I run a red, blue, white non-creature spell deck and out of the 20 times I've played this deck, I've lost only once. The reason is this: apart from Gyruda, the deck is useless. I just counter/wipe everything on board and the deck fizzles out. I am getting sick of seeing it in ranked though.
Well since basically everyone runs counterspells right now to counter these big creatures... magic is less fun right now cause running counterspell decks is the worst... and ppl playing it are bad ppl :P
i did the same with dimir flash. You know you will facing gyruda before mulligan and for a counter deck is a good advantage. With a cry f the carnarium and a counter in hand you should have no fear. Once he tries to play gyruda ashiok erasure will hit the target and 9/10 is a scoop. Actually the best deck i faced so far was a blue white green control with teferi, nissa and tamiyo. Very hard to win against it.
The deck isn't great in best of three, which is the structure for all major tournaments, mostly due to grafdigger's cage and counters out of the sideboard. Even in best of one, pretty much anything playing counterspells, being the flash decks or control, all have pretty good matchups against this deck. Even lurrus decks can win if they're fast enough, so there are very few "free wins" with the deck, though it is admittedly quite good against the midrange decks of the format, which quite honestly seems healthy for the format, as nissa krasis decks were almost the entire format last season. If it were to get banned, I would guess it would due to a ruling on the companion mechanic rather than gyruda specifically.
Gyruda... the deck honestly like a bant ramp deck without it... Agent and Thassa is a pain but is still just another bant ramp deck...Gyruda makes the deck busted....
John Smith It’s so inconsistent though. It’s a garbage deck and I don’t see Gyruda being banned once the meta settles. There are so many ways to deal with it and you have several turns to prepare.

Play the budget cycle deck, leave 4 mana up, wait the mill then zenith flare. Done it a dozen times in the past couple of days, it never gets old. Also ive broken out the old hushbringer/kroxa/clackbringe deck that shuts down gyruda hard. Also got a new piece in ikoria with hunted nightmare, a 3 mana 4/5 with menace and no doenside thanks to hushy boi.
Hushbringer also stops those pesky Bentota-agent decks too....well least the agent triggers anyways. which is all that matters. Also, Extinction Event is a pretty good counter card for Black players as well. Since they will always have Even mana creatures out, and for the Bent versions of the deck it'll negate Luminous Broodmoth as well. I 've been using two myself in my Sultai version of the deck. Works great in mirror matches :D
@@Deathangel1919 I've been thinking of running a non-companion Gyruda deck that runs Agent. I lose the ability to always have him in my opening hand, but I could run four copies in the deck and not tip my hand to my opponent early on. For more janky players you can run Yarok the Desecrated as well for double triggers.
Just played a version of this deck.... Got Gyruda out, special summoned spark double, activated again, drew into another spark double did effect again, into another spark double. The guy scooped.
I usually shut down Gyruda decks with your Agent Winota deck (that's what I named it lol) everything 4 or less gets shutdown but I'll builds this one to try it out to see what's so great about the soon to be "banned" card
I don't understand how the Elite Guardmage survived at 14:04 because 6 damage should have killed both blocking creatures. I don't get why the damage was divided into 4 to the first blocker and 2 to the second. Can somebody enlighten me?
Leyline of the void and removal. Moved up four ranks against this and luris. And great against uro decks too. Sacrifice decks hate leyline. Basically it is modern now
Hanmacx true but I went five and one against the deck. Could be the pilot but it is also best of three. First game is tough second two are east. Playing Abzan chevill deck. Just a bunch of good removal and leyline lets you one for one until Nissa or garruk take over the game. It is real easy to just hold up removal on a six drop you know is coming while they kill over there back ups into exile. Just take out your even casting cost creatures play the hound and kethis
Hanmacx also beats all those sacrifice decks too gain life draw cards and they can’t replay creatures. Most of these new decks are only broken in best of one games
i think with how much counter spells are a thing again that Gyruda wont be banned..now Winota..she may get the ban hammer. i guess both these cards suffer from counters and dimir flash is on the rise.
@@OsvaldoChannel1 Agent will rotate in September so there is no real point in banning it now. The format is new and will most likely adjust itself to have 3 or 4 tier 1 and a bunch of tier 2 decks.
Deck is polarized because when it works it wrecks house but it gets sad vs flash and some aggro decks. It needs to ramp and take as little damage as possible. I’m trying to think of how to tweak mine to stay fast but have better game vs it’s bad matchups. Flash, Temur reclamation , control, some rdw builds, b/w Lurrus enchantress and a few others I have found have good tech vs the standard ramp Gyruda.
I agree.. Winota gets a lot of press but that's really only because agent is still around. THIS guy is way more consistent due to the companion mechanic and way more OP.
Too fast for the deck. Since they win in turn 5 and by that time their life total is either 0 or too low for them to catch up. Faced this deck 3 times and won 2 of them for having a really fast hand. Decent match up for mono red and for control and hence why I disagree with Joey with how busted it actually is
I like the Godzilla monster cards, and I sorta always hated Gigan because he made Godzilla bleed. But I think its cool that you use his card for a Skadooshly Stupidly Powerful Combo!
I have been having some pretty good success using a gruul deck based around proud wildbonder and quartzwood crasher. I added in mirror march to try and get a ton of things with trample while quartzwood is out to make a massive dinosaur

