Was about to say that! I think this is way more intelligent than using CTRL+X bc you can decide what you want to do with the file when you are at the destination directory and not have to decide before copying / cutting
🤓 Can also option + right click to show the "move" command in the context menu. I also discovered that recently despite having used Macs & Windows for decades.
Most important: 1. In System Preferences under Software Update uncheck "automatic Updates". 2. Never go for the latest updates (major updates). Hold back until the 3rd part devs give green light for their plugins to work correctly with the latest macOS. Have fun!🙂
Along with that - I don't know if things have changed - but when updating get the combo updater instead of doing piece-meal updates. Remember the old saying - those who live on the bleeding edge are doomed to get cut by it.
Yes, That's good advice. I always wait for about 6 months to update system OS to allow for that. Been on Mac since the early 90's and have I have lost almost no working time to computer error. Also never had an internal HD fail or any hardware fault...so far.
I had a 2014 Mac Pro desktop (trashcan). In 2019 it crapped out so I took it to the Apple store to be fixed. They tried a number of replacement parts and fixes over several visits (the first visit costing me $750aus in parts) but the problem was never resolved. The Trashcan was 4 years out of warranty but Apple kept trying to fix it for no cost after failing the first time which was great but in the end, they finally gave up on it ever working... and then they did something remarkable. They replaced my dead out of warranty 5yr old trashcan with the latest iteration of the Mac Pro series, the updated 2019 model. The 2019 Mac Pro is worth almost 3 times the price of what the Trashcan cost me here in Aus. Apple had a courier drop off my new Mac Pro to my door a few days later and its been killing it ever since. Apple user for life here.
This is a good point for choosing Apple. What it also does is switch people around from telling the world that their Mac had major issues and instead praise Apple for customer service! Haha. All the problems with thoae 6 years of trashcan Macs are all forgotten! Crazy how reputation is created...
I also made the switch, recently. I was 24 years in windows audio and got a Mac system in April. The hassle of the drivers is a lot more minimized. I’m not quite as fast as I am in Windows yet, but I’m not running blind either. It feels more “stable”. You can work a bit more confidently with lower chances of a crash. Also, now I have the option of finally getting the McDsp APB.
Welcome to the family! I made the switch back in 2011 when I was still a network engineer. I always had problems with my Windows machines. The learning curve for the switch was fast. The problem with the hot processing was due to the older processor architecture. Even Macs had that problem with Intel processors. But then came the M1, and that was a whole different ballgame. Based on ARM processor architecture, every part works with efficiency, so you get the full package, and it delivers. Funny thing, ARM is coming to PCs again! While ARM processors have been implemented in PCs before-like in Chromebooks and the Microsoft Surface Pro X-the M1 has shown just how powerful and efficient ARM-based computing can be.
Welcome to the Mac ☺️ It’s still funny to see people enjoying the switch from PC to Mac 😁 I think your square, cheap Samsung SSD is one of the slowest. I suggest you considering the Samsung NVMe ones-they’re double the speed. The internal SSD is so expensive because it’s a 40gb/s drive s, while the fastest external drives achieve around 20 Gb/s (even if are sold at 40gb/s) David, of course, you can cut files 😁, but it’s called “move” instead of “cut.” Just move a file while holding the command key on the keyboard. You’re welcome ☺️ The search function is awesome! Try using smart folders, tags for files, FileVault, Time Machine, and Automator-you can automate so many operations. For music, never update to the latest macOS right away. Wait at least six months or even a year for safety. The problem isn’t the macOS itself, but that plugin companies need time to update their software. The Mac is so silent because the M processor uses ARM technology (the same as in iPhones) and not RISC like Intel, so it consumes about 10 times less power.
I made the switch a few months ago and expected a lot of problems or incompatibilities... but it was a smooth switch with no problems at all. Everything worked immediately and the projects (I'm a Cubase user) load much faster and everything works much better... I'm very excited about how much power these Apple Silicon based Macs have and the lack of noise is a big surprise. For the first time I can also use a microphone in the same room :D I think especially for producers, mixing & mastering engineers Macs are a big improvement to a Windows PC.
Also everything is on iCloud when you switch later is just seamless to get all the files settings back not like on windows. Never go back😂 I don’t make any music I’m doing graphic design and other things too. These things are crazy I have an m1 max it’s a beast still.
Did you know the Ultra models have two Thunderbolt 4 ports on the front of the Mac Studio as well? So you also have 6 TB4 ports :) and a copper heatsink instead of a aluminum one!
Congrats on migrating on Mac, Dave! I rarely use my M1 Air 16 (I am 20+ years on Mac's). Unfortunatelly I can't play games and train AI on Mac. And that "old" firewire devices definetely will not work on M1/2/3 type processor. Also my M1 Air has no HDMI or DisplayPort so I use Type C HUB with HDMI to connect it to my monitors (and I can't connect it to my 3 monitors), interesting how Mac Studio behaves with 3 monitors. Also lack of ability to upgrade Mac is frustrating. So I am still on PC for 1-2 years but time will tell, may be I will switch to Apple.
