Interesting. However... I don't watch much of the CSI-type shows. I did watch Bones and Dexter (both of which do focus on forensics) but I always question those. Bones, I've found, was very accurate. Still don't quite understand blood spatter (from Dexter). But I do watch shows like FBI Files, New Detectives and Forensic Files, all of which only use real cases and the real methods used to solve crimes. In those, bite marks can sometimes (provided the biter has a distinctive enough bite) be used to prove a case. Of course, the most famous was the Ted Bundy case. Having some experience with computers, thank you for pointing out that computers can enhance photos to the degree they always seem to in fiction. That always irritated me. I would often think, "where are these computers? I want that kind of enhancement for my work!" LOL! And as for the time lines-- oh, yes! Only in the FBI Files do they show how long it can take to process and work out a case... sometimes years! Every other show, including Forensic Files skips out the weeks and months it can take to get results-- simply because that bit of analysis is sitting in line, waiting for all the cases before it.

Those old enhance scenes might not have been possible int he past, but now we have Artificial Vision technology that is capable of doing much more standard pixel interpolation. You can go look up papers on current image enhancing AI and it is pretty much on the level of a lot of the scenes on those shows. Of course, some of it will always be fiction, like the ones where you can identify the suspect on the reflection of sunglasses.
But today's enhancing image tech is quite remarkable.
