@@RetroGameCorps Another great summary for newcomers and seasoned alike. One thing you could mention are primary and secondary units. Having a main gaming device and an accessory device. Sort of like playing your PS2 at home and PSP on the go, but more like having a bulky x86 for indoors which isn't replaced but complimented by a small ARM for outdoors. For me it's between two different types. Indoors/backpack/x86: Cheapest SteamDeck, or Fastest ROG Ally, or most expensive GPD Win-Max-2 are the standouts. Outdoors/pocket/ARM: Smallest RG353m, or faster RG405m, or the most functional Retroid Pocket 3+ are the standouts. Mix any one from either category, and you'll be having a great experience regardless. Be it the most budget option or the most expensive one. If you go with the RP3+ it almost acts like a second phone, which gives you the bonus option of using an iPhone, to cover both App ecosystems. And if you go with the GPD Win-Max-2, you can potentially forgo buying a Laptop as it makes for some sort of substitute, potentially being a (all-in-one device) useful benefit. Things worth mentioning in videos or summaries like these.
@@ekintekomeanwhile I have steamdeck for backpack/indoors for harder emulation. 405m as a secondary or backup device. And my miyoo is my cheap edc that I'm willing to fix myself overtime when things break, and can replace the device itself for cheap if necessary.
Between the my Steam Deck and my Miyoo Mini+ I got emulation pretty much taken care of. It's insane how much the market has changed just in the last 5 years.
Same here, but for some reason I’m itching for the pocket metal frame one EDIT: fingers crossed boys. Birthday is coming up and gf said my gift won’t be getting here on time. The retroid was on my wishlist, and it’s the only thing that wouldn’t get here on time. That and armored core. I’d be happy with either one.
Yeah, impresive... but this has been posible since first android game devices around what, 10 years? I could explain why this is just a good move by Valve and suddenly it doesn't matter low settings and 30 fps. Same people that say at the same time that Switch sucks, even when they try to emulate it ^^ Crazy world
Handheld gaming is making a comeback and I am so glad. It is no longer jus Nintendo now. Valve and others have entered the fray and it makes me happy. When I was younger I wish I had something like this to be honest, and now that I'm older I really appreciate handhelds now and then. The Steamdeck is mostly what I need for emulation and pc lvl games, but I just got the abernic 35xx for gameboy and gameboy advance as well! Thank you for your recommendations. The steamdeck filled a niche I didn't know I needed. 😅
kid me would be absolutely salivating over the steam deck.....i was the kid carrying my gameboy color, 20+ games, and extra batteries with me in my pokemon tin box everywhereeee we went...
Over a month ago I started looking into getting a decent handheld system and I must say your videos have helped a bunch. Ended up ordering a metal retroid 3+ earlier today.
You're gonna love it! I just found out that the speaker grills are extremely sharp near where your pinky's would be, so I hope that's not the case for yours.
I bought a RG35XX and i LOVE IT, im gonna buy a Retroid Pocket 3 + next and then maybe an Odin, then after that the steam deck or the Rog ally. I have a pimped out switch and i play the RG35XX more than i do the switch. It doesn't make me smile like my modded wii did.
I bought a PSP 1 year ago and since then my Switch collects dust. It's a great device for NES, SNES, Gameboy, GBA, Genesys, PSP (ofcourse) and PS1. I just love it!
One thing I love about the PSP that hasn't been done quite the same on any hand held I'm aware of since, is the face buttons and d-pad size. They are the same size as console controller buttons. You don't see that on handhelds anymore.
I bought a Retroid Pocket 3+ a couple days ago from Amazon. Even though the reseller tacked almost $20 onto the price Retroid charges I still paid less than I would’ve straight from them due to free shipping. I got the RP3+ 2 days after I ordered it, and if there are any problems with it I’ll be dealing with Amazon and not Retroid over in China.
As always I really like that you emphislze which kind of usecase fits to which device. I also totally agree that between RP3+ and Steam Deck in the region between 200 and 300 (and in my opinion even 400) bucks there is nothing that justifies paying more than Rp3+ or RG405M. This will change when 100% GC, Wii, PS2 Emulation will come to devices between 150 and 250 bucks.
i got hooked from your channel and back into emulation through your fire stick tutorial. it's been so rad seeing all these handhelds come out, as well as your super in-depth reviews and guides that are just in a league of their own!!
While I think I would really enjoy the Powkiddy X55, I’m currently rocking a Miyoo Mini Plus. As a child of the late 70s and the 80s, the ability to have an Atari, Game Boy, NES, and SNES in my purse is fantastic. I gave my original Miyoo Mini to our 18 year old son, who is enjoying NES games, and he bought the Plus for my husband for Father’s Day.
I want more clamshell designs. I've recently been bringing my 3DS with me out and about, and it's awesome how easy it is to throw it in a pocket. Don't need a case or worry about scratching the screen or damaging sticks.
I totally agree! The clamshell is one of my personal favorites, too. I always worry about handhelds with exposed screen and sticks/buttons will get possibly damaged during transit somewhere. That is one reason I think the DS/3DS line just had great designs and I never worried about things getting damaged (well, unless you dropped it). Though, I would just want to make sure the hinges were sturdy so there would be little risk of snapping.