M2 cpu only upgrades to m2 pro with 10 or 12 cores(cant remember) going from m2pro to ultra or max just upgrades the gpu. so if you just do music production getting pro is the best bang for buck, if you also do video or 3D rendering or other gpu power work than you could upgrade the gpu aswell (so use the m2 max or m2ultra)
Hi David, An interesting video. I'm very pleased that your switch to Mac has been so rewarding. I have been a Mac user for 30 years and have never looked back. The one thing I wanted to do was allay your fears about upgrades to OS. My current machine is a 2014 iMac, ten years old (so in tech terms, ANCIENT!) but, like yours, specced to the hilt. I have gone as far as I can with the OS for my processor and am currently running the equally aged Catalina - I can't go any further - but everything still works! It is only now that I am getting messages from one or two apps telling me I ought to upgrade my OS, but if I'm working in the box, there's no problem. The point is that your machine is an absolute beast, nicely future-proof, and your current OS will last you a very long time. I know each new OS comes with fancy features, but don't be intimidated; you won't NEED to change for years. Thanks for a great channel. All the best.
David, you're killing it. You got a new fan here. So I'm an FL Studio user for almost 25 years on Windows. I know FL has a Mac version, but I'm stuck on Win for two reasons 1) If audio production was my only concern and 2) If I had the money, you've convinced me to go with a Mac. Anyway, I'm really happy for you man, you seem excited and pumped about your new setup. Silent machine?! Insane. Keep it up, brother.
The only (but not the least, the first) thing to consider is the price (especially the big difference of upgraded ram and ssd). In Italy costs even more than United States due to added taxes.
Good for you! I switched about 12 years ago or so and never looked back. I'm in the IT field and the revelation there was I working on an older Mac developing an application and it had 4gb ram and it worked, and it was old at the time, but it worked maybe better than the a same spec older pc with 8gb of ram. That thing I developed on that machine has generated at least $200M for my company (not me). I have many Macs now, and you'll find that firing up a new and doing is a dream. If you do the thunderbolt transfer to the new machine, all your stuff is there and installed and the only problem is getting the licenses authorized, and it takes maybe a couple hours top to bottom. Regarding the hard drive prices, those drives are blazing fast. Like you might be getting 7TB transfer speeds on that internal drive, and good luck buying that and having it work with external drives. It's a bit of the same experience with their displays, like boy are they expensive to what you think you are comparing them too, , but they are kick ass. Regardless, good for you, and I hope the machine blows you away trouble free for a long time (I'm sure it will).
The most Horrendous issue is that they chose to solder all SSDs on the motherboards since 2016. I wish bad stuff happens to them so they learn to stop doing that
Glad I’m not alone in this! I too recently went full hog on a windows rig for music production in Cubase and I just kept getting issue after issue after cpu spike crackle etc etc. switched to m3 max MacBook Pro and the Mac COMPLETELY outclasses my brand new *theoretically* more powerful windows rig. Especially stability wise. I also had ridiculous usb issues like you which were instantly solved by Mac. Oh and also the complete silence of the Mac compared to idle fans on my windows rig still sounding like a small generator in the corner of the room.
I'm a life long PC guy. I've got some music production friends work on Macs, so I have a little experience on them. At one of my audio jobs they got a new Mac M1. For such a tiny(form factor?) computer I'm really impressed with how fast it is. The Mac os just like iphones, could be considered smoother and more efficient with CPU usage. I've only seen one M2 Studio in person, and it's a true silent monster!! I don't own a studio or work at a purely professional level. So investing this much into a system isn't feasible. However!, I'm seriously bummed to hear the new intel CPUs and chipsets are causing problems. I'll be needing to build a new system at some point soon. I'm curious if there's a reason why AMD is not an option for PC audio production??. I know they're popular with gamers....I've never used them. Intel has some serious damage control to do, and some catching up with Mac!
I use Ryzen and no issues except when Cubase did the switch to 12 but I just switched to bitwig and haven’t had issues at all with any projects and it maximizes my hyperthreading that the AMD chips do so well
According to data from Dawbench tests, Intel systems at the very least used to be better for virtual instrument usage at low latencies. You might want to check with Scan co uk. They're one of a couple of audio pc providers. As for the recent Intel troubles, the Intel 14xxx series seems to have serious problems, but anything with Alder Lake cores appears to be ok. I use a Ryzen 5950X system, and I'll be checking out out how the 9950X does when it comes out soon. The M1 and M2 computers by Apple are brilliant, but a comparison always pays off. My system HAS to be able to play games, so my choice was simple until I had to do all the research :P .
Great choice !!! I bought my first computer in 2000, a Mac titanium laptop, and then bought the first version of the ProTools MBox. In 2022, I bought the Mac Studio M1 Ultra, and now have the ProTools MBox Studio. I make a new video every week, composing, playing, recording, mixing, etc. The Mac never kicks its fans up to a higher speed and is silent as a sleeping mouse. I am sure you will enjoy your new Mac !! Thanks for your excellent videos and great advice !!! Que va piano va sano y lontano!!!
Hey David! My heart goes out to you man! I don’t have the set up you do by a long shot, but the frustrations (insert your own phrase) no matter what level, we all have our ups and downs with gear. If there’s anything positive about it, it’s that you find the community (eventually) that gets us to the next gear. Rock on!
Don’t know that it’s fair to say the new processors saved their asses when they spent over a decade developing those chips from scratch specifically to one day replace Intel in their machines. They saw what the future held and took it upon themselves to start preparing and planning for it. They didn’t go from a company with zero experience in chip manufacturing to being a market leader by pure luck.
@@harrykatsarosyou're right, they were trying to milk the old cow until it died, and then saved their asses by deciding to finally sell some inovation they've bin hiding in order to make more profit....
i9 16" MBP never had an issue... well other than the fan which is sorted but using a cooling slab and of course they realsed the M series CPU about 3 months after I took delivery 🤦.