Hey Joey, what do you think about some sort of deck involving both Fiend Artisan along with the companion of choice being Lurrus of the Dream-Den? Maybe add some self mill to buff the Fiend Artisans and then following it up with Lurrus’s graveyard recursion? Seems like it would be an interesting build that would be a BLAST to play! I played against that deck with my Lutri Jeskai Control, and the game took forever, mostly because my opponent keeps sacrifice his creatures for more Lurrus and not attacking
Problem with having Lurrus as companion is it prevents you from running more than one. So if it's removed there goes the plan. I tried running a deck like that with Aid the Fallen and cards like that to get Lurrus back but it still isn't ideal
dan krocka I’ve been brewing and playing around with Sultai (fairly deep black) that just puts so much in the graveyard and recurs it that you can easily power through any counters or graveyard hate. Seems to work!

The winota agent deck DESTROYED this deck I just kept taking thier gyruda.. then thier polukranos then thier land then thier prince.. I think winota will be banned or agent. It’s so much fun right now though! Flying through ranked !
9:50 you could have exile his Kefnet, as it's already the end step he will get t back at the end of his own, wich mean he will not have it for the turn

Just for funsies, I built this deck. First match seemed to be designed against this deck. Lots of bounce and zero even cost critters. Opponent had me down to 1 life at one point, but Dream Trawler and bouncing an Elite Guardmage several times saved the day. Opponent conceded. He had the better board, but he was out of cards and I could have survived his attack. I still had a hand full of cards, three Gyruda in hand, Thassa on the field and a Dream Trawler on the field.
I like the thought of Dimir flash with Leyline of The void. Been messing with it a lot lately and haven’t lost to any deck like this the 3 times I’ve played it. Anyway, hope you’re doing good my ninja!
The bant version has an issue with ramping, not to mention can get counterpell easily, I run my own simic version, with the two mana 2/3 that makes your creature and enchantment un counterable (so funny to see a control deck watching me solo play) I run king Kong (to remove a threat and when it swings to kill any enchantment) usually I combo off by turn 4 around 80% of the time. But I run questing beast (can win games on its own while applying pressure against control or fires deck) gravedigger and hush decks on the other hand lol... but I don't think it will be banned because you have ways to negate te combo by playing gravedigger or hush. I'm currently brewing a new deck that will combo off with ookosh kind of a jund one turn sac gg
Thomas Wayne when a deck has ONLY one good counter the deck definitely needs to be looked at for bannings and this card is definitely one that needs a look at .. but in reality wizards doesn’t ban much that’s actually important or takes away the fun of magic so you probably are right. Broken decks like this aren’t fun to play against
Ever though about one or two thassa’s oracles? Its great anytime for this deck for the most part so you choose more or less what you want next and a few luminous broodmoths for extra etb effects and a flying gyruda
Try Dimir flash, even without Brazen Borrower it’s still pretty good. You can also play some Izzet decks built around Ominous Seas and Sprite Dragon, and when you get enough wildcards you can upgrade it to an Izzet Phoenix deck (I’m currently playing Phoenix and it’s being really great for me)
This is the reason why I am not assembling anything and I am waiting for the banlist. There is more than one card that they are going to ban, especially from the old editions that are still running. Once the cleaning is done and everything is balanced again personally I will arm myself some decks that I have in mind. Now talking about this combo, it's completely insane. + 75% winrate insured with this (I don't know if more ...)
Playing a mono-red borrow-and-sacrifice deck. It's not good enough to reach platinum easily, but it's brought me closer than any of my other junk decks.
i dont really think it will be banned. this deck loses to so much. especially with all the grafeyard and library hate in the meta currently. this deck faults to a 1 drop grafdiggers cage. not to say it is weak against stuff like removal and counter. the combo is nuts, but i dont think the deck as a whole is that great. really good, but not bannable. just my 2 cents.
No, the cards are not played from the graveyard, 4 cards go to the graveyard and then you select 1 card to put on the battlefield. The effect doesn't care where the cards go after they hit the graveyard so graveyard hate doesn't work. The one thing that does kills this deck is a board wipe
@@ChangBenson You are right, I thought Grafdigger's cage only prevented you from casting. Thinking about it more, Gyrdua decks also completely loses again esper control/the new dimir flash deck. There is no way you re getting out a Gyrdua before they have the mana for a counter spell

