@@SuperJohnny617 Apparently everything except the orchestra was rerecorded in the studio...... Including James' vocals.... Which apparently were also touched up in the studio. Here's a link to a bootlegged version from the first two S&M shows. You can notice a difference in James' voice, as the crack at the end doesn't sound the same. th-cam.com/video/sq9ExKWEQDE/w-d-xo.html I hope I haven't ruined the song for you now. But hey I guess we kinda did get the studio version we always wanted.
It took me 20 years to get my dad into Metallica. He’s a big 80s Euro- electronic rock guy. While I do enjoy bands like Depeche Mode and the like Metallica is always number one for me. This song finally pushed him into being a fan and I’m glad we get to share this.
Similar, my old man digs adult-contemporary and some grunge, but when he heard me replaying this band over and over again as a kid, he looked em up and even found some tracks he likes. Helluva solid bond between us these days.
Jame's voice sounds so INCREDIBLY dead in tune throughout this show... almost an auto-tune quality to it. I wonder if he had a special vocal training for this show or if the reference of the orchestra helped him to be more spot on, but man this vocal performance is the best of his carreer.
Apparently they did do work on his voice post show (maybe autotune?) for THIS specific song. I guess it mattered because it's technically the "studio" version. But they left the live audio for the rest of the show.
As far as I know he overdubbed the vocals in studio later because as Sirzechs already said it's the official recording of that song. But James was vocally in an exceptional shape during the 90s anyways, Load and Reload are full of vocal gems.
Props to the symphony's musicians. They have to not only play orchestrated Metal music, but they have to drown out the crowd's reactions to the songs. S and M clearly shows the incredible musicianship of Metallica.
The crowd only clapped when songs were over or started. But I heard they were well behaved and only a select few got to see this. RIP Michael Kamen. You were a genius.
@@ralphchurch2263 Then who was singing along with the band? That can be distracting also. Have you heard the follow up album S&M2? I just ordered online. I can't wait until it shows up. The first album was fantastic, especially Master of Puppets.
They interviewed some of the classical musicians after these sessions and they were astounded at the amount of energy these guys exude. They had difficulty keeping up sometimes.
When James Hetfield ends with: "Then it comes to be here, hayyaaah" Sounding like he almost is losing his voice and still keeps on going. He made such a timeless scene with a melodious voice that in harmony with what is metal all about keeps going to the end in such a meaningful song. This is one of the best performances in metal history, coming from a Megadeth fan.

Well the genre fractured. But plenty got fairly big. Slipknot, Mudvayne, Bullet for My Valentine, and underOATH to name a few. Linkin Park was new metal, Coheed and Cambria is prog with heavy metal influence. I mean, should I keep going until I stumble upon what you consider their equal?

The teacher I had last year in 6th grade introduced me to the S&M album, and this is his favorite song on the album. On the weekend of my second week of 7th grade, Me, my dad, my friend, and his dad all went to see Metallica on August 4th. I just wish my teacher would've been there, but he couldn't go. Thanks Mr. Webb, for heavily impacting my musical interests, or else I might not have even known who Metallica was. Rock on Mr. Webb!😝🤘
did anyone else hear hetfield sing 'then it constipated' again and again? we had a drinking game when we were younger... every time james growls and says 'yeah', drink. trust me... you will wind up in the hospital. our drinking games were closer to genocide than anything... hmm. i guess im apologetic i put that thought in your heads. still did, tho. we were young and effing strong. went to a metal show not too long ago. some guy had a metallica tshirt that said 'it shouldve been lars'.. i cant entirely commiserate. i never met the guy. that said? i get it. it shouldve been lars.
In 7th grade I had to fill out a "get to know you" form for my Social Studies teacher. For the question "what is your favorite song", I wrote No Leaf Clover by Metallica. Lol my 12 year old self knew what he was doing.
One thing I noticed after all this time of listening to this record, listen to how much louder the crowd was after this song.... could you imagine being there live to experience it. Those who did are truly lucky.
@@SJ-ty5rw Don’t understand the hate for Load. There is a ton of good music on that album. In fact, if this song had been a studio release without an orchestra, stylistically, this song could have slotted right in with Load or Reload.
@@HypeWrecks I do admit now many years later . That their is some good songs they did . But at the time , people have to understand it was such a big style change from what they had done with Justice , and TBA . The song writing went from stuff like Harvester of Sorrow , to Aint My Bitch . And the riffs had much more funky feel to them . And stuff like Hero of the Day , almost felt like a different band , to what they were previously . But looking back they had some great songs like Bleeding me , and The Memory remains . Different style but still good stuff .
I remember being in high school and watching this live on tv. I sh!t myself when I heard this and I rocketed through the roof. No one will ever be able to top Metallica. I don't care for much of Metallica after this but I will always be a huge fan. Hell, I play guitar because of them. Love you guys and I miss Jason.
This track just brought tears to my eyes, that beautiful mold between metal and classical is just overwhelming. It's done done so fucking well. I'm not the biggest Metallica fan but I recognise they are absolute legends and own all of their albums and can recognise their songs instantly. But this track knocked it out the park where musicial prowess came together with entirely different genres. AMAZING.
I just can't listen to this song only one time - always twice at least. Once I've listened to it by taking-off in a plane and my eyes were full of tears of pleasure. God bless you, Hetfield, for your voice, lyrics and divine guitar playing. My heart belongs Metallica forever 💘🤘🏻

