    60 in June. Been going to a Gracie school since last July….LOVE IT ! I am chubby and out of shape but getting better slowly. My friends think I’m crazy. But I love the chess match, love my buddies at the school, love the exercise.
    I do feel like I have been hit by a bus most days, but I train 3-4 days a week and try to take a day in between to recover. Will I be a 70 year old black belt ?…who knows. But I’m enjoying the journey.

    Amazing Human Being at testament to his legacy and the the Legacy to Brazilian JiuJitsu! As a 14 year martial artist I am still relatively pretty young but having a base in the striking aspects of the martial arts there are some techniques that dont come as easily as they used to anymore. However w/ Jits i pray and hope i can keep going as long as Helvecio. Studying Jits for the past 2 years and watching this gives me huge inspiration! Obrigado!

    Really nice documentary on Master Helvecio. As a side note, there's a saying amongst Judokas: "Before 30 years old the randori is focused on Tewaza after 30 enjoy Newaza".

    I keep hearing the words Brotherhood and Cult in most of the BJJ Videos & mini documentaries. WHY ?

    • @coneryj
      @coneryj 11 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Cult? No. It's not that cult doesn't exist. It's not any more pervasive than in other groups...However, BJJ is different than any other martial arts. I'm not talking about technique. I'm talking about community. It's a community that extends far beyond your local school or even affiliated schools. Lots of people visit other schools when they travel. There are active forums where people from across the country/world will get to know each other and cross paths at tournaments or have friends in common.

    • @dozalb
      @dozalb 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That kinds of happen in every martial art, man. At least it happens in judo, too.

    • @coneryj
      @coneryj 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a whole different level. There are several factors. One is that it's a fairly young art where nearly all of the belts trace to a single founding family. There are cousins that own the different schools or people close to them. It's growth in the US is very new. So the seminars. Informational exchange and forums have grown with the art in the US. It hasn't matured into and large corporate franchises.

    AWESoME HUMAN BEING!

  • @underboss87
    @underboss87 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    He did some Judo, so what? It's like saying that a guy who did boxing until his early thirties and then became really good at BJJ has no credibility. Or a guy who just hit the gym 6 days a week, then started BJJ in his early thirties and got really good has no credibility. Not everyone finds BJJ when they're 10 years old and is black belt by 20.

    • @georgetsili3861
      @georgetsili3861 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not some judo Kim. He is judo black belt before. It's different from boxing or else.... If train in judo to the black belt level it's easier to adop you game to bjj

    What do you do when kids have behavior problems but say "jiu-jitsu," makes them uncomfortable? But then they develop worse behaviors the response is "there just kids," and jiu-jitsu/martial arts is hard so we don't like it. So they believe it is correct behavior to belittle, the true practitioner. I ignore it mostly but the harassment became more advanced and used techniques and technology to splice annoying signals and phrases. That were negative and self defeating in nature, I was homeless for a very long time and went through real hardships. Because of these signals if it wasn't for jiu-jitsu I wouldn't know if I would be alive.