Gyruda is a bannable card for sure, but I think WotC well ignore it. It's a poster child of the companion mechanic, and it would look really bad to ban the only viable card with that mechanic. It also has to alternate art styles, which WotC can sell for more profit. And keep in mind, they have refused to ban Fires of Invention, which is even worse.
Love the deck not sure about ban hammer though. 4 drop extinction event exile all even Cmc cards on board. Also going jeskai to play winota seems interesting.
This deck right now seems super vulnerable to interaction from counterspells. Doesn't look bannable in its current form to me. It is a high power build so if it gets more tools to protect itself in the future, it could be bannable.
following up. I've won one out of the first 7 games with this deck. there is no real curve. I might just be unlucky. but I don't get enough ramp to play the combos before my opponents have an ace in the hole. Also it has no answers to the other borken plays in the game. It's really not as OP, relative to the other decks in the set. Jeskai Winota, Orzhov Sacrifice, even other version of this deck will consistently win.
Obviously everyone will have their opinions on the optimal list. As the meta has been settling I'm becoming more I'm favor of a heavy Sultai build that I splash white in minimally for Broodmoth. Sultai gives some removal, Extinction Event and Heartless, plus a much better Mana base. Fromy experience I think those positives outweigh the lower draw/cycle and healing that Bant gives.
Luckily my blue/white control deck can absorb or mystical dispute Gigan. Or even Elspeth although it would be too late to stop the new card. Ill just have to hold creature/planewalkers back to save mana.
Gyruda decks i been facing I haven't found them OP. Nearly every Gyruda deck I battled I won mainly when I use Winora, Simic, Mutate Orzitov Moth and Boros cycling (those are the new decks i been playing with the new set) . I just have too strong of a board by the time they cast gyruda with my board having deathtouch, removeral, several creatures for block and board wipe ready. And plus if they use it as their companion. I'm ready for it as it their entire deck is even based mana. Making some cards like teferi, Agent, Most counter spells and most removeral not used so I don't have to get around them like I would normally.
I'm not playing ranked (because i haven't found a deck i'd take to ranked) so i hadn't played against this deck yet. Yesterday i played against it on a quick match and i was absolutely destroyed by it, mostly because i did not know what the deck did, and when i realized how it worked it was already too late. Wiped the board a few times, exiled Thassa but it felt like the opponent had infinite Gyrudas. I considered stalling the game a bit more just to see the opponent decking out but i would probably deck out first, so eff it. Strong deck, runs like an engine, but yeah, it will see some bans edit: i was simply testing my Kaheera & Cat-tastic Friends, odds in my favor were already pretty low but i like the damn cats
I modified the "Out of blood" starter deck, it's pretty much deathlink + lifesteal, its okay, some of the heavy hitting decks wipe me before I can do anything though.

This deck makes U/W flyers with Hushbringer a viable deck. I have been having decent success with both this deck and U/W flyers, at least BO1.

