    I absolutely love this idea, and I am going to show my husband first thing in the morning and get him to watch a couple of your videos. I think I have seen this method before on one or two of Larry Hall's videos before he passed away a couple of years ago and I think this method would work really well for us. Last year I bought a bunch of grow bags and had some problems with nutrients being washed out from all the rain we sometimes get. So this year I decided to use a watering from beneath method that I saw on a channel called Grow Abundance that is self-fed from a 50-gal bin which I am hoping to capture rainwater into. I am really getting excited about this growing season with all of these wonderful ideas that I am going to be trying. Thank you so very much for all you teach us about your methods, I am really learning quite a bit from you. Many Blessings to you always and many thanks for all you do.

    Mate, once again you’ve taught me so much
    Pyrethrum spraying. I had bad white fly on all my greens in my kratkey buckets and was drenching and lost everything
    I knew it must of been that and I gave up. I’m going to start again now just need to work out how to control the bugs on my plants outside. Love your shows and your efforts over the years.
    Thankyou mate.

    A few notes
    A. I noticed you had your big tank feed the gutters .however with a faulty float it will drain the entire supply. If you have a sub reservoir you can use it to supply the gutter systems and use the main supply to feed the reservoir. In this way , daily you can turn on the main feeder to fill the smaller sub reservoir and avoid losing the entire reservoir of expensive fertilizer mix.

  • @matthewfarrell317
    @matthewfarrell317 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Considering that I grow root veggies in a constant flood and drain bed, I cannot see how you will fail in the rain gutter system. Be interesting to see what comes out. Beetroot and onion does extremely well in flood and drain.
    Also I would steal that rain gutter idea for citrus if I didn't already have amazing soil here to grow in, I am actually moving my hydroponic system during the next few weeks to plant citrus there instead lol

    when growing ginger make sure if you break the root that you let it dry out to form a skin . I would have left the top of the root stick out where the shoots emerge from. I have been leaving the root in a 3 litre milk container that I cut out with some water on my window sill until it develops fine roots and green shoot formation on top. Planted in Hydroponics today. Potatoes - leave a potato on window sill and plant the plant that grows off the potato. This avoids the seed potato rotting in hydroponics.

    I see you have got some advice about the spraying. I use 5ml neem oil and 3ml dishwashing liquid in 1L water and spray once a week. This is more to stop them coming then killing them. But eventually they will die and you will be free of them.

  • @melody5437

    Better than pyrethrum: neem oil. Spray it in the evening and the beneficial insects will be unaffected, as they're active in the daylight. Bonus: neem acts as a plant food. Now I have a question, and apologies if I just missed it: what keeps the coir/perlite mix from trickling into the gutters? I've done a wicking system before (faux Earth Boxes), but there weren't many holes and those were covered with weed cloth. Even then, we got some spill-through.

  • @valdimare
    @valdimare 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Im guessing the EC and PH stays constant in the RG system because its not actually the plant that is taking the water out. The wicking effect just takes what ever is in the reservoir. This is why i love these passive systems way less maintenace and my opinion less wasted nutrient solutions.

    • @Hoocho
      @Hoocho  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fantastic observation, I have noticed once the roots take over the res (as with some of the pumpkins I’ve had in system) they do start stripping the nutrient.
      So this stands to reason.

    • @ianbrown9578
      @ianbrown9578 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Hoocho Interesting! I was going to say though that you were doing your measurements near the float valve where you would expect levels to be the same as in the reservoir. What are the levels like at the opposite end of the channel? I would expect a change over the length of the channel as the plants take what they need. However the wicking point above may account for little or no change over length of channel. :-)

    • @Hoocho
      @Hoocho  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ianbrown9578 theoretically due to diffusion generally EC will not vary across the channel.

  • @ThomasMasterpiece

    One little thing for the float-cover: when it's condensig during the night: the condensing water will run down the cover and ubder the edges outside. Of you woiluld just add a little lid near the cutted outline of your pipe, the water will drop down inside the pipe. Just an idea...

  • @aaronspain3387
    @aaronspain3387 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Hoocho, I'm curious about these wicking beds you're using for the trees and the root veggies. Are you hooking these all up to the same res? Also, are you flushing and cycling the drainpipe wicking beds weekly/fornightly? If so, do you find the plants are having any problems with a lack of dissolved oxygen? The fruit trees in the nursery pots should be fine, because they have aeration holes built in, but the veggies in those huge buckets with only the mesh pots in the bottom, wouldn't really have much of a source of airflow in to the root base if the pipe isn't flooding and draining regularly, or running like a constant-flow NFT. How did the radishes and stuff go in those giant tubs?
    I'm an aquaponics guy, and I'm incredibly lazy/labour-efficient, so the more that I can automate and the less manual monitoring of EC&pH levels that I can do, the better. I like having one spot to check the stats for the system, though with about 10 of these 3meter pipes, using standing water on a float valve, I'd go crazy checking the consumption of nutrients, pH in all of them, and manual draining every week.
    Edit: What are you using for the taps on the end of the pipe? I'm going mad trying to find something to adapt a 90mm round drainpipe to a 20mm BSP so I can drain it using a hose, 19mm irrigation pipe or 20mm PVC piping back to the res.

    I like the automated nature of this but I’m not sure I see the real difference between this and conventional methods

    I can't get this system to work. No matter what i try. Seems there are just too many bacterial spores in the air which cause root rot. Every single time..

    I'm confused. All of these plants are shown growing in pots of what basically looks like dirt. He refers to his dirt with fancy terminology, but it's still dirt, not water. I thought hydroponic gardens were supposed to be growing in water with added nutrients.

      Just because you assert that something is a certain way, does not make it that way.

      @@Hoocho I'm confused how you can call it hydroponic when you're clearly growing the plants in dirt. To me form what little I've learned so far, the whole point of hydroponic is to make the plants grow in water. So this video is discouraging, because I don't want to bother with dirt.

      @@heard3879 there is no soil. It’s a hydroponic soilless grow media that contains no nutrition.
      The nutrients are delivered by the hydroponic solution.
