The thing that amazes me about this story and hundreds like it is that customers seem to believe that they have a right to be served. It might be different in the USA where this presumably takes place, but here in the UK, with FEW exceptions such as racial profiling, any shop keeper or other service provider can refuse service and doesn't need to give a reason. So would-be customers have no right to expect or demand anything.

    • @Dubanx

      @@chrisengland5523
Legally an establishment can refuse service to customers for anything that isn't a protected class.
The issue is that doing so may anger the higher ups, and people generally don't want to risk that even when justified (just in case). Especially lower level employees that don't have any real authority to do so.

    • @chrisengland5523
      @chrisengland5523 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@Dubanx So it's much the same as in the UK then. Obviously the management won't be happy if a low level employee doesn't bend to the customer's every wish, but in many of these stories (not this particular one), the Karens threaten to call the police. What are the police going to do? Nothing unless as you point out, the refusal is in what you refer to as a "protected class".

Story 2 reminded me of something that happened to my sister when she was sixteen. She and a friend where at Monoprix, (French fancy version of Walmart), and they were looking through some products in the clothes and jewelry department, tried some but didn’t find anything they liked so they left everything in the changing room and where about to leave, until a security guard stopped them from doing so. The guy accused them of stealing and instead of you know, checking their bags for anything or checking the changing rooms he forced them to follow him into the security room. He then showed them the video of them going in and out of the changing room and interrogated and intimidated them for an hour until my mom arrived absolutely furious. My sister and her friends was then able to prove their innocence and my mom demanded some accountability from the shop for falsely accusing my sister and leaving two underage teenagers alone with no one else than a security guard who had been aggressive towards them. The guy was fired. That may seems a bit of an overreaction but normally my sister shouldn’t have gone to the security room before my mom got here, they were supposed to call my mom and wait before she arrives before taking my sister anywhere. My mom is also a sa survivor so she was not amused at the idea of a stranger dragging her teenage daughter to god knows where with no witnesses.

She let a stranger drag her away from public into a small room with another stranger. I don't think I need to say any more to let imagination take over if this was a darker scenario. I can only think young people like this have been too sheltered. At least one parent should bring up some examples of disturbing scenarios (in a home situation conversation), and discuss what is best to do if this happens, or that happens. Not everyone is nice out there. Sometimes not everyone is nice at home either; but rather than getting bogged down in the emotional aspects of those situations, parent/s, mentors should be guiding young people in how to get out of these situations in the best way. I flat out told my kids (when they were teenagers and had cell phones) if you're in trouble, DON'T CALL ME FIRST. Call the police, if you've still got access to your phone. Don't be dumb.

I recently read a comment about how the commenter thinks that on some level, most Karens genuinely think the world is "Me, people who do what I say, and managers" and they just translate that to everything, from stores to police (hence them threatening to call the police over things that aren't illegal and demanding the police do as they say). I think that particular Karen is the peak of that thinking, she assumes that anyone with "authority" can just fire anyone who doesn't have it.
That, or she was so stuck in her assumption that the OP worked there, that even being outright told didn't penetrate her thick skull and she just heard the Manager "Saying some nonsense about why he WON'T fire her or do what I say" and just rejected it without actually hearing _what_ was being said.

Definitely. This. Absolutely this. I used to be friends with a lady who had tendency to be a karen. There was no getting through to her. She had this Grand delusion that if she hadn't heard of something then it didn't exist. If she discovered something, despite it possibly being common knowledge to everyone else, she wasted no time in educating everyone on her new discovery because it obviously had to be new for them as well. In other words I think she was probably a narcissist with sociopathic tendencies. The way she would go out of her way to retaliate against anyone that she felt even minorly slighted by was staggering. Then she set her sights on me. She would always try to dodge accountability by playing the victim or feigning ignorance or even gaslighting through emotional blackmail and mental manipulation. When I wasn't falling for it she started getting very snooty and raising her voice at me. I literally had to yell at her to STFU and it stunned her into silence. She didn't have the audacity to act all offended, then questioned why I was speaking to her like that. I once again told her to STFU and then I went down the litany of atrocity she committed against me that she thought she was so secretive and clever about. In short, she was a liar and a thief and I had everything I needed to Sue her. I knew she'd never have any of the funds to pay me restitution so I took to social media and posted all of my evidence there. Apparently she flipped out and threatened to sue me for libel. It's not liable when it's true and it was all her own words just captured in screenshots. I also later heard that she never got over being vested by me. She shouldn't have screwed with the person who knew all of her secrets

Best bet is to ignore, if they escalate you call for security and the police.

First, while I can understand mistaking OP for the girl that should have been there as some people, myself included, aren't always the best at faces, especially those we've likely only seen once or twice, he should have verified her name before assuming OP was the late girl. Second, he dragged her to the office. I get he was upset and she started going the wrong way, but he shouldn't have grabbed OP, just told verbally redirected her. The boss didn't seem to do anything wrong besides just assume his employee knew what the girl that was supposed to be there looked like.