A masterpiece!!!!... for those who criticize Metallica for switching from heavy metal to mild or softer metal, don’t forget that age is a factor as the group gets wiser and less aggressive on instruments.
I like the sounds of Symphonic Metal and this is one song that fits right into that genre. I remember getting the CD off Napster 14 days before release. That was when Metallica sued them.
They didn't "switch". They evolved, became even more creative, deep, and experienced. Their music showed it. The "critics" that say otherwise are just sad. Metallica rules!!!
I think it gets boring when a band makes a record that sound like every other record they've made. None of Metallicas albums sound the same, thats what made them huge I believe. Best song by Metallica and never even ended up on any official studio album. Man, this was like their spirit leaving the body for good.
W
I always wished this had a non live version but that might have meant no orchestra, so it would've been ruined potentially
It is great song! Buy the the best Metallica song? Wtf you talking about man? ?
wtf this is live ? i could swear its studio how amazing is this song jesus
@@SuperJohnny617 Apparently everything except the orchestra was rerecorded in the studio...... Including James' vocals.... Which apparently were also touched up in the studio.
Here's a link to a bootlegged version from the first two S&M shows. You can notice a difference in James' voice, as the crack at the end doesn't sound the same.
th-cam.com/video/sq9ExKWEQDE/w-d-xo.html
I hope I haven't ruined the song for you now. But hey I guess we kinda did get the studio version we always wanted.
ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED METALLICA SONGS IN MUSIC HISTORY!!!! ❤❤❤❤ the solo is ingenious!! Absolutely orgasmic and magical
*"THEN I'M CONSTIPATED!!!! THEN I'M CONSTIPATED!!!! THEN I'M CONSTIPATED!!!!*
It took me 20 years to get my dad into Metallica. He’s a big 80s Euro- electronic rock guy. While I do enjoy bands like Depeche Mode and the like Metallica is always number one for me. This song finally pushed him into being a fan and I’m glad we get to share this.
Same w my mom!!
*"THEN I'M CONSTIPATED!!!! THEN I'M CONSTIPATED!!!! THEN I'M CONSTIPATED!!!!*
Similar, my old man digs adult-contemporary and some grunge, but when he heard me replaying this band over and over again as a kid, he looked em up and even found some tracks he likes. Helluva solid bond between us these days.
R.I.P. Michael Kamen. No Leaf Clover and S&M are a masterpiece.
I would guess the orchestra helped
As far as I know he overdubbed the vocals in studio later because as Sirzechs already said it's the official recording of that song. But James was vocally in an exceptional shape during the 90s anyways, Load and Reload are full of vocal gems.
Arguably one of the best bands ever. I think so.
Thank you, Metallica, and the orchestra, for what might be the best song ever written and performed.
Gold statement
@@catherinewilliams9680 No idea guess I can't hear that haha. And I'm gonna have to find that album.
@@ralphchurch2263 I would recommend S&M if you like their early stuff. Like I mentioned, their rendition of Master of Puppets is fabulous.
@@catherinewilliams9680 I will definitely check it out. Anything Metallica I'll listen to. Been listening to them for 20 years.
Of the hundreds of kick ass riffs that Metallica have created over the past 30 years, 03:41 may be my favorite. So simple, but so effective.
*"THEN I'M CONSTIPATED!!!! THEN I'M CONSTIPATED!!!! THEN I'M CONSTIPATED!!!!*
Yep, ✌️😎
Metal keeps me sane, keeps me going, fighting another day. It's the best form of therapy ever. 🤘❤️🔥
They interviewed some of the classical musicians after these sessions and they were astounded at the amount of energy these guys exude. They had difficulty keeping up sometimes.
*"THEN I'M CONSTIPATED!!!! THEN I'M CONSTIPATED!!!! THEN I'M CONSTIPATED!!!!*
I truly believe your brother
I always wondered if any of the orchestra members who weren't into Metallica before ended up being fans!
Best band ever. Metallica’s songs will never die.
When James Hetfield ends with:
"Then it comes to be here, hayyaaah"
Sounding like he almost is losing his voice and still keeps on going. He made such a timeless scene with a melodious voice that in harmony with what is metal all about keeps going to the end in such a meaningful song.
This is one of the best performances in metal history, coming from a Megadeth fan.

