Hi, I have a question. I’m a junior in high school and I’m looking into becoming a MLT. If you don’t mind me asking, what was your path into becoming a MLS? I understand if the question is too personal though.
I was in the same position as you when I was in high school so I thought I would share some of my wisdom. I live in Canada so all you really need to be a certified MLS is a bachelor that will allow you to write the national board exam (Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science aka CSMLS) and then you have to pass the board exam and be registered in the CMLTO aka College Of Medical Laboratory Technologists Of Ontario). I'm not sure if they have to registrer anywhere though. If you are Canadian and would like more information, feel free to message me and I would be more then happy to help you out!
@@mandiangumd hi I was wondering if a bachelor in biology will allow me to write the national board exam to become a medical lab technologist? I also live in Canada.

Great video! This is something I've been looking in to for a while now, and I'm getting ready to go off to college. When you say you're a traveling tech, does that mean you control when and where you get to travel and work, or are you sent somewhere by someone?
@@derekaray Also, how often are you working with other people? I know it’s not as up close and personal as doctors and nurses, but are you by yourself a lot?
@@Imthat_maddie That honestly depends on the size of the hospital. If you work in a doctor's office or a small clinic you may work by yourself. In a larger hospital, you do have to work with others in one area. For example, chemistry is a busy area so there are usually three people working that one bench. That's doing the day shift but the night shift usually have less staff with only one people per area.
We also take blood samples depending on the hospital. They will ask for phlebotomy experience. But if you are a hospital going through so many samples, it is less convenient for techs in chemistry or hematology, micro, etc to have to go through all of their sample batches and go to patients. If you are a small facility with not many samples then it’s fine.
Hi, greetings from Indonesia. In Indonesia, we also takes samples (doing plebotomy, swab for mrsa, or even swab naso and oropharing) but it also depends on the laboratory or hospital. Cheers😀
Does this job involve critical science-y thinking or is it very routine? Like, you use specific testers for a specific disease or virus/etc and just keep it moving instead of analyzing cells and bacteria? Is there a specialty for mlts that keep it routine? Hope u can answer
Lab techs are very much behind the scenes. Now if you work core lab this will feel more routine because you’re doing the basics like running CBCs and performing differentials, Urinalysis, Chemistries like CMP which include stuff like your electrolytes, glucose levels, BUN,etc. But lab techs are also more hands on. Some hospitals have there lab techs collect and count bone marrow slides for patients with leukemia. Also, your Micro-techs can plate and figure out exactly what organism is making the patient sick and do susceptibility test to tell the doctor what drug to use to treat the pathogen. Or your blood bank tech Who has to do antibody work ups to find units of blood for a patient. That’s why you see lab techs say without us the doctors are guessing. And yes we call a lot of critical results.. you can always hear the nurses disappointment when they say it’s the lab on the phone😂
im a lab. technician also... but still i dont have any idea whats the process and how much is the show money for us aspiring filipinos who wanted to work abroad.
It looks like y'all use mostly Beckman Coulter for your core lab analyzers. Coming from a Roche heavy lab to one that uses BC instead, it is a learning CURVE. wish you best of luck in the field love ❤

I understand if you can't directly answer this question or simply don't know but I would also like to say you've inspired me to further my career/education in healthcare. LOVE the videos!!!!
I am not sure if it's possible, because to be eligible for the examination you must satisfy their minimum requirements. I would check out ASCP, AMT, & AAB credentialing and see if you meet any of their requirement to sit for the exam. I hope that helps and thank you your comment made my day. 🥰