Apple developped its own Mx chip because it knew that x86 chips (intel) made its device run as cr_p. In 2021, Apple decide to let this x86 chip archictecture chip to all retard_d companies which are not interested in efficiency and productivity.
Welcome to the club, brother! I think you are really going to like it once you are used to it! I'm not trying to slight Windows at all... I know there are many people who do great work on that platform, but I have found that for ME... it's much easier for me to deal with any issues if things go wrong... and I just click with the OS much more. I've also found that often times the Mac version of a particular DAW just seems more stable. ENJOY!!!
Switching to Mac years ago was the best thing ever - even a Pc that was spec’d out to be as stable for audio as possible still had all sorts of glitches etc , first Mac noticed all devices immediately and just ran , as others have said , wait or just don’t upgrade the OS untill all your gear is officially supported. It’s not like the next OS will have anything special for Audio .
Definitely you're right with Mac Studio. For big(ger) projects a Mac Studio Ultra may be the best choice. But for most people a Mac Studio with a mMax processor will be great. It's incredible what even my Macbook Air with 24gb Ram can handle... My windows Main Studio PC is only here, because there was no good deal on Mac Studio that time - and I wanted to build (DiY) some things...and maybe upgrade the Ram/graphics for DeepLearning things...but the haters will always hate and I always try to show what are the best things in both worlds - for some musicians/creators maybe the freeware situation is still an advantage + upgrading paths...(what really isn't necessary when having the "right amount" of Mac Studio - its awesome what raw power and efficiency comes with Apple Silicon)
If apple priced their products competitively then there would be no Pc vs Mac fan boys. Used PC for 15 years before switching to mac for 13 years. Couldn’t imagine going back. Great video discussion/review. Welcome to the club mate.
Great review. Thank you👍🏼🤩 I love to get me a Mac Studio M2 Ultra with at least 128gb ram and 4tb ssd, But... I'm saving money for it for 2 yrs already. I think 2 more years I hopefully will be able to finally buy this great configuration. To get 5k euro together in my situation is hard. But I will buy my Mac for sure. Apple is just so ridiculous expensive but I know it's worth it to get myself a stable system in my music studio. Atm I'm stucked with a pc Windows 10 on a i5 AMD 32gb ram, serveral hdd's. Meh... purchased in 2016. 🤐 It's not fun and I didn't even mention about latency. Ableton Live 10 needs so much more love, but I just can't yet... If I had not my bad medical conditions, I still have a great job and save money faster this way hellyeah💪🏼 I would have my Mac studio m2 ultra already. Priority's as a father has to be made, so I become on the 4th place. But I WILL go for it. Thx for the great review. It motivates me for continuing the saving 😂 Peace out, m8✌🏼😎
I empathise. I switched back in 2002 when OSX first came out. I took one look at it and decided instantly that it would be worth it. One week later, I knew more about the Unix architecture than I even did about Windows or DOS. Never looked back. Given the size of your studio, this seems to have gone pretty well : )
Yeah, the UNIX underpinnings really sold it for me back around that time too. OSX (MacOS) really do combine the quality desktop environment and under the hood unix geeky stuff. Its funny, that many Linux geeks dont even realise that MacOS is actually a certified UNIX:
Congrats on your transition to the Mac! I was a PC user, got nerdy, swapped this card or installed that chip...fun for awhile, until it wasn't. I then copped a MacBook Pro in 2011, upgraded in 2013 due to a hardware issue via warranty replacement (AppleCare, baby!) and did not look back. But the Intel gotchas got annoying, especially on hot days when it feels like it should work, but the fans kicked in and my laptop ended up throttling. With Apple silicon, it really was a game changer; no more throttling or system overload, really quiet, super efficient and fast. I have a 14" M1 Max MBP,, 64GB memory, 4TB SSD. I'm a DJ and producer, and also at times make video content, so like you, I was willing to pay more for the convenience (goodbye, offloading sample and other libraries to an external SSD). I have a CalDigit TS4, a 16-port powered USB hub, and even an Apple Studio Display, and all....ALL...of the peripherals and devices I have connected works. I just wanted to focus on creating instead of figuring out tech. Not to say that figuring out tech isn't fun or challenging at times, but I'm fine skipping the DIY computer building route....been there, done that. Thanks for sharing your insights on your journey; hope you get tons of mileage from your Mac Studio! Peace.
Thank you so much for diving so deeply into your experience! I think I'll be switching to Mac after also using Windows for production for the last 15 years myself.
I had a 2700k. That thing was a beast. It kept up with a demanding workload for 8 years. I finally replaced that machine in 2019 and made the switch to Mac. I'm happy with my choice.
@@SamHocking maybe if using mac OS it would be... hackintosh rocks! ... but as long as windows is used, audio workflow is greatly impeaded and much of the same functions require far more lines of code and therefore much less efficient use of energy despite the speed on paper. Just look at the installer size of ProTools on mac and pc... very different! I've noticed the same trend, where the mac programs typically use less hard drive space for the same program, so we can assume there's less lines of code and/or less steps to perform the same tasks. Mac's operating systems just feel like they're better thought-though during the dev phase, and they also behave a lot more predictably. I love waking up with the same computer every day for years.... no need to "upgrade", and "auto update" turned off. It's simply bliss... (im running i7700k and mix huge sessions with zero threat to the CPU). So, in that my PC was built in 2016 and OSX breathed new life into it to the extent to where I have no need to mess with it... I'd say the operating system is quite a bit better-suited for audio stuff... I used to build new PCs like every two years! I don't think I ever built one that didn't ague with protools to some extent.
