As much as I love seeing & hearing Luke on WT, NRB and even UCP, this really feels like the kind of content Luke Owen was made for. Excellent work, Cutscene team!
@@MultiClassGeek yup "Lights, Camera, Game Over!: How video game movies get made" that's what this channel is based off thus far. All the episodes are summed up chapters from his book
I remember hearing about this cancelled movie back in December 2018(I think it was the same day or a day after the first poster of the Sonic movie was released) from an article published by Luke Owen himself detailing the history about this movie. And as a Sonic fan, I never heard of this movie until the article came out and was fascinated with what the movie was about and how it ultimately never happened. So honestly, it feels fitting that it all comes full circle with this video and learning a bit more on the cancelled movie.
Love the fact that Luke from wrestletalk is talking about my favorite video game character and how sega didn’t do a movie about him but Paramount did him justice
In multiple alternate timelines: Sonic Wonders of the World got greenlit and promoted Sonic R or Sonic Jam instead of Xtreme and did okay financially and critically but didn't boost Sonic's brand Or DreamWorks made a fully CG Wonders of the World to promot Sonic Adventure and now Sonic is in the same league as Shrek in animated franchises and the Sonic franchise does better in movies throughout the late 90s to early 2010s adapting different games as movie sequels mixed with the typical DreamWorks humor Or lastly, Wonders of the World was made alongside a completed Sonic X-treme actually being made and it actually did boost Sonic's popularity and the Saturn sold more consoles and it became the best and only good video game movie in the 90s. Also I'd still want Jim Carrey as Robotnik since he was in his prime around that time
@@Del_S Yes. This has shown up a lot in science fiction. I think there were even episodes of the Jetsons that did this. This is just the Nostradamus effect: statements that are vague enough to be called accurate predictions after the fact.
Honestly, it was probably a good thing to cancel the movie. With how bad other video game and toy movies were doing, it really would have burned people on video game movies and on Sonic. It also would have given Sonic fans one more thing to hate.
This was really cool, I enjoyed listening and learning from what Luke was speaking about, I had the pleasure of watching one of the Sonic movies that came out so far and they all were really good, and from how the last movie ended I am hoping it is another movie that has Shadow in it. I even have the newest Sonic game for my Nintendo switch (Sonic Frontiers) it’s really a great game to play, it mostly reminds me of some of the older Sonic games mentioned in this video but in HD.
please DO NOT stop making these videos. i have never even played sonic and yet this video made me interested in learning more about it. Luke does a fantastic job presenting everything. 👍👍👍👍👍
Right I’m gonna b that guy. In the adventure of sonic the hedgehog cartoon there was 4 episodes 37-40 about robotnik getting the chaos emeralds by going back in time. Those 4 episodes was put together as a single running episode straight to vhs. I would argue that’s a sonic film in the 90,s.
A shame this movie never happened. I mean, I don’t think it would have been great but it would surely have been better than other game adaptations at the time like Mario.
I was dreading and yet looking forward to this because I was mixing it up with Ken Penders's _awful_ concept for a Sonic movie. Don't think I ever knew X-Treme was a tie-in, or that Mars for the 32X was one of it's many iterations. I feel iffy about that info, but either way. Chef's kiss in general, and I agree with a lot of comments here, hoping there's more but I'm happy if it ends here. Because frankly, the closer we get to now The less we know about the production and the less there is to say, because there's less outright disasters. A special on all the Resident Evil movies starring Milla Jovovich would be doable, but boring in my eyes I could be wrong though, maybe there's more rotten meat behind the scenes of at least the first than I think Speaking of horror, Doom would be a good subject. But that's just a wish, again. This is enough
Truth be told, I have some very found memories of the "little kids" Sonic. Sonic Says is still one of my favorite things to quote, and that's good. Side note: The movie pitch sounds depressing... and expensive.
In South Africa we had a live kids show on Saturday mornings, you would call in and give instructions to someone playing Sonic and compete for high scores and prizes. I can still hear kids shouting “FORWARD FORWARD JUMP JUMP JUMP!!! awww no” 😂😂
I believe Sonic 16 (or at least the clip you used when referring to it) was not an early version of X-Treme, but rather a separate game, largely based on SatAM. IIRC it had sneaking mechanics, and the rings worked differently, more akin to their SatAM counterparts.
Both Both the movie and the game sounds so promising. Such a shame! Another fantastic video Luke, can’t wait for the next essay! the movie and the game sounded so promising. Such a shame! Another fantastic video Luke can’t wait for the next essay!
Bit late to this one (mainly because of the insane amount of NRB patreon content this past week) but this was great as always. Hoping for more CutScene in the future.
If anyone here wants to see a movie with a similar central plot, I suggest "Adventures in Dinosaur City"; instead of pulling characters out of a video game, three kids send _themselves_ *into* a cartoon...
Only advertised as a movie in the West, when in reality it was just a straight-to-video OVA series. Makes about as much sense as the 4-part Chaos Emerald saga from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, which ALSO was advertised as a movie when it came out on VHS.
There's a fantasic Documentary about Cannon Films, "Electric Boogaloo", it's a 2 hour sizzle reel of everything that was craply entertaining in the 80's. Golan and Globus were both certifiably insane.
My timeline goes, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Sonic Mania then Sonic Frontiers. Those are the Best Sonic Games. Oh and the Movies are Good.
It's really sad that Sonic Wonders of the World was cancelled, maybe it could have saved Sega from leaving the console market. It sounds like a great movie, or at least a lot closer to the original IP than others. Masters of the Univers, Super Mario Bros. 1993, Double Dragon, etc. they all are far from what the original content was about.
Super Mario Bros. movie killed most of the game adaptation movies until Resident Evil proved that while the movies could be meh quality but successful financially thats the issue
I absolutely loath adaptations that feel the need to have the source material crossover into the 'real world'. Really cheapens the source material. Feels like a writer being too ashamed to just treat the source material like its a real thing.

this movie treatment genuinely sounds like a ton of fun and also ouch that parental situation in it sounds very familiar lol
Brilliant. If those four are the only four we get, it will be a regular revisit. Absolutely lovely. Well done, Luke and the whole production team.

There really should've been a Sonic movie in 1996 starring Tommy Davidson as Sonic and Jeffrey Jones as a live-action Dr. Robotnik.
I Would have went with Jaleel White again

It’s so interesting learning the behind the scenes of Sega surrounding both the game and the movie. Thanks for the gorgeous visuals and research ❤️
I must be an oddity was born in 87 and one of my favorite movies from my childhood is Masters of the Universe
I appreciate your hard work and information finding and editing on these videos there really well put especially format and studio work

This move excerpt is so much 90s cheese
Wait... This unfilmed movie predicted people using AI to finish coursework? And Eggman/Robotnik was wanting to make the Metaverse?
AI doing your homework is hardly new.
