    No kidding on buried lines. Even when areas are supposedly marked, sometimes lines can be missed. Just ask the residents of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. A year or so ago a utility construction company hit a gas line and a downtown street blew up. One person died. Really important message today. Can never be too safe.

      so true- buried lines can be buried problems and can kill. I have seen a hit electrical main stand on end sparking.

    Love your videos. Seeing you overcome your issues with impossible lands , nosey neighbors and things the way they just have to be... I find amazing. Stan, in a future video you mentioned you would be talking about some financial issues with divot ends...(dividends..heh heh.. small joke) doing away with pot holes I think would be fun to watch. With the fly mower, be sure to bring lots of honey, because of the old saying "you catch more flys with honey than you do with vinegar" heh heh another small joke. Enjoying what I am watching! And yes I am crazy. God bless and go get em!!!

    After watching this and some past personal experiences, I can truly say I'm happy that all the excavation work that needs to be done on our new property will not have any hidden old buried utility lines. We're planning on building our new house in the middle of an old hay field. Trees were removed decades ago and nothing has been added except for the hay. So it's a clean slate to work with! The only problem I can see is that it's mostly sand under a few inches of topsoil. Nothing real firm to build on. Lots of buried rocks to move. I wish I had someone to converse with about this project that would work with me that I can trust. Most of the contractors I've talked with seem like they only want the money for the work and not my comfort. When they say "trust me", I don't. Convince me first, then you won't have to say that. I could go on and on with this topic but I won't. But anyway, thanks for the video! Most people (that I've dealt with) don't want other people to see their confusion in a project. Your guys handle it well and explain their solutions in ways that are easy to understand. I look forward to more videos!

      Yup, surest way i know for someone not to be trusted by me is them saying "trust me" - because almost always it'd be a mistake.
      EARN my trust by showing what you can do, or answer my questions - if you can't, or won't, then bye...

      Don't live up to your on-line name - in context, the OP is clearly referring to a reassurance that the contractor can actually do the job properly.
      There are many things I can do, or have some knowledge of, that I need to pay someone else to do - if they don't make me feel comfortable about having them do the work, and even 'fob off' questions, someone else gets the work.

    Hey Stan. I have some bad news. I’m addicted to skid steers. I love watching them and running them. Luckily it’s not the worst addiction out there. I was in a skid steer for 6 hours today moving manure solids at work. I think I found a substance so squishy your ASV couldn’t float on. I stepped off the concrete pad and sank 3 feet in my rubber boots. So I’m 75% sure your ASV would not be able to climb the big pile of solids. Anyway have a great day Stan.

    Great timing! About to tear out my front walk and put in a paver patio. I better call today so lines are marked by end of next week.
    I have to drop the level of my yard right in front of the house because the retaining wall holding it back is too tall and not well built I'm going to put in another (new) wall. It'll be a good 10 feet back from the existing and I should be able to keep it under 24 inches so not a big drop off the patio. The patio will fill in everything from the new retaining wall to the garage. That's all rock and wasted space now. The tough part will be getting the top of the new retaining wall level with the pavers, if I can. I'm thinking I should backfill the retaining wall with the class 5 base compacted in lifts so the edge of the paver patio doesn't settle. Wish me luck!

    Sam has good taste in music. Grateful he and Blaine is not Dead with this dangerous mess.
    With the dangerous combo and from the footage in the video. As an electrician, that cable that Sam points out @18:37 is not to NEC (National Electric Code), that cable needs to be buried at least 4 feet deep to the top of the cable no matter what it takes to get the depth. If it was me I would have it buried 4 1/2- 5 feet feel with 6-8 inches of course sand on top then metal "buried cable" marking tape on top of the sand, this helps to prevent future excavations on the property from hitting the cable with equipment.
    The closest I have ever seen gas and electric buried close to each other has been a 2-foot linear distance parallel to each other, NEVER EVER stacked on top of each other. I have run water and electricity parallel in the same trench, but never gas and electric.

    Utilities passed the original structure here have to be buried 18" deep even in rock, and marked with warning tape. Gas lines must have a tracer wire along with the warning tape. We have hit those unmarked lines planting trees, installing irrigation and grading. Not fun but not the worst, try cutting a un marked gas line at a senior housing center, 5 fire departments, 15 ambulances, and a court case on who pays for the responce.

