Darkjpower20 No one is so high into the feel in this heroic lowness.. my friend of miserry couldn't teach much it seems. Without the dog.. .. without leaving pride down, where the Fix'd Utterance Clarity Kingdom would the dishonest and arrogant roam Godly.. You're soooo right but this song is an honest low man's due.. normal to be underrated nowadays: Sad But True! Crain of sin..
Back in 1996, Metallica took a massive chance that would see them look and sound ultimately different. Songs such as this and Mama Said were so risky that even a lot of music industry insiders must've thought that Metallica was off of their collective rockers for having songs like these on Load. However, although Metallica cut their hair, & put on pimp suits, the lyrics in their songs still had an unbelievably sharp edge to them. As Led Zeppelin said:'The song remains the same"! I commend Metallica for taking such a risk. This is an excellent song!!!
I agree wholeheartedly. I particularly adore Reload, it was the first album of theirs I had in my hands at a young age and I have to say I haven't heard anything quite like it.
This song touches on multiple subjects including addiction, homelessness and forgiveness but primarily conveys a sense of regret. The protagonist desires forgiveness not only for what he has done but what he knows he will continue to do. My eyes seek reality (He tries to see the truth) My fingers seek my veins (He feels for his veins, so he can stick himself with a needle) There's a dog at your back step, He must come in from the rain (He tries to find shelter from the harsh conditions he finds himself in I fall 'cause I let go (He gives up) The net below has rot away (Nothing/no-one is there to catch him as he falls, all his chances are up) The trash fire is warm (The only comfort he has is that of a trash fire giving him heat and light) No one's safe from the storm (No-one is safe from the effects of drugs) And I can't bare to see, What I've let me be, So wicked and worn (He himself does not know who he has become and shows fatigue from the abuse of drugs) So as I write to you (He is writing the suicide note/letter) What is done and to do (What he has done in his life, and what he is going to do to end it) Maybe you'll understand (Understand all the pain he has been through) And won't cry for this man, 'cause low man is due (He is not worth your tears) Please forgive me (Self explanatory really, he wants forgiveness) Touch clean with a dirty hand (He is cleaning the needle) I touched the clean to the waste (Injects the “clean” needle into his “wasted” skin) So low the sky is all I see (He is in his grave looking up) So you bring this poor dog in from the rain, Though he just wants right back out again (You can give him shelter and put him in rehab, but he just wants to get back out there and look for his next fix) And I cry, to the alley way, Confess all to the rain (With no other shelter, he rests in an alleyway and confesses his sins in the form of the note/letter) But I lie, lie straight to the mirror (He even lies to himself that everything will be alright) One I've broken, to match my face (His abuse of drugs has taken its toll physically)
@@ericstorks7177 6 years good fro you. Looking back it makes you wonder how much time you lost, but you may have gained more by stopping. May God bless you each day .
2 years ago I met a group of homeless men. I was so sheltered I didn’t even realize there were people actually living on the streets in my town. They opened my eyes an my heart. Each one of them had a story. I came to love each and every one of them. No matter how much I loved them, how much I cared, how much I helped...everyone of them chose their addiction. I miss them every day. To the ones lost....Viking Mike and Patrick...Rest in peace. And those who have demons I don’t understand but would still open my door to...Wolf, Greg, Tweety, Tim, I pray everyday that you will see you are loved so much.
I'm sorry for your experience, though it sounds like it was good for you and them. Please remember though, a lot if homeless are not addicts at all. A lot if people are one medical emergency, job loss, etc away from seeing themselves in the same situation. It doesn't help to have people who assume the worst, because you happen to be homeless.
This song is about accepting one's true nature. It combats the popular religious belief that you can be forgiven by confessing your sins. You can apologize to others for who you are, but that's not the same as forgiving yourself. You'll always be tied to what you've done and at the end of the day if you feel like you're not a good person, then the only resolution is to attempt to change your nature. Yet, you're trapped forever in your own mind with the memories of what you've done in your life. If you have corrupted and harmed other human beings, then it's difficult to feel like you really deserve forgiveness. If you can't look at yourself and say that you've lived your life the right way or treated people well, then how will you ever feel like you're deserving of the good that life has to offer?
A powerfull verse that talks miles about the self-loathing and the general mindset that people on addictions (and in some cases depression or other mental health illnesses) tend to have. James is a master lyricist, he says so much in few words.
I'm going through a very difficult mental stage in my life and Metallica's ballads help me through this. I don't know if I'll go through this alive. Thank you, Metallica !
