The $13 million is from a quote from Ryan Day from last year about how much he thinks it’ll cost on average for them to be able to keep the recruits they get with the new NIL world. Down’s choose OSU over Georgia because he didn’t like Georgia and never has. His family never did. He wanted to go to OSU before he went to Bama and only went for Saban and the defense they had, Knowles hadn’t proven anything with OSU yet. Howard could be some NIL plus he gets weapons he never even dreamed of at Kansas State plus an open starter spot is available. @@ebraman9588 Most people don't realize that the NCAA can't strip the championship anyway that's up to the CFP. However, they can strip the wins from the 2021-2023 regular season. IF they strip any wins from 2023 it will be up to say the Penn State game.
@ebraman9588 That's the exact response I'd expect from a Wolverine fan😅 When the old booger eater Harweird is hard at work choking away another Super Bowl, the sanctions will lay heavy and hard upon those left in Ann Arbor. Least you have a QB with an entertaining name😅🤷♂️
Ryan Day is a bigger sign stealer than anyone else in college football. I'm cool with it though because it provides very little advantage. Day should win the game this year by 30+. Hell, I could win 12 games a year at Ohio, especially after spending $20MM and illegal tampering to get better players. Good luck next year. I am feeling so good with this natty. Rather win the natty then the off season. Ohio state has never had a lack of talent what makes you think this year will be any different than the last three
You talk too much about the portal. OSU only signed 6 guys in the portal. They brought back 10 starters using NIL that could have gone to the NFL and drafted in rounds 2-7. This is new (and legal) and that is why people dont like it. Most of OSU's NIL has gone to retain players on their team.
Bringing back guys and paying them is the way to go. That's exactly Michigan's strategy- bring back draft eligible & 5th year guys, pay them and fill in w/a couple 5th year graduate's from the portal (usually lineman . Freshman don't get paid as it causes problems in the locker room. OSU is getting smarter.
@@outdoorsman909 the irony of that post. UM went went 0-8 against that weak, finesses, girly diva football. Jimbo went 0-6. But all of sudden, he’s able to soundly beat that same team for 3 years. Mhmmmmm……..

