There was nothing I didn't love about this video. The drums look amazing. The drums sound amazing. The playing was amazing. The explanation was amazing. Finally a video that wasn't a waste of time.
I remember when these were released, and I was an obsessed teenager. Many people mocked them, and they obviously didn't become what Peavey hoped, but to this day, the kit I'd still love to own in a home studio!
Great review! I bought my Peavey's after seeing Bobby Rock at a drum clinic in 1994. I've got the same kit as you and still love them. I've owned several kits since then but can't replicate the way these drums resonate. The "bridge system" they used to keep the lugs off the shells was simply a game changer. I've got a double bass kit with 2 racks and 2 floors. To this day, I use other kits live but still use my Peavey's in the studio. Love these drums 💯
I’m sitting here watching this video about some of the more unique drums ever to grace Modern Drummer magazine and thinking, “This guy’s doing a great job explaining them and clearly knows what he’s talking about.” Then you snapped off that buzz roll and I knew you were a lot more than just knowledgeable about drums. You would make David Garibaldi proud. Awesome. Really well done!
I had the wonderful pleasure of playing Steve Volpp's prototype kits, and Peavey's first offerings of them were true to those. They had Steve supervising the production. Wonderful invention! Great sounding drums!
No, Peavey and Steven Volpp, the designer of the drums, couldn't agree on things during production so they went to court about it. The ruling was, until they came up with an agreement, neither parties were allowed to make them. This came from Steven Volpp himself at Peaveypolooza 2015 at Memphis Drum Shop.
I love a well tuned set of drums and you have them sounding awesome. As a bassist that had access to studio drums, one of the first things I learned was how drums should be tuned to complimentary pitches or keys if you will. Always wanted some of these.
You found my comment about Rogers 'not nice'....but my commentary on the Peavey Radial Bridge drums are fully 'nice'. These drums sound fantastic!...especially under your sticks! The drums may look weird but they sound so frickin GOOD! Best sounding production drums Ive ever heard!
Had a set at my local store back when I was in high school I believe it was 1993. It was blue stain natural finish. The kit sounded awesome 🥁🔥cool video thanks for sharing and for bringing back some great memories
I remember the first time I saw these back in the early to mid 90’s. I was turned off by their appearance. But the guys in the store asked me to play them. I still remember the sound of that bass drum. They whole kit was amazing. I bought a set of Tama starclassic about a month before I discovered these strange looking drums The starclassics have served me well and still get a lot of action. But those Peavey drums are that one kit that got away. Congratulations on your kit, great sounding and great playing.
I played one of these kits on a fly-in TV show appearance, where backline was provided. I cringed when I saw them…but was delighted when I played them. They sounded incredible.
Technically, this is NOT a Radial Pro 1000 kit. It's a Peavey RBS-1 (Radial Bridge System) kit, which predates the RP-1000s. The most noticeable differences being the RBS-1's screw on black metal badges (as opposed to the RP-1000 stick on badges), and the bridges are made from laminated layers of wood veneers (as opposed to the RP-1000 bridges made with a "butcher block" construction). Both sound GREAT!
You need to reach out to Steven Slate or Toontrack and let them sample this kit! These drums deserve a place in history and VST samples would be a good way to preserve them. I heard these drums 20 years ago and I still would prefer this set over DW, Sonor etc.
I came for the old peavey kit - I used to have a poster in my drum studio back in the late 90's and this things sounds as cool as it looks, but really I stayed for the playing! I love your chops, dynamic, soulful and very expressive. Bravo!
Drums sound really nice. It takes a seasoned player like yourself to pull out the best sound from this kit. I can really appreciate the validity of the radials because of your ear. Thank you for that.
I have never seen, heard or played these personally, but I do remember when they first came out and the guy at one of our local music stores gave me a sales brochure of them. I had the same reaction like "what the hell are those? ". Lol they didn't have any in the store, but he told me he had got to play on some and how incredible they sounded, then he told me the price. Between the looks and the price, the sound no longer mattered. Lol if I had that much money and could have heard them for myself, I may have gotten over the spacey design, but that price point was definitely not in my budget back then. Plus I never saw them in any of the music shops, even the ones that carried Peavey, which kind of made me wonder if they were so great, why didn't any of them have a demo kit in their stores. I was curious to want to try them out or at least hear someone else who played them. They do sound nice. I'm sure they sound even better in person than on my phone. I love your style of playing, by the way. Very solid, yet relaxed. You make it look effortless while sounding like a monster drummer.
if Don said their good then they are good. don is a fantastic drummer , he and Mel work to together to produce pure rock and roll music. all 3 were the best of the best.
I remember wanting some of these when I was a teenager. Just to have something different, but I never got a chance to hear them or play them. This is great!
I used to do sound for a band back in the 90’s that the drummer use this drums and I’ve always thought they were great. But you’re right, the brand carries a stigma that it’s really not fair for how good the instrument is. Superb sound! PS I’m getting some Gad vibes here lol solid 🤟🏽
I got a kit around 15 years ago & kept them in storage for most of that time . Was thinking of selling them until I saw your video . Fantastic sounding drums & playing as usual . A a really well done video as well. Always enjoy your vids . Thank you .
I got a chance to demo a set of these in the 90's and they were truly incredible. The toms just sang like no other drums I've played. Everything you hear about them is true.