This, Enter Sandman, Fade To Black, King Nothing, Fuel, and The Memory Remains are among my all time favorite Metallica hits.
Orion, To live is to die
Personally i'd remove king nothing for hell and back
I Disappear
I can't do Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters anymore. I would add Low Man's Lyric, Unforgiven II
Seek & Destroy is quite powerful.
take a moment to appreciate this was recorded live and they fuckin' nailed it.
they must've rehearsed the shit of this one to get it so tight and perfect.
metallica was and is the last metal band to become a household name. Almost everyone knows Metallica. Even when they don't "know" Metallica, they've probably heard Enter Sandman at some point in their lives. Can't say that about any other metal within the past 30+ years.
james re did some of the vocals in studio afterwards because this was the single for the album and he wanted it to be perfect
I think i hear some autotune at his vocal in this one. Am i right?
@@SilenceSupreme indeed, there is a bit of autotune in this
Haha yea they recorded this live, your a special kind of stupid.
The buildup at 3:42 and the guitar solo is electrifying. Like every inch of your body is on fire. Whew!
*"THEN I'M CONSTIPATED!!!! THEN I'M CONSTIPATED!!!! THEN I'M CONSTIPATED!!!!*
James' voice that pierces to the bone, music that sends shivers down your whole body.
Love this band, came to this video to hear the song without realizing that my dad most certainly contributed to the 8 million views. He passed away a couple months ago and I treasure this great music more than ever
Absolutely love this song, especially Hetfield's suprisingly good voice. It gives me strength when I want to give up.

I've been a Metallica fan for 30 years. And I still say, that this song is far the BEST this band have ever created.
Easily one of James’ best performances. I know we all love their peak thrash phase, but James got really show some range with this one. So good 🤘
My favorite Metallica song ever. Period. And if you're here reading the comments, it's yours too. Welcome friends.
If I had to choose one song I had to listen to every single day, it would defenitely be this one.
This is perfection.
It gives me the chills!...I absolutely love love LOOOVE this song!!!

That’s how you know a really good tune. Same
1:29 That subtle contrast between the orchestra and the band is a thing of absolute beauty.
This will always be the most metal song ever. No band has ever gotten on any stage with that much talent and skill, all present to play such a powerful song that crosses barriers between genres.
It is hard to compare metal songs from different eras. Led Zeppelin had some World beating classics as did Deep Purple and Iron Maiden.

this music turns my soul with classical music, James' voice is incredible and the whole thing is like a damn good opera, I love it, catharsis at the highest level!
Rock on Mr. Webb!😝🤘
ChaseH- AZ your teacher introduced you to S&M? That doesn't sound right 😂
It’s good to know kids are still listening to real music.
rock on, mr webb. wherever you are. thank you for teaching this one about us.
did anyone else hear hetfield sing 'then it constipated' again and again? we had a drinking game when we were younger... every time james growls and says 'yeah', drink. trust me... you will wind up in the hospital. our drinking games were closer to genocide than anything... hmm. i guess im apologetic i put that thought in your heads. still did, tho. we were young and effing strong. went to a metal show not too long ago. some guy had a metallica tshirt that said 'it shouldve been lars'.. i cant entirely commiserate. i never met the guy. that said? i get it. it shouldve been lars.
Your teacher was Marlon Webb? 😂
Gives me chills every time. Hetfield's voice man...
In 7th grade I had to fill out a "get to know you" form for my Social Studies teacher. For the question "what is your favorite song", I wrote No Leaf Clover by Metallica. Lol my 12 year old self knew what he was doing.

ya they never played it in a recording studio right?
2021 ... still one of the most intense pieces of music ever written!!!
Edit : 2022* 🤘🏼
Imo this was one of their best .. songs they ever wrote . I remember when it came out . Beat anything they had done with the Load albums easily .
Beautiful and haunting classic James Hetfield lyrics

A masterpiece and the pinnacle in the work of the band, IMHO.

AMAZING.
Same, was not expecting tears, forgot how good this song is.
Haha. Crybabies cone back and listen again, this is grand

From the very first time i heard this song, I totally liked it!
One of my favorite songs by far, the solo is just amazing! listening to Metallica since im 10 long 25 years!
I think I can speak for everyone here when I say that Michael Kamen got to conduct one of the greatest concerts in metal history
Every time I hear this song, I think this would be a perfect James Bond main intro.
Actually pretty accurate
Im kicking myself for not thinking of this sooner. Will make a great bond soundtrack!
Have to agree
Never thought of that!
Better than Billie Ellish or Sam Smith, that's for sure.

Plenty of bands the same age as Metallica's members who didn't put out LuLu.
I think it gets boring when a band makes a record that sound like every other record they've made. None of Metallicas albums sound the same, thats what made them huge I believe. Of course there will always be crybabies who say the same shit over and over again about Metallica how they are not thrash anymore, so fucking what