First of all: Best of luck and may it NEVER fail you! Love your content! Once you start using AirDrop there's no going back.... Just like time evolved with PC vs Mac issues now it's iPhone vs Android. I think for your business it now makes even more sense to go to iPhone because you can do your videos with superior quality on your phone and edit them and render them BLAZING fast on your M2. I have been on the Mac platform for almost 20 years - everything you said is very true but I would make sure the backups are being made very regularly. The biggest problem with the closed platform nowadays is that ALL of your data on the Mac (laptop or mini/studio) is encrypted by a dedicated chip. If that fails - the data is gone. Replacements outside of the warranty are ludicrous for those issues so they kinda force you to pay for additional coverage... All the best!
I've built PC's since the late 90's and quit after ~2018 after buying a used 2013 MBP to try out ($600) Now I run like five M1/2's for video and music. Never building a computer again. No advantage anymore. Mac's are truly plug and play.
Been Mac with music + Logic since 2007...It's super convenient for everything music related and makes getting ideas out of your head and recorded as fast and easy as possible. Also, everything just seems plug n play with Mac...at least within Logic...hardware or software...it just works.
Planning on switching too. I am dealing with the same USB issues as I have so many peripherals connected. Just waiting for the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips which are coming in the fall apparently.
@@GingerDrums Hey, I get that. For me. It’s more to do with future proofing and being eligible for software updates and support years down the line. Apple can be quite aggressive at times. For example, the 2017 macs no longer receive updates. Only 7 years old! The M1 machines are already almost 4 years old and the M2 Pro and Max systems are already at least 2 years old. The hope is they will support their silicon a lot longer than the intel stuff they did but you never know. I don’t want to be upgrading my Studio machine for at least 5-7 years after it was purchased.
@@GingerDrums This is incorrect. You're probably talking about the video by James Zhan. His test methodology is super skewed toward showing that the M1 is better. The newer Pro Tools versions are able to utilize performance AND efficiency cores. The only issue comes with the M3, which has slightly less memory bandwidth (but still high enough not to make any practical difference with audio).
@@GingerDrums That video frustrates me to no end, you're good lol. He compared the M1 with 8 performance cores vs M2 and M2 processors with fewer than 8 p cores, even though ones with 8 p cores exist! It's a valid concern for lots of other DAWs that don't utilize efficiency cores.
Got a M1 Ultra Mac Studio recently and it's such a beast, it can handle anything I throw at it with ease. Also Core Audio is so much better than Asio4All. Congrats on the new system dude, what a beast!
Best MacOS feature for creatives - quick preview anything with ’spacebar’. Amazing for quickly browsing through samples in folders, photos, readme .txts, excel sheets or basically anything.
I did something similar only I built my PC 3 years ago and a few weeks ago decided to switch to an MBP. Loving it so far, everything is smooth and I have not been able to push it hard enough for the fans to kick in so it's dead silent in the studio.
I began a slow switch the beginning of this year... within a few weeks, my overbuilt PC got kicked out the room! My PC laptop was almost unusable when trying to work on a project. I'm standing by for the updated Mac Studio to release, but this M3 Max-equipped MBP is a beast!
Yup, I''ll gladly pay the higher price for an iPhone and Mac in return with no issues. It's the same reason why I only drive Toyota Camry's. Japanese cars are just better built and the quality is apples and oranges to American cars.
@@jeromejamies3641 Why? You can’t afford an iPhone. There’s 2 reasons why people bash iPhones. They can’t afford one or the can’t get the credit approval to finance one. There’s probably other reasons, but those are the 2 main reasons

@@F-Andre ive had my mac for 10 years and only now am i considering an upgrade. Never had a pc last that long without getting crippled with bugs and bloat.
@@Amusiastudio "Never had a pc last [10 years] without getting crippled with bugs and bloat" - And did the price of your PCs cost anywhere close to the price of your Mac? You can go a long way by choosing the right components. I'm typing this on an 11-year-old PC that cost just under $1,850 when I built it in 2013, and it still runs well. I'm not making any judgement on which is better (PC or Mac); I'm only pointing out that PCs absolutely can last 10 years and longer.
Bro. You need to configure the new PC in order to work perfectly for real time audio process. It took me weeks to find the right BIOS settings and custom undervolt/overclocking settings. Now my PC is dead silent, no cpu spikes, super stable and can handle 30% more of vsts.
The benefit of Macs: The “quality floor” is substantially higher. The benefit of PCs: You can both get a better system on an absolute basis and on a dollar-for-dollar basis… if you are willing to put the work in. In other words, if you just want something that works, Macs are a great option. Because of Apple’s integration and closed system, the floor is high. Things just work because Apple does the legwork for you. They make the choices for you. But if you want the best possible system, or the best system for the money, PCs are where you get that
The best possible system still depends on what you do with your computer. For example, there are Apple only software like Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro (which I use) where you can't run on a Windows machine. So no matter how good of a PC system you have, it won't matter if you can't work on it. Again, saving time and a lot of headache is worth going Mac for IMO.
Takes time to do the proper research, find parts and finally build the thing. Fun, but it costs time. I prefer the flexibility of the PC but I see the attraction of a turn-key system. As soon as you go off the beat path though, MacOS is just as finicky as Windows ever was. Then you have to rely on help from other users, which is what happened here. Both paths have their challenges. I picked mine just like everybody else.
The best possible system to me is one that works every time, looks like someone actually thought about the design so it doesn't look like shit and is intuitive to use, and is completely silent.
