You guys are fantastic and very informative. I was in a bad car accident 6 years ago, and I ended up with 8 compression fractures in my back from osteoporosis I didn’t know I had until the accident. I’m having a hard time finding any help medically and they aren’t healing. I’m 45 years old and pretty much bed ridden from these fractures. I have my bone density checked regularly due to taking a non-steroid anti inflammatory, Azathioprine for Ulcerative Colitis. I’ve been taking this med for many years. Luckily my bone density has been great! Although, I did get knocked over by a Labradoodle that I rescued and in his excitement to see his humans, he knocked me over and I landed on my left hip and as soon as I hit the ground, I knew I’d done something to it. Geez, it's like you guys are going through my files! I've had to take boatloads of prednisone over the years, and am still on a low dose, and have (had , I guess) osteoporosis. Between Fosamax, some extra D3, and a bit more bone building activity I've built hip and pelvic density back. Still working on the spine. Good stuff!
Great information!! Looking forward to future videos of having a specialist on and talking about the meds. Looking forward to hearing some risk vs. benefit information about the meds you mentioned.
Thank you guys!! Luckily my job that I’ve been doing for 30 yrs requires some heavy lifting. And about 11,000 steps a day. So I guess I’ll stop complaining about my physically taxing job and be thankful instead😁

Thanks for all you both do! I fractured my tibial plateau skiing a few days ago. My grands say it’s because I avoid milk although I do very occasional cheese. You talk about creating a video around dairy. I’d love to see that, but it doesn’t seem to be here anywhere. Please remember that one - you have a family debate to solve!
Hi Christine. Dairy is in the works. None of us need dairy - it is made for baby cows. Low calcium is not the cause. Vitamin D deficiency and menopause or post menopause are common causes. You can settle the debate. It’s not about the milk!
Love these videos, thank you doctors. Hopefully in an other video on osteoporosis you will talk about MCAS as a cause of osteoporosis and secondary osteoarthritis. It’s a hideous illness and slowly effects many systems in the body, but most docs are uninformed about it and many haven’t even heard about of it. It’s believed 15%-20% of the population is effected, but diagnosis is very challenging and in the end, it’s a diagnosis by exclusion. I’ve been given this diagnosis ( provisional ) about a year ago, after decades of horrific musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal symptoms, blood in urine for 40 years etc… Some years back, I was told, nothing was wrong, it was all in my head, unfortunately for patients, such doctors are doing great damage. BTW, I recently had left THR and already given a date for right THR. Many other smaller joints, give me symptoms. Please doctors, get to know this disorder and make video about it. While there is no cure currently, MCAS can be arrested or at least slowed down, with specific diet and/or meds. No one should be debilitated and live a miserable existence because of it. Thanks ahead.
I am 57 and was recently diagnosed with osteoporosis and I have rheumatoid arthritis and already take Humira for that…immediately both my ra doc wanted Prolia. And my primary suggested fosamax…and told me to take calcium which no one had ever said prior…not one mention of exercise…these drugs are so scary. It seems as though they just leave it up to you to research online instead of giving you direction…am I by myself or do others have this issue? I would love to hear your take on these meds. You mentioned you would do another video on them…I would love to see that…you guys are so great that’s for your information.
Hi Doctors I always look forward to watching your new videos as they are so informative and helpful. I have just been prescribed a medication for osteoporosis based on a dexa reading of 2.5 and would like to watch your coming video on osteoporosis medications as soon as when it’s available. I have been hesitating in taking the medicine which was prescribed two weeks ago. I don’t smoke, I have a hard seltzer once in a blue moon but I have a couple of coffee each day. Do you think coffee hinders the absorption of calcium and leads to osteoporosis? I understand there are other factors too. Thank you so much for all the good work.
