Maybe Altered Beast today seems boring, but at the time it was SO AMAZING that you just want to play to see the transformation when you get the 3 blue spheres... man, everyone was just staring at the TV in silence. And yes... as time went by the game generally stayed at the bottom of the shelf. I didn't consider the game very easy, especially in the last phase, but I was never a dedicated gamer. Perhaps for a casual audience the difficulty is adequate (maybe this was one of the reasons they sold it together with the console at the beginning?). Who knows!
So I’ll be honest, I grew up with the Sega Genesis and I remember trying out Altered Beast back in the day…yeah, this one sadly didn’t click with me. Granted I played it a few years into the Genesis’s lifecycle, so I had already played far better games in its genre. That being said, another great review, TC!
There's a bit of, you had to be there at the time to this game. As you mentioned, it was the pack in for the Genesis. I have really fond memories of playing this in two player with my brother for quite a while after we got our Genesis. It filled the purpose of giving us a fun, quick romp that showed the promise of system. It was a good pack in at the time that did its job. I don't think it's aged great, so I'd agree with your overall take, but at the time? It was great.
I definitely agree with your assessment of needing to be there during that time. That's awesome you have some great memories with your brother playing this game. You also summed it up nicely in that it gave you a fun quick rump while showing promise of the system. Thanks for watching and dropping a comment!
I dont think its boring. It has great presentation and a unique mechanic where you become a new beast every stage. It definetely loses points for being short though. I cant imagine paying full price for this game when it came out. Super mario brothers is one of the first platformers and its way longer.
Awesome input, I enjoyed hearing the reasons on why you enjoy Altered Beast. I did love the transformations and the boss fights. The sound effects are quite excellent too. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
I have a few of those games from my childhood that I loved and then I replay them and think... "oh". Haha, thank you for the kind words and dropping a comment!
problem is ppl did not played this when it was first released what will change your opinion Altered Beast is a iconic game and was a huge hit arcade and home system . does not matter what you think now for its time it was a great game and i still think every playable now tbh.
It was 9th birthday morning opening a package and to my sock it was a Sega Genesis. Getting a system at launch was a pretty big deal back then especially at nine years old. This game holds alot of good memories, and for 89' this was an impressive arcade port.
@tundra678 I was there 😂😂 I'm 44, I can remember seeing the cabinet for the 1st time and it was magical. Same with street fighter, new kids playing it for the 1st time today have a different experience. These games are classics and should be judged for what it was at the time and not held to today's standards
I think if I would have played it when it was released I would have enjoyed it more or been impressed by it. I'm glad you enjoyed the game! Thanks for watching and dropping a comment.
Altered Beast came out at a period in gaming where the imaginations of the artists behind it were constrained by the available technology. The art and concept were much cooler than the game itself, but of course it came out in 1988. If it had been made 10 years later it would basically be Soul Reaver/God of War.
I love all the concept artwork and designs from that era. You're right, they were so much cooler but it went so far for the marketing. Thanks for watching!
I don't know how old you are but when the Genesis first released Altered Beast was the bomb. The graphics, compared to what we were used to at the time coming from the SMS and NES, were unreal. Same goes for the music.
As somebody who never liked Altered Beast (granted, I didn't play it until a compilation disc years later), even I was like, "What are you talking about?" when he gave the graphics crap, given when it came out.
Love to hear how much you enjoyed Altered Beast! I was not alive for the release of it but I appreciate those who like the game. I'm sure it was amazing for those trying the next gen. Thanks for watching!

But after removing the rose tinted glass of nostalgia, you're absolutely right, that game is not very good lol! Great video and keep up the good work!
@peterkozlowski4377 At that price point? Maybe you were one of the lucky ones who's parents could afford that System and games but mine couldn't so the Genesis was my gateway to arcade games at home.

I like this one because is very straightforward: beat demons up, and save the girl. I think this game is stuck in a rollercoaster: when debuted, it was in a high because it was awesome to play Altered Beast at home; then, when newer 16-bit games got out, it fall into a low because it was a lame game; but now, it raised into a high again, because you can sit in front a TV and beat a fun game in half a hour.
You make a lot of great points. I'm sure it was really cool when it first came out and then quickly fell to the bottom when other games were released. Thanks for checking this out and leaving a comment!