I thought I wanted to do nursing, but decided against it. Now I want to do MLT but my gpa is only a 2.84 so far. I have 3 more pre reqs. Even if I make a high A in all, I fear I won't be able to get in. My school is purely gpa based plus an interview. They say at least 2.8 is needed to be competive but that is all I have right now. Has anyone gotten in with low GPA?
I start clinicals in January and I feel like we haven’t been thoroughly taught about the different instruments, is this something that we only get taught on the job?
Hey, your pay honestly depends on many different factors. Like where you live and whether or not you work in a small clinic, big hospital, or work as a travel Med-tech and what department in the lab! Also MT’s with a bachelor's degree make more than MLT which is an associate degree. So on average, MLT’s( associated degree) make between $18-24and MT’s ( Bachelor degree) make between $25-30. And if you work 2nd or 3rd shift you could get shift differential pay with can be an extra 2 dollars per hour.
One of the best jobs for those who like to be left a lone to do their work in peace. You get used to stat orders that are annoying but they come to you in a pneumstic tubes and results nowadays are just uploaded to EPIC/LLEAP. Occasional phone calls or messages via pager (most preferred pager messaging, as did I) It's like microbio but you get paid well to do it, you need to have an organized mind or it'll feel like you're all over the place.

@@derekaray what is core lab? My other question is, what do u do about the smells or do you not smell anything at all?
im a lab. technician also... but still i dont have any idea whats the process and how much is the show money for us aspiring filipinos who wanted to work abroad.
Hi I m also lab technician but recently I m not working due to personal reasons. I m missing my work, machines...
Girl same. I wish you the best. ❤
Thanks for sharing so u need t use the microscope often or MLS. Use more..??.
do mlts have the option to do 12 hr shifts?
It looks like y'all use mostly Beckman Coulter for your core lab analyzers. Coming from a Roche heavy lab to one that uses BC instead, it is a learning CURVE. wish you best of luck in the field love ❤
I’m actually pursuing my associates degree to become a MLT. I’m so excited about my new career choice
Hi Dereka, I'm a CPT-1 and I was wondering if I got enough clinical lab experience if I cold test out to be a MLT?? I understand if you can't directly answer this question or simply don't know but I would also like to say you've inspired me to further my career/education in healthcare. LOVE the videos!!!!
I am not sure if it's possible, because to be eligible for the examination you must satisfy their minimum requirements. I would check out ASCP, AMT, & AAB credentialing and see if you meet any of their requirement to sit for the exam. I hope that helps and thank you your comment made my day. 🥰
@@derekaray Thank you so much for getting back to my comment Dereka!! I honestly wasn't expecting a response, thank you so much for taking time out of your day to answer my question and you've defiantly pointed me in the right direction 😆 with my current experience I can actually take a 6 month accrediting program. THANK YOU SO MUCH DEREKA!!! I wish you the best of travel's!!🤩😊
How much do you make? I want to do this but leaning towards sonography because it pays more. Would rather do this tho
Ian lab technition from kerala love u guyss
Hii
Can u gudie me how to do work in ur country as a lab technician from india
Anyone think I might be able to get into this field of work after majoring in biomedical technology?
MLT here...though this work is stressful sometimes 🤣🤣🤣honestly I got tired with them night shifts
How many samples collection do you result in a shift?
What happens to all the used petri dishes and glass bottles? Do they get sent out for professional cleaning, or do they get thrown out as a biohazard?
Very nice mam, feeling proud for you .
What are the salaries like and what is work/life balance like?
Considering this field n I really like it, but I have sweaty hand, is it a problem?😢
Hey Dereka am trying to go back to school to have a license in this as well. Any recommendations and how long is the program? Thanks
How many years do I have to study for an MLT degree ?
I start clinicals in January and I feel like we haven’t been thoroughly taught about the different instruments, is this something that we only get taught on the job?
I am a medical laboratory technicianin in india🥰
How many years you studied pls? 2 years??
@Marwa:_: I have an associates degree so I went to a community college for two years.
Thank you so much for this video 🙏
Nice vid. I'm a medical technologist here in the Philippines. Planning to work someday in US.
I wish to be a medtech after college thank you so much for making this video
Love this. Thinking of doing this
What is pay range for an medical Laboratory Technologists
Occasional phone calls or messages via pager (most preferred pager messaging, as did I)
It's like microbio but you get paid well to do it, you need to have an organized mind or it'll feel like you're all over the place.
I just started working as a lab medical assistant..I am so scared😢😢. I dont feel like I can do this, watching your videoes is giving me some confidence..but its nerve wrecking