It’s just jealousy from fans of programs that can’t spend it like that. The coaches better realize what they have and make the most of it. No excuses this year. Go Bucks!
@@joshrogers7068 not in the 8 figures yet and i certainly hope not. I would never support, but i see for ohio that increased nil spending is business as usual. Fund endowments, not NIL
Julian Sayin followed the coach he wanted to be coached by Bill O'brien , now i wouldn't be surprised if Day wanted O'brien for that specific reason. A lot of teams have been pay for playing for a long time.
OSU took days and their insiders said they didn’t want Sayin because they had Noland and didn’t want to upset the QB room. They took days to decide. Sayin reached out to them. Not the other way around
Uh no- multiple unpredictable things can happen during the actual season. Who knows how it will work out. But he did just set a new bar for keeping players, recruiting, and hitting a home run in the portal. He managed a trifecta. That takes some work to build up the NIL support so quickly. Every coach is going to questioned by alumni, boosters, athletic directors saying “can you do that Ryan Day thing”? Did anyone ever get fired for having a #1 recruiting class?
@bradlucas2261 it isn't that he was foolish to do it, but I do wonder how many resources he burned through and over how many years the nil funds will be felt from this single off-season.
How much money did UM spend on stealing signs? how much money will that cost UM after sanctions?Be sure to count the vacated wins, recruiting fall-off, and the effects that will have on revenue.
I think this is great! Giving a bunch of drunk college students millions, what could possibly go wrong. Athletes especially collegiate athletes are the smartest demographic on campus anyways and they always make great decisions. I see this as only getting better over time
I can't wait for the Rich Eisen show that follows the NCAA vacating Michigans title and hammering them with sanctions. That will be an interesting day.
Get over it!, Michigan won the title out right, that title and trophy is staying in Ann arbor .P.S. Michigan didn't have to buy a championship team like Georgia, Alabama, Texas A&M and now Ohio state.
Coaches can’t just leave whenever they want, they have buy-outs negotiated into their contracts. I hate when the media potrays NIL and transfer portal like it’s the same as what the coaches do. It’s legitimately 2 completely different things.
OSU has been holding back and not wanting to break rules that were coming when it comes to NIL. NOW they decided to take the gloves off and it’s a problem. Ole Miss, Texas A&M and the SEC have been doing this for years but never was a problem. The 6 transfers were not because of NIL. NIL money went to keeping the NFL guys for 1 more year
It's only a problem when Ohio State does it right? But when the SEC has been doing it for years, that's fine right? Texas a&m, Ole Miss, ect. Stop it. It's a bad look.
The complaints about Ohio State for taking advantage of the new NIL world is just the beginning. College football as we knew it before is over and within a few years we will see a new division that will be open professionalism instead of it hiding behind NIL. When Texas A&M was paying players to come play is when things really changed and in my opinion was when Saban knew the game was passing him by. Michigan is at a cross roads with impending sanctions, Harbaugh gone and a rebuild of a majority of its roster.
Don't know much about Mich do you? The guy that scored the first two touchdowns in the Championship game, he's back, the best running back in Ohio is now in Ann Arbor. The defensive front that stopped Bama they are coming back our #1 corner Will Johnson coming back. I could go on and on and on. We rotated players the whole year. You're in for a big shock. If we can get the QB up to speed you'll be clutching your pearls again. We are team that loves each other, you have mercenaries that play for pay.
Downs said everybody told him they want him. but Ohio State told him "they need him". That meant something to him. People that thought Georgia was the place didn't listen to him. Even though he was from Georgia, Kirby hired his coaches, but OSU was always a close 2nd after he chose Alabama. He entered the portal to go to Ohio State. He was always way ahead of the media. Hopefully, the money won't change him. ...something scouts can watch carefully now. Jordan Addison dropped in talent after he took the USC job. Now that NIL has become more upfront, we will really know who changes , and who can keep improving despite the money
@@Al-Rudigor I just am making a point about how awesome the Alumni is at Ohio State. You're right.. it's not my money.. but I'm glad they are doing it. It's facinating
Caleb Downs returned a punt for a TD,, Something OSU has not done since Brian Hartline did it 150 years ago. Downs had more tackles (from the safety position than anyone at Ohio State.. by like 25 tackles. He had more interceptions than the entire team. He is our best player. He might be the best player in CFB next year
In the top 53 NIL deals, Ohio State has 11 of them. Deon Sanders extorted Colorado for the top 2 (shed and hunter) and #12 (shilo). Each of the big ones (Bama, Texas, Oregon) has a couple. Back in the day when the athletes played where they lived, it was the Big 3 (FSU, the U and Gators). Then it was players migrating to the coach with NFL projections (Alabama, Georgia, Clemson). Now, the deepest pockets pillage the top players from Florida, Georgia, Texas and Cally. Ohio State are the NY Yankees of NCAAF.
What’s hilarious to me is schools in the south of been doing this forever and Ohio State has one great off-season, bringing in players and everyone’s all over Ohio State. Like oh my God how can he spend that much money! You’re all a bunch of hypocrites
The best part, they’ve only brought in 6 guys and 2 of them will probably have no impact this year at all 😂 Ole Miss, Mr. Lane Kiffen started this with his false tweet, Texas and others have way bigger transfer classes.

Question. I am new to this whole NIL money thing. If someone could help me understand. When you are recruiting a high school player, do they offer the player cash to play at their university? It used to be the offer of a scholarship....but now is it a guaranteed amount....like in a "contract."? Further, doesn't SMU deserve to be pardoned for the violations that lead to the death penalty the 1980's, with all this stuff going on now and players being paid? I am just a graduate of Weber State so not a TON of high flying talent there LOL. Just trying to understand.
When players get a scholarship it had NOTHING to do with their "Name, Image or Likeness". NOW it is possible to get cash or items of value also....from collectives. NOT from the University or boosters. A "contract" is signed to receive a scholarship, But not for NIL money. How can someone be pardoned when they've died? Comprehend?
Notice people never talk about the number 2 NIL school. Nike has given Oregon 1 BILLION dollars in the lst 10-15 years. Thats 100-200 Million a year. For over a decade

