  • For Olek's installation - an entirely crocheted room - the gallery designers built a replica of the apartment in which she created it. But the measurements are off, and Olek has to improvise.

I love the idea as a piece of expression :) The crocheted people, though, scare the heck out of me! Either way, what a wonderful way to translate your crocheted art, as something that holds you safe and warm and comforts you, your home. At least, that's what I get out of it.

I saw this installation; it was fabulous when it was finished.

hey a huge thanks to the craftsman/preps
that built the walls - looked perfect - moving
windows is much more difficult than crocheting.

I know it’s 9 years ago, but trust me they are both incredibly difficult, crochet especially on such a massive scale

All art is temporary and ever-changing, as are all humans (artists). Brava for the unique take on crochet.

I can understand the passion behind the work however it’s not a free ticket to treat people negatively. That being said here she is being advertised by the Smithsonian channel.

Interesting but a whole room in crochet...no way. I crochet shawls, doilies, blankets and now starting to make crochet dresses and ladies shorts.

I kinda feel like she was rude to those people. It's not easy to be a crochet artist, but it is easy to be kind. Treat others how you want to be treated, Olek.

What I don't understand about art now is these artists want to do "installations" which most are temporary, and then take it down. Why not do more permanent art that will last the test of time? All this temporary art might get captured in video and photos, but when people want to go back and revisit the old art in person, it won't be around.

There is no lasting art, all materials can be undone, by time, accidents, vandalism. Saying this is on the same train of logic as "why do they put statues in public places if they're gonna be defaced" or even "why fall in love of there's the risk of having your heart broken". There is no single universal answer, but some of the things we have to understand is that art like this is not only a product to be consumed (which art can be without losing artistic value, or do, this is also subjective) it's also an experience to be had, to be present or to simply make it and put it in a place like this where it can be seen. Not everything has or needs a perfectly utilitarian reason to be.

I agree with the person who already responded. Art lasts forever, even if it tangibly doesn't. That's the point.