I've been trying to make jund season of growth work using mutate on dreadhorde arcanist or dreadhorde butcher. It's ok but it still needs some work

Winota on her own is very powerful, but Agent is what breaks her, so i would just ban Agent but i can see Winota get the hammer instead

So I’m working on this Dimir deck Shark-Net. Solid counter spells creature removal. Needs more card draw. It’s meh. I’m almost gold tier 1

Winota is a great card, but she isn't broken. Agent of Treachery is the broken card. Ban that, and nobody will play Winota anymore.

I replaced dream trawler and umori with Justicars portal it made it so much easier to combo off.
I mostly play standard best of 3.

Companion cards are playable at all times if you meet the conditions, in this case its : Companion - Your starting deck contains only cards with even converted mana costs. (If this card is your chosen companion, you may cast is once from outside the game.)

Just for funsies, I built this deck. First match seemed to be designed against this deck. Lots of bounce and zero even cost critters. Opponent had me down to 1 life at one point, but Dream Trawler and bouncing an Elite Guardmage several times saved the day. Opponent conceded. He had the better board, but he was out of cards and I could have survived his attack. I still had a hand full of cards, three Gyruda in hand, Thassa on the field and a Dream Trawler on the field.

I like the thought of Dimir flash with Leyline of The void. Been messing with it a lot lately and haven’t lost to any deck like this the 3 times I’ve played it. Anyway, hope you’re doing good my ninja!
The bant version has an issue with ramping, not to mention can get counterpell easily, I run my own simic version, with the two mana 2/3 that makes your creature and enchantment un counterable (so funny to see a control deck watching me solo play) I run king Kong (to remove a threat and when it swings to kill any enchantment) usually I combo off by turn 4 around 80% of the time. But I run questing beast (can win games on its own while applying pressure against control or fires deck) gravedigger and hush decks on the other hand lol... but I don't think it will be banned because you have ways to negate te combo by playing gravedigger or hush. I'm currently brewing a new deck that will combo off with ookosh kind of a jund one turn sac gg
Thomas Wayne when a deck has ONLY one good counter the deck definitely needs to be looked at for bannings and this card is definitely one that needs a look at .. but in reality wizards doesn’t ban much that’s actually important or takes away the fun of magic so you probably are right. Broken decks like this aren’t fun to play against

Ever though about one or two thassa’s oracles? Its great anytime for this deck for the most part so you choose more or less what you want next and a few luminous broodmoths for extra etb effects and a flying gyruda
He has an earlier Bant Gyruda deck that is not a companion deck that has Broodmoth in it.

Is there any solid decks that aren't full of mythics? I wanna get higher in rank but its hard when ive got like 4 rares and 2 mythic wildcard
Try Dimir flash, even without Brazen Borrower it’s still pretty good. You can also play some Izzet decks built around Ominous Seas and Sprite Dragon, and when you get enough wildcards you can upgrade it to an Izzet Phoenix deck (I’m currently playing Phoenix and it’s being really great for me)
This is the reason why I am not assembling anything and I am waiting for the banlist. There is more than one card that they are going to ban, especially from the old editions that are still running. Once the cleaning is done and everything is balanced again personally I will arm myself some decks that I have in mind.
Now talking about this combo, it's completely insane. + 75% winrate insured with this (I don't know if more ...)

Playing a mono-red borrow-and-sacrifice deck. It's not good enough to reach platinum easily, but it's brought me closer than any of my other junk decks.
i dont really think it will be banned. this deck loses to so much. especially with all the grafeyard and library hate in the meta currently. this deck faults to a 1 drop grafdiggers cage. not to say it is weak against stuff like removal and counter. the combo is nuts, but i dont think the deck as a whole is that great. really good, but not bannable. just my 2 cents.
No, the cards are not played from the graveyard, 4 cards go to the graveyard and then you select 1 card to put on the battlefield. The effect doesn't care where the cards go after they hit the graveyard so graveyard hate doesn't work. The one thing that does kills this deck is a board wipe
@@DDDHunter Grafdigger's cage says that creatures in graveyards can't enter the battlefield though, wouldn't that shut down Gyruda?
@@ChangBenson You are right, I thought Grafdigger's cage only prevented you from casting. Thinking about it more, Gyrdua decks also completely loses again esper control/the new dimir flash deck. There is no way you re getting out a Gyrdua before they have the mana for a counter spell
@@DDDHunter I've run both a Bent Version and a Sultai version of Gyruda and honestly think without Spark Double it would be a decently balanced deck.

