- From 1996, Accu-Stats caught "The MIZ" playing a highly under-rated Toby SWEET in the hey day of the Pro Billiards Tour of the '90's... Great play and great commentary from "The Voice of Accu-Stats" Billy Incardona and "The Professor" Grady Mathews!

I love so much to watch old school pool ...and it doesn't get any better with Grady and Billy giving lessons and arguing so friendly at the same time ..Love it
Thank you Mr Fleming for these videos! So fun to watch especially stuff from the 70s & 80s when billiards was really booming!!
Very welcome
@@AccuStats I really hope you post the match between CJ Riley and..Mizerak..or was it Hall ?? Sands in -93 i think. AMAZING MATCH ! CJ shot like 985 or something. His first appearence on the tour. Saw it couple years ago, but never found it again ?? PLEASE PLEASE ME !
The touching atmosphere has really been captured in this video for posterity. Invaluable tape, in my opinion.
I was not familiar with Toby Sweet, and I'm glad I was able to see this part of pocket billiard history.
Mizerak is something else altogether. To beat a dead horse, my favorite stroke in the history of the game.
How cool watching these old pros play
Forgot just how good Toby played! Steve, as always, played great! Love hearing Grady's voice - sure miss him. And Cardone? Loved listening to him...thanks, Pat, for another great match!
I always tell people that you played in my room in Passaic, NJ. Congrats on your HoF induction. And yea, what a memorable match.
@@AccuStats Fleming's Backstage Billiards - loved your room! Was one of the coolest rooms I ever saw! It was the first time I was exposed to the action side of the pool world! I was hooked! Remember when I beat Russell in your weekly tournament? LOL He was a hot sucker...:) Thanks, Pat - miss you...stay safe, my friend. :)
you gotta love the old school pool. so simple and straight forward
" I know smoking is not good for you,but it's a little bit better than marriage and that's all I have to say about that" Grady Matthews
Dustin Wilkins a highlight of the match for sure!
I didn't expect that either...great line!!
Grady had so many great lines!!
@@AccuStats boy thats for sure!! grady was an original for sure--
@@donsmith3857much better than Danny Deliberto who loves to showcase that old school toxic masculinity
Thank you Accu-stats
I watched the whole match and loved every second of it. Grady, Billy, and Steve, such enjoyable characters. RIP Steve and Grady
Man, love to watch Toby Sweet! Had an opportunity to see him play in S.C. and he was in stroke 💪
far & away the best commentary team there has ever been, makes an already great match all the better- bravo
I was fortunate enough to have spent some time in Toby Sweet's pool room in NY, back in the early 80's, when I was a traveling salesman. Being a pool junkie, I would jump at the chance to get to watch his practice routine that he would go through starting each day. His practice routine consisted of breaking a straight pool rack and then running 100 balls without missing before quitting. And that was his routine. Although I was only around for about one month to observe his warm up routine, I never saw him miss a ball, not once. I think his straight pool game was as good or better than anyone's at that time. I have never seen anyone control whitey better than him, his cue ball control was flawless. I don't ever remember seeing him play nine ball, although I'm sure he must have to have been a gambler. But I always thought his best game was straight pool. I never played Toby, he was way out of my league, but I played his young protégé, whose name I've since forgotten. He played extremely well, too, (and to whom I donated a few dollars on occasion, which I just considered a cheap lesson). It's a very fond memory I have of meeting, not only some really nice people, and to have been able to hang around with, but Toby is the best player I ever personally knew; and I've known quite a few very good ones in my 60 years around the game, both as a player, and as a table technician and billiard supply store owner.
Must of been a great experience
@@calebh336 It certainly was. And, as evidenced by my above statements, a memorable one. Toby's straight pool game was nearly flawless. He may not be as well known as some of the other great players, but that's due to the fact that he was a hustler in his day and he intentionally kept his prowess on the down low, but he ranks up there among the very best; at least in my book he does.
I knew Toby when he lived down here in south Florida. I went to this match even . He wanted me to date his daughter ( Holly ) bc he didn't like the guy she was seeing at the time lol. Unfortunately for me it never happened but she was very beautiful. He taught me a lot about the game . He was a great player and a great person imo.
@@davidmanlio444 Thanks for the post with that information. Great to hear good things about Toby and his daughter. Cheers!
Doug - Are you talking about the place on Rt 59 just past the Nanuet mall? I bought my McDermott from Toby there
ooooooooh Toby Sweet, wow, haven't heard that name in a while. Great player, great $$$ player. I'll be watching this.
what a great stroke that toby had! You cant get this level of commentary anymore. Good stuff!
RIP The Miz and Grady, 2 legends of the game, not nearly mentioned enough, Miz won 3 or 4 Us Open tournaments, several world titles, Toby always gave action 25 years ago or longer
I play at tobys billiards in hollywood florida and this is a great video to watch, very inspired by toby and i wish i got to see the man in person
Amazing! Can't wait to see this match. I never got to see Toby play in his heyday but I heard stories about his cueball and toughness as a money player in south Florida. Looking forward to it!
He was a great player in the 70's and 80's and into the 90's. I knew him when he lived down here in south Florida. He was awesome.
The commentary on these seem so much better than a lot of the current matches.
It's just great people. Like the Archer/Luat 9 ball $30k match. They had Buddy Hall & Jim Rempe. Grady Matthews is what makes this commentary really good. Billy was ok because of Grady. @17:30 seems Buddy Hall was a commentator with other players during these matches too.
*THERE IS NO COMPARISON OF COMMENTATORS USED AT THIS ERA TO PEOPLE USED NOW. LETS JUST CALL THEM PEOPLE. COMMENTATORS BACK THEN TALKED POOL FROM START TO FINISH, IF IT WAS ONE POCKET THEY DISCUSSED STRATEGY AS IF THEY WERE PLAYING. TODAYS PEOPLE WILL BASH EARL STRICKLAND, LIKE TIMOTHY, MAKE FUN OF A BACK BRACE OR SUCH. JUST PUT, THEY ARE NOT PROFESSIONAL*
Too bold and capped to read. It's like waking up in darkness and seeing the sun. He's only had a YT account for 2 years... Hope he learns grammar.
Thanks so much mr. Fleming , great, great video
You are very welcome
Excellent match, more more more
I got to see and even take a few lessons from Wade Crane in the early 90's at Comer's in Knoxville, TN. To this day he's the best player I've ever witnessed live. When he had his game right he seemed unbeatable. RIP Wade "Billy Johnson" Crane.

