so true... looking in social media also makes an artist confused and lose his authentic art style. Solitude is very important, that's the time you're imagination and creativity will function
Yeah... I kinda lost my willingness to study and practice for a (fortunately) short period, before realising that I'm not actually pushing myself. For a while, I was drawing WHILE thinking about posting it before even finishing anything. It just felt so wrong, so I've stopped posting every other day and settled for twice a week.
As a viewer I never understood how artists manage to upload so many videos so often... finding all this time to create art as well as videos really perplexes me...and actually I never found it necessary...why should someone keep bombarding people with content? What I'm trying to say here is that good artists ARE noticed by viewers even if they don't present something every day. And viewers are also busy people and can't follow all this speedy content that's so fashionable. I really liked today's video because it's about the ESSENCE of creating art. Quality is worthier than quantity. More artists should watch your video. Everyone needs to slow down a bit. We're losing life over numbers...
Thank you!! Funny thing, I'm a watercolor beginner and yesterday I decided to follow the steps for your water lily painting (the first video on your channel). I was eager to finish so I could share my progress with my friends, but then I realized I wasn't that happy with the result, I knew I could do better and just rushed it because I was driven to share it. I decided to take my time from now on and really focus on learning, improving and having fun while painting! Social media can wait. Thank you for the insights!
Thank you very much. How much time I've wasted, searching for answers, 'how to paint' etc . when what was most needed was for me 'to paint'. Again, thank you fran in NM 84 and still learning, hopefully by 'painting'.
I really appreciate this post, Eric. I'm also a painter, and I have been encouraged to start an Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr - some sort of social media account to share my work. So far, I've resisted that pressure/urge, precisely because I feel that it could become an impediment to the work itself, which is my first love. Perhaps, at some point, I will create an account to share my work, but, at this point, I want to concentrate on the work. Thanks again!
Nice one! Exactly the reason why i dont waste time on instagram, twitter, tumblr etc etc, but focus on mastering my so far basic skills in watercolor. Less hurry more precision.
Your warning about social media is important. Artists can become totally disenchanted with their work when it is 'commercialized.' It is a fine balance between making art for joy and practice vs. as a business. Love your work Eric. Thanks for sharing it with all of us but we will follow you even if you don't post every day!
I 've been searching out quality watercolour instruction for the past year and a half. When I first started, pretty stylized pictures were a big attraction to me but as I progressed I came to the understanding that these styles lacked the depth that would support my long term goals. There are many fine graphic artist out there but far fewer fine artists. It is much faster to knock off graphics than to create more complex art pieces. There have been some site that I have unfollowed because I wanted more in style. Even more interesting though, the constant barrage of superficial material just became TOO MUCH. If you flood your audience they will eventually drown. I look forward to each of your posts because I know it will be time well spent. There is a reason you get such great ratings.
Thank you Eric, my very thoughts on social media and you said it so well! You are an excellent painter and instructor, I've been an artist & teacher for 50 years and I appreciate your posts and honesty! God bless you and your brushes!
A month ago I decided to learn Arts, I encourage artist by buying many courses on Udemy, then I look at FB and really overwhelmed by all the Artists I find everyday! Beginning to wonder if it's a contest , competition! out there! Discovered your channel a couple weeks ago , I always come back to it because besides the beautiful painting you make, I really like the way you speak with nice calm voice and with honesty . That also makes a big difference , Its not always the painting we choose, but the soul behind it and I see you definately touch many people out there ! AT least they take time to leave you comments of gratitude ,but they seem to forget to hit the like button which I think is important for you. So please People d'ont forget to hit the LIKE! Eric really deserves it! He is a Great Soul
Hi Eric, it’s “comforting” (Sorry not the best word choice) to know that even professional artists like you may be under the social medie pressure. I’m an amateur painter who recently purchased your watercolor course and following your lessons makes me feel a bit grounded like I have an actual teacher. Thank you.
Many artists don't realize being a slave to social media steals precious time from art making. The point of a good gallery was/is to handle the business side of art, leaving the artist free to do their work. Making videos, managing social media platforms and keeping up with the newest technology means having less time to do art, period. Fame is fleeting. Finished product is forever. I myself prefer to do what I love best, although clearly many disagree.
