Honestly though I get why he’s saying this. A LOT of bad sales people in the car industry. Whenever I shop around for friends and family’s I run into it all the time.
These annoying “tactics” of selling a car are why I left the business… sales managers never want to give salespeople numbers to a customer if they’re not in the store. Can’t waste their time and trap them for 4 hours because “time = obligation”. I’ve missed unit bonuses and future customers for myself and the store because they didn’t want to compete and make an easy phone deal. Another store had the shitty spray on ceramic coating that costs less than $20 a bottle, took roughly 20 minutes for detail to apply, but to add “value” and justify the $1500 fee, customers were told that it would take a few hours to apply. So after the 20 minute application, the lot guys would hide it somewhere for that extended timeframe before calling. Just a former salesperson ranting I guess lol. Thanks for what you do.
Same here, dealerships could make more money and get more sales if they quit playing these games. I lost many deals. I did have one good manager who would work with me on numbers on phone or internet. But that was rare
@Sensei_888 I’m in school now, working retail part time atm. I was on and off for a couple of years but my longest was 9 months at a CDJR and Alfa Romeo dealer. Definitely not a long time compared to others. I liked cars and thought it would be a cool job since I’d be around them all day. I was promised a lot of money really quick and potential 6 figures if I did good. I didn’t do bad but it definitely was not that much, that’s your very top earning salesperson.
Its like going to a foreign country and find different prices and deals based on whether or not you're a local or a foreigner so you could get ripped accordingly
I work for a Chevrolet dealership and I sale cars. We are not all like this. We sell at msrp plus manufacture rebates which can be anywhere from $500 to $6500 depending on the vehicle. Any vehicle under 50 thousand has about a 700-1800 dollar markup from invoice(what we pay for it) there is not always profit in a car deal. Everything is public knowledge and we want volume so we give great deals.
He made it seemed like the truck is in demand and he only has 1. And the special ends this month. Creates a sense of urgency to trick your mind into " i need to buy it now or its gone." Typical sales strategy.
So, $13,000-14,000 off a inflated ridiculous price, is still over priced!!! These crooks wouldn't know how to tell the truth if their life depended on it, they would still lie and screw you!!!!!
I must live in an area where we don't have to deal with this. I walked into a dealership 1500 off for military discount, 10000 trade in for a car worth 6000 and I financed 2% for 60 months. No add ons no going back and forth.
That was actually the first thing that came to my mind but I figured you had edited it out for privacy reasons. But yeah it makes sense. I have never seen so little motivation to sell trucks. Inventory isn't really as high as people think it is either. They seem to have it set up so they will get one or two of a particular trim or engine within 50 miles and they know it's the only one around. You can pay the price or someone else will. I ish you not, right now, a nearby CDJR dealer has one 1500 on the lot. Just one. A single RAM 1500 and that's it.
I never got a call back from Bomnin Chevy either. They offer up to 20k off on select models but good luck getting someone to call you back much less get an OTD quote in writing.
I don't think I will buy a new vehicle ever again. Not only do they say outright their doing you a favor by selling you a vehicle, that they are going to overcharge you, add things you don't want and overcharge you for them , mark the interest rate up by at least 2 points or more than the banks, and the only option you have is to get on your knees or bend over more or less, for or an item that depreciates and diminishes as soon as you buy it and drive it of the lot by 10% and up to 20% the first year on average. Three years 50%. Has everyone lost their minds! With an average price of a truck at over $60,000. It went from ignorance to stupid.
I’m confused, wonder if someone can help me understand. I’ve watched a number of videos on car negotiations here and other channels (e.g. CarEdge), but I’m not sure what they refer to when they say “I got a deal with $X off MSRP”. To my understanding, the OTD is comprised of MSRP, tax, etc. So, when negotiating, if I say I want to get -$2k off MSRP, does that mean that final, total OTD = MSRP - $2k? Or do they mean that they just shaved off $2k from the MSRP component, but the OTD is still greater than MSRP in the end (because of taxes, etc.) E.g.: MSRP = $10000, tax = $1000, other fees = $1000. Would “I got a deal for $2k off MSRP” mean the OTD = $10000 (MSRP - $2k + tax + other fees) OR OTD = $8k (MSRP + tax + other fees - $4k), effectively getting a discount of $4k? I’m just confused as to if I go and try to negotiate, what to even ask for exactly.
Every channel has a different negotiation strategy. This is mine as its easiest for the dealership and the consumer to understand. 7-10% off MSRP is my goal. That is off the price on the window sticker. I do not want to pay for any add ons, so I don't consider this number at all because it should be 0. I will pay a doc fee, and TTL. So it should be MSRP 40,000 Minus 7-10% 4k Net 36,000 Doc Fee 100 TTL 2500 OTD 38,600
Hey Tomi, have you ever considered doing a collaboration with Steve Richards or Andy Elliott?