I like it, when it just came out in arcade, it is quite interesting concept, and graphic is good at the time. But as you said, it is really easy and short, but arcade machine design to attract player and coin at the time. So like most arcade player at the time, there is another competition, that is highest score. It will show up, and because this game is really easy, the challenge was to kill every enemy came to the screen, and that is how you get the full score.
I think the concept is pretty good, but you make some great points about attracting players to play the game. Great input on the game! Thanks for watching and dropping a comment.
I quite enjoyed the Arcade version, its simple short and repetitive, ideal arcade stuff. But wholeheartedly agree for an home system this was a bit lightweight, although I found it kinda fun, well mostly😅. Good video btw 👏.
I did play some Altered Beast, but only as an adult. It was... meh. Haha. It wasn't horrible, just not as good as a lot of similar arcades. The story was pretty good, it was just the battling itself that was pretty meh. I tried multiplayer with my son, and it was still pretty easy. Didn't seem to change the difficulty much. 4:10 this transformation was custom made just for you... past devs were psychic 😀 The bosses were semi-creative, but yeah, didn't feel super cohesive. I agree the sound effects were good, and some of the graphics were good (but a lot were ugly too).
"Meh" is the correct term. I should change the scoring scale for 6-7 as "meh games" haha. I do think the story was pretty fun, but the fighting is just very slow paced and boring. I'm jealous you got to try multiplayer but it sounds like it was easy still. I know, those devs knew I would be reviewing the game over 30 years into the future! Makes you wonder what else they know about me. I did love the bosses. They are so bizarre. Sound effects were pretty good too. Thanks for watching buddy!
I remember seeing this game first as an arcade cabinet and it was one of the first time seeing a game with graphics that good (as I was mainly used to Intellivision at that point). 😂
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames it was definitely old by the time I was old enough to play on it, but I remember it having some pretty good games on there! Most people know _Burger Time,_ and there were some cool space shooters on there. The controller looks absolutely ridiculous though. Google that one. 😂
Bad graphics? I respectfully, but vehemently, disagree. It's easy to look at a 35-year-old game and slag on its visuals; however, for the time, this was top notch stuff, especially on a brand new console.
Nothing wrong with disagreeing! I appreciate the respectful nature. I’m sure it was a wild transition from the NES/SMS to the Genesis. I think the backgrounds bore me a bit too much but I do love the transitions and boss sprites.
Tiger should really go back and play the ARCADE Altered Beast. The soundtrack, music and sound effects in the arcade made it a very awesome experience when it was released. The Sega Genesis version is passable, but lame in comparison to the arcade version.
I never cared for Altered Beast. Arguably one of my least favorite Sega games. My disinterest in it was to the point that I couldn't believe when I later saw people praising it online.

It's been a long time since I played it, but I didn't think the arcade was particularly easy. Of course, I was just a kid when I played it. I really can't speak to the Genesis version since I don't think I've played it. Or, at least, I haven't played it very much.
I haven't played the arcade version, but I would love to give it a shot sometime. I don't think Altered Beast is a bad game, just pretty average. Thanks for watching!
Have to disagree. It was fun when it came out, played it when my brother got it with his genesis. Huge plus, the game was free at first. Second, the game gets harder as you play through each time (not sure about a cap). Co-op was great so you missed a huge part of playing. Golden Axe is better in co-op as well. Plus as a port from the arcade, no quarter munching. It was a launch title so yes it's short, but for the time it was definitely awesome.
Definitely give it a shot! I thought it was on the easier side for sure. Once you get the boss pattern down it's pretty simple. Best of luck and happy gaming!
Matter of opinion. I always liked the game myself; it was one of my arcade faves. It's by no means the greatest game of that era, but it's also far from the worst. Sure, it's repetitive, but so were most other games of the time.
I think you hated this game more than me. You left off the banger soundtrack. I don't hate easier games as much as you. I like to get some easy W's every now and then. Playing co-op is pretty similar to playing solo. You both have to get 3 orbs which can be a little tricky. The platforming also gets a bit tougher. I also love when you collect an orb and stand there as you get bigger and then get punched in the face.