Got the Mac Studio M2 Max Chip & Have the same DigiCal hub & I have had it for a few months now and is running much better than my MacBook Pro 💻 BigUps for the Switch but the Storage & Memory space you have is way more than what I have though! All the Best with the new setup 👑👊🏿✊🏿✌🏿👑
$6k for a audio computer. Guess that's why Apple is worth Trillions. Yikes!. Just the upcharge on RAM alone keeps me away no matter how impressive the M chips are.
While I like Macs, after retiring, I just can't afford them. Much easier on the pocketbook just to keep a PC upgraded. I do still have a Mac Pro with a GTX 680. Running an older version of OSX so I won't have to retire the older versions of Final Cut Studio and Creative Produxction Suite I have. It mostly just sits waiting for me to do something creative. But mostly just do music now with the PC, Ableton, and my synth rack. Also video games, have more time to play them now, and PC is the better platform in that respect.
True. After 30 years on Mac, I say it's a good idea. Update only when you want (usualy 6 months after the launch of a new OS, after 3dr parties udate their products)
D, get into using Notes on your Mac. You can screenshot and paste mix info into folders. I have a ton of notes from pro's etc. All that is backed up automatically to the cloud.
My only problem with Windows is the USB issue you mentioned. If all you’re doing is engineer work that Mac is worth it for just working all the time peace of mind. As a hobbyist I couldn’t justify the price for those specs. But Apple hasn’t cracked the code to processing power = more heat issues, Apple just put systems in place to make sure their chips don’t max out. They don’t know more than Intel or AMD who have been doing this for decades. The other reason I stopped buying Macs is because my first Mac was a PowerPc that they discontinued which I lost money on. Apple will eventually discontinue M1 M2 and make you upgrade to M3 like they are doing with Intel Macs and like they did with PowerPC. You’d be lucky if that Mac is not obsolete in 5-6 years they way they move. Apple model is to make you buy their products every 1-2 years.
I personally know at least 10 or 12 professional facilities, not even just "studios" that run 10yo Macs still. I'm not sure how accurate that statement is.
Thanks for the interesting story and sharing your experiences. I changed from PC to a Mac some month ago. I also had to spend some money. But now sometime later, I’m not regretting it. I also had to learn the Mac OS workflow, since it’s in some aspects it’s way different to a PC. But now I like the Mac a lot. Just works, is very fast and very reliable. For me there is no way back. And by the way, big thanks again: I appreciate it a lot that I can learn so much from you in your videos about mixing mastering. Also, your way of explaining things and your pronunciation is very good. Important for me, cause I’m not a native English speaking person. But with you, I understand every single word, merci!
I was a hardcore Windowssystem user for all of my PC-life. Build every Tower my own. Working on the creative side of things (Graphics, music and cutting). I switched. Not one moment of regret! No comparison how smooth things are running. With the ARMs CPUs the tides have changed.
I’m having my backup harddrives replaced with NVMe4.0 M2 drives running in raid 2 so I have fast and very safe backups now. Still running on a Mac Mini but everything works flawlessly. I was thinking about building a new pc but after rebuilding a pc for my daughter I think I will stay on Mac for now, the whole Windows setup and drivers is a pain in the ass. 😊
One thing that you’re gonna love is when you actually need to upgrade the Mac in about five years you’ll still be able to sell it and make money towards your next Mac. Welcome to the fold David!
Swings and roundabouts. You have to upgrade more frequently in an Apple ecosphere to keep from falling off Apples depreciation/obsolescence cliff. As Macs are generally quite a bit slower for the same investment cost than X86 systems it's unavoidable you will be spending more money in Apples business model. I use both Silicon and X86. Silicone for mobile / less demanding work, X86 for simply getting through more processing faster and more upgradable.
@@joshuakincheloe Sure, but I'm guessing like me, you upgraded to Silicon because Apple dropped OS support on their X86 hardware. This is my point, you can still use audio plugins and software from the 90s on Microsoft or Linux X86 systems.

I switched from PC to Mac in January of this year. The quietness of the Mac is just unbelieveable coming from PC - SOOOOO quiet! I was a Cubase user but have switched to Logic Pro after having a shot of the trial!
I couldn't disagree more with everything said in this video. 15 years of professional mixing on Windows (in my studio) and Mac (different studios) - never going to use Mac in my place.
You disagree... With what? I wonder if you guys even watched the video. You did 15 years of professional mixing on Windows? Wow cool, I did 20. And if you watched the video you'd know I said I didn't have any issue up until now. Things change, Intel is a mess, Mac right now is by far the best choice.
@@mixbustv Of course I watched the video. Your issues with USB etc were just your issues. I have even more USB devices and all work flawlessly. Intel is a mess at this moment, but AMD CPUs work very, very well. I'll be upgrading to 9950x as soon as it's out. M2 Ultra can barely compete with 7950x.