@@danlewis6157 Not sure why you responded to my comment with this, as no one was saying what he did was ok. But it's highly unlikely that he would ever get jail time for it. Courts don't just look at the action itself, but the context surrounding the action and the motivation behind it. He had no nefarious plans and genuinely believed she was this other girl who was late for her first day. As said before, he shouldn't have grabbed and dragged her, but jail time, which is a pretty severe punishment for a lot of people, is a bit harsh. However termination would be a fair punishment, as even if it was the other girl, he shouldn't have grabbed her.

I also told them that they would all be named in a harassment and libel suit if they didn't back off. The mere mention of getting the law involved make the harassment temporarily stop. Naturally, being a total karen, my former friend would not rest because she couldn't handle not having her way. Last story: I can completely verify that people will not read instructions. Part of my job is to run a training course, and it takes some pre-course work on my part to set up a training account for every individual participant. Because of this, I have a strict deadline as to when you can register for the course, registration closes a day and a half prior to the start time, which gives me time to assign the accounts and for the participants to follow the pre-class instructions to check their logins and contact me if there is an issue. The instructions page clearly state, in large red bolded letters to boot, both at the beginning and end of the instructions, that the registration deadline is firm, exceptions cannot be made, late registrations are not considered, please register for the next class if you miss the date, etc. And yet, about 8 out of 10 times, (I run the course twice a month), someone will message me the day of the course as to why they didnt get the course meeting invitation and can't get in after trying to sign up past the deadline date. It really is very annoying.

This could seriously affect morale and authority later. Worse, a customer could easily assume that if the manager has so little respect for employees or the law, they might be cutting corners elsewhere in the business.
A single fake firing could easily have a huge snowball effect, especially when it happens at the front of the store where it could be seen by dozens of people.

Story 2 - That is called abduction. No matter if they are an employee or not it is NOT legal for anyone to lay hands on you unless they are law enforcement or you are in immediate danger. Dragging OP to the office like that was abduction and it should have been reported.
Story 6 - OP should have gone "Oh, one moment let me call Airbnb for you." then called Airbnb, explain the situation to them, give them the airbnb address and while on the phone ask Sylvia for her last name and give that. Then explain on how abusive they have just been to you, a neighbor.. Then watch as Sylvia and co get a call informing them their reservation has been cancelled due to breach of terms.

I've learned that being oblivious to the people around you and staring at them with an emotionless expression when they try to give you a negative confrontation helps out a lot. For some reason, this amused the people in my high school and I was voted "Most Unique" for the yearbook. I thought about telling them that "Unique" does not come in terms of degrees and there can't be a "Most" version of it, but that would have required me caring enough to talk about it.

Story 5: Yeah, OP needs to be more careful about who they reveal their autism to. Using it as an excuse or any kind of explanation about yourself to a stranger is an incredibly risky move. Some will understand, but those who already have the wrong idea will either pity you or use it as ammo. If it's not a necessary detail, just keep your mouth shut.

#1) It doesn't matter what you wear when you're shopping, entitled people see *any* uniform at all and somehow think they have the privilege of making the person in that uniform not only their personal servant, but also subject to their abuse. Managers encourage customer abuse by fake firing customers instead of escorting the Karens out of the store, trespassing when warranted, and banning them.
#3) This guy has the best sense of humor! I'm surprised he didn't throw in a lawn edging joke while he was at it. Smartassery for the win.
#4) I'm going to remember this line; it's phenomenal. Call the nursing home to pick the senile Karen up. Brilliant.

As an Autistic aggressive people, bullies and Karens spike my anxiety to the point where it's impossible to communicate. When I had trouble with a male Karen who spiked my anxiety and anger to the point where I was struggling to resist the urge to hurt him, I followed an old therapist's advice and called the cops and the only people that I could tell that I'm Autistic were the cops.

Karens. Minds clouded by frustration and eyes clouded by hate. The moment they see someone that is even partly similar to the shop employees, they start their tirade to make life miserable for strangers and the staff so they can get their way with no heed of human decency.

Story #1: I would have fired Karen, for hassling a manager for such a petty work place thing. "Karen I am sorry but I am going to fire you instead, your inability to work well with others and problem solve on your own has showed that you are not a fit for this company, as such I would like you to reflect on your experience here as one of our older members and ask your self, was it worth it? good bye Karen.

Wholesome IDWHL story, happened to me:
I'm an EMT. I was in uniform at a local fast food place, waiting on lunch for me and my partner. (He was in the ambulance, taking care of stuff. We had already ordered and paid.) A pair of ladies were sitting at a table, and one asked me for utensils for her meal. It took a few tries, but her friend finally managed to clue her about my actual profession.
I went and got the utensils anyway, since I wasn't busy. She apologized for the mix-up and thanked me for my help.
Not exactly a thrilling story, but 100% true. Nice to know not all mistakes end in shame.