Yep. Right now the only option is the Pocket Flip. There is the GPD Win Mini coming, but I doubt we'll see that in people's hands before this holiday season. I owned the Win 2, and it was pretty nice. Still not happy they went with those tiny sticks instead of some good sliders, but you can't have everything I guess. If you could I'd want sliders like the pocket flip and instead of a d pad it would have a click stick like on the old neo geo products.
I wouldn't mind more clamshell portables, but I hope companies don't waste the opportunity to put in a second screen, one on the bottom. DS and 3DS systems aren't going to be around forever.
I was able to nab an RG505 a couple weeks ago for 135 bucks. Even if it's sort of the red-headed stepchild of the T618 set of devices, I'm very pleased and surprised with its performance. The oled screen pops in spite of the lower resolution, and the in-line shoulders aren't nearly as uncomfortable as I feared they might be. The RP3+ is probably still the easier recommend on account of the overall ergonomics, screen resolution, and HDMI out, but there's really no terrible choice with that chip in that price range.
I love my RG505. I'd bought the RP3 (non-plus), and while I also really liked it, I just preferred the chunkiness of the 505, and the OLED screen made the games look fantastic. The GammaOS update was phenomenal for offering basically free power (stock OS had Dragon Force II only hitting 60 FPS using frameskip, Gamma OS had no frame skip at normal power profile at 60 FPS flawlessly), along with fixing the screen sharpness, and I absolutely do not regret my purchase at all. By all means, the RP3+ is a great purchase, but I think the 505 is, at this stage, a little underrated.
Lots of focus on those in line shoulder buttons in comparisons, but not enough focus on those start/select and volume button locations on the RP3. Both devices have their flaws and it's going to come down to personal preference between which flaw you can endure the most.
This channel is the real deal, was really looking forward to this video! I bought both RP3+ and Ayn Odin lite, and if you are into PS2/Gamecube, do not hesitate to pay just a bit more (in my case, just an additional 40€) to get the Odin lite. Larger screen, runs more games and more smoothly, overall I am extremely satisfied with it!
Yo Retro Game Corps, I just want to say you made such a good transition from never being on-screen to doing your thing in front of the camera. Good job man, cool to see the channel grow.
This is the exact video I was looking for. Straight forward recommendations at various price points, calling out pros and cons and comparing competitors from an unbiased perspective. Thank you sir. Great quality content, subscribed.
Hey Russ, for PS3 testing I think you could try 4x splitscreen Modern Warfare. Even the original hardware struggled with that so it's a good stress test.
I am a happy owner of the miyoo mini, the trimui model S, the retroid pocket 3+, the ayn odin lite and the Steam Deck (and Vita, 3ds and Switch), so I know I have more than enough devices, but I still love watching your videos, they are so cool and I really like to see whats going on in the community. Also it makes me appreciate the handhelds I already own. Thanks for the lots of good content!
could you rank which devices you use the most and a couple details ab where you play it (when ur out or when ur at home)? also which one is the most convenient?
I am so glad I discovered your channel. I recently watched almost all of your videos when deciding which new handheld to get. I chose the Odin Lite based on your awesome reviews and break downs. Keep up the awesome content!
I've been loving my Retroid Pocket Flip. People have endlessly said that the hinge is horribly designed but I've had no problems in 2 or 3 months, loving every moment of it.
Likewise. I even have a steam deck that I take around pretty often but I just felt it was a bit too OP and way too huge to play PSP or lower games without feeling a tiny bit silly. The pocket flip is PERFECT for those systems. Loving being able to quickly take out the pocket flip in a parking lot, close it and pocket it when I'm forced to socialize. Midnight Club LA remix is fantastic 😎
Because the way the hinge is designed is stupid when they could've had it done with interior hinges for actual protection. But when it comes to Chinese products and quality control, it's a gamble. You just happened to get lucky.
@@umamifan looks cheap too...like a toy (buttons and d-pad are way too small for it...plus sliders?? nope. I'll stick with my RG35XX and Pi4 B gaming console with Batocera for anything above PS1...)
Thank you for being honest about the difficulty about ordering direct from a Chinese company. I honestly gave up on these retro handhelds after two 35xx died on me in less than a month and it was a headache dealing with the company and even needed to pay for a 2nd unit to get shipped to me. I decided just to mod a 3DS and Vita and even over a decade old, way more reliable than my Anbernic. I did use your link to get a Miyoo Mini + for prime day because if this dies at least I can use Amazons return policy
Yep. The only time I'll buy any of them is if and only if it's coming from a retailer with an actual return policy that will side with the buyer in most cases. They can't pull their BS on those platforms if you know how the TOS works. So for Amazon and eBay, they have to play nice. Anywhere else, they'll be very anti-consumer.
