- The SWAT-T has some advantages and some disadvantages. This tourniquet does fold nice and small for a good EDC TQ. I also go over how to apply SWAT-T to a buddy.

When I was doing wilderness SAR work and spent some ER time the Dr was a great help. One morning he checked my gear and saw 2 TQs, he left and came back with 4 ace bandages. He told me if I had room in the pack to always carry more than I need and the Ace bandages work well as a TQ and to just add one on top of the other if it is not tight enough. Small town clinics with just one Dr have a ton of tricks they use. He told me my rule should be "No matter what get the patient to a Dr alive"
Ace bandages make great pressure bandages.

Self-aid is done by using your teeth to hold on to one side while wrapping the other, you can then release the side from your teeth once you've gone around enough to keep the pressure on. The self-aid application works fine.
I carry two SOFTT-W tourniquets. One on my belt and one in a med kit. I carry the the SWAT tourniquet as a secondary option for use as a tourniquet but I see it more likely to be used to keep a pressure dressing in place. Thats why I chose to include it in my kit even though I already had two tourniquets. One thing I also carry is a shemagh which has so many medical uses.

This can be made into a regular style tourniquet too. Tie knots in it and use any stick to twist it. Or lay it out full length and double/triple fold it in its width then puncture two holes through, insert a stick and twist. So this tourniquet can be a good self use and has many uses in operation. Many times you have to improvise and adapt kit.........I just explained some but there will be others if you think it through.
First tuck is done with the end in the mouth, then just wrap it as you normally would.

I am volunteer at the red cross. Unfortunately we aren't allowed to use a tourniquet although I have the training for it. We have learned to use gauze and hold pressure on the wound.
But, if it happens that somebody lost their limb, I will ignore the rules and put on an tourniquet!

But you can use the SWAT-Tourniquet very good for a dog for example. In some special forces the dogs have own "IFAKs" with a SWAT-T. Somebody would say that you dont have to save a life of a dog but it saved many dogs lifes
Pro tip. a BP cuff makes a great Pressure bandage apply bandage pump up 50ish . can also use as tourniquet 150-200. down side. your BP cuff is no longer able to take the BP.
Im guessing you probably want to use a nice bp cuff for this since the cheaper ones might not be made for that pressure?

You have a lot of great information. I’m probably not watching these in order so forgive me if I’m repeating a comment. As you wind the tourniquet around the “limb” you wind off the top of the roll. Why? It’s been easier for me to turn the roll around and wind off the bottom.

What is the shelf life of the s.w.a.t. tourniquet. Since it’s basically rubber do I need to replace it every year? MikeinMinnesota
It comes sterile wrapped in a UV proof bag. It's good forever until you take it out and play with it.

Honestly I think the only reason these aren't more popular is because they don't look as tacticool on a belt or armor carrier. They can be used for a tourniquets, slings, wrapping for pressure bandages, wrapping for splints, wrapping damaged limbs in place, etc. But they don't make high speed ninja operator accessories for it.
I assume that you can remove it from the packaging when you put it in your bag? Since you're not putting it directly on the wound

Anything that can have more than one use probably deserves space in my kit. These things may not be the best tourniquet, but since they can also be a compression bandage or a sling, they warrant taking up a little space.
Think you could use one of these to make a cravat-style tourniquet?

@@xifel72 the CAT is a much better tq. This thing can be useful, but it's not a good tq. Add a SWAT, keep the CAT.
@@MPD90 It is much harder to stop blood flow with a SWAT, and you'd have a hard time doing it on yourself. As a TQ, the CAT is more reliable. A TQ that doesn't work isn't good EDC.

You can if you really feel like it but tourniquets are like splints in that the only limit is your imagination basically if you can tie it around the limb and stick something long under it you can make a tourniquet. Of course in a perfect scenario you'll have what you need though

🤔 so this vs a RATS, which would you suggest for edc? I’ve bought a CAT, but it rides in my backpack. For something to ride in my pocket, which would you suggest? I’m leaning towards the RATS.
I like this and the RATS for buddy applications that may include kids, geriatric or canine. BUT I wonder how the elastic will hold up should it be in my trunk first aid for a few years befofe I need it.
RATS is trash.
So I have a giant roll of red PT elastic exorcise band. Can I just cut a length off that and carry it as a secondary tourniquet?

Might look into a TK-4, also. Easier one-handed operation & you might have an injured hand/arm. Plus, you can wear it like a belt under your shirt to save pocket space.

