the commentary in this fight really was shocking, I think they were all issued blindfolds at the beginning and were told to make it up as they went along. Nope, not a surprise to me. Algieri landed more punches and took and controlled the flow of the fight. The Russian did land more power punches but power punches don't win fights and you don't need knockout power to win in boxing.

Algieri dug deep here to lend credence to the old boxer beats a brawler adage and I respect him for that. PAC is a class above him though so can't see that fight going his way at all.....showed a lotta heart in this fight though....and a decent boxing brain.
After the first round Chris completely shut out Provodnicov. People don't understand how tough Chris is. I was there. I know!! He's too tough!! He has much more power but he can hurt his hands easily. Best conditioned guy I have ever known in any sport. Chris just always wanted to be a master boxer. He loved Mike Tyson. Even at 12 he was very composed in the ring. Nothing ever bothers him. His left hook too the body is torture. When he goes to the body he is murderous. It can't hurt his hands so he punches much harder.
114:113 Algieri and I scored every close round for Provodnikov. You just don't win rounds landing two catchy hooks and getting punched in the face the rest of the time.
HBO judge logic for scoring is dead wrong. Says Ruslan won cuz he landed the harder more effective punches. While Ruslan did land the harder punches, they were NOT effective, cuz it did nothing to change what Algieri was doing. Effectiveness is measured in boxing by clean punches landed and Ruslan was unable to land enough of them to win rounds. If he did, then his harder punches would've had an effect on Algieri, culminating in a KO or less effectiveness from Algieri, which did not happen. Simply put, Algieri was able to control Ruslan better than Ruslan could to him. Algieri won 114-112
+Oluminati Ruslan should have used his jab more. He was timing chris all through out the rounds, he had some success but he let Chris do more activity and Ruslan just stood there dodging some of his jabs and kept looking for a KO.. which would have come if he throw more his jab and sets up his punches more instead of timing Chris to land a counter. I wasnt impressed on how chris algieri fought in here. Yeah he was good, he's doing the right thing by utilising his length and keeping Ruslan at bay. but if you observe how ruslan was slipping those jabs and how he closed in on Algieri, the only thing was missing with Ruslan was throwing those counters and throwing some body shots. Which Ruslan could have done all through out the rounds. Ruslan would kill this Algieri in a rematch. Ruslan just have this habit of being gun shy even though he was dominating a round. i dont know, he could have at least showed more activity on round 1 when chris got knock down. heck he could have pulled a tko on that round. but he pretty much just follow chris even though he was already closing their gaps.
Max provided wonderful commentary for this fight. His post fight interview summed up the fight for me: Chris was hurt and fought most of the second half of the fight with one eye but boxed incredibly.
Most ppl don’t know how to score boxing. Outside of the first round. Chris outboxed island. Chris was boxing moving landing his jab landing good solid shots. Ruslan was coming forward but Chris was blocking shots slipping rolling. Just because the crowd gets excited doesn’t mean punches are landed. The judges got it right.
If you can take a punch very well, know how to work the body and have a good chin. And brawl. Thats a perfect chemistry for a fighter to become a Champion.
Yet another example of HBO commentators not giving the lessor known fighter any credit and getting caught up in one fighter moving forward with aggression but not landing enough punches. Great boxing by Algieri.
I watched this live in 2014 with my dad and we were both scoring it. I had Algieri 114-112 and my dad had it 114-112 Ruslan, it was just so close. Like Andre Ward said, he wasn't shocked at all by the decision and I feel like neither should anyone else. Even Steve Weisfeld said the scorecard could look different than his. Algieri can fucking fight, he got some moves on him. He came back strong, I thought he won and deserved to win. Hell of a fight, hell of a fighter. I'd like to see him fight Ortiz, Berto, Rios, Broner, Guerrero.
Algeri really is sharp and boxes beautifully just a shame he doesnt have real power. but he still hits hard ENOUGH to work with as long as he gets it going early. those punches still add up and even jabs swell you up over several rounds. very sharp boxer though.