Hi E L. Small amounts of coffee are likely ok and have been associated with other health benefits. The medication is necessary for many. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I’ve been diagnosed with osteoporosis since May. 2022. Given medication to take once a week on an empty stomach after taking I should not lie down for 30 minutes. I should drink a lot of water while taking. I started to have stomach issues I told my pharmacist. I started to burp sourness. I read of the side effects. Side effects wasn’t good. I get off I’m feeling much better. Less pain. I take my calcium with D3. Do my walking and try going up n down the stairs very often. Lift a bit of weight carefully. Speak about the medicine for it. Thanks
@@jannetsimms2320 I appreciate very much your very informative reply. Good to know the possible stomach issues. I haven’t started taking mine yet. The Physician Assistant said that I would need to stop taking the medicine for three months before any dental surgery. Since I may need one so I have not started taking it. I am taking K2 vitamin which helps with bone metabolism. Please research or check with your pharmacist/doctor. The PA ok’s with the K2. I buy K2 from Costco but it comes with 5000 IU of D3. So I don’t take calcium supplements as they usually come with D3. I eat yogurt and drink calcium enriched almond milk everyday and make sure I have 1200 mg of calcium daily. It’s very nice of you to respond to my comment. Good luck with your next DEXA.
@@EL-qg6wm thanks. I do my walking also. I’ll continue do research . I try drinking the green drink. I love to watch n listen to the doctors. Breath of air.
Thank you docs for this great information. I am over 60 and broke my wrist 2 years ago. I also have a late onset form of muscular dystrophy (OPMD) so my proximal muscles are weakenIng. I also know that I am osteoporotic and was informed by a neuromuscular specialist several years ago of very low vitamin D levels. Long story short, I have increased my vit D and then asked my GP to have another blood test to see if I am at an optimal level. The doctor says it’s not necessary (Ohip doesn’t cover it?). I guess I will never know!
“Don’t go to the picnic” 🤣coupled with the surgical lights that look like they are coming out of yours heads, has put me into a giggle fit, thanks for being you
I have 2 hip replacements can I have an osteoporosis scan done? I have been told NO and what about MRI? Please be safe and get more sleep because you're VIP to us!
Unfortunately I'm going back on Pantoprazole which I think is the primary cause of my Osteoporosis due to an over active gut, also have loads of Osteoarthritis, I've been taking Risedronate for years. Great show.
I’m a 75 yo woman who has always been active and to this day I’m an avid walker, so was stunned and scared when my doctor told me two weeks ago that my lower spine was in the T range you just spoke about, and was so “”lacey” it could collapse when I’m just sitting and advised me not to lift anything over 15 pounds. He recommended the annual infusion therapy plus mega vitamin D supplements with calcum. Is this what you would recommend also? I signed up for 10k to be held next Sunday that I don’t want to miss. I told him about it he suggested I might want to cancel it, but if I go ahead with it, don’t fall. Now I’m scared, but still hate to cancel. Am I being foolish? . I also had a trip planned to Korea next month to go paragliding over Danyang Valley. So to say I was disappointed is an understatement. I came home and just cried. Is it safe to say that this diagnosis is the beginning of the end of my life as I knew it? I want to be careful and do what the doctor tells me, but at the same time living life with the constant worry that my back will collapse at any moment is no quality of life. Is it possible the infusion therapy and vitamin D supplements will reverse this diagnosis?? BTW. I neither drink nor smoke.
Hi Donna. Sorry to hear this. It certainly can be disappointing. It is quite possible that therapy with the infusion, vitamin D and calcium can get you back into the safe zone. As for the paragliding probably put that on hold. The race is up to you and your doctor. We understand how frustrating it can be. Hang in there and with time your bone density will likely improve. All the best. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Good video. I've been thinking I should talk to my doctor about this because my mother had severe osteoporosis and my oldest sister has some, though much more mild. I don't smoke and rarely have a drink but I was found to be Vitamin D deficient recently. My doctor gave me a prescription for Vit D. I really need one of those tests.😣
I recently had a compression fracture of L1, after an extremely bad fall. Went to the ER. I had Xrays, CT scans, MRI's, bloodwork, the works. MRI showed I had osteopenia. Interesting, though the bloodwork showed low hemoglobin, low platelets, very high blood calcium levels. I had Graves Disease and then RAI therapy, been on Synthroid 25 years. My brother has Parathyroid disease. Should my PTH be tested? Is it possible to have thyroid problems and parathyroid, also? I'm thinking osteopenia might be related to the parathyroid, after watching your video. The hospital told me none of this, just sent me home with copies of my test results. Also showed gallstones, distended bladder, they didn't tell me that, either. Thank you for this timely video. You gave me more info than 5 different docs in that hospital. ❤
I just was 21 for the 58th time. A lot of people my age "fall then break their hip" in reality they broke the hip which led to the fall. I have been on Vitamin D3 (the real active form) because I don't get enough sun to convert D1 to D2. Even if I did my old kidneys don't convert D2 to D3 as well as they used to. I also take 600mg of Calcium a day. These are the current recommendations. Make sure your doctor knows about OLD people or get one that does.