It’s not just about raw power-it’s about efficiency. Macs are designed with incredible optimization, which is why they’re so efficient. Unlike Windows, which has to cater to countless peripherals and configurations, macOS is built to run seamlessly on a more controlled hardware ecosystem. This efficiency means Macs don’t need things like water cooling to perform at a high level. Another big advantage is how macOS handles long-term performance. On Windows, you often need to tweak settings, edit the registry, or install third-party apps to keep things running fast. Even then, Windows systems tend to slow down over time and often need to be reinstalled every couple of years. With macOS, you don’t face those same issues it just works. When it comes to transitioning between devices, macOS makes it effortless. With iCloud, you can easily transfer all your data to a new Mac, no headaches. And as for storage, even on devices like the Mac Studio, you have the option to upgrade storage, so that shouldn’t be seen as a limitation. In short, Macs prioritize efficiency, reliability, and ease of use, making them an excellent choice for those who value a seamless experience. Said by a computer mechanic myself the mac is a better choice for most people specially for music production. Also another big deal that apple fixing their software all the time windows has many problems for years which haven’t been fixed yet. On mac when you report a problem 90% of the time the developers will look after it. I love Pc/Windows tweaking, but you gotta be honest with yourself when it comes to making money your rig is a part of money making you cannot just simply take days fixing problems caused by windows. Also windows update is a mess too. Windows 11 looks very similar too macOS do you think is not funny that everyone copies them? It is for a reason. There are many things where the PC or windows shines like gaming for example but for work mac is the go. Unless you teach AI or some specific use cases. And looking at how macs are evolving I’m pretty sure gaming will come closer and closer by time passing by.
I used PC's forever but when they came up with the MAC Studio I caved and bought one and to be perfectly honest about it It's awesome. There are a few things I wish were different but all in all I'm sold.
Welcome to the brighter side of computer force! I made a switch 10 or so years ago after making my windows laptop a hackintosh. It gave me over 25% performance boost on literally the same hardware so there were no other choice for me ;) since then - no computer issues at all! BTW have you consider a NAS server to handle storage instead of all that external hard drives? it is in general a much more reliable solution
This is kind of misleading, as the issues are Intel-based. AMD does not have these issues. Be aware: Mac OS updates are death for plugins, as Apple does not give plugin devs the opportunity to update the plugins before they release the OS.
Noone on a hot production system updates his OS immediately after release. Just wait a few days (or weeks) and let the developers their time to fix everything. So simple.
Misleading? Did you watch the video at all or you just just read the title? Because I repeat, multiple times in it, that the issue is with Intel. So how it this misleading? Also, just so you know, some AMD have the same TB issue. And also, it doesn't matter what processor you use you ain't gonna have a PC more quiet than the Mac
@@mixbustv Yes, I watched the video, and I was referring to for instance when you compare USB-ports, "pc vs Mac". USB-ports are strictly motherboard-related, and Intel vs AMD chipsets, and pc-builder enthusiasts make sure to buy motherboards that support all the equipment you own and futureproof what you may buy in the future. A simple motherboard-swap will cost you about 150$. This is from the perspective of a pc-building hobby-level music producer. As you state; this is your dayjob. A studio-computer is a tool in your world, and paying extra for tools that just works right out of the box is a no-brainer. 🙂
Congrats on the switch. Looks like a few people mentioned this, but you can use command option V to move whatever you want to whatever location you are focused on.
at the radio studio where I have working for 20+ yrs, we were on Mac, from a 3.1 power PC, that was only the recording unit on the 8 logic, everything was analogue equipment, to the latest update a couple of years ago the M1 mac mini which for our radio projects is more than enough. now I have a studio full of equipment covered with dust because plugins are so powerful and so easy to use. but I remember my mate's studio problems with windows. he was always messing with the system going slower and slower with time, due to registry faults that are accumulating over time, also the second problem was the viruses, almost to panic. every client came with its own USB stick that he was running through a laptop with one antivirus, then to another PC with another antivirus before plugging it into his working machine. he was reinstalling the whole system several times a year because it was impossible to use until he got pissed, and got the Mac OS Leopard!!!!! installed on his PC, then sometime later bought his own first Mac. old times stories but stick to the topic...)))) congrats on the transition!!!
As mentioned by other commenters, the safest bet in regards to OS updates is to leave it at least a version behind; it can often take some software (and/or hardware) developers up to 10 months to catch up to a new Mac OS. When I was running both a Mac and a Windows computer simultaneously, my saving grace for transferring and backing up files on external hard drives were a couple of programs from Paragon Software -- NTFS for Mac, and HFS+ for Windows (plus a version for the older Mac filing system). These enabled me to easily mount drives, regardless of how they were formatted, on either OS and seamlessly use them as normal. Always made switching computers a breeze.
Given that you love the Cmd+Space shortcut - which I also use 500x a day - it's good to know that sometimes Mac's go a bit crazy with the indexing of the spotlight search. My Mac has on several occasions gotten stuck in some kind of indexing frenzy where it eats up 90% of CPU power permanently while trying to index your hard drive, and one one occasion it literally forgot everything. Both times the answer is to Google how to shut down and reset the spotlight indexing and it fixed it. Good to keep in mind if your machine at any point feels like it's losing power and you're not running any software.. it might be the spotlight going ga-ga.
Well I can't comment to much on this video other than on the Mac side, as I have never used a Windows PC for running Pro Tools (which is the only DAW I've ever used and currently care to use). But I absolutely agree with all that you said about the Mac. I just upgraded from an old iMac to an M1 not long ago and was amazed at the efficiency, speed and noise! Of course I wish I would have paid for a little more SSD, but you just gave me some things to think about to expand all my memory. Thanks bro. And excellent video! Welcome to the Mac world (fyi, I also do not have an i-phone and use a droid with no issues connecting).
The work around for cutting a file on mac is: (command c) =Copy and then (command +option + v) = cutting the file from it's original location and pasting it to the new location. Cheers
Solid discussion. Been a Mac guy since 1986, though I dabble with PC's and have built a couple Hackintoshes. Bought a M2 Max MacBook Pro last year and it's easily the best Mac I've ever had... able to do serious work on the go or hooked to my studio rig with one Thunderbolt cable. Also, one must have utility is ChronoSync.
