    15 years later, Steven's doorbell rings. It's Emily, holding her thesis - an exquisitely illustrated scientific key to the Theropoda - and a katana.

    At first, I was becoming a little upset at how far he was taking his critique of what was, after all, the drawings of a child. Then I realized that of course he needed to point out her mistakes; that's the only way she'll learn, and the whole reason she submitted her book to the show in the first place. And then I realized that him critiquing her work in such a thorough manner was actually him validating her work. He wasn't treating it as refrigerator art, to receive graciously as a gift and ignore the flaws; he was treating it as *art* to be critiqued. And I remembered how, as a kid, I always used to get a bit upset whenever I showed my art to adults and they had nothing but praise, and even if I specifically pointed out the flaws they just reassured me that it wasn't too bad and that they were sure I'd do better next time. Children are coddled, artists are critiqued.
    Also: Saurian ftw!

    As a paleoartist in training, I really, really loved this. The toy critiques have improved my art greatly when it comes to anatomy and details; nevertheless, I'd love to see more episodes like this. It's very sweet that you took the time for constructive criticism to help her approve positivel rather than negatively. Keep up the great work, Steven (and you, too, Miss Emily)!

  • @dvklaveren
    @dvklaveren 7 ปีที่แล้ว +265

    You know, I thought that maybe you were being too harsh at first. But then I realized; a lot of artists are coddled and also a lot of artists complain about being coddled for their art. That it's really hard for outsiders to just go ahead and tell them what's wrong with what they made.
    And, as a result, people don't like it when they fail or are corrected, rather than learn from it, perpetuating the idea that correcting someone is somehow demotivational. It's not. If anything, it ought to be motivational and if you're not ready to take criticism, even when you're young, you got to, like, learn, man. Yeah, even as a kid. Especially as a kid.
    I drew a lot when I was young, but I didn't push through with it, because I wasn't seeing significant improvement like I was seeing in other fields, because I believe (and I can't be sure, due to creative recollection) that I didn't receive in-depth criticism such as this.

    • @zachb8012
      @zachb8012 5 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      I feel like he did a great job respecting the style of her art and kept his criticisms related to the physiology of the animals. Seems to be exactly what she asked for so there's nothing harsh about it, really. That said this coloring book is one of the cutest things I've ever seen.

      Pretender I try to get people to be harsh towards my art because it makes me feel like I’m correct about my own art in that it’s poor but I know that it’s not awful but I still hate it (like most artists I know)

    • @koopakape
      @koopakape 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think it's a very complicated matter that varies person to person, actually, as well as where exactly they are in there journey and what they need at the time, it can be anywhere on the sliding scale between pure praise and motivation and straight edged pure criticism. Personally, i wanted to draw very badly from a very young age but struggled with extremely profound anxiety and self esteem issues that made it a long and hard journey in which much criticism at all caused me to give it up for another chunk of time, all the way until a ways into adulthood and progress on the still-ongoing process of tackling those issues. However in this case, there's no way the artist or her parents didn't know exactly what this entailed, and indeed it's just like all his other episodes, so she was obviously prepared.

      @@zachb8012 you're right, but also it should be recognized that this girl's drawings are excellent for a child.

      Yep. Artist here and indeed, even negative comments and reactions are better than none. I already know I'm a shit person, that made me try art in the first place, so yeah, critique is not a bad thing. Especially that there are modern pharmaceuticals now that can be used to handle it.

    On the note of fabulousness, an interesting point I read somewhere is that the idea that dinosaurs would necessarily be drab-colored seems to be mostly based on expectations based on modern large land animals. However, those tend to be either mammals with poor color vision (elephants, rhinos and so on), or ambush predators in need of camouflage like komodo dragons and crocodilians. It seems a good guess that dinosaurs would have good color vision since, well, they're not mammals, and both birds and reptiles do. Those birds and reptiles that don't prioritize camouflage also frequently have prominent display colors.
    One idea I find particularly fun is colorful sauropods. I have a hard time seeing how the bigger ones could usefully hide in any way, so they might as well be any color they like (and are able to evolve). The visual of a giant and colorful animal is just something really alien, and taking a guess it strikes me as about as likely as the more traditional restorations.

    my critique for the miscellaneous birds is definitely the different feather regions of the wings and tails. wings of any shape and size have distinct areas of different types of feathers, tail feathers to a lesser extent but theyre not just long feathers like depicted

    I think I have to disagree with your theory that tyrannosaurs had exposed teeth, even when the jaws are closed and that they had lips. They were terrestrial animals, and their teeth need to constantly be moist to prevent cavities. My hypothesis is that if the tooth extend past the mandible, then it is exposed, like the machairodontids, (saber toothed cats). Crocodilians, on the other hand, have their teeth exposed, because their semi-aquatic, they get the moisture for their teeth in their environment. But it's my opinion, I'm not judging you.