Algieri capitalized on his opportunity. It’s crazy. This fight opened the door to fight Pacquaio and he’s made over $2 million in purses since this fight.
Chris could barely keep Ruslan, who is flat footed, off of him. Manny is going to have no problem cutting off the ring and getting in close. I just hope Manny's legs doesn't give up on him and tighten up like what happen in the Bradley rematch, cause he's going to need it..
The two judges who had it 114-112 for Algieri gave him Rounds 2 and 3. That is corrupt. There is no basis to give Algieri those rounds. Algieri is a warrior but he lost this fight.
I thought the commentators were terrible. Algieri outboxed provodnikov and knocked his head back several times so I don't understand Provodnikov saying he was just jabbing me. It was a brilliant come back following the bad start. Yes Algieri has limited power but he just needs good training to get that and to pick his opponents better to get the experience, given that he was not an amateur boxer and came across from MMA. He has some nice moves just needs more experience and needs Mayweather's team to show him how to develop and get power. Manny showed up his inexperience though two of the knockdowns were slips but he still managed to go the distance with Pacquiao and hit him with a few nice lead rights (which I am sure Floyd will have noted! He definitely deserved the win!
This is what's wrong with boxing. They gave it to chris algeri because he got up and showed heart. That ain't right. The guy that really won was provodnikov. .
Algieri is a great boxer in my opinion. people criticize him and say he's weak and is untalented. Algieri has the skill to stick and move, his punches are the complete opposite of sloppy, he can cut off the ring perfectly(which he has showed in many fights), he is tough, he can fight in the inside and outside, but the only thing he lacks is punching power. His 2 losses weren't to cab drivers. Those 2 losses were to Pacquiao and Khan. He connected a lot of punches on Khan, and I felt he could've beaten Khan, but Khan displayed pure boxing skills and edged out Chris. Algieri has also beaten some decent opponents, but at the end of the day I see him as a great fighter.
Steve Weisfeld's scorecard is terrible. How can you say a fighter "is boxing very well and landing more punches" and yet not give him any credit? Provodnikov's approach to this fight was a classic example of ineffective aggression. Algieri totally outboxed him. I only gave Provodnikov rounds 1, 6 and 12.
Chris deserved to win. NO question.. He got knocked down twice and came back to win the fight.. He landed WAY more punches.. Jabbed the dude 100 times per round. Maybe he didn' thave the stronger punch but he won in a boxing contest. one hard punch doesn't equal 50 punches. He out boxed and out scored him even after getting his eye welded shut and knocked down. A Hollywood movie performance. He deserved it.
No way Provodnikov lost this fight! Provodnikov knocked down Algieri twice in this fight and was never knocked down himself. What kind of shit was this?!?
yerejay algieri compensated for those two knockdowns and OUT-scored provodnikov... boxing is about points.... if you win more rounds you win unless you're KO'd
Normally give boxer over puncher I'm close fights ie Bradley v provodknikov , Herrera v provodknikov , Herrera v Garcia ,Lara vs canelo . But I believe ruslan won this fight by 4-5 rounds with stronger shots and should have got the nod in a close fight with the knockdowns and being champion
for being a kickboxer all his life and start boxing at +30 algieri is extremely good if he have more power he would clearly win but still he landed more shots
All you who say it was a robbery are stupid, Ruslan had the first round and was up by 3 points, but Algieri adjusted and controlled the pace of the fight for the rest of the rounds, Provos power shots were far too few and Algieri flooded him with punches, a couple power shots dont win you a round if they other guy lands lands almost twice the number of punches (regardless of power.) Provo was just trying to knock him out and Algieri adjusted to that and out boxed Provo, even with right eye completely shut, Provo was way too predictable with his left hook
The skill, the will, stamina of Algieri.. Remarkable. The uppercut was there for him from the opening bell. Chopped down the body then upstairs. Methodically broke down Provodnikov. Just a perfect example of Boxing. Probably the best fight Algieri will ever have in his career. Fortunate to have witnessed it.