This song is about is about hitting bottom and the journey back from the addition death...asking forgiveness for the weakness within....struggle daily.
it could definitely be about drugs, but remains vague enough that it can be applicable to just about any sort of recovery. that's the beauty of the song.
Being someone who hit his personal bottom, these lyrics make me cry. I just can't believe how much I see myself in them. How I return to the "wrongs" I did, how the climb just leaves me powerless. And the world is not stopping for me. I barely keep up with it
"You bring this dog in from the rain but he just walks right back out again." Great analogy of drug users that are brought home, hugged, clothed, loved, promise to change, but go right back to that life the first time they see a hit. Its a sad sad sickness. I'm here to tell you that you can win! I used to burn up $5k per month and rolled out of bed one morning clean. That was 20 years ago!
janes the genious hetfieild ....he is so unaware of how he touches peoples emotions with his songwriting n the thing is every one can listen to this get an emotion totally diffrent from the next person , great song !
I'd just like to thank Emma for introducing me to this track & apologise to Emma & whoever else cares (for writing Mettalica off, based on their image & too few listens.) I was wrong & will be listening to much more Mettalica to make up for lost time. New love.❤& respect for Mettalica & all Metallica fans. & Emma, you was right & I was wrong.
It´s kind of sad, when im listening to this or unforgiven II, that a lot of people despise them and treat them as shitty songs with nothing to offer... Closing your mind is dumb, like really, thinking that any music that is not Thrash metal sucks... Well, at least some of us get to enjoy this gems.
This song always made me move so much that I always end up in tears listening to it as a lonely introvert teenage guy who had no friends at all. This song's lyrics are so deep yet it's surprising to me most people couldnt undeestand the meaning of these lyrics. "And I cry, to the alleyway, Confessed all to the rain. But I lie, lie straight to the mirror, The one I broke, to match my face". It's a low man's lyric. A person who the society has rejected. Because he is not like them. He is an ugly low life. He dared to dream and touched the clean, with his dirty hands...but realizes that he touched the clean to the waste. His eyes seek reality and the reality is that he will remain a low man. So he is contemplating suicide, please forgive him for his deeds as he dreamt to love and be loved like everyone else. This is a song written by James for all people who are depressed and left alone by the world. A hugely underrated song with masterpiece lyrics.
This was my Uncles favorite song! I miss him so much even though i didnt know him that well people say i am a younger version of him! I wanna be just like him when im older he loved quitar and so do i
This aswell as bleeding me is about papa Het, and his addictions he was going through while making Load. Listen to mama said and Until it sleeps you will understand his view point with these songs and how much pain he was going through at the time
So underrated... I used to listen to that song on a tape recorded from radio. I couldn't find it years after, nobody mentions it in Metallica's videos I was about to think it was just a dream... I've just got back to that times
I got re load day it came out .. fell in love with this song plus others , my pal was a sound engineer and recorded this on one side of a cd .. over and over .. other side full album .. 2 hour drives home every week we’re my favourite... 14 times live .. seen cliff / Jason / and rob ... just love ❤️
December 27th 2017 this song is amazing .... Metallica is amazing and I'm listening to this with my 8 month old daughter I swear she understands she is so calm and quite and intrigued by the sounds from the speaker. Anastasia like this comment in the future if your listening.
I found this and another one of their songs and realized how many ignorant and stupid metalhead fans they have that can't appreciate simplicity. I love metal, but I'm open to all music. Unfortunately a lot of Metallica's "fans" hold them back. MORE THRASH LESS BALLAD!
Sloppy Joe You can't say Master of Puppets had shitty lyrics. One of their heaviest songs with lyrics that is talking against conformity. Just because lyrics don't have some kind of self enlightenment meaning behind it don't mean they aren't good. Most of Metallica's faster, heavier shit usually had lyrical subjects on War, Religion, Insanity etc, just because you don't like the subject matter, or just can't interpret the lyrics, does not mean the lyrics are bad. You just don't understand or relate with them is all.
I've been a die hard fan since ...And Justice For All, and I'm only 37 years old. I never considered them "sell outs". Fuck you if you've ever thought they were "sell outs".
#7 also. Ride the lightning was my first taste in my cousins car when I as like 5 and I thought the it was the cooliest. It was the first cassette I ever owned
This song just smashes my soul Everytime I hear it. I've lost 3 friends to overdoses. Enough is enough. There has to be a way to fix this epidemic. Just can't bear this shit anymore.