@@umamifan Good to know incase I decide to take the plunge on anything else. Was trying to be supportive of channel and use affiliate links. Can’t say I love the Mini + as much as the 35XX but at least it can take a charge without dying and has wifi for retro achievements. I’m a bit baffled how people can play with the original Mini. I’ve got small hands and I don’t find the Mini + the most comfortable, I couldn’t imagine my thumbs touching while hitting right on the D Pad and the Y button for most games
Yeah I think the only handhelds really worth getting are Odin lite and steam deck. The one thing I wish worked better on Odin lite is the HDMI connectivity to turn it into more of a hybrid console. But that's not necessarily an important feature as a handheld
@@liamconverse8950 I mean, for the size to performance ratio, some of the smaller "micro" handhelds just exist in a category all in their own right. Like sure, a Steam Deck is a beast. But it can't be pocketed unless the person is wearing some XXXL work pants or something.
@@umamifan Well personally I'm not trying to sneak it around in my pocket and game stealthily I'd rather just not have a tiny screen especially if Iwant to play any console from PS1 and above, but I don't have steam deck I have an Odin Lite
My favorite handheld of the year is Datafrog SF2000. I have bought 2 of them for my kids at $15. Your kids can have an ad free, non-predatory gaming. Best $30 i have spent. My home is silent and i can take a nap.
Nice Russ! I love the steam deck, but on my budget my favorite device this year is the SF2000, at right around $20 it’s the best value purchase out there for retro gaming. I’ve already taken apart a super Famicom controller so I can upgrade the control pad and Face button membranes.
As far as the mid-tier option, I actually think that the RG353PS is a better choice than the VS, if you are going to be playing a system where the sticks might actually be relevant then the extra comfort of the horizontal device just makes it a better form factor. Think you are spot on with the other winning pairs though and thumbs up for yet another helpful and informative video on what can be a somewhat confusing market with the speed of releases from so many of these companies.
@@ColinRowlands I know it has ArkOS but I prefer the themes and layout of Onion/Garlic OS though. Otherwise, would've been perfect for me. I'm happy to hear it has HDMI out though.
Have you considered branching out and doing videos about other topics? I ask because you're honestly the best review channel I've seen on TH-cam for any product. You spend just enough time, go into just enough detail, and are entertaining enough in your videos to keep me engaged!
In short, get a Vita for PS1, PSP and Vita, get a DS Lite/DSi/DSi Lite or even a 2DS XL for the Nintendo and Game Gear library and get the retro emulator that fills in the gap the best way, either by being ultra portable (RG280V and Miyoo Mini V2), being good value (RG35XX, used 351P) running Android (Retroid Pocket 3 Plus or 2S) or being a good all-rounder and easy to connect to a TV, like a full console (RG353PS). Using original hardware can be surprisingly cost-effective. I occasionally comment on your videos and I recently had a mad buying spree of various handhelds, mainly PS Vitas, Anbernics a Retroid P3+ and so on. After about a dozen devices and at least eight retro emulators, I finally discovered original Nintendo hardware. This completely changed my mind on the matter and although, I still think that emulators can be and often are great, there is a shocking economic/financial reality to retro game emulation. I think I will hack one of my Vitas for PS1, PSP and Vita. I cannot afford an emulator that can emulate Vita and the best PSP emulator I have is the Retroid Pocket 3 Plus, which is still more expensive than a Vita, reducing gaming experience to the level of an old Android phone. It is even worse with Nintendo games. Used DS Lite, DSi/DSi XL or even the few years old 2DS XL cost less than anything capable of enjoyably emulating them. You can pick up a 2DS for around £50-60 or any other 3DS/2DS variant for around £100. Nothing in that price range could emulate these. You don’t get upscaling and a lot of additional features, but there is a lot of joy in playing on original hardware and they largely maintain their value at this point. Of course, the whitewashed lie about these emulators is that you use them with ROMs you already legally own, but that is not really the case with most buyers and many of these come with thousands of games that no one owns. I cannot wait to mod an old DSi and play some NES Super Mario on it, while still being able to play the DS New Super Mario against my son on his next Christmas present, which will be a DSi, rather than an emulator.
Something I want to know regarding these handhelds is... which makes for the best Switch experience? When it comes down to all the accessories you need, what best accessories to go with and when it comes to bringing PC Gaming to your living room television.... which is the better Console to Handheld Experience? Steam Deck or The ROG Ally? I use a laptop currently. I have to open it, hit the power button.. close it... I'd like to have my Steam Games and maybe other PC games on my TV through one of these devices.... what's the best configuration for coach gaming using a handheld console?
This is a crazy good guide to purchasing a handheld for those making that choice. Super impressive man. I personally got a Steam Deck, found your channel, and have enjoyed your videos since!
Interesting. I am going to get the rg353m for portability even though I can get more power for less money if I buy the Retroid3+. My reasoning for getting the rg353m over the retroid3+ is because I need the best device that can fit in my tiny work uniform pockets. I'm glad that someone agrees with me! Once you have a steam deck, if you don't plan on bringing the retroid around, then you might as well sell it
@@BrentonBold This. It's not about the specs on a sheet or theoretical aspects. It's about the overall experience in a real-world scenario. For MOST people the largest device they can fit into their pocket is the RP3+ which makes it the most common recommendation. If you have smaller pockets, the RG405m and RG353m become the next options. And if your pockets are even smaller (women's apparel), then there's really nothing good/great (RGnano, PowKiddy V40, Anbernic RG280v) to recommend but to use a purse. With a purse, in which case you can now bring larger devices. For men, it's usually toting a satchel or backpack. In those circumstances, it's almost always better to stow away the Valve SteamDeck or ASUS ROG Ally. But again, there are small nitpicks that people need to consider for their own personal use-case. Some niche device maybe a better option for them.
