I have two very similar versions of this setup using SmallRig cage I had while waiting for the Beastgrip. One version is for my iPhone 13 for lightening port with the Apple USB adapter with a short USB C to Lightening cable. for power. Then a USB A to USB C adapter for the Anker hub. I have done wired 3.5mm mic input via a 3.5mm to USB C adapter into the hub. That works. Now it is a wireless lavalier mic into the USB hub. It all works seamlessly. Also can use the Blackmagic Video Assist for a monitor since I had several. Now the big plus is ability to use the BMC app with multiple iPhones to do MultiCam recordings. So many opportunities have been opened up with the new iPhone 15 Pros and the BMC app. We have only begun to discover the possibilities.
Just got my BeastGrip DOF 3 last week. Super cool piece of gear. I have the same Beastgrip cage that you do. I do rum a 30mm prime lens as well. It all work very well with no issues. Thanks for sharing your setup.

@@initialfocus how about an extra camera? (that’s my next vid, not really iPhone overkill, kinda a different concept, but I am interested in trying a mega iPhone rig later). XLR would be nice, def wireless monitor, maybe some kind of mini gimbal so the phone is stabilised without needing to balance the weight of the battery, SSD etc… lots of options

This is deja vu.... I remember when the Panasonic DVX100 came out and everyone was using the P+S Tecknik 35mm adaptor to get better DOF... lol... now doing it with a cellphone. Round and round we go

I like the idea of using just your phone and the beast cage setup. Used it for awhile but once I got the fx30 there seem to be no point now I’m on the fx6 and that thang good God I love it. For around the same price as this set up for the beast cage you might as well get the fx30

Wow…can you get this setup on a DJI RS4 pro Gimbal.
You can’t have something inside the usb c port in the iPhone when you want to listen to playback. You have to unplug the rode to access the audio recording. Unless you monitor via the rode
Ha ha, now do it with Cooke Primes! (Seriously though please don't do that) The unique items required for a minimal version of this build (that wouldn't be required for another traditional cine camera rig) are the beastgrip case ($120) and the DOF adapter ($280) along with a usb adapter ($50) . That's $450. All to produce an overly soft image that only seems to achieves focus in the very centre of the frame. Hard pass from me I'm afraid, bur an entertaining video none the less!

Plus with the DOF, you have to use FF lenses. All of this together and you could just about get a used bmpcc 4k which has a wildly better image and codec. Super cool rig though.
Thats pretty cool, those iPhone 15 shots look just like my great great grandfathers Soviet camcorder from 1987 with a DoF adapter. Very neat! But I will stick to the Soviet camcorder, at least it only cost 2 Vodka and accepts DV tapes.

I’m not fully sold on the MK3. To be honest I really wanted to purchase one. I have nearly all cages and lenses BEASTGRIP makes so I was confident the MK3 was going to crush. The focus is not that sharp and it’s way too soft, I was able to see it on the mic once you focused on yourself. I just ordered the iPhone 15, couldn’t you just have used the 15’s cinematic mode instead with BEASTGRIP tele to shoot the end shot?
Did you try using the mk2 with the iphone15promax? If so how did it perform?
I think when we start seeing 1 inch sensors on the iPhone, a rig like this will be pretty sweet.
I think when 1 inch sensors is actualy 1" diagonal, a rig like this would still kinda weird

Am I crazy to imagine a 15 Pro Max adapter set up to use - say - a fujinon tv broadcast lens with rec/pause and zoom button ?! It seems power could be figured out easily enough but not sure there is any adapter that can handle all the lens demands. Haven't found a thing online which might indicate an impossible situation...
I’m slowly getting my rig together! Got a few things to get still. Waiting on the fresh crop of beastcage, dof adapter and L-bracket. Try the new Kondor Blue USBC Media hub please! Keen to see that in action! I have my rods, sliders, top handle and magnet fan from Neewer. Will most likely buy the monitor here in New Zealand and a Smallrig V-mount setup.

Bit of a stretch question but have you tried mounting an EF anamorphic lense onto DOF to replace the smaller 1.55x Mk2?
How are you getting your monitor hooked up while powering your phone? Are you also recording to an SSD while doing so? Trying to figure out a monitor setup for better viewing angles was going to use a phone mount with a second phone running filmic monitor to see the screen but as it’s wireless there would be latency which isn’t ideal

I watched this on a 65" TV. Looked great. I have most of the hardware except the BeastGrip products and lens. Iv'e got an AndyCine 4K monitor etc. It has an SD card slot for luts but no recording ability like the Atmos product. Hyperdrive hub laying around here somewhere. I'll get organized tomorrow.
as soon as I saw the beastgrip mk3 DOF adapter go on sale I impulsed bought immediately. How does the MKDOF3 compare to the DOF 2?
Whenever I try to use my USB C hub with my Atomos it shows video for a few seconds then goes black.

