- At the recent 2023 BWF World Championships, Seo Seung Jae of Korea, achieved the doubles double, winning both the men's and mixed doubles titles.
This was a feat that had only ever been done by 4 male players in the World Championships 46 year history, and hadn't been done since 1999!
But more than that, doing the doubles double in badminton as a whole is something which has become rarer and rarer!
All of this leads to an interesting question...
WHY?!
Why has the doubles double become so rare, especially at the highest level of badminton.

Seo Seung Jae actually became world champions before Yuta Watanabe, who i consider to be one of most talented doubles player currently playing.

Winning 2 worlds championship in 5 days at the pace the game is played nowadays, moreover in doubles.
People can't understand until they've been on court or seen in real life what it means.
These guys are beasts of explosion, endurance, precision, mental strength... because if you lack of one of those, you can't play 15 to 25 tournaments per year and continue to train at the same time.

during the world championship and the 2023 open of China, I was quite amazed how the mixed double "metagame" can vary quite a lot from one pair to another.
Some examples to explain what I mean :
- Watanabe making service returns at the front or mid court and keeping the net while Higashino takes the back court in semi finals agains Delrue/Gicquel
- Thom Gicquel explains how they stepped up when they allowed Delphine to go more at the back of the court ; while some top pairs (like Zheng & Huang) seem to avoid this situation at all costs.

I could most certainly look into the evolution of all the disciplines. Would take plenty of time and research but could be very interesting to see.
Maybe in the future though because right now I have a few other projects lined up!
Mixed doubles in badminton is a very interesting discipline, as the strategy is largely based on a strong-weak pairing (strong in the sense of power, speed, reach etc, and not in skill) on your own end and your opponent's end. This strong-weak dynamic is much more accentuated in badminton compared to tennis or table tennis (which I think is mainly why mixed doubles does not have a high profile in tennis and table tennis).
If we could get a team event based solely on mixed doubles (say 3 XD pairs per team), that could be interesting. At the moment, they only play a one-fifth role in Sudirman Cup

- 12:50 crazy to think that blip in the 2000's Chinese domination of the discipline is largely because of one player. She did it with two different partners, in two different eras and playing styles, Liliyana Natsir.
Yeah all 4 of those Indonesian mixed titles invovled 1 lady...Liliyana Natsir. A video on her will for sure be happening at some point

For a possible next video topic, perhaps you can chart the development of the new Korean wave coming over badminton. After the retirement of the LYD and JJS, Son Wan Ho etc, the Koreans dropped off the radar in tournaments for a few years till ASY came into the spotlight, and now they have a crop of young brilliant players looking to dominate the scene for years to come!
My next video will stick with Korea but will look into something else entirely. I won't give it away yet but it's for sure gonna make a great topic

Great vid! I was kind of left wondering at the specialisation of the mixed doubles part of the story, if the same happened with the woman? as you only had male examples of this occuring I wasnt sure if that meant it didn't happen as much with the woman or if the men were the consistent factors in these mixed doubles pairings? But yeah, top vid mate, and all congrats to Seo Seung-jae.
Very fair question to ask. All the figures I used, with exception to the first one in the intro included female players. And whilst my overall conclusion for female players ties in with the same as male players, I did focus on the male players more (because it was linked to Seo Seung Jae).
With the females there would be some slight differences, most notably China specialising in females happened later, but all in all what I said about males in this video would relate to the females too

Badminton has evolved in all areas of the game. Speed, power, physicality and so much more it's almost become a different sport in itself. I believe there were so many factors. For example, the new scoring system encourages faster and more exciting play compared to the old system where you'd only win a point on a serve. Sport has evolved to a point where it's a team effort, not just the player. But also from the coach, physio, personal trainer and even video analyst. It has become more competitive than ever before and Seo's double double will raise the bar for other nations to lift their game and hopefully raise the standard of badminton to be more competitive and enjoyable to watch.

Hey Ben, do you think the scoring system change to 21 points (2002) had a major impact to the way the game is paced, and therefore everything else directly and indirectly related?
The scoring system definitely had an effect. Initially it was huge but it did settle. But I would say in doubles play the first 4 shots became even more important and focused on. Not sure I can put all the effects of the scoring change into a comment. Maybe a video for later...
Your videos are excellent but could you reduce the background music while you are talking(sometimes the music is just too blaring). It helps the audience to understand better imo
Noted for next time. I'm still learning about audio and all that sort of stuff. Will try and improve it for everyone's enjoyment
in other w ords.. they can only do it when theyre young.. cuz younger players require less time to recover stamina and from injury.. and then during game play they can last longer for 2 events vs if ur like 30 u would be tired quicker

I'm not entirely sure there is, there was a type of Slam a player could achieve by winning pretty much everything. Only Lin Dan ever did it. But it's a little moot now as one of the events, the World Cup, is no longer held
Speciality, diversity, physicality and depth are true. More players from different countries make the sport more attractive.

Yuta Watanabe achieved the same thing and I am a fan, but Seo's case is different and far harder coz he actually fought with top ranking players particularly those in China. In Watanabe's case, the top players weren't present when he won the titles.

For the record, Seo is pronounced and historically written as "Suh". Seo is a poor phonetic spelling, but then again Lee Yong Dae, like all Lees from Korea, should really be Ee or another phonetic combination to make the proper syllable/sound.

world championship tournaments are less prestigious in the modern eraa becuase it is yealy affair now. now only the olympic gold medal immortalizes the player.