    • @kaiserwilhelmii4222
      @kaiserwilhelmii4222 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree with you,even if the dinasoures are related to crocodiles.the tyranosaurus and other carnivores they would need moisture in there teeth.the fossil evidence shows the teeth out side but with the flesh and scales or fethers the teeth wouldn't be exposed

    • @Ezullof
      @Ezullof 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It probably depends on the rate at which the teeth could grow. If the teeth were replaced very often, then the teeth could very well be exposed.

    • @Ilamarea
      @Ilamarea 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      So sabretooth cats also had giant lips over their gigantic teeth extending beyond their jaws?

    • @riseevil7131
      @riseevil7131 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Pakislav
      What Paul meant was, since smilodon's fangs were to long to be fully cover under lips, since those far exceeded the lower jaw. Therefore, the Smilodon was an exception to the rule of lips. The T. rex on the other hand, its upper teeth never went past the middle of the lower jaw, there's a high chance it was fully covered under lips. Kind of like Komodo Dragons, Cats and lots of carnivore terrestrial animals with their massive lips that only retract to expose the teeth for biting.

    as an artist myself i thought this was a really good critique! i feel like people are afraid to critique an artist's work because you don't want to come off as too harsh and potentially discourage the artist from drawing more, but i think you had just the right amount of friendly but still critical. you made a lot of changes, but still pointed out what emily did correctly. it was a really good idea to show your own early artwork. it can be kind of discouraging to look up to an artist who's artwork looks so much better than your own, but by seeing the artist's earlier work, it gives a sense of hope, like "my art looks similar to how his art looked back then, so that means one day my art might look as good as his does now!" i hope emily has kept drawing since this episode, she had a lot of talent and enthusiasm!

    Sharp claws on the feet should be fine, actually. Theropod footprints show imprints of sharp claws at the tips of the toes (whenever the claw marks are well preserved, anyway), and that's more or less the shape of the bone cores. But other than that, though.

    I actually really love this episode style! I work at a dinosaur park, and I know a lot of kids get into dinosaurs through paleoart, and some of their first introductions to that are through not-so-accurate coloring books. I actually found this series while doing research bc I have art training and my boss asked me to design printable coloring pages for kids at home, featuring our park's dinosaurs. I would LOVE to see more episodes like this where you draw over coloring books! (Also can please you do a YDAW for ceratosaurus and torvosaurus?)

    Thumbs up if you take mental 'snapshots' of the completed, accurate animal as it to lock it in your brain.

    I do generally like the idea to look at more than one depiction of a dinosaur if it is about a specific product or franchise. I'd really appreciate something like an overall YDAW for Jurassic Park or ARK: Survival Evolved.

    I want to see a fallow up. Or the artist and our boy work together. I think it's good you when't into that much detail. I sure wish more people in my life did that with my art. Its really helps to improve you in being better as a artist.

    Grass seems like a very good strategy for a plant, what would have filled that niche at the time? I have a hard time believing that it was just empty for millions of years...

    • @foop2954
      @foop2954 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Soil and gravel would be on the ground, and grass is a new niche, for a widespread plant, but there are places where grass hasn't reached, which looks similar to what the Dinosaurs would see

    Allosaurus.. something tells me it's that little purple fecker with the corythosaurus crest from the intro. I had that one and it was supposed to be an Allosaurus

    haha i find it hilarious that the geek group is a lot more than dinosaurs but Ydaw gets all the fame and credit! it seams so popular that it should just get its own channel!

    • @KhanMann66
      @KhanMann66 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I think it should become it's own channel. YT needs more dinosaur channels. Not really interested the other stuff.