I played several of these kits when they came out, and still own a Radial Pro Snare Drum. These drums sounded truly great. Peavey was just distributing them and I believe licensing them, though I'm not sure about the licensing part. The guy that designed them had the last name Volpp? if I remember correctly. I met him at NAMM and used to have his business card. He was really serious about the concept of thin maple shells with no interference impeding the drum's natural resonance. From memory I played on 3 different kits and they all sounded fantastic. Sadly the concept didn't win more people over, I believe it was mostly because of the polarizing aesthetic, which I personally liked and thought looked cool, but many did not. They did sound fantastic though. My snare will rip your head off. My guitarist at the time used to comment on how powerful it was when we would rehearse. Great drum sounds.
I know I was in a band when these came out and I showed our drummer one of the brochures and he just made a face when he saw them and was like, "Nah". I think you are right, the look kind of turned people off which is sad because they do have a great sound.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful monster. I own radial pro 1000 kit too(black finish),the best drum I ever have, but too loud to my neighbors 😅,so now I still looking for a 18” bass drum…
Drums designed by Peavey (Sound people!) makes sense that they sound so "present"...definitely great for Pop and Rock music...I wouldn't play 'em for Jazz unless it's Fusion-like, Sweet chops you got there Rick, respect!!!

local guy here in Fl makes drums with the one turn tuning system “Spinelli Drums”. Similar sound to the Tama grandstars and star drums from the 80’s/90’s.
Fantastic video, Rick. These drums sound monstrous enough with Pinstripes. Imagine the boom with Clear Ambassadors top and bottom. I vividly remember playing them at PASIC '95 and being utterly blown out of my chair by how amazing they sounded. (After which, Bobby Rock came into the room, sat down, and destroyed them!) If I had the money right now, I would buy one of these kits without so much as a second's thought.
You had a student for a little while about 22 years ago who had (and still has) the same kit, but with the matching snare. Likes them so much that added a set in gloss black. Awesome drums. There's a forum on Facebook for collectors and players.
Thank you for this! I’ve always been intrigued by these drums. The Tom’s have a great spread and the resonance is stunning. There is a use one and a local music shop, it needs heads and love In a bad way, but even in that condition I was floored by how they sound. Guess I’ll go spend some money.
I remember sitting next to Hinger timpani when I had the occasional extra gig with the Des Moines Symphony when I was in music school. Never gonna forget that warm sound.
I don't think they look bad or are ugly. Just unique. Maybe a little better finish wouldn't hurt. But yeah, I can see them being pretty expensive. But they are made in the U.S. so that is good. I think adding a "Snare Weight" to the tom and snare (if you had the original snare) would really help tame the resonance while still giving you the complex tones from the drums. Awesome you have a set of such unique and great sounding drums. It's cool for one to not follow all the "sheeple". And proof of your dedication to the instrument.
These are the RBS-1 series Peaveys. The Radial Pro 1000's are slightly different. The Radial Bridge on the RBS-1 kits are the laminated style. Later they switched to segmented Radial bridges that were glued together with dowels. Reason they changed the way they made the bridge is because the laminated style, the bearing edge would come apart, destroying the bearing edge.. Still, they are quite amazing! I have two 1000 kits 😁
another explanation given was that the maple block construction was far less expensive than the layered maple boards, but I can easily understand the fragility of the layered bearing edges. I have one black RBS 10" 12" 14" 16" 22", matching snare, a cherry Radial Pro 1000 10" 12" 14" 18" and a cherry 751 12" 14" 22". on the RBS (end of production, just before switching to Radial pros) the shell is double epoxy coated inside/outside: first a thick bright yellow , then a thick black layer: the bearing edges on my shells are just like concrete.
I remember when i first browsed through my drum teacher's old MD magazines and saw these UFO-esque drums and thought "Peavey?? THAT Peavey??" These sound incredible, but your fantastic drumming certainly helps!
I remember these from the 90s. There was a kit at the local shop and we were all amazed at the sound. I've always wanted one of the kicks specifically for recording. I saw a kit of these in bop sizes and I thought it was the most ridiculous looking thing haha.
Those mounts were new on high end sets in the 90s. They worked their way down to less expensive sets in the early 2000s. They bend the batter hoops on the cheaper sets Nice hi hat work with the left leg! Would have been cool, and probably more expensive, if they made these modular, so you could switch out the shells; have metal, acrylic, and different types of wood that would be interchangeable with the rim/hoop parts
I remember seeing a purple peavey kit in the very first modern drummer issue I ever owned back in like... 1998 or something... I always wanted that kit because it had that weird look
DRUMS SOUND AWESOME!!! BUT DUDE, YOUR PLAYING IS INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!
Hello Yes. Rick's drumming is incredible, ANYTHING RICK CAN'T DO WITH A PAIR OF DRUMSTICKS AIN'T WORTH DOIN'' TAKE CARE!

I remember these from the 90s. There was a kit at the local shop and we were all amazed at the sound. I've always wanted one of the kicks specifically for recording. I saw a kit of these in bop sizes and I thought it was the most ridiculous looking thing haha.
I own a ridiculous 10" 12" 14" 18" cherry Pro 1000: it is the finest kit among the other 10 brands I have in these sizes. believe me.
The playing is great, and the drums sound fabulous. And man your right , they are thunderous.
Best, best and best drumkit, sounds amazing!!!
Man I love your playing and the kit is awesome!!!
Wow they look pretty cool and sound amazing! Very nice playing btw
I really loved your playing and the sound of your Drums, such for which!
Those mounts were new on high end sets in the 90s. They worked their way down to less expensive sets in the early 2000s. They bend the batter hoops on the cheaper sets
Nice hi hat work with the left leg!