Still have my AYN Odin Pro and it's still amazing. It's my night time console actually, there's something nostalgic about it when playing all retro. AYN is a daytime anything goes
I've never bought one but always wanted one. It's crazy how old that emulator is yet is still the most powerful android emulator out there. However, I don't think I'll ever get it because I'm looking more towards pocketable consoles. I hope that we get a retroid4 or a odin mini
Great video. Love my atomic purple RP3+. As someone with larger hands the hdmi out is fantastic and the device feels like a great controller in my hands.
You are the reason why I am the proud owner of the ayn Odin lite, I love it. Thank you so much for all your content, it makes it so much easier to decide with your indepth reviews and great knowledge about this. You are amazing 👍
I'm already looking forward to your Best Handhelds of 2024! It'll be interesting to see where the landscape is a year from now, although I can predict that the Steam Deck will stay relevant for a very very long time.
After had a modded ps2 for console gaming ( my favorite videogame off all time) i bought the rg35xx and i just love it, it's play all that i want in retro gaming, has a nice control and is very portable. I still playing a lot in my modded ps2 and the rg35xx is my handheld to carry with me to every place that i go, playing tetris on the bus is really fun and make my work life less stresefull and more easy.
Now that they can be found for under $50 each, I think the RG300X and TrimUi Smart (with Tomato CFW) are both compelling choices. IMO their main downfall was their price points at launch.
My favorite is still the Retroid Pocket 2 plus. Amazing bang for the buck. The fact that a handful of my favorite PS2 and GameCube games can be played on something under $100 is insane to me and I'm really excited for the upcoming update. As cool as the RP3+ is, I still like the 2+ more for the portability of it-- I just really wanted real analog sticks with R3 and L3 capability. Unless another system comes out with perfect PS2 and GameCube gameplay for a majority of their libraries, I think I'll stick with this little guy and save up for a Steam Deck.
I just recently cancelled my reservation for the Loki max. I ordered about a half year ago, and I was so far back in the queue. I wouldn't be able to see if for months. On top of that, the Ayaneo Geek 1S was just announced with -a better chipset -double the ram -better battery -better screen -hall sensor joysticks (Supply issue for the Loki currently) All for about $25 more (Shipping on the Loki was $50, whereas the geek is free shipping). If you have the Loki discount, that amount is a little different, but for the extras, that's a big difference. Oh yeah, and it ships out at the end of July.
I'm completely in love with the gpd win 4. It's very versatile and the fact that it has a physical keyboard and it fits in my jacket pocket, helps a lot when I'm out and need a real computer for just a little while for work reasons. And it plays everything I've thrown at him so far. I'm just considering selling it to get the new one with oculink or maybe the upcoming GPD mini.
@@lucykaede5863 If you have a dock to attach a keyboard, mouse and monitor than it works absolutely fine for long working sessions. The embedded keyboard is usable only for small writing needs. It works great for PC and emulator gaming. I'd not recommend for casual browsing and video streaming, because for these scenarios, the average smartphone is much better. They have better battery, most likely will have a better screen technology and can easily adapt for orientation changes.
Your channel and accompanying website have been one of my most valuable resources for myself as well as several of my friends/family. Thanks for all you do!
Favourite handheld is the deck... That thing is a monster and the love and support valve bestows upon it is amazing. As you say these handhelds are an investment and the deck is the only one that I know will be actively supported 5 years down the line. And that is worth gold! Also the price. On the summer sale with the discounts... Even in the best case scenario for the Ally (US states with no sales taxes) it made no sense to choose it over the deck.
Man, you are one of the best in the game. Well spoken, succinct, professional, and approachable. Picked up a Retroid 3+ at your recommendation and really love it. Cheers Russ!
My favorite is the steam deck. I just love the control layout of the deck. It is perfect for me. I love where the sticks, buttons and D-pad is placed. Perfection for my old hands. I must confess that it is the only handheld I have currently though. I am not smart enough to do emulation though, but I find it truly amazing in theory. I wish I could figure it out. lol. Nonetheless I love the SD for all the steam content. It is also very comfortable to hold and game for a good amount of time.
I actually went with the Rog Ally because of your videos and breakdowns. It’s been my go too emulation machine and I’ve been using it for classic DooM wads which feel perfect on a device like this.
It's crazy how handheld gaming PCs are now abundant. For years I wanted one and it just didn't exist except for makeshift devices uses windows tablets and possibly an attachable controller. But they were not great for gaming or ergonomically. You only real choice was android which was ok but lacking. And then I was there on the original GPD Win 1 crowdfunding and even though I loved it, you have to enjoy it for what it was rather than expect a lot from it. And it was the only option but its existence and ability to run some PC games decently was its main selling point (it did get me into a lot of older titles). But the dream of playing modern games and having a functional PC that was handheld wasn't really there yet. You basically had these handhelds for a novelty or for trips, but they couldn't be your main gaming rig, you'd need to supplement it with a full gaming PC or console. But now, not too many years later and we're spoiled for choice. It's hard to decide *WHICH* handheld gaming PC to get and with streaming you have even more options to play modern games at really high settings. I actually only use my GPD Win Max 2 for PC gaming, I don't have another rig bc it is everything I need and easy to use anywhere. What a time to be alive.