There is a lightness to your style that lends to how one feels while looking at your works, and that is my main objective in creating my art, to affect others. I am currently getting into the Faber Castell watercolor pencils, after using the Faber Castell Polychromos pencils, where are the exact same color line and numbers for the watercolors... lately, some of my works are too nice to sell, and I prefer to just hang on to them, or price them at prices that would allow me to let them go at $50,000... Social media traps are ok for us, to get our regular dose of praise for our works, which I feel is highly motivational to a point...
Excellent job. I love the painting. Beautiful work. Beautiful model. I appreciate your explanations of what you did and why it was important. I also heartily agree to slow down. Paint for yourself and your desire to get the job done to your satisfaction, not the big media. If you end up painting for them and not yourself your work product will suffer and your audience will take note of that fact.
Yes I was thinking about the very same thought while working on a painting. Sometimes the pressure to just get it done just pulls the creativity and desire for me to do it. I paint purely what I enjoy now and won’t touch work that doesn’t inspire me. It just isn’t worth it. Lovely painting.
I love the subject of this video!! I have been rushing sometimes to finish my art real quick or post anything between now and then but very quickly and that made me feel like i am in a rush always and that the drawing needs to look good always. And that made me uncomfortable and not enjoying art. This video made me realize this . And I will start loving and appreciating art more starting from now on ❤️!
Eric, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. So much of your teaching and demonstrating focuses on technical mastery and I have learned enormously from you about technical things. At the same time, the heart of the artist-creator cannot be learned. One can have all the technical skill in the world and not be an artist. Sharing as you did today, made me think more on this. Your artistry is much, much more than the sum of your techniques. When you don't post, I miss your videos, but I would much prefer that you didn't post and had fun with your family or took all the time you wanted to be inspired, or even to rest. You have built a faithful following who respect and admire your work. If you never posted again, I would still be happy for all you have shared so far ... no pressure on you, and thank you for your gifts to us all. Your greatest gift is to be true to your heart.
Very well said, Eric and I agree wholeheartedly. As a creative person myself, I understand the effort it takes to produce artwork from concept to end product. I'm also a 'consumer' of TH-cam videos from artwork to comedy to politics. Having said that, I would never expect content creators to mass produce their product in order to stay relevant. Some artists posts weekly, while some post a video or two monthly....and some even let months slip by without posting anything. Regardless, the creators I sub to eventually pop into my 'recommends' and I eagerly watch their latest vid. I think it's safe to say that MOST people appreciate that creators are sharing, free of charge, for our entertainment/enjoyment and we are grateful! As for not seeing you in a while, that's akin to not seeing an old friend whom you effortlessly 'catch up' with, as though no time ever passed between your last meeting. So, Eric, don't worry about us...we'll be here. Enjoy your beautiful family, your art, your free time, your creativity, etc., and please don't ever feel pressured to keep us interested! And Merry Christmas (if you celebrate) to you and yours & all the best for an awesome 2021! Take care.
It has been quite some time since the last "coffee talk" video. I agree with what you discussed. I personally don't post unless I actually have something to either say or show. I used to however, but quickly realized that I'd rather be showing my best than trying to post as consistently as possible. It's easy to fall into the trap, but it's not worth posting something you, yourself, are not proud of.