I totally agree. I honestly believe this song is underrated. It's so beautiful and the sound of the song something Noone ever heard before. I wish they would play this live
Strong song, full of feeling and pain bout what happens So pure and timeless. A slower beat of Metallica. Pure of sence, like a revealation.. beautiful! I cry to the alleway..
I would say the opposite... Before the Black Album, they were button mashers on the guitar... I know that's not really true, but I grew up with Black Album, and then Load and reload...After that, i'm not sure of the quality.
This song reminds me of a time when I was roaming around and stying at my garden shed at minus 20 celsius and almost no food, I saved firewood and bodyheat by staying under a thick blanket made from a feather matras and keeping my woolen hat on, I sometimes stole a little bread and took leftover brussels sprouts of the stems they thrown away, one time got a little food from someone... Gone down from a 120 Kilogram to 69 kilogram at 1 meter 86 centimeters... I am a healthy 110 kilograms now and got my strength back...
This song and unforgiven remind me so much of when i was in my addiction so much anger and so much hate, violence and just wanting to kill or hurt someone or myself couldn't control any part of my life but now i have stopped all drug use and see life very different but metallica helped me threw some of my darkest hours and I'll always be grateful to them for that
I've been told that I'm going to have to stop a sport I love, I've lost the girl I cherish dearly while she didn't feel the same all In one summer. And no matter what I do, I know I'm going to not be able to see friends I cherish again for a long time. But it's good to always know that your not the only person hurt. Thank you James Hatfield and thank you Metallica. I hope my children will love your music as I do now.
Don't know how many people understand the full context of the song. It's about the homeless and how many of them are drug addicted and so broken. Their eyes are seeking reality but at the same time while they want to get clean and get right their fingers seek the veins because the addiction is so strong and they feel dirty because of it to the point where even while begging for forgiveness, the soul of the low man says not to mourn his passing because he has been doing it for so long that he was due to be released from this mortal coil and no longer suffer. Having worked with homeless shelters during my teenage years and seeing a lot of this first hand, this song still has an incredible impact on me to this day. It is an absolutely amazing song.
I feel bad for the ‘Tallica fans who can’t appreciate the songwriting on these albums. They are faaaar more talented than simply pumping out thrasher after thrasher and Load/Reload demonstrate that talent 👍
Next to Nothing Else Matters and the Unforgiven II, this is my favorite Metallica song. It wouldn't break my heart if this would be the type of music they would put out for the rest of their careers.
As an artist as great Mztallica you influence people. So you have to be careful when you are the unknown Hero Of Day. Word is sharper than swords. Thx. YOU ROCK
wondrous song. I was a teenager in 1995, I liked 'the memory remains' etc. Now as an old 39yr old man, as a delusionary ;) man, reflecting on the musical merit of metallica, this song stands out very much for re-load, a wonderfull song. ' Than yo bring this poor dog in from the rain' is f*knen epic.
A great lonesome heroic poignacy theme and depiction taken from a movie's scene (ending part).. an addict's dying scene in a samall wooden barack on a rainy evening.. His dog irritated by the storm barking into the outside and the homeless man is back from saving the aloof-sought beauty protected and he's wounded, is to sooth himself by drug or he's loosing blood.. He that evenin saved her from death or a dangerous bebing begot.. and she is not aware it was her acquinted very "low man". That's really a lyric as-with..
I love this song so much!! And as awesome as it is I’d love to hear an unplugged version with James Hatfield and John Bush from Armored Saint in a duet!! And Kirk maybe playing a 12 string guitar

Hey everyone! I’m good, and getting better every day.
A little bit of backstory, I was addicted to opioids for years after breaking three vertebrae in a skiing accident about 10 years ago. I was a functioning guy but because of the medication reliance and eventual abuse, my time horizon consisted of 24 hours. Go to work, get home, get high repeat. It took me a few months to recover from paralysis, yet was paralyzed for years by the drugs. I’ve always been a very open and truthful person, but like James said, I would confess all to the alleyway but lie straight to the mirror.
I was waiting for my life to change and not doing anything to change it. I was treading water.
I made a lot of mistakes in my life and never forgive myself for any of them. Through some intensive self guided therapy with psilocybin mushrooms, I gained a perspective on my life at 38 years old that was incredibly illuminating. I realized that I do love myself, but Through childhood trauma etc., I was trained to do the opposite, hate myself. And so that’s how I lived.
A notification popped up about one of your comments and yesterday I listened to this song while riding my motorcycle and listen to it on repeat five times in a row. Crying the whole time. As James sang, “forgive me!”… and I did.