You can actually cut files on mac using "command x" and select the target file. Also, here is a good tip: do not install new updates or upgrade to a new OS immediately when it's released,. Instead, wait for go-ahead from your various software and plugin developers before making a move. Do not regret switching to mac.
You can CUT on a Mac. Copy the file (command+c) then paste it using option+command+v and it will delete the file on its original location.
Thanks! Did not even knew that :D
Was about to say that! I think this is way more intelligent than using CTRL+X bc you can decide what you want to do with the file when you are at the destination directory and not have to decide before copying / cutting
What i do is just hold alt and drag the file to wherever i want it to be . Much faster and efficient
🤓 Can also option + right click to show the "move" command in the context menu. I also discovered that recently despite having used Macs & Windows for decades.
I never knew that
Most important:
I second this 🙏🏼
Yes, That's good advice. I always wait for about 6 months to update system OS to allow for that. Been on Mac since the early 90's and have I have lost almost no working time to computer error. Also never had an internal HD fail or any hardware fault...so far.
I update to last macOS before the release of the new one! 🤭 Just updated to Sonoma. Usually in Jun-Jul I update!
@@fuTuRo-Sonic The only time I lost work time was due to an Apple security update that bricked my machine.
You're an exception.
One good story, I've heard more horror stories... also if its going to cost me the price of a new machine in parts... I'll buy a new machine.

Finally! Congrats for the transition
My mac literally showed up via fed ex the VERY HOUR of the solar eclipse!
I switched from pc to mac about 10 years ago. Nothing wrong with either. For music production it made more sense for me.
Welcome to the Mac ☺️
It’s still funny to see people enjoying the switch from PC to Mac 😁
I think your square, cheap Samsung SSD is one of the slowest. I suggest you considering the Samsung NVMe ones-they’re double the speed.
The internal SSD is so expensive because it’s a 40gb/s drive s, while the fastest external drives achieve around 20 Gb/s (even if are sold at 40gb/s)
David, of course, you can cut files 😁, but it’s called “move” instead of “cut.” Just move a file while holding the command key on the keyboard. You’re welcome ☺️
The search function is awesome!
I'm switching also.
Why update the OS in studio enviroment? For better Wallpapers, A.I. Mail response, etc..? As you said, you use the studio computer only for ProTools.
So I am still on PC for 1-2 years but time will tell, may be I will switch to Apple.
i just got a new m2 mac and the fan is dead quiet, LOVE IT. even the base mini is pretty snappy for small projects
Hi David,
An interesting video.
Thank you!
Storage is a huge issue with Macs today .
The most Horrendous issue is that they chose to solder all SSDs on the motherboards since 2016. I wish bad stuff happens to them so they learn to stop doing that
How so?
@@bridgestreetdesign - lack there off, unless you willing to pay extorntionate prices for internal storage
I've been using an AMD ryzen platform for audio for years no problem.
Recently switched myself, and you can Cut on Mac! Instead of Pasting with Cmd + V, push Option + Cmd + V
I learned something today, thank you !
Hey David! My heart goes out to you man! I don’t have the set up you do by a long shot, but the frustrations (insert your own phrase) no matter what level, we all have our ups and downs with gear. If there’s anything positive about it, it’s that you find the community (eventually) that gets us to the next gear. Rock on!
Apple was not immune to similar fuckups with their macbook pros a few years ago. New processors saved their ass.
Yep
Also most important, thank you for years of valuable information 🤘🏼
Thank you👍🏼🤩
I love to get me a Mac Studio M2 Ultra with at least 128gb ram and 4tb ssd, But...
If I had not my bad medical conditions, I still have a great job and save money faster this way hellyeah💪🏼
I would have my Mac studio m2 ultra already.
Priority's as a father has to be made, so I become on the 4th place. But I WILL go for it.
Thx for the great review. It motivates me for continuing the saving 😂
Peace out, m8✌🏼😎
also if your doing brig transfers sometimes its faster to just clone the drive in disk utility vs coping from one drive to the other
I empathise.
Great stuff... You're going to love it more and more. These Ultra Macs are amazing.
Welcome on Mac! Happy to having always worked on it for everything I do - not just music
I think I'll be switching to Mac after also using Windows for production for the last 15 years myself.
i hope this is a wake up call for intel and they finally start innovating like they used to from the days of the 2600k
I had a 2700k. That thing was a beast. It kept up with a demanding workload for 8 years. I finally replaced that machine in 2019 and made the switch to Mac. I'm happy with my choice.
@@TheChugMonkey yup, that thing was unreal, and the overclocking on it was incredible
Welcome my dear brother, I build PC’s and work as an audio engineer and the exact same thing happened to me 13 years ago…
13900KS has been steady so far on win 10. Going to use this as long as win 10 works.
13900 is the mac destroyer when it comes to audio, good choice.
@@SamHocking i suspect, programs which are initially programmed using Unix will never function as well in C++
@@steveburns6912 Maybe? Is Unix a common OS to develop C/C++ Audio applications to typically run on Windows and MacOS for audio though?

I've built PC's since the late 90's and quit after ~2018 after buying a used 2013 MBP to try out ($600)
Now I run like five M1/2's for video and music.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard you swear before haha. You won’t regret the change 🙌
You haven't been on the channel long enough, then. 😂

Finally! Welcome and Congratz!❤
Planning on switching too. I am dealing with the same USB issues as I have so many peripherals connected. Just waiting for the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips which are coming in the fall apparently.