No worries Eric; I definitely won't forget about you. So many things take our time, especially this year. I have been working, as you suggested, to set up my own personal space where I can paint; and find that it isn't as easy as I thought. So many things compete for the space; that I lose it as fast as I make it. but, I don't forget about you because of how you approach your work. I don't check every day; or sometimes every week. In fact his is the first time I've been here in almost a month but that's due to too many things to bore you with. But, I haven't forgotten that my goal is to spend more time painting. I look forward to life becoming easier in the next year. We hope! And I'm also waiting to get that good "lamp" source of light that I need for my personal space. The area I've selected does have a window near for a lot of external light; but, it can be very unforgiving; so, I'm wanting options. but, a good lamp requires money, and that can take time to get a good lamp. But, I'm really excited, and was happy to see you have some new videos for me to watch. That said, I have so many of your earlier videos, that I won't run out of videos from you for some time yet. Still so much more to learn. I'm not pushing it; as I want to learn, then practice and try it out before trying something else. Enjoying each new technique, or suggestion along the way! By the way, do you find Instagram as clunky as I have. I just added an account to post what I paint, or well, some of it. One so far. But, to make it work, I had to add space around a landscape painting (it's only basically a postcard) before Instagram would publish the whole painting, even though it was small. It seems if the image is not a square, Instagram doesn't like it. That's what I mean by clunky. I had to manipulate the image just to publish it, and also, I couldn't use my computer, I had to send it to my phone to publish it on Instagram. Now, that's clunky. I think perhaps Facebook paid too much for Instagram, and they're trying to get their money back before making it better. Or, they only want people who use phones to use it. Clunky! lol
I have learned sooo much from you & greatly appreciate the time you put into explaining your process. You help me THINK about what I am doing when I paint too. This painting is beautiful. Thank you
Eric, what a beautiful painting! I totally understand and believe what you say about social media in this day and age. Thank you for helping us to learn from you and your wisdom and experience! Stay well and keep doing what you love. It is so worth waiting to hear from you and enjoy your talent!
You are so right about the social media pressure. By the way, your loose water colour portraits have inspired me so much that I have decided that 2021 is going to be an year of portraits for me. I will be learning through your videos. Thanks.
Thank you for the timely message. I totally agree and find myself doing the rush job to post . I'm working on being a really good artist AND limiting my social media .
Thanks for your take on this subject Eric. I am now taking watercolour classes here in Venice (the real one, in Italy), but still i like to keep up with your progresses and keep you advices on a special place in my creative path with the watercolour output. Have a wonderful day, Luca
So true! As an art creator on TH-cam myself I very much agree and have fallen into the trap of rushing a painting or even deciding on what to paint based on how quickly I can get it finished and turn it into a video. It can be quite stressful so I’ve decided recently to concentrate more on quality over quantity so I can enjoy my art more again. Lovely painting, expertly done. Thank you 😊
Hmm I'm currently choosing quantity and consistency over quality. Previously I would get lazy, postpone painting because of anxiety and thus get less practice. Since the beginning of November I've committed to painting ánd posting something every day. Yes it's not always my best work but I am improving faster now as well. It is giving me structure in my daily routines during lockdown. It's making me more comfortable sharing my work as well and realise people sometimes do enjoy something that seems overworked to me. So to me, in the phase that I am in, it does feel beneficial.
I love this video and the painting also and so understand where you are coming from. I hardly use SM really but find it, or the pressure of thinking about it all, can invade my mind too much if I am not on guard! You have great videos to learn from so please continue but as you feel is best for you is so important.
I only started painting in the last two months...(after wanting to learn for decades). I have really enjoyed your videos and learned alot from them already.....Thanks !
There is also a second side to this that I learned during my time as a musician on TH-cam: Sometimes being too harsh with what you put out can really hurt the potential of your content. I used to be a perfectionist in a very unhealthy way. Someone who only puts out music once a month or even less frequently which in social media terms is ridiculous. This year I have become a little breaver with sharing music that I normally would not have shared a year ago - and people really love it. Obviously as an artist I also have to enjoy what I do as much as possible and take all the time that is necessary to finish something, but I realized that I don't need to put out masterpieces all the time in order to make my audience happy, which at the end of the day, is why my TH-cam channel exists. Some people also enjoy looking at or listening to art that you're not 100% comfortable with because they want to invest time into watching you grow and learn. But you're completely right that more often than not, the pressure from social media hurts art - TH-cam is naturally becoming a place where raw entertainment is far superior and it's getting so much harder to keep up without lowering quality. Mental health is also an issue here, because since I had created a schedule for my uploads, I feel pressured to stick to it. So remember to take the necessary breaks to breathe once in a while.