It does have an awesome soundtrack! I didn't hate the game haha, I just think it's average! I would love to play co-op at some point. And I don't mind the easy W's.... sometimes after playing a brutal soulsbourne game, it's nice to not have to slog through every enemy. Thanks for watching, nerds!
alTURD beast. I hate this game. Always have always will. Solid review. I think you were too generous with the score but again I hate this game so my opinion is very skewed. I always appreciated sega trying to port arcade games but man do I hate this game
If you read the comments there are some pretty passionate Altered Beast fans here haha. I agree with you though, I think it's pretty average although you may dislike it a bit more than that. I really appreciate you checking out the review. Thanks my guy.
Yyyyea, dude. Reviews like this are meaningless. You had to be there. Altered Beast was cutting edge at the time. It's a classic. It's context, also. This reminds me of a recent Pamela Anderson video. Pamela is like any other broad today, but Pam was a big deal because she was before OF, before IG, before twitter, before smart phones, before high-speed internet. Altered Beast was a launch title for the Sega Genesis, which was the beginning of the 16-bit era. It was like nothing before. You're crazy.
I beg to differ, but that’s alright. I didn’t say it was a bad game, just average. I’m glad you enjoyed the game and appreciated it when it was released. Thanks for watching 🤙🏻
You are the first person to bring up his kicks haha. Yeah the animation motion for it is a bit sus. The bosses were pretty neat though. Thanks for watching!
I found it pretty boring too. I wonder if you would have a different perspective if you played it as a kid as many others seem to be defending it for that timeframe. Thanks for watching and dropping a comment!
@TigerChainsawVideoGames I had three games when I got my Mega Drive in 1991, Sonic, Alex Kidd, and 🤮🤮Altered Beast. At 18 years old, Alex Kidd was way beneath me, but got far more gameplay than I ever put into that shambles of a game Altered Beast 🤮

Haha I try and give as much detail for a plot in every review that I do! Thanks for watching, good luck trying to beat it someday.
I will have to play it again because as far as I remember it, it is difficult AF!!!
That's awesome you enjoy the game! I respect your opinion, and as you said, all of this is just opinions. Thanks for watching and sharing a comment.
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames Cheers man. Good luck with your channel. 👍
@@Eff_One thanks my guy 🤙🏻
I will never forgive you for this title
Haha, my bad! Thanks for watching.
I think we both have the same opinions on this game. Definitely a prisoner of its time. its great but extremely dated.
That sums it up pretty well. I like that "prisoner of its time". Thanks for watching buddy!
I loved Altered Beast as a kid but as an adult it is a bad game pretty much unplayable to me.
It's funny how much we enjoy certain games as kids and then we grow up and realize... it's not very good haha. Thanks for watching!
@@TigerChainsawVideoGames well games have gotten a lot better and back then that game looked amazing compared to other games of the time.
alTURD beast.
Hater, lol jk but i loved this game as a kid. This and space harrier for the genesis for my 8th birthday still have and love them to this day,
I love hearing the Birthday memories! Super cool gifts. I'm glad you enjoy Altered Beast. Thanks for watching!
Spoiler warning on a 30 plus year old game 😂
Haha, yeah that's kinda a running gag for my reviews. I always post the spoiler warning even if the game is 30+ years old. JUST IN CASE! haha.
Nope, bad review.
What did you disagree with?
Yeah this game doesn't look very good. The guy's kick is super weird but the bosses do look kind of cool! Nice video
You are the first person to bring up his kicks haha. Yeah the animation motion for it is a bit sus. The bosses were pretty neat though. Thanks for watching!
Altered Beast is awesome, you just don't know shit about games brah.
Haha well I appreciate the enthusiasm. I'm glad you enjoyed Altered Beast. Thanks for watching.
I never liked this game...i find it very boring..
I had a sega mega drive as a kid and thankfully i never played it back then....
I found it pretty boring too. I wonder if you would have a different perspective if you played it as a kid as many others seem to be defending it for that timeframe. Thanks for watching and dropping a comment!
Altered Beast is the diarrhea of video games
LOL that's one way of putting it. Thanks for watching!
6.1 is a very generous score for Altered Beast on the Mega Drive. My personal score is 🤮🤮🤮🤮
LOL uh oh, altered beast didn't tickle your fancy?! I bet Bobby down the street loves it.
@@GenerationPixel My guy is going off!! But I love hearing the games you got with the system.
