I absolutely love the lighting in this mod. Good lighting can really help bring a scene together and help sell the atmosphere, and I think Build2001 nailed it.
Beyond the wonderful lighting and atmosphere that this mod has captured, I greatly appreciate the custom assets, specificlaly the NPC's. One of my biggest gripes with source engine mods is when developers use the HL2 models as their base for building a character, which I feel often leads to some strange looking NPC's. Understandably not everyone wants to make entirely new models, so reskins can make the development process easier in some cases. However, the unique conbine, zombies, and citizens demonstrated throughout the video have their own distinct style. The same can be said for the world geometry, lighting, sound, etc. All of these factors come together nicely to make a truly unique experience that I feel captures the intentions of the developers of HL2 as close as possible to as they were in 2001.
This mod looks absolutely fantastic, I love that early 2000s dark and gritty atmosphere. Also i didn’t know about Valve using 3D mockups of levels and doing paint overs for concept arts. It’s interesting because that became a very common thing today in video games conception, but it feels like Valve were pioneers for using that kind of workflow at the time.
Amazing work Mister K! But if you dont do well, then you will be trapped in Rad's Basement like the rest of us...... Then we can all tell you how amazing this looks. Continue to be D A R K A N D G R I D D Y
I’ve been working for some time on a mod called 2002 Edition. It uses beta hl2 engine + mainly e3 2002 maps with gameplay improvements and a few other maps from that era. If you wish, I can send you a preview version of it
Without a doubt, the way these maps look, he could even make a standalone mod that can be its own game and not merely 'Half-Life 2 Beta-based Dark'n'Gritty Emulator' out of them. You can't deny that the style is basically that but I find the maps to be creative with their own distinct style. They'd make for a good basis for their own lore and gameplay packaged in early Beta aesthetics. Though that clearly is beyond the scope of these maps. Let alone the time it'd sink on top of the work that's already being done.
Previous versions also had a fully playable vertigo chapter that also used that main menu background map, personally I really liked it and I can't remember why it was removed
Really like mods that try their best to replicate Half-Life 2 Beta. You have this one, Missing Information, Raising The Bar Redux, you name it. Interesting stuff for sure.
that concept art method is similar to how some of the fallout 4 concept art is done, they would make an early block out for some level design or a weapon or vehicle model or whatever then the conceept artist would paint over that. Is neato
You only gave it a brief mention it in this vid, but rhe whole seperate mod dedicated to the vertigo map was absolutely incredible, they combined the classic vertigo map from the leak with of one of my favorite concept arts, and the lighting is gorgeous. Love this mod!
By watching this, i got that nostalgia felling from your old Half-Life 2 Beta lore videos. Maybe you should create videos about the retail game locations, in the same style as the Beta videos?
I have always dream of playing full version of this game beta (i mean not just release the beta but fully fix and everything final version of the beta from valve official). The concept actually alot more make sense to me, where we become the slave of the combine, so everything must be dark and depressed. Just imo.
Can you talk about or make a underrated / obscure/ not-usually-talked-about Half-Life 2 mod called 1187? It takes an original plot line of the player being a civilian before the 7 Hour War but during the Portal Storm that was waging on earth after the Black Mesa Incident, having you to travel through mostly urban or sub-urban areas. I attempted to look for more footage of that mod but its so obscure that i only found 2 full walk through videos about it.
Slightly off topic but who else thinks that, now that the Digsites are releasing content, that Halo CE and Halo 2 should get some mods similar to Half Life 2's Raising the Bar Redux and Dark Interval? That is to say mods that make the games into "What Could Have Been." Mods like this, Dark Interval, and Raising the Bar all fill me with wonder and CE and Halo 2 getting a similar treatment would be insane.
Hey RadHaz, can you make a video about Half-Life 2 Otis model mod that replace Barney? The mod is released from a year ago but they recently just done with the custom Otis voice work
You should make a video on how to get, install and explore the hl2 beta because a lot of people still don't know what you get out of the box when playing the og stolen build.
I'm one of the few people who finds HL2 to be lackluster and dissappointing since release. Maybe HL2 would've ended up like the retail version no matter what, but the BETA gave me the sense that the original concept was much more ambitious. I really wish I lived in an alternate reality where HL2 kept the dystopian dark aesthetic and remained more open like a Deus Ex, meeets Thief, meets Freedom Fighters.
There is a Mike Ehrmantraut jumpscare in this video. You have been warned.
Put your hazard away rad
For goodness sake, lol.
scary
timestamp jumpscare please

HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO ENJOY THIS DARK AND GRITTY WITHOUT MY CHILD LABOR!!!
Aw damn. Didnt realize this mod DIDNT HAVE CHILD LABOR

I need my child labor
@@RadiationHazardYTCOME ON NOW MAN YOU SHOULD KNOW ITS WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT!
Lighting too gud, not dark enough.
No child labor, not gritty 'nuf

never knew midnight club 2 music could fit half life 2 beta, but now seeing them together it just makes sense
My first Beta vid along with a few that came later, they all used this theme. It does mix in pretty well.
I was wondering what those songs were
I love the smaller mods like Cremation, this one is great as well.
In my opinion I think this mod is the most dark and gritty looking beta mod I’ve ever seen. Excellent work Mr. K!
Mister K 100% deserves the recognition, so thank you for the video Rad.
It definitely gives off a more dark and depressing vibe than RTB or DI. I cant wait for this to come out
The midnight club 2 music makes me remember your early beta videos.
Beautiful looking mod, cant wait to see if hes gonna do ravenholm and e3_town.
I absolutely love the lighting in this mod. Good lighting can really help bring a scene together and help sell the atmosphere, and I think Build2001 nailed it.