505 with GammaOS is worth looking for the 150 $ price point OLED, massive battery time and awesome buttons. Very similar to the 4:3, just with an bigger screen, and more suited towards dpad usage, and all that with the awesome Vita display Sadly, that you didn't test this.
GPD Win 4 is my favourite thing I have purchased this year. Can play most games and runs really well. The keyboard and small mouse pad are the best feature added on a PC handheld, I don't think I can switch to another brand anymore.
I feel the same way right now i am happy with my Gpd Win 4 too I stop using my Steam deck 🤮 I can’t stand the Steam deck it looks weird looks like a skateboard 🛹 all it needs a four wheels on it
@@TheChinamen1 yea the track pad it’s like horrible too it’s useless for me I like gpd win 4 track pad it doesn’t move around like crazy like Steam deck
I own a Retroid Pocket 3+, a steam deck, and a Rog Ally the 700 dollar version. The Steam deck feels so premium compared to the Rog the sticks and buttons feel fantastic and touch pads! The rog has Turbo mode when plugged in or docked = WAY more performance than the deck. Retroid Pocket 3+ went threw the washing machine and still works....ty for the video!
I bought an Odin Base from RGC recommendations and overall I'd say I'm very happy.. The performance is as good as I could hope for and the touch mapping is great. My only gripe is with the company itself. It's so focused on selling you new hardware they haven't even made yet it feels their current crop has essentially no support and never will. Also while it feels nice in hand it has a subpar touchscreen and a majority of the tech support discord, including my own, is faulty to fully defective touch.
Thinking about going for the clamshell one. Never had a 3ds but enjoy the form factor, especially that the screen is protected when you put it in your pocket.
@@Mr300vapes I bought it on the 11th, notification that it shipped on the 12th and it's arriving on the 17th. But I did choose to ship through DHL and paid loads of money for shipping
Thank you so much for all your videos. I just started getting Tik Tok videos for a lot of these and I didn’t realize the world of handheld gaming I was diving into. You made my decision for which one I like easy and went over every aspect I needed in a short video. Thank you!
Neat. These things have really evolved from when i was last interested in handheld retro emulation back in the PSP days (which was insanely awesome) i am quite interested in getting one of these handhelds. I like the slick compact form factor of some and im really in love with how theyve adopted the gameboy look. It is quite stunning and the price is so damn low these days.
I feel like I have a well rounded collection: RG35XX, RP3+, and GPD Win 4, and I am really happy with all of them. I may not really need the RP3+ since I have the Win 4 now, but it is really awesome to have anyway. Still hoping for a GPD Win 4 guide, as I still haven't set up retro arch and mainly been using it for Steam, and oddly enough for working at cafes, because its so powerful.
Dude im sure i dont need to say this .. but you are the GOAT .. they way you help out thos genre...and help me feel at ease with your recommendations . You literally are the god of handhelds IMO and i wish you nothing but success.. and i watch every new video you drop at this ooint even if i dont plan on getting the device ..
Had my RP3+ for 6 months now and love it, the grip was a great addition for longer gaming sessions. Like you, I'm also hopeful for an x86-based handheld in the sub-$250 category. It would be great to be able to play PS3 titles on something with a similar form factor to the Retroid/Anbernic handhelds.
@@Rizz407It doesn’t have a fast charging feature. I’d say charging speed is average for a phone-type device. I’ve not noticed it get hot, but it can get warm during use depending on the performance mode or if running CPU-intensive games.
I was looking for a handheld but then I just hooked up an old PC to my TV and I play like that now. I have steam and retro games on it and can steam link to my main PC if I need to. I know it isn't quite the purpose of this vid but a good alternative for some.
I bought a Steam Deck and have absolutely loved it for playing modern games. I later picked up an RG35XX to complement the massive Steam Deck so I have something pocket friendly to enjoy retro games. Also, my New 3DS XL is hacked so I can play DS, DSi, and 3DS games with the native experience.
Thank you, I think im gonna get a retroid pocket 3+... I have a SteamDeck, but I think for a small pocket size portable. This offers a great price to performance
Retroid3+ is great no doubt price and performance. However, the size is what I call a hybrid size (big but just small enough to maybe be pocketable). A person in this comment section is going to sell his Retroid3 because he takes a smaller, less powerful emulator around and plays his steam deck at home. Sense you already have a steam deck, be sure if Retroid3 size is appropriate for your lifestyle. If not, you might want a less powerful smaller device instead like the ones mentioned in this video or my personal favorite the rg353m.
@BrentonBold yeah, honestly I use my phone mostly on the go. Mobile games obviously work great. But a pocketable handheld for at work seems more beneficial. I'll look into the rg353m... I feel like 8 and 16bit games are mostly what I'd want because you can usually pickup and play in quick bursts
I had left a comment on your previous video asking which device is best for a newbie, because everything seems overwhelming. This follow up video is perfect and very helpful! Thank you! 🤝🙌
For me you can't beat the Odin for the bang for your buck. I have a Lite and find myself reaching for it to play games on. I have an RP2+ as well and I do still play it sometimes, but the Odin just out classes it.
