    Totally deserved. Goodbye Girl is just as brilliant now, 35 years later. When Marsha is clutching his guitar in the rain, yelling "I love you!" and Richard yells, "Never mind that ! You're rusting my guitar!" and the brilliant David Gates starts singing the theme song.... does it get any better than that ? (I will say this, Marsha also should have won the Oscar. She got the Golden Globe though, and the BAFTA.) Love you Richard ++++++ Peace.

      And potentially split the vote? Not smart. Better to let the genre/"mainstream" performance in the same year convince on-the-fence voters to vote for you. Plus, it just makes your victory look stronger in hindsight. Two recent examples I can think of include Anne Hathaway winning Best Supporting Actress for Les Mis when she was in The Dark Knight Rises that same year and Jennifer Lawrence winning Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook when she was also in The Hunger Games.

    I just got done watching Goodbye Girl for the first time in years... it was one of my late mother's favorite movies and we would watch it every Saturday when I was a kid. Of course, the screenplay makes a little bit more sense to me now as an adult, it was almost like watching it for the first time. Richard Dreyfuss was amazing in this film, as was Marsha Mason. The ending had me in a tear or two while watching it just now because all I could think about was my mother, who passed away five months ago, but a beautiful memory nonetheless.

    I just watched "The Goodbye Girl" tonight for the very first time! Great performances by Dreyfuss, Mason and Cummings. I was a kid when this first came out, and I remember always seeing the scene of Dreyfuss pulling Mason's panties off of the shower curtain rod. After all these years it was nice to finally see what everyone was going to the movies to see back in 1977! The title song also brought back memories of hearing it on the radio back in the day.

      If you are referring in particular to American movies, I think it's virtually indisputable. The 70s were a decade when America took a good hard look at itself after the turbulent 60s. The reality it saw was reflected in film. But that reality was too much for us to bear, and we decided once again to escape from it. We had the 80s - an atrocious decade for American cinema - and haven't looked back from it since.
      Now, if you're referring to world cinema, I'd say 50s were the greatest.

    Really - Peter Firth gave the best performance by an actor in a leading role for EQUUS - but he was dumped into the supporting actor category - despite having more screen time than Burton. Dreyfuss had the double whammy of being in GOODBYE GIRL and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS that year which clearly helped.

    He REALLY DID NOT expect to win. I think he was genuinely shocked. Can you imagine -- being up against Richard Burton and Marcello Mastriani ? Wow ! -- but he DID genuinely deserve it ! He is an incredible actor. I will watch ANY movie that he is in. (was that his father that he was sitting next to on his left?)

I didn't see the movie till many years later, since I was 16 when it came out it wasn't "my kind of movie" I guess..lol, now it is one of my all time favorites and I cry at the ending every single time! You have to admit that the character Rocky Balboa could not have been portrayed by anyone else. Stallone brought Rocky to life!! Rocky won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1976.
      Rocky is considered to be one of the greatest sports films ever made and was ranked as the second in that category, after Raging Bull, by the American Film Institute in 2008.

    • @TheChannelTV-bt8em
      @TheChannelTV-bt8em 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +82sweetheart I enjoyed Rocky as a movie too... until Stallone turned that character into an obsession. He can't seem to play anything else even when he plays anything else. There was one exception with Cop Land. He was very good in that. As for winning best picture of 1976, it was one of the worst choices the academy ever made. The other nominees: Taxi Driver, Bound for Glory, Network, and All the President's Men, all of them superior films. Rocky was just an entertaining crowd-pleaser. More popular than genuinely artistic. That's not what the Oscars are supposed to be about. That's why you have peoples choice awards. And as a sports movie, it can't touch Chariots of Fire, Seabiscuit, or The Natural. Even as a boxing movie, it is way behind classics like Body and Soul (1947) and The Set-Up (1949) regardless of what the AFI says.

    Am I the only one who feels Richard Burton should have won the Oscar? He was so underrated through the years: Becket, Anne of the thousand days, Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf and Equus are masterclasses in acting, yet the Academy couldn't understand it. Such a shame we lost him so early, a great actor indeed.

    5.Woody Allen in Annie Hall- Woody Allen does his usual routine, but this is certainly one of his better variations, since the character fits his standard character more, and gives a little more depth to his persona that usual. (3.5/5)
    4.Richard Dreyfuss in The Goodbye Girl- Richard Dreyfuss is almost deathly annoying at the beginning, but he eventually gives a very good, and very charming performance as the film continues. (3.5/5)
    3. Richard Burton in Equus- Richard Burton does his best as he can without the very bad film he is in. He makes the monologues powerful despite the fact that the writing is so bad. (4/5)
    2. Marcello Mastroianni in A Special Day-Mastroianni is very good here creating a fascinating portrait of a very much repressed man who, slowly breaks open. Mastroianni is terrific all the way through. (4.5/5)
    1. John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever- Travolta really is great in his star making performance. Travolta gives a strong charismatic performance. I will admit this year is incredibly close for me. It was incredibly hard for me to chose between these top two performances, since they are both strong in fairly different ways. (4.5/5)