HOW I WISH I COULD GO BACK TO CERTAIN MOMENTS ... " POPS " AND " RON " ... THANK YOU AND I MISS BOTH OF YOU !! *
I can’t imagine what a monster Toby Sweet must have been in his prime. At 53 here he was amazing.
Phenomenal cue ball control! I was very impressed with his game.
Lot of people don’t know Toby late 60s 70s was probably his prime bet high and ran out for days ask the old timers about him 711 was his home , 9ball was his game
grady mathews was the best! i love the persona they gave him in the color of money, vs who he really was. he must have had a ton of fun filming those scenes. RIP.
For sure! Guys like Billy, Danny D, Freddy, "The Beard", Bentivegna, Grady, Johnnie Ervolino and Ronnie Allen can never be replaced. They had all the wisdom of pool combined!
I would love to find the old, LEGENDS OF ONE POCKET matches from 89' 90-95 or six. One was in Baton Rouge, one was in North Carolina and there was one in South Philly in 90' or 91". I was at all of them with my dad, Freddy "The Beard" Bentivegna. It was so awesome meeting all those Legends! All the free commentating work my dad did for Accu-Stats, I figure you guys owe me. lol
I asked Tobys daughter, Holli, to post any old footage she has.
Toby was one of the best unknown players ever. The great players all knew who he was. He layed almost erfect osition and when he did get a harder shot, he made them look easy. Rumor has it ,he is still wearing elephant bell bottom pants
I love the rivalry between Grady and Bill
Thanks accustoms great stuff love pool
I love hearing the announcers talk. It's like they stop chatting just enough to talk about the match and then back to the banter.
Toby often Hangs out at Diamond Jims Billards in Nanuet when hes in Ny. B4 the pandemic anyway. Havnt seen him in a few months though. Great guy!
The matches from the 90's are fantastic! I was wondering if we could see the Shannon Daulton vs Earl Strickland match from The Sands? I can't put my finger on the year though.
1995

