"If you don't believe me, count the pieces."
I'm still dazed after that one.

George Marshall Norman was not Frank Marshall. Less famous , George was a regular at Hastings. A lower tier master who also played Botvinik & F. Yates at Hastings. In this game George sets up a hellacious attack featuring pinned bishops & knight/ queen combination power plays. The early middle game is where white arranges things for a killing. A lesser player like me would have been trembling.

2:10 - 2:15 "the idea is, if bishop takes knight, queen takes king." We played like this when we were kids haha.

Simply amazing, Rubinstein seems always victorious. Just like a Terminator of chess 😅 I mean even when he's 30 minutes late he can manage perfectly to develop an awesome strategy and win. Thank you so much for share this one!
By the way, being so worried about his moustache makes me remember Monsieur Poirot. He was only as clever as Rubinstein but not a genius of chess.

In his book on Rubinstein (Akiva Rubinstein:Uncrowned King vol I), IM John Donaldson made an observation that Rubinstein rarely failed to secure the advantage of the Two Bishops, and even more rarely failed to convert them into a win. I can think of no other GM that was as skilled with the Two Bishops as Rubinstein (even though, in this case, he "only" used one to win a piece instead of checkmate)

I have a theory that Rubinstein's moustache is a source was playing strength. Like Samson's hair.

Rubinstein did eventually shave off his whiskers and appears clean-shaven in photographs clicked later on in his chess career. Against lesser known players, Rubinstein excelled in positional finesses.

Another fatal novelty against Akiba.Going off-book just plays to Akiba's strengths.