Well, this is just great! The NFL killed my love for Pro Football, and now the NIL has just about killed my first love which was College Football. Anyone know what Network is broadcasting the upcoming season of Pickleball??
People that were ACTUALLY in the know knew that OSU was very much in contention for Caleb Downs even without the NIL. He literally only picked Bama over Buckeyes because of questions about how good OSUs defense was. Turns out pretty Fing good, so why would Georgia suddenly be the frontrunner just because they hired his position coach?
This is what I love about college football. The sheer, rank pettiness between rivals ( "Michigan won a title; this school spent millions to make sure it NEVER happens again..."). If you're a fan of a school with a long-standing major rival, no matter how you feel about Ohio State, you know you're noddin' your head - maybe even begrudgingly - in tacit approval. The mantra of a college football fan with a hated rival: "ANYBODY BUT THEM..."
Even as an OSU fan I am not sure how much I like the NIL situation. I definitely want players to get a fair share of the value they bring to these campuses, to the fans, and all the money they bring to the universities -- as it relates to football. But the Supreme Court opened a can of worms with their support for NIL. There are not many rules in place and some schools can just spend more. Ohio State is not the only school that has big donors that can spend. So does Michigan. We've seen what Texas A&M can do but that first attempt backfired on them with so many of those recruits not panning out or transferring out. But A&M and U.T. Austin will be able to spend a ton if they feel they have to get into the arms race. USC has massive donors. Heck, if Harvard University really wanted to they could outspend everyone and recruit so many top-level players to deals that might make the NFL blush. At some point there will have to be some rules in place.
Yall Are literally making your issue about Ohio state but bama and sec did it since nil came out that’s how they done beat Ohio state to some of these top players now we gotta fire 🔥under us revenge season be ready 🥇
Richie knows OSU said ok you cheated to win we won't cheat but we have more money than any program but AM well we will spend money to get what we need. And your whole OL was transfers SFB
Ohio State recruited Sayin big time and they were his second choice. He also loved Bill O'Brian who was hired at Ohio State so I understand why he called them after Saben retired. It makes sense.
The NIL is the Wild West in college sports. Very few rules, it will result in just a handful of programs with the most money getting the most talent…and unrestrained portal allows kids to follow the money
None of this is new. In the 70’s players were given cars, apartments paid, monthly allowances, and the top flight players given pieces of local businesses like Coca Cola.
Ryan Day said when NIL began, he’d guess it would take spending $12m per year to compete. And I think that’s an underestimate. OSU has one of the richest alumni base and CANNOT lose to michigan again. I expect it to start being closer to $25m/year. And wouldn’t be surprised if it gets closer to $50m/yr. if they don’t just make all the players employees of the universities before NIL gets out of hand. But for now, it is what it is. SEC has been playing players for over ten years with cash in a napsack lol Just think about it, BIG10 tv rights are over $100m per team. And only gonna get bigger adding these 4 new teams. Maybe these athletic departments need to invest rather than ask fans or lining their pockets. ps. the big10 NEEDS to snatch up FSU(and try for Notre Dame) to truly maximize the next, who knows, $20 BILLION tv deal
Impressed that Bruce Feldman refused to commit to a number that he couldn't independently confirm, despite Rich Eisen's repeated efforts to pin him down.
Funny when everyone else, including Michigan, spends money, then it's not a big deal, but when OSU does it better than all of a sudden there is a problem. Michigan had a stay fund to keep guys from leaving. Why you think most came back this year?
Ignorant of you to say that. Ohio State is pending NIL money to keep up with the SEC schools U of M is too cheap to keep up. Step up or fall further behind
They should give a bulk of the money to the kids after they graduate and provide a stipend during their college career. Also setting these kids up with a 401K type of structure so they can reap the benefits throughout their life.
No, they are US citizens and should be able to capitalize on their own name, image and likeness. I do know that Ohio State has financial advisors for the players, right in their facility.
NIL is killing college football. It’s funny, the whole scallions spygate was against the NCAA rules because smaller schools couldn’t afford pre-scouting so the NCAA put the rule in place that no pre-scouting could occur. Now use that same philosophy to NIL. You have schools without NIL or a formal NIL program. Small schools don’t have the alumni base to fund. But you have schools like Ohio State, with a huge alumni base and NFL alumni pouring millions of dollars in there. You have a shitty coach with no player development, but they’re buying their team. Absolutely ridiculous!
100% agree and to Rich's point, what are the rules and regulations around NIL? I have absolutely no idea. Is there a cap? How is this information recorded and reported to the NCAA? It's coming down to who can spend the most money will win the natty it seems. All the conference realignment too has just killed the tradition and rivalry games. It's kind of sad. I do agree that the players should be compensated, but paying them more than and NFL rookie? That is absurd!!!
OSU doesn’t have the alumni players poring millions in like you think they do. Only Stroud has helped give back to any of the NIL foundations so far. Now older players maybe but I doubt it.
'College football, basketball, etc' are no longer amateur sports in essence. Why should players be enrollees in the school, essentially a longstanding charade?
Why shouldnt the players share in the money that the school, coaches and ncaa make off of them. Rosen is acting as if these players don’t already have agents when they go to college , they have compliance departments at some of these schools as well that goes through nil
You got it just the opposite. See the title of the WSJ article? 8 figure NIL spending is in response to michigans win. Talk about obsessive, ohio has a clock in woody hall counting the seconds till next michigan game.😮