There's a couple videos , but not much . It was a shame what happened to him. He was a great player.
2022 and they still have the same tables and neon signs hanging around the building.. Except their ceiling is leaking everytime it rains.. Randomly came across this video but cool to know that i play on the same tables they played on.
INTERESTING STORY. PLEASE ELABORATE. WHAT BUILDING AND NEON SIGNS...THANKS
shoutout to Pat Fleming @17:21 ! love all your uploads
Toby was the owner of holy billiards in Nanuet back in the days we spent a lot of nights playing there I learned a lot from him
I knew him in the late 80's and 90's when he lived down here in south Florida. He also opened up a room down here but left it to move back to NY .
First time watching and hearing about Toby sweets. He can play!👍
Yeah!
He was a great player but a better gambler than tournament player . This is from the late 90's when he played a little of the senior tour. He was an amazing player in the 70's and 80's.
Grady damn man he talks a good game he knows everything he must be the best ever to hear him say it he's got an answer for everything.
He did win this tournament and a bunch of one pocket titles
The Miz had the best combination of power and beauty in his stroke that I've ever seen.
I absolutely agree Jim!
His stick moves so precisely, I'm definitely taking notes.
that guy Toby Sweet went to Chelsea Billiards one night lookin for action . Apparently no one wanted any part of him. You can now see why.
I should have said: Toby was a rare character with a lot of style and flair. Always action when he was around. And yeah: we all "doggit" from time to time.
True legends here
It's sad to see how Mizerak let himself go. He suffered a stroke in 2001 (~5 years after this event) and died in 2006 from "complications during gall bladder surgery" according to google. He was ONLY 61. Take better care of yourselves people! You only get one shot so make it count for as long as you can!
I understand that he was about 400 lbs. by that time too.
It really is a shame. By all accounts a nice guy, and what a smooth stroke.
Toby's game is Sweet !!!
Nice. Any more of these?
Yes, soon
The shot from Mizerak in game 12 on the 6 was amazing.
They are both shooting so clean and smooth they make it look easy.
Never seen Toby play but damn , great player ! Anyone know what cue.he's playing with here ? Cause i had a Tad in late 80,s early 90s that looked exactly that .
* I honestly don't know what type of cue Mr. Sweet is playing with in this video - Yet I was thinking also about all these legendary players in attendance - Including Grady & Bill and there cues - Without seeing any of there cues - I would love to own all of them - You know there has to be Balabushka's - Szamboti's - Tads Ect ... I wish there was a picture of all the legends playing in this tournament - Including commentating - Standing beside a pool table with there cues proudly displayed on that soft money green felt - That is one thing I would love to know about all these world class / Hall of fame players - Exactly what cue / Cues they played with - Along with a excellent picture with detailed specifications *
@@_I_KNOW_HOW_THE_FLOWERS_FELT_ I agree , I have played at Romines great place to visit .
...when sweet played in Germany once (lost the tournament, but won the money later) in the 90s they said he played a Balabushka!
He is playing with a hoppie
@@kiekser hab ich damals live gesehen. in nürnberg, im "sharkeys" das finale gegen oliver ortmann
Too bad for the mistake on 7 ball at the end; there was tension and perhaps fatigue in that arm, already felt in two mistakes in previous tables. But Mizerak had been quite unlucky on more that one occasion. It is a beauty to see these legendary players who have made the history of the game (Mizerak the greatest player of the 70 years). It would be great to be able to games from the 70s and 80s too. Green table are better for aesthetics as well as the traditional color of the balls. Thanks!
Mr Toby, great player with awesome trousers!
Indeed!
"How to turn it to a profit, though, remains a mystery" LOL GREAT MATCH! ;-)
Wanna tell 'ya. The commentary of these two, back then was golden. I really like them talking about alternate paths, and the pluses and minuses of each choice. Five games in now, and forget any "for seniors", these guys are playing great here, negating any age qualifications. So far, one shot that wasn't given proper respect, by Miserak, on the rail first to the upper right corner, that he barely missed...and that's pretty much it. NICE! Nobody could have played that first table any better. An easy table, but perfectly played, just as I almost always DON'T.
"I've tried to help him out along the way...teach him what he needs to know" "Yes, you've helped me out a lot, financially"
Great ending, really didn't see that coming. THAT was a gift. When you get to a high enough amateur level, paying a pro 10 or twenty bucks for a game, or a short match, is a bargain, just for what you learn.
Man Toby Sweet is tough.
toby sweet totally reminds me of when i was at the top of my game, this inspires me too get back at it :)
Hey Pat and the folks at Accu-Stats - any chance you can post a video of Paul Thornley? I think you have one from a seniors event.