do you think the Anker 541 would work with the universal beastgrip rig?
If you use a right angle usb c adapter and aim it backwards it will work. It won’t work having the ports aimed forward. Just tested

Hey Michael. I see you going HDMI out of iPhone to an external monitor. Doesn’t the video output of iPhone 15 pro only 60fps regardless if Blackmagic app set to record at 24fps? I’d love to output to a wireless device like an accsoon or hollyland into a playback vtr setup but QTAKE can’t take 60fps. Am I missing something?are your external wireless monitors receiving a 24fps signal?
It's super fun that you did this and I enjoyed the video.
I also think that, practically, this makes no sense. You're basically buying a phone for $1500 as a dedicated camera. There's much better uses for that kinda cash.
What if you already own the phone and want to get into cinematography? Wouldn't it be cheaper to rig out your very capable phone than spend money on a dedicated camera that you have to rig out anyway? I think people are missing the point to this. Even a $600 Galaxy S23 FE or iPhone 14 have very competent cameras that can output really nice clean photos/video that are easily color gradable when recording in Log or RAW.
The fact is a S23FE using a DoF adapter outperforms my 8 year old Canon DLSR in both low light performance and dynamic range (when recording in cinema DNG Raw). Phones have made leaps and bounds, I think we're at a point where setups like the one in the video aren't ridiculous, it's actually smart cost saving and makes for a great entry level cinema camera since everyone already owns a phone.
@03chrisv a few things here
1. I shoot weddings and social media videos for small businesses. Outside of a shotgun mic, I've never rigged my camera.
2. If you're rigging up your phone, you can't use it as a phone.
3. Shooting in 10 bit is hard on your battery. I watched someone shoot a wedding on their iPhone and they had to charge it 3x. That's going to really shorten the life of the battery.
4. When you're rigging your camera with another lens, you're putting a hat on a hat. Your pulling in light through multiple lenses. That's going to cause problems.
Use the right tool for the job
@karlsma7245 Great 👍 This simply isn't for you if you can't see a use case for your workflow, however others can. Nobody said this is an ideal setup for doing wedding jobs, this setup is really geared towards cinematographers making short films or content for TH-cam, not photographers or videographers doing jobs at venues and events.
At any rate I still stand by what I said earlier, this setup or something like it would make for a good entry-level cinema camera. If someone is an aspiring cinematographer, especially on a budget, then using a modern phone that they already own and slapping a DOF adapter onto it with some used glass is a viable option without breaking the bank. If they're truly serious about their craft, they can buy themselves a FX3 after they get a little experience under their belt, they can even reuse the lens they bought for their smartphone rig. Nobody is saying to buy a new phone for the purposes of using it primarily as a camera which is what you seemed to imply in your first post.
@03chrisv You have always been able to use a phone for making short form content. MKBHD shoots his car reviews on an iPhone. You want to do that, knock yourself out.
What I'm saying is that many TH-camrs are pushing that instead of buying a dedicated camera, you should buy the 15 Pro Max as your 1st camera. That's a terrible idea for all the reasons I said above.
You obviously wouldn't buy a phone just for this. You can get a bmpcc for less and enjoy a much better picture and codec.

No because you would already own the phone so any additional costs just goes to rigging it, which you would have to spend on the FX30 or S5ii anyway. This is basically allowing you to repurpose the phone that you already own to be a pretty sweet camera rig. That's always going to be cheaper than buying another camera body and rigging it out. Nowadays modern phones are very capable, they have much better processors and AI capabilities than any $5,000 standalone camera and can record in 10 bit and even 12 bit raw/log up to 8k 30fps.
The only shortcoming is sensor size, but even that isn't really an issue since they're getting better and better every year. Smartphones with 1 inch sensors basically offer the same dynamic range and light performance as micro four thirds cameras. Add in AI enhancements and they can even perform close to APS-C. All these phones really need is the ability to use real camera lenses, which is what the Beastgrip DOF adapter is for.

