Kate is one of those rare, special dogs. You can tell there's more going on behind those eyes than with most dogs. I feel good just looking at her. Thank you for sharing your work!
Same here in Southern California. And they stop working when the temperature reaches 18C/~64F. We had a heatwave last week where the temperature didn't get that low all week.

Thankyou Sean. I am an old woman now, but was reared on a wee west highland croft, and seeing the dogs and animals brought tears to my eyes! We had an old border collie sheepdog called Cu! He had saved my old Uncle, bringing him down to the house in a very bad blizzard. When he was retired, he was allowed in the house. He used to lie in front of the fire and edge his way into the heat, but when he got too hot he'd howl and we had to drag him back again. This would go on all day! I was told not to feed the brute anything from my dinner plate, but I'd notice Uncle giving him a tit bit when he thought I could not see him! My Uncle always said that the animals were not pets, and kept this up when I was around. When I went to bed in the wee box bed, I'd hear him talking to old Cu and giving him MY Custard cream biscuits. He'd clap him and brush his coat talking away to him all the time! So, he did not practice what he was preaching! Ha-ha! Cu had trained a lot of our young dogs by the long lead method, just as you described! I'll be addicted to your videos from now on, and hope that you do well, ending up with a farm yourself! ....old Tich (nickname since schooldays)
Sean, you are a very excellent instructor. You are absolutely correct when you say only a dog that wants to will. That goes for any breed of dog that was bred for a purpose. I like the way you work with your dogs because you're a well-oiled team. It is a pleasure to watch a man and his dogs perform beautifully. Kate is a cutie. I love the smile on her face. She's so happy when you tell her good girl a grin from ear to ear. Storm, she's all business and is happy to do her job to achieve your attention. She adores you she is your dog. Thank you for doing this video. I really enjoyed it. Hope the rest of your day was a good one.🐾😊
Storm reacted to hearing her name and started to slink out to your left. Love how she watched you when you were talking-like waiting for a command. 18’ doesn’t found like warm but you are centigrade.
I find it fascinating, learning so much! I’ve never seen RAW vs. trained, so my mind is forever blown. I work with Border Collie’s and farm dogs that have been adopted into families in urban environments. I teach them how to use their herding instinct to overcome their anxiety. That is why I am glued to your channel because you can do something I will never do, but I can adapt it to help herding dogs at home. It’s so much fun, and much respect to your wife and family. Gratitude. 😊
Watching this from Canada while making pancakes for lunch. These videos are always so instructive and immersive. You're very good at finding new angles to life on the farm and herding in particular. Love to see Kate looking happy and fulfilled.
Loved this video - it was a very small moment but watching storm's pace change literally mid stride was amazing ❤ (as normally they are quite far away when you slow the pace) also truly fabtastic how she can keep the herd nice and calm bunched around you Amazing 🤩
I'll never have a job like yours, but I do love learning about how you work and train your dogs. This is so great! I absolutely adore watching your videos and learning everything you wish to teach. Thank you so much.😊
Whenever the topic of raw instincts comes up, I'm always reminded of the Border Collies & Blue Heelers that would come to socialise at the local park when I was growing up. You can really see the different behavioural instincts when you've got dogs of all ages & breeds together, and hands-down the cutest example was a Bluey puppy... less than a year old, barely started obedience training, and while all the other young dogs were chasing each other around at break-neck speed, he'd be rounding all of us humans up into a group! 🤣👍
I enjoyed learning the difference between "raw instinct and training". Kate was enjoying her solo stint, and Storm was magnificent. The sheep were pretty good too! Thank you for demonstrating the differences.
I’ve learned so much watching and listening to your thoughtful videos Sean, thank you for showing us your training skills with these awesome dogs!! All the best🥰🏴
Sean. You're real good at working and training your dogs. They love you so much. I have a Mini Aussie now. 6 mos old. I had a border collie once who died of cancer 6 yrs ago. LOVE both breeds.
I just wish I had have gotten to my rescue BC before he developed so many bad habits from being isolated for so long. We are both lucky I had plenty of time to spend with him. I’ve known since day one he would have been an amazing worker because his instincts were very strong. These dogs are so very intelligent and I sometimes tell him I’m sorry I’m not a farm owner. I’ve rarely been a day away from him and he’s my best mate. He loves going in the car with me and he’s pretty much a lounge lizard now. He loves to chase and stalk birds and sometimes I just wonder what he might have been like working. I know he would have loved it. I can only imagine what awesome parents he had. Look after your dogs. They are the greatest people.
Even during the introduction it is evident that Kate is already, in her mind, *on duty* - totally alert and ready, without a sheep in sight, in anticipation of doing her job. Then, as she is resting in the tractor after her first wild run at 4:38 , she is totally dialed in to Sean to her left, *and* simultaneously giving the sheep the side eye out of her right. Totally obedient to Sean; totally in charge of the sheep. What amazing dog!
Sean is a fantastic instructor. He clearly has a deep understanding of his art, and how it affects his animals, as well. When he talks, he comes across with respect, himself, as though he's talking to his best friend. It makes it very easy to listen to. I am a new homesteader (in other words, after 50 years of daydreaming, I finally got a small acreage). What I will be herding is just chickens, ducks, and geese but I am looking for a dog to help me. But after watching a slough of herding videos, and considering that I love lamb and have always wanted to spin, I am suddenly thinking of sheep - but the wife is standing her ground firmly against them. I know this isn't the scale of sheep herding that you, Sean, and your dogs do but I do appreciate your videos, just the same. Thank you.
With my Corgis, and raw instinct, in the beginning looked like chaos. Four years later, very controlled, a lot less chaos, she loves her job. Most of my sheep also know the commands. So fun to work with herding dogs. You have a beautiful day to do this.

Scots slang for 'uproar' 😅

Had to look it up: stramash. / (strəˈmæʃ) Scot / noun. an uproar; tumult; brawl.