I think Kale might be OK if it is mixed with something else like being thrashed to death in a blender with peaches in juice then poured over ice-cream.
With my knee surgery I lost inches in my height. I had a bone density scan and My back has lost some density! I agree on the kale! I don't like it.🌱🍀😁😁! Thanks again Docs! 😇😇
I’m screwed lol. I’m supposed to take PPI and get a Prolia injection every six months. But then I was told to go off the Prolia because I was having a wisdom tooth pulled, but covid happened so my GP wasn’t seeing patients in person so no Prolia shot. I have compression fractures in my lower back which causes significant pain if I exercise too much. So I put up and shut up.
Thanks for talking about hyperparathyroidism! Can you do a video on this to spread the word? My mom and grandma both experienced severe spine disfiguration due to osteoporosis. As I age over 50, I’ve been trying to prevent the same fate for me… I’m a yogi and athlete, I eat a healthy plant based diet and of course I pester my medical team with my concerns. Recently, a bone specialist saw that I had elevated calcium in my blood and upon further testing found elevated parathyroid hormone. Maybe this is what might have caused osteopenia on my DEXA scan and my family’s history with post menopausal fragile bones? 6 months after a quick surgery, I am no longer osteopenic. I actually increased bone density at 56!! But imagine if I had not discovered this condition and it continued to leach calcium out of my bones for decades. Please help spread the word!
Thanks for doing this topic, very timely for me as I’ve just been diagnosed with it and started the dreaded Actonel. Everything I read about medication is controversial. I hope you will discuss pros and cons of medication. I read Zoloft could be a contributing factor, is it worth stopping it? I’m 68 and try to stay active. I appreciate your educational videos! 😊
what do you do if you have been doing running, walking, strength trining, general exercises all your life, at 65 you have bone density of a 30 yr old, then all of a sudden at 70 you have osteoporosis in back bone lumbar fusion. medication isn't the problem
Great videos.. very informative. I don't want to take calcium because of my CAC score of 399. So yogurt, cottage cheese, what else. Please still trying to like kale
You two guys are like the modern Hans and Franz. You are here to get us pumped up! Hey Docs what about the corticosteroid in a few sprays of fluticasone? Any studys on steroids not taken oral or in the syringe?
Hi Terry. It is an inflammatory condition that leads to severe degeneration of the joints and ultimately fusion. We can add it to the list for sure. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Well I'm toast 😲 lol.. I have RA, Gastroenteritis ,Parkinson's and a couple other autoimmune's. I had to get on Omeprazole just to stop the sickness 🤢. Looks like I'll be adding a lot of kale 🥬 milk 🥛 and chicken 🐔 wings 🤣🤣 Great video Dr Z & Dr W
Hey Doc's, so after my rotator cuff repair surgery on 1/25/23 about a week later my pelvic bone was in alot of pain. Turns out I went from Osteopenia to Osteoporosis. Nothing happened to cause the fracture. Does Vitamin K really help?
😅What about taking calcium supplements? I am 74, have osteopenia, but I take a quality calcium supplement (Phyto Therapy) which has Vit D3, Vit K1, Magnesium included. 3 softgels = 1,000MG of calcium. I understand that the body can only absorb 500MG at a time, so best to spread out taking this supplement over the day, with meals. The calcium is derived from 6 different sources. What do you think about taking calcium supplements?
Great video, as usual...but looking for answers to these questions: What are your opinions of the controversial bone density building medications? Osteostrong is now in London, Ontario (started in the States) and its membership seems to be increasing. Its programs are designed to improve bone density. Are you aware of it, and what do you think of it?