@@03chrisv That's a lot of gymnastics to justify this setup. First off not everyone already owns a 15 pro. You are talking about a $1200-1500 phone that's marketed as a pro camera and what people will be looking at to upgrade. "AI capabilities" primarily only applies to photos or cinematic mode and not log or raw. It's difficult to overstate just how far ahead mirrorless is in low light/high iso performance. In any situation that doesn't have ideal lighting i.e. night, indoors or even outdoors in the shade, a mirrorless will absolutely crush the phone sensor. Iphones use sony sensors and sony mirrorless camera sensors are 5-10x the size. In this video he is using a $1200 full frame lens adapted to the iphone which cannot utilize it's full capability. There is no scenario where using this type of setup is advantageous over just using an fx30 for a price that is similar or cheaper. The sample footage is also not very impressive. This is how you make film making more difficult and frustrating than it needs to be.
@adamvictor9124 You don't need an iPhone 15 Pro. My Galaxy S20 that's worth $200 to $250 outperforms my quite capable 8 year old Canon DLSR in just about every way (including low light performance) other than not being capable of shallow depth of field outside of macro shots.
I could literally use my S20 in a setup like in this video, install an app that allows me to record in Log or better yet even RAW Cinema DNG and the end result would be miles better than anything I can pull out of my Canon DLSR. It's actually quite amazing what you can get out of a phone sensor in post when recording in Raw Cinema DNG since each frame is literally a full blown raw photo. A scene that looks completely crushed because you kept the ISO low can be brought back with great clarity and minimal noise, it was actually mind blowing when I first saw it.
The DoF adapter actually allows you to make full use of the full frame lenses. There is no crop factor, the adapter focuses the image down so the smaller phone sensor can capture the whole image.
If a newbie on a budget wanted to get their feet wet in cinematography I would recommend using their phone (something they already own) with a DoF adapter and a couple of used lenses versus spending more and buying a FX30. After some practice and skill building and maybe making a short film or two if they're truly passionate about their craft and feel like their phone is holding them back then they can go splurge on a more professional setup and even reuse the lenses and gear they previously bought.
Though with each passing year smartphones are getting better and better, faster than traditional cameras are improving. In fact a stacked 1 inch sensor on a phone would probably outperform even a modern day MFT camera in low light and high ISO performance, maybe even nip at the heels of a modern APS-C/Super 35. I bet in 10 years the MFT camera industry will be almost absorbed into the smartphone industry, there will very little standalone cameras to choose from.
@@03chrisv Ok then why not use a 2008 Razr you bought for 5 dollars at a garage sale. The context of this video is using a 15 pro, rigging it out and using "pro" features like shooting log. Presumably with the intention of taking professional quality video. Not "using what you have to take the best video you can". And if that is the route you are going, you are better served just using a real camera. People act like you need to sell a kidney to get a decent camera when you can use a zv-e10 and get better quality video than any smartphone. Just like smartphones are improving so are mirrorless cameras, and sensor size is an issue that will never be overcome because of physics. You have the size of photosites, the wavelength of light and how much it can capture. Which is why Sony's 12mp full frame sensor has the best low light capability. With a phone you have to work overtime to get worse quality video. I recommend watching Mark Bennett's zv-e10 vs 15 pro video. Or watch any cinematic low light of a fx30 in 4k on youtube and compare that to anything from an iphone. It's night and day.

Is that i get hdmi out on the hub connected to external display but for some reason the phone doesn’t want to charge even though everything is plugged in. Please advise 😭
The easiest solution is to just use a MagSafe wireless charger.
This is pretty awesome, which monitor did you use? Was looking into the Atomos Ninja V, I think that could also be used as the recorder to the external SSD.
As far as hub's are concerned, I was really looking for one that just has 3 USB-C and 1 HDMI, but I haven't found one like that yet 😢 I think I am gonna go with the Anker 4 in 1 maybe?
I am still researching, but I would ideally like a case (maybe moment) that can use a t-mount anamorphic, and/or a VND on top of that (so it could also be used outside of the rig).
I am using DJI Wireless Mic and it is working great so far.
For battery, was the one you used V-Mount just because you can attach it to the cage easier (did the cage you were using have a v-mount on it)?
Either way, great video, if I had cine lenses the DOF adapter would be super cool I think.

I’ve tried recording the h2.65 apple log into the ssd, the longer the footage, even it’s short, inside the Blackmagic app, it keeps blinking when it’s saving, need to wait quite a while, and sometimes stuck in the saving process, do you have the same problem?
That means whatever drive you’re using or cable isn’t writing the data fast enough. I haven’t had that issue. Try to make sure you’re using a faster cable or drive?

I purchased a fan and that doesn’t happen anymore. Black Shark Fun Cooler 3 Pro. Plus the screen never dims now.

Just buy an external fan, though in cooler weather or room temperature it should last much longer before overheating, if at all.

You should exchange the iPhone 15 for the Mi 13 Ultra and use MotionCam to record videos in RAW format... How much more quality do you think more than 4000Mbps can have over the best codec on the iPhone 15? Unless the iPhone has Apple ProResRAW, which I know it doesn't have, there's no comparison.
A small detail: Root the Mi 13 Ultra and change a few things in the system and you can record 8k video in RAW just like the RED V-Raptor
Sorry for the exaggerated comment, but when it comes to video quality, lately I'm having a tendency towards absurd levels of data capture quality... This means removing as much compression as possible that could degrade some aspect of the image

For $1500 you can get A LOT of a much better REAL camera and lenses that can give you something like REAL IQ worth this rig. This is all absurd.
