Dude you have come really far, and cemented yourself as one of the best in terms of useful knife reviews. Keep it up as long as it's feasible because we love it.
Very impressive! From your and Big Brown Bear's testing Vanax seems like a "perfect steel" candidate. It is tough, corrosion resistant and wear resistant. Thanks as always for your testing.
Nice work Pete! If you ever get bored, you can try checking for how long steels hold a high sharpness, using cigarette paper push cutting or slicing as a stopping point.
Wow, any more tests like that one and you'll have to start taking precautions against possible RSI. At least maybe some warm up stretching beforehand. Amazing steel.
Thanks for the video! I ordered 100’ of rope and some stropping compounds and a new strop so i can get back to my stropping back lol. And be a rope guy like you. How many feet of rope have you cut so far?
Pretty cool man. You must have one massive forearm and one normal forearm now. That lower angel has to be taking away from the toughness. Can you do the old smack the blade off the brick test with these tests?👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Yeah, give it a few months, and, they'll start showing up in production. Knowing Spyderco, they probably already have one in development, as we speak. :)
I would think an innovative company like Spyderco could have more than one iron in the fire at a given time. Even so, we would not likely see if they do for several months, at least. Also, after thinking about this, I believe the first companies to offer VANAX in a production knife will end up being one of the big name Chinese companies.
Mike Uman idk about that but spyderco usually tests out a new steel via the mule lineup if they use it in a mule and people like it they may put it in some production knives
M390 should very much be in the ballpark of 61-62RHC, but would it not be prudent to re-test one (preferably newer batch) against Vanax at the same parameters?
Rama C It would definitely be, but the M390 test was close enough and it was only a month or so ago. I can only do so much and hope what I do put out is of use. Theres always another layer of prudence I could be doing I guess.
I am surprised it does so well... much better than how Uddeholm-Bohler ranks their steels themselves. 810 vs 790ish... with this much of a difference in alloy... something seems off, but who am I say having no experience with Nitrogen
It's similar to 1.4116 aka Krupp 4116. It's a low carbide steel similar to Sanvick 12c27/13c26 and 440a class. With a good heat treat you'll get fine grain structure, very fine carbides, high edge stability, high sharpness and good toughness for a stainless. Wear resistance would be low but ease of sharpening is high. I have a Fox machete in that steel and it's great for a stainless steel.
elmax,m 390,vanax,vanadis 8. Which one is best for knive?Or dou you have another steel for advice?it is really important for me.I want to buy ones ,I dont want to pay ekstra money.I need 26-28 cm full size knive for outdoors.Thank you.
from uddenholm - the new vanax superclean replaces both previous versions. That plus the comp shown in the earlier vids was the best i could get from them
I'd be interested in a direct comparison between M390 and Vanax regarding toughness and usability in large fixed blades (6-7" blade length). Having tested cryo'd M390 at 59-60 HRC in this specific midsized survival knife category, I can say, that it is certainly up to the task; you just should think twice about what you are doing i.e. don't split wood on stone. As far as work with hardwood goes: no problems with everything up to dried out oak with gnarly grain and knots. I wonder how Vanax would stack up to that. Also interesting would be to see how it sharpens. In my experience the M390 I have is able to quickly polish out touchups from a Spyderco Ultrafine rod with stropping on leather: no toothyness left what so ever. If Vanax stands it's ground in a direct comparison the last question would be if it's worth the price. Even M390 is really fucking expensive, so how much would it hurt to go the extra mile in corrosion resistance? Great video, Pete! Always glad to see new steel tests that are complemented with goofy over the top fillers. Btw: you should check out the game "Undertale". It runs on pretty much every computer, takes next to nothing in space on your hard drive and most of all it's a retro styled game with heart and soul, so if you should find a little time outside family, job and knife stuff just check it out, you'd love it. (Also the soundtrack would suit your videos well, thats the reason I'm getting the idea to comment about it.) Cudos to the person loaning these beauties to Pete.

Vanax is one bloody expensive steel! Shannon steel laps is awesome! As was frieza in this video.
I'm much looking forward to my Vanax Knife!!!
Yeah, it definitely seems to have a great overall balance. Shame its so pricey - I would have many a folding knife in it, if it were possible!

GPKNIVES thanks!
Welcome. Good looking knife design too. =)
Glad to see the music to the max back. Thanks again.
thanks to Chris and Pete for this! compelling test scenario. these would be amazing steels to have in a kitchen, methinks.
OH MY, THANK YOU! MY BODY IS SAVED FROM BEING BEATEN WITH JUMPER CABLES!
I go ur back fam
LOL!
Exellent test man! Surprised about the edge stability at 13 degrees! Impressive steel for sure.
where did all this videos come from !!!! yay vanax is the jam in 2023
Your music is soothing to my soul.

Wow that’s impressive those steels are awesome
Goddamn vanax is a hot steel :P. That's the performance I was excited to see.
Wow, any more tests like that one and you'll have to start taking precautions against possible RSI. At least maybe some warm up stretching beforehand. Amazing steel.
Amazing stuff!
I know I'm late to the party but did you do rust testing on this/how corrosion resistant is it actually? on par with LC200N?
Favorite steel of mine. So hard to find, but i try to buy every instance of it i don't hate 🙂
Thanks for the video! I ordered 100’ of rope and some stropping compounds and a new strop so i can get back to my stropping back lol. And be a rope guy like you. How many feet of rope have you cut so far?
oh god, easily 1500 meters by now.
Pretty cool man. You must have one massive forearm and one normal forearm now. That lower angel has to be taking away from the toughness. Can you do the old smack the blade off the brick test with these tests?👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Nice one Pete!
Wondering how the z finit compares to the spydiechefs lc200n
You've managed to break my knife buying fast. Now, I'm looking for a production knife in VANAX just because...
a production knife might be hard to find at this stage, but Shannons make these and Autine also uses it too, I think
Yeah, give it a few months, and, they'll start showing up in production. Knowing Spyderco, they probably already have one in development, as we speak. :)
Mike Uman not likely spyderco is in the process of switching from h1 to lc200n on the salt series

Vanax maxes out at 61-62, and you lose stain resistance and edge stability going that high. Its sweet spot is 60/61HRC. This knife is at 60.5HRC.
I am surprised it does so well... much better than how Uddeholm-Bohler ranks their steels themselves. 810 vs 790ish... with this much of a difference in alloy... something seems off, but who am I say having no experience with Nitrogen
Rama C also remember this is just one kind of test. cable ties, cardboard, wood etc - all may effect edges in different ways
Do S110v mirror vs toothy
How do you think X50CrMov15 would perform? Edge retention? What steel is it similar to?

Thank's! Interesting. 👍
Was that Vanax 37 or Vanax 75?

knife review of these blades?
FF theme right?
