Dear Leah, what a wonderful idea to quilt with tape! It simplifies the process a whole lot! I have a gigantic log cabin quilt and didn't know how to quilt it before I see your video. I tried the star in the center, and it turns out so great! And easier than stitch all the ditches, or marking the design with a ruler. I LOVE IT! Thank you so much!
Leah this quilt is MASSIVE! I see why you fixed the extra tables now.... It just beautiful!!!!! I too would love to see the back when finished
LOL! It really is! I'll share a pic of the back next week. Luckily I shot one before sending it off for a quilting adventure.
I must admit I've already started my stars from the corners (was so excited!)I got frustrated with the tape so ended up doing it one strip at a time. Yes takes a bit longer, but not so stressful. And yes I have a few lines that are as straight as the back legs of a dog but I'm really chuffed with it. Thanks so much for everything.
LOL! Straight as the back legs of a dog?! I love it! Yeah, I this is one of those things you just have to play around with. I marked two corners with tape and two others with a marking pencil and the pencil did end up faster because I didn't have to play around with it and fuss in the corners. All great experience both quilting and teaching!
Hi, Leah! Could you show us what the BACK of your quilt looks like, once you've finished it? I bet it's really interesting, with the concentric color changes, etc! Thanks!
It's honestly not all that pretty! I used a very dark backing fabric and, well, it was the first time that didn't work as well as I'd like. I'll share a picture next Monday as we finish it up completely.
Awww, bummer! It still will be cool to see -- thanks!
I love your videos! Very informative. But I have to ask, I was surprised to see you starting on the outside & working inward (on the making tape side). Could you explain why you didn't continue working outward like the 1st half? Thank you.
stayingbize i wondered about that too!
Honestly that was just a mistake in how I arranged the tape. It's hard to tape and talk at the same time and I probably got distracted and just went with it. It worked out in the end so obviously there isn't a right or wrong way to do it. Even I make mistakes, yes, even when I'm filming it!
Leah Day Thanks! I am such a beginner & still learning, I totally understand distractions though! ;) Thank you for your answer, it helps
Leah Have you ever stitched threw the tapes and then removed it???
I stitch pretty slowly so no, I've never slipped and stitched over the tape. If you do, use a ruler or long straight tool to press against the stitches and rip the bigger piece of tape away from one side. Then carefully pick the little bits out of the other side. Slow down and take your time and keep the needle running parallel with the tape.
What size stitch are you using? You are so patient, I love to watch you.
I have my stitch length set to 1.5 mm here. It's my go to stitch length for walking foot quilting.