I love your videos. Thank you. Is there any evidence that post breast cancer medications ( tomaxafin or anestasol) cause arthritis to get exponentially worse? I noticed that within the first year of taking these drugs my arthritis has gone nuts. Had to have my left hip replaced last year and now the right hip is starting to click and hurt. My knees are getting quickly worse and other places that have never hurt are becoming ridiculously painful. I am 61, always been physically active ( used to run, 20 yrs Tang Soo Do,mountain climbing, biking, and I have a physical job) so there is some wear and tear, but this increase seems very rapid.
Hi Lara. Not sure about the evidence but we have heard this. Chemo particularly is hard on so many parts of the body. Wishing you all the best. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Hi Nora. So the glucocorticoids used to treat lupus can cause osteoporosis and some studies also seem to show that the disease itself leads to osteoporosis so definitely worth talking to your doctor about treatment to reduce your fracture risk. Thanks for watching and subscribing
When Dr Paul looks at Dr Brad with that look of deeply depleted hatred 🤣 Where fun goes to dyeeeee Ha ha 😂 I wonder how many viewers stopped mid-video and unfollowed -L O L- just kidding, I think it’s hilarious. You guys are great. Thank-you both for the killer educational journal club sesh!! Have a drink, and smoke a dart 😂Cheers Fellas
If I'm 66 and I've had a couple of falls due to activities in the last two years but nothing has broken would it be safe to assume I'm not at a great risk for osteoporosis? Yet
Greens totally and watercress keep moving and lift weights skip the dairy it causes inflammation you’ll get more calcium from your greens oh and jump or even hopping helps

If you can afford it you need to find a doctor who will help you get medication. VitD is good etc., but it won’t rebuild bone.

At our age what else is there to do except work on our bone density!! I have the time now that I'm retired. Good luck!
Can't wait for the osteoporosis Dr, I have it, I'm 63 ugh 😩
Yes Carol it is so common. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Thanks my great aunt had this on her back
Yes very common Marcia. Thanks for watching and subscribing
@@TalkingWithDocs Thanks! Can’t wait for the video to share! Just had this conversation with a friend this morning. No one believes me.
Hi Ruth. Sorry to hear this. We can add this to our list. Mast cell activation can be a very debilitating problem. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Why have I only heard the good advice "Feed your bones while you can" once?
It's just too true, people beware!
Yes Josee! Thanks for watching and subscribing
Yea it’s complicated. It’s on the to do list for sure
Well, I have a friend, smoked since she’s 14, now 66, no osteoporosis, myself, no smoking, not a “drinker,” I have osteoporosis!
Oh man Maria. Not a reason to start! Thanks for watching and subscribing
Maria I feel your pain. Same here! Go figure.
You have not mentioned about yours and your friend diet and exercise. Please let me know thank you from Johannesburg South Africa 👍💕
Her lungs must be smoked up, keep doing the best you can and best not to compare, keep exercising so a fall/tripping is less severe!
Docs what about Stevia? I use Stevia? Is it bad as well?
I have severe osteoporosis and I was getting Evenity shots for a year and now my doctor has me on Prolia one injection every 6 months.
Hope that helps
Hi Nicole. Yeah we think there is the option to pay yourself but not common. Thanks for watching and subscribing
“Don’t go to the picnic” 🤣coupled with the surgical lights that look like they are coming out of yours heads, has put me into a giggle fit, thanks for being you
Glad we could oblige Gatekeeper 365. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I have 2 hip replacements can I have an osteoporosis scan done? I have been told NO and what about MRI? Please be safe and get more sleep because you're VIP to us!
Hi Byrute. We believe that you can. You can also have an MRI but if it is in the hip area it becomes less useful. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I have it too, as does my sister and a brother
Oh man Tim. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Unfortunately I'm going back on Pantoprazole which I think is the primary cause of my Osteoporosis due to an over active gut, also have loads of Osteoarthritis, I've been taking Risedronate for years. Great show.
Oh man S. it’s complicated sometimes. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
You guys changed places😄... Good info.
Trying to mess you up.
Good luck Pancha. Most people have low vitamin D. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Love you two ❤❤
Thanks!
Oh yeah- Love the new caps.
Why thank you. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Great video
I have this, chemotherapy really took a toll on my bones. :(
It can be brutal Lisa. Best of luck with your treatment. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I know of Hans and Franz…. Good topic docs
Thanks Carleen. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Super video. Could you please tell me if a Dexa scan can show a spine fracture? Many thanks.
