the family vloggers. Really made me see them in a different light. I cannot look at those parents' faces anymore without feeling a sense of anger for what they did to their girls during that time when they should have been shielded away.

i also feels like family channels are big on consumerism. a lot of it is based on 'surprises' (holidays, random presents) big present openings come christmas/birthdays, hauls, no budget videos etc. most of the kids seem grateful and nice, but what if the money dried up and they had to go back to living on an average budget/wage? some of them seem so used to going away or on 'adventures' all the time, that they don't really have a chance to just chill and do something more low-key, like reading or art or something, because it makes for 'boring' content i guess.

They used to be normal people we could relate to and then they began buying expensive clothes, cars, houses, everyday the kids got new toys, etc. Their content began revolving around material things. And their lives seem perfect because they have all of these things, so you begin to compare. And younger viewers might not understand this so they feel bad that they don't have all the latest gadgets or clothes.

I remember trying to hide that I had gotten my menstrual flow from my closest friends and other people close to me for a long type so imagine this kid now having millions of strangers knowing personal things about her life. Sure talk about these things because they are normal but give the child some sort of privacy with certain things especially as they grow older.

I remember telling my daughter who was ten at the time that they may never come back to TH-cam so she should be prepared for that. And then they were back about a week later, or less. Although I have to say it may have been pressure from Disney Maker studios who they were signed with at the time, since I believe they had their employees doing all the editing, and I remember how devastated the family seemed on camera (obviously). Now they’ve totally exploited Annie, forcing her to play teen idol and pop star and turning her into a spoilt brat, and they bought a huge house in LA with the money she made. And they just push Haley to the side and only address her when it’s convenient for them. They used to be a really wholesome family that I was totally okay with my young daughter watching, and now they’re just vile and unpleasant. Those beautiful girls are going to grow up so emotionally damaged and it makes me so sad.

This is a very well made video and the way you explain is amazing! I watched your part 1 first and I subscribed immediately.
This is very saddening, Billy Ray Cyrus came out and said that Hannah Montana ruined his family and even said he would take it all back now. The pressure that Miley Cyrus, who was older than these children when she rose to fame (still too young of course), I remember she had SO MUCH pressure on her at all times. Miley/Nick were such a huge topic during the Disney days. I cannot even phantom how this must be for these kids. Once they start getting older and reading comments, having people making hate comments on them specifically, etc. how will that affect them?
If adult celebrities sometimes crack under the pressure and it's too much for them--imagine these kids who all they know is working every day from the moment they wake up to the moment they sleep.
I'd feel so damn uncomfortable being at a family event and having a family member always vlogging it for their channel and making their kids put on an act. Many of these family vloggers have been exposed for over exaggerating events for views. I can only hope their kids grow up to be the opposite of most of them.
I am not saying that these parents are bad people, I'm sure they do care and love their kids. I agree that it's a personal choice to show or feature your kids in videos or photos, however, to make your children the MAIN focus...? I don't know... I'd put my child's safety above all. I've also thought about how many pedos are watching these videos, and it's a horrible topic but it can't be ignored.

my main problem with it is that the children are unable to consent to having themselves shared online, because, like you said, they can't comprehend how many people are watching. and once they are old enough to comprehend and to consent fully, it's too late, and their identity is already out there. i can't imagine how i'd feel as an adult knowing that my childhood was commodified for others to watch, unable to be taken back. what about when these children start applying for jobs, and prospective employers can see their entire life history, videos of them aged 5 in the bath, etc.? i'll be very interested to see how many of these children are resentful as they get older, and if any of them sue their parents for the profits earned in the videos.

The biggest issue of all is one of Informed Consent.
The Parents made the informed decision to make their life Public, to the whole world.
    However, their children have not.
While a woman is pregnant, what she chooses to do with her body is her informed choice.
As soon as that child is born, they have a separate identity. And thus a right to protect that identity.
Any children of consenting volger parents will not be able to give a full understood & informed consent to a 'Truman Show' existence until well into adulthood.
The informed consent of all parties needs to be given, before being turned into "entertainment".

BeccasLife that’s a great point for photo/video memories in general. It can’t depict your exact experience because it’s more external and factual, and usually has too many details or isn’t full. And eventually you start remembering only the moments captured because they’re the ones your mind replays when you’re scrolling through pics on your phone. Or the memory gets distorted - you were sad but you quickly forget it because you’re smiling on the pic.
I think of photos and videos as of art/way of self-expression, not as of depiction of your life. For the later, diaries (text format) or voice memos come the closest.

I once saw tweets a while back where someone informed the dad Jonathan that there were pics of his daughter Emilia on inappropriate websites and he was super dismissive of it. This was easily 2+ years ago and they’re still vlogging daily, featuring their 4 children heavily, etc. I’ve also seen a clip of his son Eduardo trying to push the camera away, giving up, and dropping to the ground in tears, Jonathan continued to film it. So sad. And that’s not even everything, there are SO many other problematic things they have done!!!! They are a prime example of featuring their kids and not caring about the long term effects.

Melissa Flowers they’re the number one family that comes to mind when I was watching this video! I can’t stand them!

legit! I can't imagine being Emilia, having my entire 6 years of life so far being flogged everyday. I think it's awful.

They are awful and completely delusional and materialistic - they really do annoy me!

Same thing happened to Daily Bumps and Ellie and Jared. With E&J their kids videos were put on pedo youtube channels and they were told multiple times and chose to delete the comments and block the well meaning fans. DB was similar when Ollie was younger and they showed bathtime on every vlog which were found cliped from the vlog and uploaded under various channels full of semi nude children. It also happens to the moms.. lots of websites out there linking their pregnancy videos for men with fetishes. As long as they get that paycheck...

Totally agree with everything you said. I actually used to keep up with a couple of daily family vloggers but then started to realise how weird it is. I bet a lot of those kids are gonna grow up with issues

This is something I have been arguing about for years. it's amazing how precient The Truman show was in predicting how people would sacrifice their child's privacy for fame and money.

🙋‍♀️ someone told me about this video mentioning me, very well done. I hope your video gets a lot of exposure. I think it’s important to mention that I was a TINY channel and not making money for my videos, but once learning what I did, it became obvious that channels with managers / or larger channels intentionally chose those thumbnails and tags. When I found the analytics, it was the first I’d ever seen it. I had no idea it existed or that I could find my traffic sources or things like that, where professional channels use their analytics to target and grow purposefully. I was (am) a nobody who stumbled into this very very dark reality on TH-cam.

The Life of a Homemaker - I'm sorry, but could you explain a bit more please. I knows it's my fault, but I am not following - and I am very interested in what you are saying! God Bless 💕