Hey, the M1 benchmarks BETTER than the M2 or M3 on pro tools.
@@GC-nd1lp absolutely true! My bad and thanks for the updated info
Amazing for quickly browsing through samples in folders, photos, readme .txts, excel sheets or basically anything.
plan on switching soon also trev drop that magic app bro 😂😂😂
I did something similar only I built my PC 3 years ago and a few weeks ago decided to switch to an MBP. Loving it so far, everything is smooth and I have not been able to push it hard enough for the fans to kick in so it's dead silent in the studio.
You probably render these videos a lot faster than before too, so I am sure that is a big time saver for you now!
Speed is definitely noticeable, much more noticeable than any previous PC upgrade
Yeah.!! Yo can talk about Your video editor experience!! Thatas a hot new TH-cam video!
@@mixbustv David do you have a link for that keyboard you're using with your new mac studio ??
I began a slow switch the beginning of this year... within a few weeks, my overbuilt PC got kicked out the room! My PC laptop was almost unusable when trying to work on a project. I'm standing by for the updated Mac Studio to release, but this M3 Max-equipped MBP is a beast!
Once you go Mac or iPhone, you don’t go back. Best decision I ever made
Yup, I''ll gladly pay the higher price for an iPhone and Mac in return with no issues. It's the same reason why I only drive Toyota Camry's. Japanese cars are just better built and the quality is apples and oranges to American cars.

Congratulations David, it's a smart decision when dealing with audio for all the reasons you've mentioned....
Bro. You need to configure the new PC in order to work perfectly for real time audio process. It took me weeks to find the right BIOS settings and custom undervolt/overclocking settings. Now my PC is dead silent, no cpu spikes, super stable and can handle 30% more of vsts.
Did you miss the part in which I said I've been building and running PC in my studios for 20 years?
Yeap same here , did the same exact thing with my i7 14900 with my 96gb ram
Even though I can’t really do anything it’s frozen in 2014 but stable. My iMac is from 2011 and I can still use everything I need.
@@DystopianOwl
This is a video about computers for music production. I thought what “the best” means would have been pretty clear…
@@AironExTv
“Takes time… costs time.”
Yup. This is the entire point of when I talked about Apple making the choices for you.
Well said.
The best possible system to me is one that works every time, looks like someone actually thought about the design so it doesn't look like shit and is intuitive to use, and is completely silent.
Got the Mac Studio M2 Max Chip & Have the same DigiCal hub & I have had it for a few months now and is running much better than my MacBook Pro 💻

$6k for a audio computer. Guess that's why Apple is worth Trillions. Yikes!. Just the upcharge on RAM alone keeps me away no matter how impressive the M chips are.
When you do audio for a living...
@@mixbustv lol. of course.
TURN OFF AUTO UPDATE!!!!!!
OTHERWISE YOU WILL HAVE AN UNSTABLE SYSTEM!
@@mixbustv they can’t be updating the OS

True. I still have a pc for playing games on Steam. That’s all folks. 😅
@@SamHocking agree to disagree but keep swinging
My M1 system was purchased in 2020 and it still works just fine. I’ll talk to you next year when I upgrade.
@@joshuakincheloe Sure, but I'm guessing like me, you upgraded to Silicon because Apple dropped OS support on their X86 hardware. This is my point, you can still use audio plugins and software from the 90s on Microsoft or Linux X86 systems.
@@SamHocking nobody cares she is. We already went through that when we went from Motorola chips to Intel and now we’re moving on again. We’re not gonna switch architectures anytime soon as that was over 20 years ago. The thing about Mac users, his money is not the problem, we only care about stable platforms. When you do this for a living, it changes your perspective and at the end of the day the Mac is tax write off. so again, nobody cares. What will be nice those when he sells his Mac it’ll still be worth money unlike with an old PC. That’s my point.

Apple best for music.
Win 10-11 is crap.
Hope all continues as smooth as butter....(Just realised the delete / copy function was mentioned so edited)
Thank you!!
PLZ DO NOT UPDATE UR MAC OS IT'S
I used PC's forever but when they came up with the MAC Studio I caved and bought one and to be perfectly honest about it It's awesome. There are a few things I wish were different but all in all I'm sold.
Send it back!! ProTools on a Mac is terrible. The performance is a fraction of that on PC.
😂😂 you didn't watch the video. Also, I'm PT beta tester. PT on Mac (M1 and 2 and 3) is flawless
Just don’t update os until the next one comes out or everything works leave it. Mojave ran great on my 2012 mini

at the radio studio where I have working for 20+ yrs, we were on Mac, from a 3.1 power PC, that was only the recording unit on the 8 logic, everything was analogue equipment, to the latest update a couple of years ago the M1 mac mini which for our radio projects is more than enough. now I have a studio full of equipment covered with dust because plugins are so powerful and so easy to use. but I remember my mate's studio problems with windows. he was always messing with the system going slower and slower with time, due to registry faults that are accumulating over time, also the second problem was the viruses, almost to panic. every client came with its own USB stick that he was running through a laptop with one antivirus, then to another PC with another antivirus before plugging it into his working machine. he was reinstalling the whole system several times a year because it was impossible to use until he got pissed, and got the Mac OS Leopard!!!!! installed on his PC, then sometime later bought his own first Mac. old times stories but stick to the topic...)))) congrats on the transition!!!
Cheers

I've been using exactly the same machine you have with PT Ultimate HDX and AVID chassis. That thing is a beast.