Whew!! Great intel on osteoporosis. That and arthritis not a great combination as we age, eh?
Nope Jennifer but there are some solutions. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I have had osteopenia for years. I get a density scan every two years.
Good call Glenda
Have you done a video on osteoporosis treatment options?
Well explained, thanks!
You are welcome Pallet Cabin. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Thanks for sharing JAY and happy birthday. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I think Kale might be OK if it is mixed with something else like being thrashed to death in a blender with peaches in juice then poured over ice-cream.
That’s aggressive James but Dr Zalzal agrees. Thanks for watching and subscribing
🤣🤣🤣🤣 oh my gosh....poor peaches 🥴
Kale is king. Smoothie is my way of getting dark green leafy and fruit.
Beauty. Thanks for watching and subscribing
With my knee surgery I lost inches in my height. I had a bone density scan and My back has lost some density! I agree on the kale! I don't like it.🌱🍀😁😁! Thanks again Docs! 😇😇
Oh man Darlene. All the best. Thanks for watching and subscribing
@@TalkingWithDocs Always I am working on making me stronger! Thanks for your information. Love you Docs!
It’s complicated sometimes qwincy. Thanks for watching and subscribing
We will add it to the list for sure. Thanks for sharing
Have the Docs done a show on cataracts and the different lenses that one can choose? TIA
Not yet Miguel but we can add it to the list. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I love Dr. Handsome and Dr.Adorable too!!!
Thanks Jennifer! Thanks for watching and subscribing
I love diet and exercise
We all need it. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Great topic. Doc just placed my wife on Prolia
Yes Doug. It is a very common problem. Thanks for watching and subscribing
😒
Thanks for doing this topic, very timely for me as I’ve just been diagnosed with it and started the dreaded Actonel. Everything I read about medication is controversial. I hope you will discuss pros and cons of medication. I read Zoloft could be a contributing factor, is it worth stopping it? I’m 68 and try to stay active.
I appreciate your educational videos! 😊
Welcome Susan. Worth a chat with your family doctor but don’t stop anything just yet. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Diet & Exercise sure comes up as helpful for a lot of conditions...maybe there's something to it? 🤔
Hmmm maybe. 😀. Thanks for watching and subscribing
what do you do if you have been doing running, walking, strength trining, general exercises all your life, at 65 you have bone density of a 30 yr old, then all of a sudden at 70 you have osteoporosis in back bone lumbar fusion. medication isn't the problem
Great videos.. very informative. I don't want to take calcium because of my CAC score of 399. So yogurt, cottage cheese, what else. Please still trying to like kale
Chia seeds, beans, lentils, other leafy greens, edamame and tofu. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Resorbtion can also happen to teeth, which is unfortunately pathologic and irreversible
Yes it can Chris and cause very debilitating problems. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Very important topic .
You two guys are like the modern Hans and Franz. You are here to get us pumped up!
Hey Docs what about the corticosteroid in a few sprays of fluticasone? Any studys on steroids not taken oral or in the syringe?
Hi Charles. Yes they can slowly reduce your bone density depending on the dose and frequency of use. Thanks for watching and subscribing
What about anaklosing spondilitis it’s a form of a arthritis isn’t it? Maybe you can do a video on that
Looks like I'll be adding a lot of kale 🥬 milk 🥛 and chicken 🐔 wings 🤣🤣
Great video Dr Z & Dr W

Hey Doc's, so after my rotator cuff repair surgery on 1/25/23 about a week later my pelvic bone was in alot of pain. Turns out I went from Osteopenia to Osteoporosis. Nothing happened to cause the fracture. Does Vitamin K really help?
Yes vitamin K helps vitamin d put more calcium in the bones and less in the vessels
@@TalkingWithDocs Awesome 😃 thanks Dr Z&W
Can you do a talk on SCAD?
We can add it to the list
Hi. Can you talk about IFI, after two years of PT and injections that gave little relief i have been dx with IFI and told i need a hip replacement
We can add it to the list for sure
Excellent guys - Is it worth taking ViT D in older age, purely proforlatically?
Yes!!! It makes a huge difference for many conditions and most people are deficient. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Hi Bonnie. We think it is important for most as we age.
No we aren’t but will look into it.
Hey Docs, what does Lupus do to your bones?
