- Hey everyone! Today I take you through what it's like working as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (or MLS or CLT). I have a degree in Biology and this is my first position as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist. I don't work in a hospital (I work M-F, 8a-4:30p) and my lab does a very specific type of testing so if you would like a more detailed video of how I ended up working as a Clinical Lab Scientist and quitting my nursing program, let me know in the comments! Is this a "fairly laid back" job, as in do you continuously have to stand all day? Or can you do some of the work while sitting, take a minor break hear and there, maybe go for a 1 minute stroll to sort of let the body walk it out kind of deal. This is coming from someone with nagging knee pain. Thanks in advance :]
What did you major in? I’m interested in this field due to having a nice towards science initially thought about CompSci but don’t think programming is for me and this field seems very rewarding and valued
I think it would be very helpful to make a more detailed video (if you can) of what you did/do. Also you should do a video of how you came into this field with the position title that you have without having the certification. Are you currently in school for MLS? Are you going to sit for a specialist exam? Or the general? What state are you currently in where they require you not to have certification?
Background of me...I also have a bachelors in biology. At the time ASCP allowed for you to be certified as a MLT but if you have a bachelor's in biology you can sit for the MT exam. They phased that out before I graduated so I'm sort stuck/lazy to go back to school to for an MLS. In Georgia. 🤮

hello, i’m going into my senior year of high school and i’m interested in majoring in CLS, what was your college experience like and would you say part time work is manageable during schooling?
Hey! I have a degree in biology so I can speak from my experience of that major. The first year or two of college is typically gen ed classes and your basic core classes. I worked part time all 4 years of college, but I cut back some once I got into the more difficult classes of my major around Junior and senior year. I would definitely suggest working jobs on campus if possible! I hope this helps :)

Got a question is a clinical scientist is same as medical scientist? I’m going to a two year college in fall I didn’t do well placement test so I didn’t get accepted to biology but once I took the classes that placement test register me in I go to medical laboratory technician so I can go to my bachelors and master Bc I want to become a medical scientist but I heard you need PhD and also is it hard to find job like that I don’t want to have hard time looking for jobs
Hey! Yes the two titles are basically the same thing. It could possibly depend on where you live but as far as I know, you don't need a PhD! The highest degree my lab manager has is a master's and all my supervisors have a bachelor's. Sounds like your getting an MLS degree ? If so, you shouldn't have a hard time finding a job, especially with this degree and if you sit for licensure! I hope this helps, lmk if you have more questions ☺️

Hi, in college I studied biology and I currently work in a clinical cancer testing lab. So as far as the real world, I'm assuming your referencing the work place ?
If so, the labs I took for biology and chemistry helped me learn basic lab techniques like pipetting, rounding rules, avoiding contamination, different measuring instruments, purification, etc.
I also had to take cancer courses in college so the general knowledge helps me understand terminology used in the lab.

@@RisaB Great answer thanks a ton! I got 3 semesters worth of chemistry to take so besides the lab stuff, how helpful is knowing all the theory of it? I spend a ton of time learning the chemical bonds, an ions charge, chemical equations etc and I just wonder how much of this will be used in real life work experience. Or is it something I shouldn’t lose my mind on.

Ohhh ok, I understand. I haven't had any of that come into play at work/real life lol. I think in general it's nice to have an understanding of the basic ideas in these general science courses but in my experience I haven't had to use theories, ion charges, etc.

Hi Roua! I would look up job paths for your specific major and see what the job market is like in your area. Some things to consider would be how many jobs are available, would it be easy to change paths if you end up not liking one, do you need a masters for a job or is a bachelors enough. These are just a few things to consider when deciding if your major is right for you. I hope this helps you a little ☺️

Hey! Well it depends on where you work state wise and settings wise. I make a good salary for entry level but the pay would be different (likely more) if I worked at a hospital for example. So that's something to consider, you can look up averages in your area and if you decide you go this route you can negotiate (since you know what the average is). But yes I do like my job! I work with a team as far as communicating for projects and training but the actual work is typically done by myself so I like that lol.
this was my question as well . i know in nyc starting pay is usually 65-72k/year . definitely search the area you plan to work at .
also what i do is search up job positions in google and some of them will include their salary .
What made you switch from being a nursing student to a CLS student? Was nursing not what you expected?

Yes it is, and I would imagine starting pay is even better for someone with experience/a CLS degree

Hi! Yes, if incoming samples is my assigned station for the month then I process all of the blood tubes myself

Hi! Unfortunately I can’t say exactly where I work, we aren’t a chain company so there’s only one location in the states. But I found my lab and others by just googling clinical lab/medical lab jobs in my area. Hope this helps!

Yes no problem! There are some labs that specifically want those who have phlebotomy experience. And there's also some skills you learn than is helpful in the lab such as accessioning samples ☺️