Nice to see you here! 😊 yeah its definitely a balancing act. Being on social media means I share my progress. I just want to do the best I can in every painting that I do. Doesn't mean it's going to be perfect :) I probably not going to be the type of artist who only shows up occasionally with amazing work. But I'll also try to avoid rushing art for social media sake 😊 Always enjoy and appriciate your music! Hope to hear more soon!
Just a beginner and really heeding your opening admonishment about not rushing ahead. Spent the last two weeks just trying to reacquire my drawing chops and I'm enjoying it.
Nice ideas. I am an amateur painter and I don't upload all of my paintings or drawings on Facebook (they are not wrong or creepy at all). I love painting outside, this is the hardest thing I've ever met, haha. Moreover I collect art books and study the old masters' works. And some online course (during this virus era) from real masters is also a good idea.
Imo focusing on social media is putting the cart before the horse. Then again, I dont need to focus on drawing for a living or anything, thats what the day job is for haha.
I think even those of us without a huge following can fall into the same trap, just wanting to finish something so we can post in a Facebook group or somewhere, looking for some positive feedback.
so true... looking in social media also makes an artist confused and lose his authentic art style. Solitude is very important, that's the time you're imagination and creativity will function

Social media is wasting a lot of time whilst I could have painted. Thanks for making me aware!

A lovely painting of a lovely young woman, and some very wise ruminations. Quality over quantity. Thank you for your thoughts!

I love your work and methodology... I would have put a book in her right hand !!!!
Great video and reminder about trying to please through social media, thank you. I love the painting, beautiful!
This is so beautiful. I appreciate very much how you explain the steps clearly, and having the key points highlighted on the side.

you are so genuine in sharing this. Thank u for being that. It can encourage others to be so too.
Beautiful! Yes, the trap of social media. I try to be aware of it as well. I used to do better in the blogging era.
I love this video and the painting also and so understand where you are coming from. I hardly use SM really but find it, or the pressure of thinking about it all, can invade my mind too much if I am not on guard! Nice to see you here! 😊 yeah its definitely a balancing act. Being on social media means I share my progress. I just want to do the best I can in every painting that I do. Doesn't mean it's going to be perfect :)
I probably not going to be the type of artist who only shows up occasionally with amazing work. But I'll also try to avoid rushing art for social media sake 😊
Always enjoy and appriciate your music! Hope to hear more soon!
I agree with everything you said. Thank you for pointing this stuff out.
Just a beginner and really heeding your opening admonishment about not rushing ahead. Spent the last two weeks just trying to reacquire my drawing chops and I'm enjoying it.
TY..I'm proud of you! I've seen and been aware of much the same...
I respect you, and it's my pleasure to watch your paintings masterpieces 😍😍😍
Lovely painting and wise words 🌈🙏
Amazing work! 😍
Good point about speed.
, a Eric. We live in an age where taking ime to smell the roses or to do your best. Thanks for the reminder.
Great analysis Eric, thanks
Thank you Eric! Beautiful! Your insights are awesome!
sir it's such a lovely painting ..... love it😍😍
Very very lovley painting 💞💞🎨🎨🎨 thank YOU very much for this great video 🌺😊🎨🎨
Yeah literally HOURS of potential drawing and painting time WASTED on browsing the internet. Digital detox urgently required!
Life lesson for everyone
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
You are so right!
It's a very beautiful portrait 👏
Imo focusing on social media is putting the cart before the horse. Then again, I dont need to focus on drawing for a living or anything, thats what the day job is for haha.
Your followers on Instagram like your paintings and can't see your mistakes because they don't know your thoughts, only you see them😉
So beautiful.😍. just one small question.. why did u decide to give blue in some parts of hair. It is not in the reference photo 🤔🤔
Computer entertainment has destroyed personal creativity. People are content to watch others create instead of creating themselves.
Very nice.
Hi Eric, are you going to do portrait courses as well?
Definitely thinking about it
Bravo👌
I think even those of us without a huge following can fall into the same trap, just wanting to finish something so we can post in a Facebook group or somewhere, looking for some positive feedback.
Good message