Oh hell yeah the 2023 version of this, your 2022 video was the first video I watched from you and it helped me very much while choosing a handheld for myself, love this channel! (Ended up with the odin lite)
Really hoping Valve makes a smaller form factor Steam Deck one day. Adore mine but that thing is a beast size wise! Kind of curious about the Loki in the meantime.
Your videos made me order Anbernic 355xx. Thank you for a great work, your videos have all that one needs to know about that devices. Now, when I`m get my console, I`ll consult to your guides how to set it up properly!
My first retro handheld was the RG35XX with Garlic OS installed. I was using that for a while. Then I bought the 405m at launch and that quickly collected dust. But now Gamma OS for the 405m is such a game changer. I'm actually considering selling my 35XX now because of how much better the experience is for me 😅
How is it like playing PS1 games on the 405M compared to the RG35XX? In which system does the gb,gbc, and gba games look better for you? I haven't bought a retro device yet so I want to make sure my first one will have no regrets.
I had the exact thing happen. Except now my 405m is being used for N64/PSP and sometimes DS if I feel like it. And gave my mom the 35xx and bought a MM+ for Gameboy and such. I mainly wanted the wifi option for easier updating and potential multiplayer.
My 405M died after just one week. Immediately after switching it on, the battery got hot and went out forever. The joysticks are also of poor quality, installed crookedly and with far too little resistance when pressed.
Finally, been waiting for someone to review all these popular handhelds. Not that I will buy already, but because I just want to be updated with today's gaming technology.
Can't wait for next year. I think we are about 2 years away from a small pocketable device that can perfectly run gamecube, ps2 and 3ds games at a an affordable price point. Been holding off.
My current favorites: Logitech G Cloud: Great battery life. The best for streaming. Amazing ergonomics. So so emulation. If you pay the full 350 for it you're totally getting scammed. RoG Ally: The most powerful handheld I have. Works great as a portable computer. Buggy as all hell. Has lots of potential. If you don't know Windows you're gonna have a bad time. Steamdeck: Can do it all. MOSTLY stable. If you're unfamiliar with Linux you'll have a bad time when things break (Sadly, this is me.) Miyoo Mini Plus: Snuck up as one of my favorites. With Onion/Garlic OS it becomes a great tiny portable that is great just to grab and go. Super colorful screen too. Retroid Pocket 3+ = Portable and works great as a streaming device/emulation machine. Don't get too attached because the company will totally make a new one like 1 month or 2 after you've bought it.
How is the Ally "Buggy as all hell"? I've had one since June 14th and haven't experienced any major bugs except for the speakers crackling in silent power profile. It's Windows 11 with like 4 pre installed programs it's not buggy at all... Lmao Also SD "Can do it all" except it doesn't support a large number of Windows games... Lol RP3+ I have one, had it for more then 2 months all Retroid has announced is the Pocket Flip, people are still salty over the RP3+ release like get over it.... and it works okay for streaming as the triggers aren't analog and is annoying for games that use it
@@TheTyisawesome Windows isn't buggy, but Armory Crate totally is. I suspect in time it'll get better but it crashes a LOT for me. I've also had issues of my Ally freezing during boot up, getting so hot that it automatically shuts down, and then magically restarting once it cools down. For EVERY firmware update this happens. There's also the issue of SD cards dying (thankfully hasn't happened to me). I love my ally but to say it doesn't have launch bugs is a disservice to those who wanna buy one. I mean, it's great, but you're going to buy a product that needs at least a good half year to a year to run smoothly. Just like the Steam Deck did. Also you can install Windows on a steam deck, but you probably won't want to.
Love your content. Currently have a retroid pocket 3+ and love it. Would love to see a video on what you think of currently announced future handhelds and how this list could shift?
Personally, I have no idea what future consoles are coming out and I've tried looking! I think that's important information to know before someone makes a purchase on any of these consoles.
Miyoo Mini Plus is the neatest thing I've bought at the price point in 2023. It still blows my mind to play PS1 games on a handheld device and to be able to upload new games and update the firmware over wi-fi. It's like a budget Steam Deck!
Great video, thanks for making this. It's really helpful to have a succinct round-up of so many of these devices and clear well-reasoned recommendations. I'm really tempted to get a ROG Ally, myself, although I kind of know I'd end up playing Links Awakening again, but this time on a £700 device. 😂
Really appreciate this. I’ve been looking at getting a retro handheld for years and am always stuck in analysis paralysis because there are so many options at so many price points with so many pros and cons. I ended up using an old Galaxy S9 with an 8bitdo Pro 2 and phone clip. Not the most elegant or pocketable solution. But ergonomic and surprisingly powerful. That said, I’m looking more and more at a Steam Deck. I just worry about making that investment with so much always coming down the pipeline.
I've been curious about this for a while since I wanted to get back into my old PS2 and PS3 library. The ROG, Odin, Loki seems like a better investment than a PS5 in that sense, because it will pay modern games from steam. Can you "dock" these via hdmi and play with a controller across the room? How easy is it to get into emulation? I haven't done it since the late 2000s, only emulating 32bit on the PC. I don't mind buying games at all, but it would be nice to have the option to run ray traced 60fps Tears of the Kingdom rather than on my Switch.