He's alive and well. He's also an accomplished artist.
I appreciate the response, thanks. This is the first time I have seen or heard of Toby Sweet. I like his play. He’s good. Thanks again, later
He was a great player . I knew him well when he lived down here in south Florida but he moved back to NY sometime in the late 90's early 2000's about the time I stopped playing. Never stayed in touch with him though and YES he only wore bell bottoms lol . He loved that style .
When l went to play at Boca Billiards from Stuart in 90s l never saw him without a hat. I wouldn't have recognised him.
Never played him except in a ring game.
This is just a little bit sad. The Miz, gone. Ervolino, gone. Butera, Gone. Grady, gone.

That was his style . He only wore bell bottoms EVERYWHERE lol.

Smooth game..
Awsome ❤
I really enjoyed watching this. IMO Toby played alot better but Steve was able to get the wins. I miss these old days...
You can cheat these pockets like crazy xD They're freaking huge
Toby was only 53 when this was played. He was born in 1943, pretty sure. These guys talking about him like he was an old cat is funny.
The Miz shots all look effortless.
The commentators said that during the players meeting, it was said that this event is an open draw event. What does open draw mean?
An Open Draw is where no players are seeded during the draw. It's a blind draw.
Looks difficult on those 6inch pockets!
Raise the bet, they will tighten up real quick ; )
I swear I seen Toby here in Jacksonville within the past 2 years.
I cant find much info about him online and to be honest I had never heard of him until watching this but damn, he was fun to watch. I wonder if he's still alive? They said he was 53 during this match so he would be in his late 80's by now. I bet he could've written one hell of a book....
Is Toby still alive?
Yes
Wait boston shorty was here? Holy fuk
20:54 😳🤭🤣😂🤣😂🤣
This was sponsored by Taco Bell.. as strange as it may sound pool needs sponsors that have deep pockets and nothing to do with pool to want to sponsor events
I just loved Grady, and miz…..this one makes me sad kinda
Yea Grady’s commentary was second to none
I find it hard to believe that this was in the 90s looks more like 80s I think the dates are wrong lol
Wow
7:37 cold blooded comment by Incardona... Maybe it's just me but a little inappropriate in my opinion considering who Toby was playing.
What he said was true and relevant, however. As long as that's the case, I don't think inappropriate.
Was Toby Sweet the inventor of Spandex or one of his opponents the inventor of Sports Cups??😂
How did you know?

Miz could have added so many years to his life with some dropped weight.
Sometimes that's why people choose to overeat.
I have a size 38 waist line, so I'm still kinda slim, no muffin top.
taco bell is taking the mexican pizza off the menu 😞
These pockets though. Early days of pool was just too easy..
Maybe but when someone runs 10 racks of 9 ball on ya see how easy it is to fire back. Those pockets begin to get smaller. Now days you dont see alot of offense running 6 or 7 racks in a row, tables are to tough. makes the game look boring from a fan perspective. I would rather watch people run the set out than play safe. Even though i love playing a great safety.
@@luciascashmere984 Dunno if you watched the recent world championships. People made 7,8,9 packs
There were plenty of tables with tight pockets then as well. The players then preferred tighter pockets as well. This was in a local pool room which as you should know, keep the pockets easier for the ball bangers that come in and keep the lights on.
Also most decent pool halls then had one or more "money tables" for the real players to gamble on that had tight pockets
I think the game is easier today. The balls are more reactive, cloth is lightning fast. You had to really have a stroke to play before the 90's. Now you can fart on a ball and send it three rails
Toby dogged it.
Yeah. The 7 in the hill match was a btain fart. Too bad. I know him well. Not sure what caused it. Prob the old , im out train of thought and we simply forget to aim cuz its too easy. Eeve all done it.
Look like Toby is playing with a hoppie.
I had a min cue, 20$ walmart...nice to finally put a face with name...
That was a dogfight... wow
Sorry It was holly billiards
What a joke... tiny tables, pockets are a foot big.
Stive plays too much