I said I’m sorry to myself, and forgave myself, out loud, in the helmet, while in traffic (thank goodness for tinted visors 😅).
I’m fighting for myself every day now, I meditate on gratitudes I have and things to be proud of. I still have my ups and downs but the best part about rock bottom is that it can only get better.

LOAD IS AN AMAZING ALBUM!!!!!!!!
Hetfield is a lyrical Genius
This song touches on multiple subjects including addiction, homelessness and forgiveness but primarily conveys a sense of regret. The protagonist desires forgiveness not only for what he has done but what he knows he will continue to do.
My eyes seek reality (He tries to see the truth)
My fingers seek my veins (He feels for his veins, so he can stick himself with a needle)
There's a dog at your back step, He must come in from the rain (He tries to find shelter from the harsh conditions he finds himself in
I fall 'cause I let go (He gives up)
The net below has rot away (Nothing/no-one is there to catch him as he falls, all his chances are up)
The trash fire is warm (The only comfort he has is that of a trash fire giving him heat and light)
No one's safe from the storm (No-one is safe from the effects of drugs)
And I can't bare to see, What I've let me be, So wicked and worn (He himself does not know who he has become and shows fatigue from the abuse of drugs)
So as I write to you (He is writing the suicide note/letter)
What is done and to do (What he has done in his life, and what he is going to do to end it)
Maybe you'll understand (Understand all the pain he has been through)
And won't cry for this man, 'cause low man is due (He is not worth your tears)
Please forgive me (Self explanatory really, he wants forgiveness)
Touch clean with a dirty hand (He is cleaning the needle)
I touched the clean to the waste (Injects the “clean” needle into his “wasted” skin)
So low the sky is all I see (He is in his grave looking up)
So you bring this poor dog in from the rain,
Though he just wants right back out again (You can give him shelter and put him in rehab, but he just wants to get back out there and look for his next fix)
And I cry, to the alley way, Confess all to the rain (With no other shelter, he rests in an alleyway and confesses his sins in the form of the note/letter)
But I lie, lie straight to the mirror (He even lies to himself that everything will be alright)
One I've broken, to match my face (His abuse of drugs has taken its toll physically)

This song is about accepting one's true nature. It combats the popular religious belief that you can be forgiven by confessing your sins. If you can't look at yourself and say that you've lived your life the right way or treated people well, then how will you ever feel like you're deserving of the good that life has to offer?

janes the genious hetfieild ....he is so unaware of how he touches peoples emotions with his songwriting n the thing is every one can listen to this get an emotion totally diffrent from the next person , great song !
best song ever ! this song never getting old !!!
I'd just like to thank Emma for introducing me to this track & apologise to Emma & whoever else cares (for writing Mettalica off, based on their image & too few listens.)
I was wrong & will be listening to much more Mettalica to make up for lost time.
New love.❤& respect for Mettalica & all Metallica fans.
& Emma, you was right & I was wrong.
So underrated!!!
what was great about metallic was their way they put variety in their albums. this is such a great song! so underrated as many have posted.
+Freddy silvas zamudio Close minded thrash elitists yep
This song always made me move so much that I always end up in tears listening to it as a lonely introvert teenage guy who had no friends at all. This song's lyrics are so deep yet it's surprising to me most people couldnt undeestand the meaning of these lyrics.
"And I cry, to the alleyway,
Confessed all to the rain.
But I lie, lie straight to the mirror,
The one I broke, to match my face".
The first song i cried to.
I still do.
This was my Uncles favorite song! I miss him so much even though i didnt know him that well people say i am a younger version of him! I wanna be just like him when im older he loved quitar and so do i
“The trash fire is warm…” I don’t know why that line resonates with me, but it just does.
Also, “And I cry to the alleyway, confess all to the rain”.
" And I cry to the alleyway, confess all to the rain, but i lie, lie straight to the mirror......." one of the best lines ever written.
Beautiful classic from MetallicA!
This aswell as bleeding me is about papa Het, and his addictions he was going through while making Load. Listen to mama said and Until it sleeps you will understand his view point with these songs and how much pain he was going through at the time
Shut the fuck up
2019 yet who's listening to this masterpiece
I love this just as much as the rest of Metallica songs
Me...
Will always be listening!
2021
The fact that it says 2019 is 2 years ago made my heart drop.
I agree, I rather have a Metallica song like this than one that's fast and heavy with shitty lyrics. For me for a song to be good are the lyrics
Sono d'accordo con te!... ( sorella di Saro )
Keith Graham Master of puppets was about drugs. "Taste me you will see, more is all you need. Dedicated to, how I'm killing you."