I have the RG505 and 351MP and love both of them so much. 505 for psp, ps2 and N64 and the 351MP for 32 bit and below. Especially shmups! That console is like my go to shmup system :)
I know a full discussion of the limitations of 6th gen emulation on underpowered Android devices is beyond the scope of a roundup video like this, but as an Odin owner, I wince everytime I hear you talk about playing "some" GCN and PS2 on a T618 device or Odin. It's not technically untrue, but it is a severely compromised experience. Almost every title experiences some level of performance dips and/or graphical glitches, several important titles are just plain unplayable, and spending hours testing different Dolphin MMJR builds and AetherSX2 cycle skip / underclock settings to get acceptable performance is not my idea of fun in any case. For those who are interested in spending more time actually playing games than tinkering, the Steam Deck is really where it's at for 6th gen emulation. That's what I ultimately wound up doing, and I wish I'd taken misleading claims about the Odin's 6th gen performance with more of a grain of salt and just done that to begin with. Not that the Odin isn't amazing, but it's amazing for PSP and below, not for GCN and PS2.
You’re the man, dude. I love watching all your vids, even if it’s about a device or topic I wouldn’t normally have interest in. Appreciate you! Future video idea - I’d love to see a top 5,10,20 whatever video about your favorite retro games of all time. Your favorite modern games would be cool too!
i've been interested on the AYN loki base 256gb seems like a good middle ground at 579. the rog ally cheaper version is a lot underpowered in comparison.
I am always so impressed by your videos, no nonsense but far from boring. Thank You!
Thanks for the generous support, Mark!
Indoors/backpack/x86:
Cheapest SteamDeck, or Fastest ROG Ally, or most expensive GPD Win-Max-2 are the standouts.
Outdoors/pocket/ARM:
Smallest RG353m, or faster RG405m, or the most functional Retroid Pocket 3+ are the standouts.

@@ekinteko i have the 3+ with grip and the V90 as my two. Two great bang for the buck options and both quite portable

Same here, but for some reason I’m itching for the pocket metal frame one
EDIT: fingers crossed boys. Birthday is coming up and gf said my gift won’t be getting here on time. The retroid was on my wishlist, and it’s the only thing that wouldn’t get here on time. That and armored core. I’d be happy with either one.
@kyrinky Same, that is why I still use the RG351M. Miyoo Mini+ is awesome for NES and below but my big hands cramp after a few minutes.

Was tempted to go with the 35xx plus
Over a month ago I started looking into getting a decent handheld system and I must say your videos have helped a bunch.
Ended up ordering a metal retroid 3+ earlier today.
You're gonna love it! I just found out that the speaker grills are extremely sharp near where your pinky's would be, so I hope that's not the case for yours.

RP3+ is gorgeous, the definitive "retro" handheld outside of the Odin!
I bought a RG35XX and i LOVE IT, im gonna buy a Retroid Pocket 3 + next
and then maybe an Odin, then after that the steam deck or the Rog ally.
I have a pimped out switch and i play the RG35XX more than i do the switch. It doesn't make me smile like my modded wii did.
@SirBrucie I really liked my Odin Pro until I got a Steam Deck.
So hard to keep up with the flurry of handhelds releasing all the time. Makes your videos all the more valuable Russ!

I gotta say the Odin Lite is playing 100% of the PS2 games I throw at it with 2-3x native res pretty seamlessly. If it didn’t do that I’d agree fully

While I think I would really enjoy the Powkiddy X55, I’m currently rocking a Miyoo Mini Plus. As a child of the late 70s and the 80s, the ability to have an Atari, Game Boy, NES, and SNES in my purse is fantastic.
It's still worth having a case, wouldn't want to scratch the clamshell
@@plaistowjames6792 A very good point. A case is absolutely necessary for _any_ handheld device.
The RG505 would have been awesome with HDMI out, its only glaring downside.
“red-headed stepchild” hahaha 😂 that’s a new one!

Russ is my go-to for retro emulation handheld advice. His videos are the best.
Powkiddy X55 for me. Love it, its cheap has a big screen, great performance and a long battery life.
Odin Lite is great handheld, absolutely gorgeous size and build quality.

Nice Russ! I love the steam deck, but on my budget my favorite device this year is the SF2000, at right around $20 it’s the best value purchase out there for retro gaming. I’ve already taken apart a super Famicom controller so I can upgrade the control pad and Face button membranes.
Would love to see this video every 6 months. Love your videos!
The problem is that Anbernic pissed a lot of the custom firmware people off and they aren't going to officially support the PS.

I love how hard competition has pushed the emulation-based handheld market. Makes me (almostl with the Deck hadn't taken me out of the game.

Steam Deck and Miyoo Mini + are my go to devices right now. Even to the point I’m debating selling my RP3+

Came from one of your older videos and it's amazing to see how much your production values have improved. Keep up the great work!
Does it take SD card and how big of a size for the Pocket 2 plus? How much ram does it come with? It's cheaper than the 3 plus.