Little m had an easier schedule than Ohio State this year. Ohio State had the 14th most difficult, U of M 47th. Harbaugh didn't beat anyone of not outside the Big Ten until this year. However this is journalism or lack there of in today’s day and age. Also not one dam person made a stink about it until OSU got 3 high profile players.

Rich will never admit that his teams cheating is catch up to them.
Right, maybe most players don’t want to play for cheaters, even if that team cheated its way to a Natty.

Sounds less like jealousy and more like gloating over the fact that OSU has to spend $20+ million to have a shot at beating Michigan and winning the playoffs

Harbaugh will also win a Super Bowl and not be a failure in the league like urban and Saban.@@NBAwasBetterInThesands

I'm a fan and would not want michigan to spend 8 figures on NIL. This is for the 4 year community colleges like ohio that live and die with football.
@flubidy you might want to check the estimates. Your team is paying millions in nil deals right now. It could easily be 10s of millions soon.

Yea-the pressure is on now. It’s natty or bust
I see this as only getting better over time
the fact that you classify them as drunk says a lot more about you than it does about them.

Wrong and wrong.
NIL money went to keeping the NFL guys for 1 more year
Ole Miss and A&M ARE IN the SEC
"hiding behind NIL"??? Your lack of knowledge is showing
Please stop counting other people's money.
It's amazing how Rich wants to bash Ohio State for playing by the rules. Yet does not mention that Michigan cheated for 3 years.
Overblown. Huge majority of NIL was spent on their EXISTING players. Caleb downs got 900k and he was a coin flip between Alabama and OSU out of HS
Lane Kiffen started this with his false tweet, Texas and others have way bigger transfer classes.
the last thing any other school should want is to start throwing dollars with columbus. don't care who you are, you don't have it like they do. i'm so excited for the reality michigan is about to face. your second tier program that can only peak occasionally is about to come crashing down so hard

Funny how as soon as Ohio State has some success in the NIL world everyone all the sudden wants to tear it down.
Julian Sayain is from Carlsbad San Diego not Calabassas!
A couple transfers who had Ohio State as their 2nd school leaving after their coach retires is not really surprising to anyone

Since when did the Wall Street journal print correct data.
Sayin is from Carlsbad, not Calabasas. Sayin came to Ohio State, they didn't chase him. Ohio State finished 2nd for Downs out of HS.
Scared Rich ?
None of this is new. In the 70’s players were given cars, apartments paid, monthly allowances, and the top flight players given pieces of local businesses like Coca Cola.
Ohio State has the 5 of the last 8 NFL rookies of the year. Nothing to do with NIL.
SEC has been playing players for over ten years with cash in a napsack lol
Just think about it, BIG10 tv rights are over $100m per team.

That would be against the law in a Capitalist country. NO ONE can tell anyone how or went to spend their money. You sound like a Communist
