    Hi Mattias, I using bitwig over my iPad. It works fine for one hour . Right now I got a big issue I can't control knobs and fader anymore. I can't drag and change the values of the fader and knobs .. everything else works good .. but this is a big issue .. do you know if this is a bug or did I something deactivated. Hi Sohum. Audio Recording (guitar, mic etc.) that go via audio inputs should be set as audio tracks in Bitwig Studio. If on PC check the regular controls and see that you get audio input from the laptop mic. Be sure to set Bitwig settings to use the internal laptop audio interface for input ad Output.

    Hello Mattias. THanks for the vid. Iwanted to say that you explained how to use Collections , NOT Smart Collections. The Difference is simple.
    A Collection is like a folder full of references/pointers to other things/devices which you can manually add and remove. Its content only changes when you manally add/ remove stuff from it. Adding and removing can easily happen by rightclicking your collection and seting it as target, then whenever you click a start or unclick it ( next to a device in the browser) it will add/remove it from the current target collection. You can also of course drag and drop it like you do in your video.
    The Smartcollection is a list of everything that you have + a filter-rule that you define. That rule will be applied to the list of "everything" resulting in a smaller list which contains only elements that fit in the rule you defined. e.g a rule might be "tag=bass or tag="synth". Whenever you create a new alement and tag it bass or synth it would be "added" to the list automatically, becuase it is simply a filtered list.

    I came here going to say, "hey, mention the middle mouse for navigation".... boom! ;) For me, it's a killer feature and one of the reasons I left Live with the scroll boxes. Navigating in Bitwig is FAST.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it sure is fast to work and navigate in. That's what I wanted to present in this video. Though I still think the two separate quantise settings is weird and I guess many people will scratch their heads when they setup the grid view and when pressing Q, quantise is totally wacky. You need to press Alt-Q to setup the key command quantise setting. It doesn't make sense to me. They should both be set to the same grid setting so we don't have to set it up twice every time we want to have different grid settings. Thanks for writing!

    Great video. I was looking for this. Mattias, quick question. Building new PC for music only. I like to run Bitwig and browser at the same time to watch tutorials. Do you think 16MB RAM would be enough to comfortably run both programs or should I get 32MB? I have 8 now and it's always full. (I do not use instrumentals in Bitwig, just mostly stock stuff).

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi always go for as much RAM as possible. 16GB is fine if you don't add million of sample libs as the same time, but I would go 32GB.. Or go 16 you can always add more later.
      For stock 16GB is fine.

      @@MattiasHolmgren Thanks. That helps a lot. Last question. 4 core cpu 4 threads or 4 core 8 threads? How Bitwig uses threads? 4 is OK or it's better to get 8 threads. (Ryzen 3200G or 3400G).

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You only need to worry about the cores. The more the merrier. Threads refers to the virtual component which manages tasks.
      My experience is that Bitwig spreads nicely on cores. Multithreading is handled nicely. For third party plugins it depends on how the developer program and utilized to spread tasks on threads. I've coded multi thread tasks (AI) when I coded the iOS game Luminati. Without threading the fps would disrupt/freeze when AI was calculating. So it depends on the tasks if a developer choose to open a separate thread to a demanding task.
      Hope the info helps.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @hgaubaul
      @hgaubaul 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MattiasHolmgren I do like the orange, but the dirty brown colour I'm not a fan of. Hopefully in the future they give us the option of another theme of the option to change it.
      And also the option to give the clip the different colors in the arranger track instead of the whole track. This way it's easy on the eyes at night.

    Any chance you can do a series on a single song? From setting up the template to composing, recording, mixing, and mastering beginning to end? Sometimes its hard to piece it all together in bits where one video may be logically after another, but its a different project and often theme.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, yeah that would be quite the project and I’ve been thinking about it. The Bitwig Basics series is more of a ”getting to know the DAW functionalities” and I create suitable musical material for each event / occasion. I have a few composing videos but not a whole set of videos where I work on the same track in multiple episodes from start to finish (pre-production to final mastering and sending to streaming platform). I will sketch on such a series. Thanks for the suggestion.

    What's the purpose of having two separate grid settings? I feel like there should just be one. Extra menus and clicking seems unnecessary?
    Thanks for the tutorials btw! Really clearly explained.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Delusi, yeah there's not that big a difference from the two Poly Grid and FX Grid. It seems it's all about the basic default layout. In the FX Grid you have audio input and output pre-setup. While in the Poly Grid you have a triangle osc and envelope pre-setup. But you can add audio-input in any Grid. ;) So it's just about the pre-defined setup. But of course it makes sense to boot up the Poly Grid if you are designing an instrument patch. And load up the FX Grid if you want to design audio processing unit.
      That said the Poly Grid also sports a NoteFX insert chain-slot, while the FX Grid have a pre-FX chain-slot.
      So that's the main difference between the two "Grids" which aside from this is basically the same.
      I'm not bothered by having them both, it's easy to just load up the Grid plugin you need for either creating an instrument or an FX device.
      Happy to hear you enjoy my videos. ;D

  • @aclexvideo
    @aclexvideo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for another portion of quick tips, Mattias! As I said for the previous episodes, even with most popular functions it's not unusual to miss something and know something new from tutorials :) My today additions are different tabs in the right side of the main window - used only Browser page from there, while Project and Plugin pages are also quite handy, and things related quantization. I use quantization quite often, also with modified parameters, but never noticed, there're two types of them.
    Side note to that I wanted to mention is that I actually don't like things related to grid in editor. For example, the most confusing thing for me is, how it's called officially, white selection area, which appears as you select notes. It's so often, that I try to resize a note and in fact resize this area. Or I want to resize one note, but it resizes a group of notes, just as this white area somehow survived my click on the blank area. And several other corner cases I can't now remember, but which try to spoil my joy using Bitwig :) I agree, it's apparently things to get used to and learn, I also agree, that the selection box is important for some of use cases, but, well, when the behaviour is conter-intuitive it's usually treated like usability flaw, rather than the user's flaw. Surely, DAW isn't type of programs, which one can do particularly easy and intuitive to use, but still…
    So yes, thanks again for revisiting all these little things, and all the power for the just started week to you!

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Alexey! Yeah that ”white selection area” functionality takes some time to get used to. Its all about learning to select from the top of a track or at the bottom of the track. LOGIC also included a similar solution and the reason is to save us from using too many key commands just for editing. So it’s for a good reason but demands more from the user since you have to be sure to press the mouse in the correct area of the track.
      Thanks again for nice constructive feedback. Have a splendid start of your week Alexey. Here was had quite the storm today with thunder, lightning and crushing rain but it only lasted for a bit. Aside from that it was pool weather so I took the kids for a swim. Cheers, Matt