RadioHazardStudios "chop your breakfast on a mirror"
That Hurdy-gurdy. I wish more bands would use one.
I've been a die hard fan since ...And Justice For All, and I'm only 37 years old.
I never considered them "sell outs".
Fuck you if you've ever thought they were "sell outs".
thank you
#7 also. Ride the lightning was my first taste in my cousins car when I as like 5 and I thought the it was the cooliest. It was the first cassette I ever owned
Keith McKay You are right
Keith McKay you're damn right they're sell outs. They sell out every venue they play at.
This song just smashes my soul Everytime I hear it. I've lost 3 friends to overdoses. Enough is enough. There has to be a way to fix this epidemic. Just can't bear this shit anymore.
S.E. Sander Damn... Sorry for your loss man
I hope your still hanging in there my heart goes out to you
Best song from Reload ❤❤❤
I totally agree. I honestly believe this song is underrated. It's so beautiful and the sound of the song something Noone ever heard before. I wish they would play this live
One of the most underrated songs of all time.
Reminds very country Usa folk styling songs !? ..'want to cry for this'..!!! Sach a emocyonal great ballad !!!
Strong song, full of feeling and pain bout what happens
So pure and timeless. A slower beat of Metallica. Pure of sence, like a revealation.. beautiful!
I cry to the alleway..
they say after the black album metallica is garbage i beg to differ
Those people are fucking idiots
I think after Black album is Metallica best.
Jerry Pennington Load, Reload, and Saint Anger are criminally underrated
I would say the opposite... Before the Black Album, they were button mashers on the guitar... I know that's not really true, but I grew up with Black Album, and then Load and reload...After that, i'm not sure of the quality.
The Black Album is garbage.
This song I really enjoyed as a child. Now, as an adult who has battled and overcome addiction, this is my favorite song.
3:48 the song sounds so dark. My favorite metallica song
sarap pakinggan lalo pag naka headset🤘🤘 pashout out idol James Lars kirk & jason
I listen to this song to feel better, it just hits so hard
Those couple of voice cracks from James here and there add a lot of emotion to the song. I'm glad they left those in instead of patching them.
Low Man's Lyric, Fade To Black, Some Kind Of Monster, Ride The Lightning, All Nightmare Long, And The Day That Never Somes Are My Favorite.
The Higher Power whatever, we have this till we die
exactly!! any similar suggestions?
What a song! Absolutely as beautiful and strong as the other ones of them!
Loved both the music and lyrics...awesome
Long live Metallica 🤘
Mama Said, Low man’s Lyric, Fixxer, and Hero Of The Day are some of the most underrated emotional songs of Metallica.
James is a poet
Just wanna life better than ever
As an artist as great Mztallica you influence people. So you have to be careful when you are the unknown Hero Of Day. Word is sharper than swords. Thx. YOU ROCK
The song relates to me more than most songs ever have.
I got goosebumps when he starts the trash fire is warm that whole part is crazy my favourite metallica song i agree it is unrrated
This song reminds me of the depth of my addiction. Played it on Marshall speakers and headphones while using. I’m depressed so playing this!!
So mellow yet so heavy... wow
Still listening june 2k18
I love how you can hear the hurdy gurdy's "buttons", it makes it sound more depressed
One of the most underrated understated songs ever
So calm and beautiful....
Thanks bro
I've just had a good time following the lyrics
wondrous song.
That Dog is an Allusion to his drug addiction,
just like an addict, no matter how often you get into rehab, they return to drugs.
Best song ever!!!!!!!!!!
Que canción amigo, muchas gracias por subtitularla
Love this song...the hurdy-gurdy sounds awesome. \m/
Good job. Thanks for beautiful lyrics. Another brilliant poetry.
I do love this song.
damn james was really depressed when writhing this song....shees.
This song makes me cry
I can relate to this song. Its has Special place in my heart.
If you are really returning the favour, I am subscribing now :p Thanks for the subtitles by the way, it helps me sing this song as a karaoke :)
A lot of Metallica songs would fit well in movie scenes. Like Bleeding Me to me would fit in a scene where a guy visits his parents grave.
I love this song so much!! And as awesome as it is I’d love to hear an unplugged version with James Hatfield and John Bush from Armored Saint in a duet!! And Kirk maybe playing a 12 string guitar
Bu parçanın mükemmelliğini 30 yaşımdan sonra anladım.