You mean wrapping it around the stock or something like you would around a limb? Might be a good idea- might be all you can grab is your weapon & then you have some med-kit type of stuff on it.
+Atkrdu yeah if the pouch had Molle or something and I can run some 550 through the sling attachment points on the stock since we run single points. Or something that slides onto the sling itself if I could keep it from sliding all over the place

I'm a RATS guy myself! In my humble opinion it's the most user friendly and versatile TQ on the market.
For the same effectiveness rate I prefer to hope and pray

i have one of those rubber exercise bands that looks basically the same as a swat t tourniquet , i already have a CAT , does it make any sense to keep that band in my backpack as a second tourniquet ?
I used my teeth , let gravity hang my arm down. Then used my teeth to hold one end then put tq over the arm. Wrapped and pulled few wraps till the bright red quit .

Tony Crimm Forget bout a face mask!! Hands On CPR is what’s taught now to the general public. You’re not going to be adding much O2 with your breathe. The key is to keep circulating the oxygenated blood still in the body until help comes. But if you have to have one, any from the Red Cross are great and you’re donating to a even worthier cause!
@@bat29man that's not true. It's still being taught 30:2. They changed it from hands only back to compression and breath. I'm a CPR/FA AED instructor.
What about putting celox in the wound after wrapping the tourniquet? That way, when you unwrap it, it wouldn't bleed (or at least, bleed so bad). Also, I thought cutting off blood flow was the point? Would it work to maintain circulation through the tied-off area & still close up the artery?
Maybe in some situations where transport would take many, many hours. In civilian EMS, once that TK is on, no first responder is going to take it off.
Ah, I see. What about it healing? Like if you stopped the blood, took off the tourniquet, and just bandaged things up (possibly with whatever vulneraries on it)- would things just reweave? Maybe it depends on the degree of injury? I'm wondering about major blood vessels, tendons, and nerves in particular.
I Hope you will answer this question. You have a wound and it is an artery, leg or arm. Could you use the tourniquet to stop the bleeding, then pack the wound, apply a pressure bandage, then slowly release the tourniquet to see if you have controlled the bleeding? I trust your opinion and hope you can answer.

Yes you can apply a TQ and then wound pack. I would look at doing this if it were going to be an extended time before I could get the patient to help. Extended time being past 3-4 hours.

5:30 Do you refer to a combat situation or also unharmful environment? I thought tourniquets should only be applied as a last resort, when pinching the artery, elevating the extremity and pressure bandages are of no use to stop the bleeding.
No, wound packing is slow. Your patient can bleed out quickly with a femoral artery pumping out.
Those techniques are good but have been "abandoned" for the quicker application of apply direct pressure or pressure bandage , allow "appropriate" time based on bleeding, then go to tourniquet in the event of life threatening bleeding. These techniques have even been being taught in American Heart Association First Aid classes since 2010 and were continued in the new 2015 guidelines. EMS has also adopted this manner of care for a few years now. The "old" way isn't bad but in a time of crisis it can "waste" precious time and allow for to much blood loss.
+Brian Ferrante there's no reason to not apply a tourniquet, in the civilian side you're going to be able to get them to medical care long before any damage is caused by a tourniquet. TQs are quick and effective and you can always reassess and convert to packing/pressure dressing as needed.

I would, it is both cheaper and more compact that a cat tourniquet and as be demonstrated it makes for a good compression band for compression bandages. I like to keep one of these in my pocket and a cat 7 in my backpack.

Do you wound pack after applying a tourniquet? And if you do wound pack would you apply an Israeli bandage? Or could you just apply the Israeli bandage alone? Or just wrap the wound in gauze after putting on a tourniquet?
Wound packing is mainly for junctional injuries like a shoulder or hip area. If you wound pack you need something to keep it there so yes an IB would work. An IB could work alone but it’s have to very very tight. You can wrap the wound if you want but that’s just keeping debris out really if the bleeding has stopped
How slippery does it get when bloody (or wet)? Will the tuck stay? or is there a chance of it sliding out?
same question I had- curious about this as well.
From everything I have seen it does stay tucked, now I think it would be harder to handle once it got bloody. I have not used this one in the field.
Try holding the end in your teeth then wrap your arm. Might work in a pinch.

I've heard that the tension loosens if it gets wet after applied. Do you know of any real world applications of this particular tourniquet? The pluses you mention make it a great secondary tourniquet to keep in your kit. For now I've been keeping cravats as secondary tourniquets.
No real world applications this one. I spoke to a few people who have and they liked it for buddy aid.
I know I'm way late to the party here, but I know green side (Marine Infantry) Navy corpsmen who have used the SWAT T in Iraq and Afghanistan, on humans as well as military working dogs. They said it's a fantastic piece of gear in a ton of ways, and if they were concerned about slippage, they'd run a strip of 100 mph tape around it to lock it in.