    I’m sure you guys have done it before and doing it with the skid steer works and pretty close too but most the time if we have to be pretty close on straight lines when removing sod/grass we take a flat shovel and will go along the lines not digging just cutting and when we come in to remove, it just leaves a perfect clean line. Used the bucket blade to do it before too. Just sharing a way that we do it a few states away. Cheers from Ohio🍻

    Dude, I had a Flymow when I was a kid. Only had an 18 inch cut width. I used it extensively mowing around my neighborhood, which was once part of a swamp. You still had swampy areas with this thin needle like grass that would grow out of it. Trying to take anything into those areas was bad news. Even had a neighbor's kid that thought he was hot stuff, under bid me on the yards, then proceeded to sink his dad's 40HP tractor past the axles. The idiot did this again and again just pulling it out with his dad's tow truck. Rutted the area up so very bad. Did this to three lots before people started turning him away. I did, however, get paid to repair the damage he did. No one second guessed my method after that. I charged by the hour, but was fair, honest, and hard working. Those swampy areas took time to keep the looking good and not get over run with reeds.

    20:00 Wow. Either the local codes are weak or there is no permit on those underground lines.
    Not deep enough.
    Lines should be laid beside each other not on top of each other.
    No warning tape.
    Lines should always be located and customer always pays the cost. I make it clear to the customer that it's not negotiable.
    I call the locator and you pay the locator.
    That way you know it was done right by your guy and the customer knows there's a fee coming they have to cover. You then will never cut corners on locating cause it's above and beyond the construction contract. Sorry I feel strongly about this.

    Scary close call to have. Good rule of thumb to those who do install these even in your own yard, keep good records of exact locations, and if you can place danger tape (better yet utility tape, it's magnetic and says the type of line) at least 12" over the top of the line itself when backfilling. Backfilling with a different material in the trench is also good as it gives an indication that something has been dug before..... but obviously on a private property this creates a higher cost.

    Great project to follow! Can't wait for more videos on it! Stan, as it comes closer to winter plowing season this autumn, would you be able to do some comparisons on after market or replacement plow lights? I have an older Fisher Minute Mount 2 with upgraded Sylvania H4656 sealed beam headlights, which are a bit better than the originals, but I couldn't find reasonably priced LED replacement lights that fit my 3 plug set up that weren't garbage. The internet was flooded with crappy ads for what seemed like the same generic replacement lights, but there wasn't a lot of good data. I know there are some higher end lights out there, but as far as the reviews go, each person has their opinion, but it doesn't mean that it is fact. And price is always a sticking point for those of us that plow just a few driveways to take care of a few people. I would love to see the side by side comparisons if you could. Just a thought. Stay Safe!!!

    We had a gas line blow up underground, gas company tried saying it was just a leak that eventually found it’s way out but it definitely blew and they were covering it up. About a half mile radius was without gas for 2 and a half days(this happened during February which is our coldest time). It blew basketball size chunks of road and dirt 100s of yards. Shut a main intersection down. When I was younger I didn’t understand how dangerous stuff like that could be and I never got locates on smaller jobs but as I grew up I realized you just can’t chance it and take the hone owners words.

    My father once cut the water main{6 inch}i n a sub-division the catch is it was marked on the wrong side of the road. I was too young to know who was to blame. In short he cut the whole division off.

    Ummmm, as I understand it, running a Gas line right beside an Electric Cable is a PRETTY HUGE FUCKING NO-NO!!! according to most Building and Electrical Codes I'm aware of...
    Was a Permit pulled when those lines were installed?

    • @Dirtmonkey
      @Dirtmonkey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      in my book it is a huge no no as well. I don't know anything about a permit before we shoed up

    • @steadyeddie7553
      @steadyeddie7553 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I worked for a gas & electric utility in NYS. Code allows gas, electric, phone & cable in the same trench. Pipe/ must be 24” deep, gas on one side, the electric on the other, with phone/cable next to the electric. There must be a 12” minimal horizontal separation between the gas & the other utilities.

  • @c4psswe950
    @c4psswe950 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Het Stan, you should get the boys a electric cable finder like Leica (we call em sword) there are several brands out there, but they can be a life saver, and if gas sometimes goes with electrics then you know for sure.