I just recently cancelled my reservation for the Loki max. I ordered about a half year ago, and I was so far back in the queue. I wouldn't be able to see if for months.
On top of that, the Ayaneo Geek 1S was just announced with
-a better chipset
-double the ram
-better battery
-better screen
-hall sensor joysticks (Supply issue for the Loki currently)
All for about $25 more (Shipping on the Loki was $50, whereas the geek is free shipping).
How is it like for work or casual/streaming use?
"to chose"
😂
Seriously check out Russ's videos on how to install emu deck. Emu deck makes emulation super easy .
@@Beyondesp Yeah I've tried. I just don't have the brain for it. I wish. Thanks anyway.
I can literally FEEL a retroid pocket 4 announcement coming.... I feel it.
Please...
I actually went with the Rog Ally because of your videos and breakdowns. It’s been my go too emulation machine and I’ve been using it for classic DooM wads which feel perfect on a device like this.
*buys a 750$ system...
to play Doom on it...
How could you get retro games on tge Ally?
505 with GammaOS is worth looking for the 150 $ price point
OLED, massive battery time and awesome buttons.
Very similar to the 4:3, just with an bigger screen, and more suited towards dpad usage, and all that with the awesome Vita display
Sadly, that you didn't test this.
GPD Win 4 is my favourite thing I have purchased this year. Can play most games and runs really well. The keyboard and small mouse pad are the best feature added on a PC handheld, I don't think I can switch to another brand anymore.
I feel the same way right now i am happy with my Gpd Win 4 too I stop using my Steam deck 🤮 I can’t stand the Steam deck it looks weird looks like a skateboard 🛹 all it needs a four wheels on it
@@xervantezxvi5022 yea I sold my steam for the GPD Win 4. I hated the track pad, button layout and how big it is. Legit like an iron board.
How do I join the discord? I recently got a odin pro on eBay used and would like to make some upgrades if needed
Thinking about going for the clamshell one. Never had a 3ds but enjoy the form factor, especially that the screen is protected when you put it in your pocket.
I bought an Odin lite 6gb and it's arriving in 3 days, I'm so excited! 😁
That's great!🎉
🤘🏻😃🤘🏻
How long did it take from the time you orderd
@@Mr300vapes I bought it on the 11th, notification that it shipped on the 12th and it's arriving on the 17th. But I did choose to ship through DHL and paid loads of money for shipping
best video ever on mobile emulation systems jeez
Imagine a PSP/PS Vita X86 handheld with a $200-$300 price tag!😩🙌🏼🔥
Retroid pocket flip I love. really enjoying it, and daijisho just makes it really feel and look great.
"Out for a Chinese holiday" My new euphemism for situations in which there's poor communication regarding a delay.
It’s always those Chinese holidays
Love it
Wasn't that everywhere for all 2020-now for covid?
Fact: Chinese people don't have holidays😅

Thank you so much for all your videos. I just started getting Tik Tok videos for a lot of these and I didn’t realize the world of handheld gaming I was diving into. You made my decision for which one I like easy and went over every aspect I needed in a short video. Thank you!
Neat. These things have really evolved from when i was last interested in handheld retro emulation back in the PSP days (which was insanely awesome) i am quite interested in getting one of these handhelds. I like the slick compact form factor of some and im really in love with how theyve adopted the gameboy look. It is quite stunning and the price is so damn low these days.
Love my Odin Lite, such a complete device
A great video from start to finish! Very informative! Definitely one of the best channels out there on this subject. Well done!
I'm actually considering selling my 35XX now because of how much better the experience is for me 😅
The 405M is so much better now, i'm selling my girlfriend because I don't use her anymore.
@@4Fingr That's the first I've heard of your case. Able to get a free repair or swap on it?
Finally, been waiting for someone to review all these popular handhelds. Not that I will buy already, but because I just want to be updated with today's gaming technology.
Can't wait for next year. I think we are about 2 years away from a small pocketable device that can perfectly run gamecube, ps2 and 3ds games at a an affordable price point. Been holding off.
a modded vita can do that....i think
@@absabs129 no it can't
Just starting out on this Channel. This video sold me your channel. What an in depth comparison. I love it! Keep up the good work!
I still play with my *Miyoo Mini* 2.8" a lot.
I am hoping the *KT-R1* comes good on its promise.
My current favorites:
Logitech G Cloud: Great battery life.
If you're unfamiliar with Linux you'll have a bad time when things break (Sadly, this is me.)
Miyoo Mini Plus: Snuck up as one of my favorites.
Lmao
Also SD "Can do it all" except it doesn't support a large number of Windows games... Lol
RP3+ I have one, had it for more then 2 months all Retroid has announced is the Pocket Flip, people are still salty over the RP3+ release like get over it.... and it works okay for streaming as the triggers aren't analog and is annoying for games that use it
@@TheTyisawesome Windows isn't buggy, but Armory Crate totally is.
I get mine later on today. im stoked, lol. did yours come preloaded with games?
I’ve been mostly alternating between the RP3+ and the RG35XX. Honestly the prefect combo for me at this time.
I got the rg35xx and installed garlicos thanks to your review and i love it!
Mate, I love your house, your setup, your style and your t-shirts.