I've beaten this deck with control, and Graveyard Interaction Hate....., but the deck is a blast to run, if you hit your land drops...

Gyruda is a bannable card for sure, but I think WotC well ignore it. It's a poster child of the companion mechanic, and it would look really bad to ban the only viable card with that mechanic. It also has to alternate art styles, which WotC can sell for more profit. And keep in mind, they have refused to ban Fires of Invention, which is even worse.
It won't be banned. In a Bo3 this deck is fragile.
I had my first experience listening to a power >5 creature hitting a player in that intro... sounded epic.
Love the deck not sure about ban hammer though. 4 drop extinction event exile all even Cmc cards on board. Also going jeskai to play winota seems interesting.

Gigan is the card normal name, gyruda is for the kaiju version ( Godzilla & friends)

I managed to win against this deck, but Giruda didn't hit any creatures, and then met my Murdering Rider
This deck right now seems super vulnerable to interaction from counterspells. Doesn't look bannable in its current form to me. It is a high power build so if it gets more tools to protect itself in the future, it could be bannable.
Yea play it a lot counter eats it alive and gravedigger cage and it's done and sometimes aggro just eats it to good deck but very beatable
Destiny Spinner protects Gyruda and its a 2/3 creature for 2cc👍🏼👍🏼😎
There’s a version with Uro slotted as backups that adapts to the counter meta. Give it a few weeks. This one’s a goner.
I've lost consistently with this deck. It's not fast enough and somehow I haven't gotten the thassa/gyruda combo out once.
following up. I've won one out of the first 7 games with this deck. there is no real curve. I might just be unlucky. but I don't get enough ramp to play the combos before my opponents have an ace in the hole. Also it has no answers to the other borken plays in the game. It's really not as OP, relative to the other decks in the set. Jeskai Winota, Orzhov Sacrifice, even other version of this deck will consistently win.

As the meta has been settling I'm becoming more I'm favor of a heavy Sultai build that I splash white in minimally for Broodmoth.
Sultai gives some removal, Extinction Event and Heartless, plus a much better Mana base. Fromy experience I think those positives outweigh the lower draw/cycle and healing that Bant gives.
I am running Jeskai Fires, I am working on a Kaheera Deck, and I am running a Keruga, the Macrosage Fires...
Luckily my blue/white control deck can absorb or mystical dispute Gigan. Or even Elspeth although it would be too late to stop the new card. Ill just have to hold creature/planewalkers back to save mana.

Which cards would you remove to add agent of treachery? Imagine doubling Gyruda then using agent to scoop the opponents threat!

4x Lava coil seems pretty good against this, maybe for the paradise druid? it exiles which is nice
Gyruda decks i been facing I haven't found them OP. Nearly every Gyruda deck I battled I won mainly when I use Winora, Simic, Mutate Orzitov Moth and Boros cycling (those are the new decks i been playing with the new set) . I just have too strong of a board by the time they cast gyruda with my board having deathtouch, removeral, several creatures for block and board wipe ready. And plus if they use it as their companion. I'm ready for it as it their entire deck is even based mana. Making some cards like teferi, Agent, Most counter spells and most removeral not used so I don't have to get around them like I would normally.

I faced this deck twice today and was surprised I won both times. I had god-draws and they ramped too slow but my sacrifice barely won twice!
I'm not playing ranked (because i haven't found a deck i'd take to ranked) so i hadn't played against this deck yet. Yesterday i played against it on a quick match and i was absolutely destroyed by it, mostly because i did not know what the deck did, and when i realized how it worked it was already too late. Wiped the board a few times, exiled Thassa but it felt like the opponent had infinite Gyrudas. I considered stalling the game a bit more just to see the opponent decking out but i would probably deck out first, so eff it.
Strong deck, runs like an engine, but yeah, it will see some bans
edit: i was simply testing my Kaheera & Cat-tastic Friends, odds in my favor were already pretty low but i like the damn cats
The biggest issue is, it's not interactive. Unless you play tons of counter, you can't do anything

I modified the "Out of blood" starter deck, it's pretty much deathlink + lifesteal, its okay, some of the heavy hitting decks wipe me before I can do anything though.