Bro has found another dark and hit the griddy mod that isnt a madman lmao, good job
Okay NOW I'm starting to get some ideas on a Half life 2 Beta Horror series with me voicing Gordon Freeman.
This mod looks absolutely fantastic, I love that early 2000s dark and gritty atmosphere.

Rªdhªz making his 1282916th video about dark and gritty halflife:
I’m so glad you made a video on this mod! By far one of my favourites, especially the vertigo levels. So good.
This mod is fantastic ,and has inspired me into making my own mod. Also you forgot the version 3 , the vertigo chapter. Amazing mod.

I like how city 17 after like a few hours after gordon arrives it turns into northern ireland
I had my volume all the way up because of the green website, so the intro made my ears go kaboom 💥
Really like mods that try their best to replicate Half-Life 2 Beta. You have this one, Missing Information, Raising The Bar Redux, you name it. Interesting stuff for sure.
So fun fact, that image workflow, where they start with block outs and draw over them, its what I was taught when designing product design in college
This mod is simple, but very dark and gritty!!!
I like the beta mods that feel like they were made in 2002/2003, it’s just how they look, it looks classic, kinda primitive
now I am become dark and griddy, watcher of radhaz
As of course, hl2 beta was bright and hopeful.
>:(
"IT GETS BETTER, WE'RE SO BACK!" - Scrapped Dr. Kleiner voiceline, 2000-2001 era.

As a person who did NOT read the comments i can admit my heart jumped out of my body and i shat myself
tbh this mod recreater the concept art from the hl2 beta is amazing
Truly dark and griddy, bravo Mr K
the Vertigo demo was also really good, surprised you didn’t talk about that
This dark and gritty atmosphere FAR BETTER than in original released version Half-Life 2. What a SHAME. This one had truly dystopian feel to it.
Wisely done, mister K. I will see you up ahead...oh, and the mod looks pretty good.
A dark and gritty HL 2 beta video from Rad Haz? Inject it directly in my veins!
Intro song goes hard asf
the mod looks really good! they look exactly like how hl2 beta wouldve
Might download this after i come back from vacation
One of the best mods based on the HL2 Beta. Very dark. It minds me Raccoon City from Resident Evil.
Fun fact: Google thinks this video is a song.
This video is listed on google as a song from an album called "infinite worlds"
I really this mod's goldsrc styled mapping, similar to the beta Borealis interior maps.
A mod which encompasses that *Euphoric* feeling!
By watching this, i got that nostalgia felling from your old Half-Life 2 Beta lore videos.

There's plenty more Beta map/lore videos to make. But after that sure.

Is that the motherfucking Midnight Club II main menu theme playing in the background?
Holy shit it fucking is

Yooooo is that the main background music from midnight club II?
you got a good sense of music choice my friend :)
the build of all hl2 mods
oh damn i thought this mod was cancelled, im glad its not
The real question here is: how dark and gritty is it?
On a scale of 1 to 10... I'd say yes.
@@RadiationHazardYT same

Oh I'd love for sure to see a recreation of CE's pre microsoft era, even if I know it'll be impossible to make it an RTS like originally planned
It would be great that -when- if Half-Life³ is released Valve gives away free TVs...because that will definetly happen.
Seems like a cool mod.
Mr K? More like Mr B(ased).
But srsly i love this aesthetic and am looking forward to even MORE!
Do you know this is dark and gritty but I love it I think Mr. K to do a good job
Hi RadHaz!
What is the darkest and grittiest beta mod you have ever played?
Cremation, I think. It's a small like this one. Never covered it in a video though.
Dark Interval comes real close to it.
Looking very great
Rad always delivering right on time for lunch
I love the beta
Raising The Bar: Redux is great too.
Hey RadHaz, can you make a video about Half-Life 2 Otis model mod that replace Barney? The mod is released from a year ago but they recently just done with the custom Otis voice work
🅱️ark and 🅱️itty
Hey very nice video Rad! Do you ever plan on making the mapping contest videos again? They were very enjoyable to watch
Yes now that I'm getting back into mapping, I might host another map contest.
@@RadiationHazardYT eyy thats good to hear, also im excited for the next mapping video, have a good one Rad also thank you for responding!
This mod gets the D'n'G seal of approval.
Beta half life reminds me so much of bladerunner
Imagine if someone were to make a VtmB mod based on the DnG beta atmosphere of HL2
Put your riot baton away waltuh
You should make a video on how to get, install and explore the hl2 beta
because a lot of people still don't know what you get out of the box when playing the og stolen build.

the half life 2 beta was dark and gritty
This mod so far looks the best imo
I've been gone awhile. Are we still hitting the gritty? 🥺
Absolutely
:D