los jueces vieron la pelea con el ojo derecho de chris, robo tremendo!
I want to know the music that plays starting at 1:01:15. Anyone knows what it is?
Don't even care this was amazing.
This is what's wrong with boxing. They gave it to chris algeri because he got up and showed heart. That ain't right. The guy that really won was provodnikov. .
Two Rocky's ! Beautiful sport :)
Algieri has also beaten some decent opponents, but at the end of the day I see him as a great fighter.
people talk so much shit about this guy. I dont see them fighting khan or pac-man.
mastserfull boxing by algieri
You can see how algieri "woke up" after taking a knee in the 1st.
Es una pelicula muy buena
They were already promoting the Algieri Pacquiao fight. This decision is highly suspect.
That fight was a replay. The promotion was done after Algieri won over Provodnikov. They even say it at the beginning of the video.
biggest mystery in boxing...
Provo won this fucking fight.
You clearly dont understand the sport i'm afraid. You cant block punches with your face and get the win.
what a freaking joke. the boxing mafia gave algerie a big free gift, and even a bigger one by putting him vs paquiao. I used to love boxing
Best Cooked fight ever. If you are fighting in us and your opponent is from us, you need to win convincingly. Fuck boxing
beautiful boxing by algieri and provodnikov fights like the terminator lol love this fight
17:44 are we all just gonna ignore that
You cant say provod won when algieri clearly landed more shots in most of the rounds. Even freddy roach thought it was close before the last round
"Do you feel me on that creep? Now give me the left, left."
Provodnikov style of boxing is totally different from Pacquiao. Pacman is not like other boxers, He is an Elite Fighter!
The biggest leap of faith!
So good fight
Chris deserved to win. NO question.. He got knocked down twice and came back to win the fight.. He landed WAY more punches.. Jabbed the dude 100 times per round. Maybe he didn' thave the stronger punch but he won in a boxing contest. one hard punch doesn't equal 50 punches. He out boxed and out scored him even after getting his eye welded shut and knocked down. A Hollywood movie performance. He deserved it.
If what you see around 29:45 doesn't bother you, then you are a true boxing fan.
A hard earned world championship for Chris. True character, and guts.
He got messed up ruslan won the fight beat up 2 American undefeated champs
Americans are scared of Soviet Union boxing domination
How the hell did Weisman give rounds 4-7 to Provodnikov?
I miss HBO BOXING
No way Provodnikov lost this fight! Provodnikov knocked down Algieri twice in this fight and was never knocked down himself. What kind of shit was this?!?
points. That is all
yerejay Because it isnt one round.
yerejay algieri compensated for those two knockdowns and OUT-scored provodnikov... boxing is about points.... if you win more rounds you win unless you're KO'd
Provodnikov beat Bradley
for being a kickboxer all his life and start boxing at +30 algieri is extremely good if he have more power he would clearly win but still he landed more shots
epic best fight ever
I stayed up till 3 am watching only provodnikov fights and he lost all of them ....
Hes still my booooy
@@secredeath that comment always leave me dead lol worst cringe ever AND THIS IS STILL MY BOOOYYYY
Robbed multiple times
All you who say it was a robbery are stupid, Ruslan had the first round and was up by 3 points, but Algieri adjusted and controlled the pace of the fight for the rest of the rounds, Provos power shots were far too few and Algieri flooded him with punches, a couple power shots dont win you a round if they other guy lands lands almost twice the number of punches (regardless of power.) Provo was just trying to knock him out and Algieri adjusted to that and out boxed Provo, even with right eye completely shut, Provo was way too predictable with his left hook
Just because Chris eye was busted doesn’t mean that other guy should’ve won, Chris landed way more shots
awesome fight!
