  • I couldn’t believe it when I first saw this on Twitter, but researchers at the University of Otago and out of the UK have created an interlocking magnet device that attaches to your teeth and prevents you from opening your mouth more than 2mm, restricting you to a liquid diet. This theoretically helps you lose weight. It’s real, and I had to speak up.

Are you eating in a campus cafeteria or preparing your own food? If possible, I would recommend the second, unless you are eating with friends and this would isolate you socially. Being heavy doesn't mean much on its own, but if your cholesterol is bad or your having trouble walking up the stairs, for example, it may be necessary to make ajustments to diet or lifestyle.
I think of body weight like internal temperature. Its one of many measurements you can take to get an overall idea of how someone's doing, but it doesn't tell the whole story. Some people do just run hot. For some, 99°F is just their normal internal temperature, but if a person who usally measures out a 98°F clocks 99.5°F, it's probably a good idea to investigate why.

I was worried there for a moment, Mike 😅 Thank you for being a professional that says there is more to your health than just weight. ❤
I've always been overweight, and it's the only thing I've heard constantly regardless of why I go in. Always ended with 'you can stand to lose some weight'
Now it's gone from that to why are you losing so much. You can eat ice cream....
I never got that in between perfect weight, I guess.

I mean, you're right about your weight not being directly correlated to health, I've always been slightly overweight if you go by my BMI, but I live a happy and healthy life

It IS correlated, it just isn't a perfect correlation (r=1.0). Weight is a well established health factor but it isn't the only one. Plus it's mostly correlational studies which means it's harder to say anything about causality as there might be lots of other factors involved.
So you can't infer health directly from weight as is probably what you meant. But it is incorrect to say it's not correlated because it is - it just means less than most people think.

Thank you for talking about this. As someone who's always had extra weight but no health issues, confirmed by several doctor visits, it pisses me off when people tell me I should lose weight just so I LOOK healthy. Honey I can carry two of my sisters (we're all adults) at the same time. I feel like people, especially parents like mine, are going to abuse this. This should not be okayed and it looks like an actual torture device.

Seriously, this thing is literally making me sick to my stomach. It sounds like the only reason someone would be inventing something like this is sadism.
You cannot seriously claim that this is anything less than contemptious and vile.

It's probably made by people who were never overweight themselves.
      I hate humanity sometimes.
Especially as someone who was overweight

They say it's for weight loss, but how long until it's used to keep people from talking incessantly?
