Some Gintama humor is hard to understand but that's because it occasionally references Japanese pop culture or makes a pun that doesn't translate. You kinda just have to roll with it until the next dick joke; those are universal!
If you do end up watching it, the first two episodes are a two-part special and complete filler. While Gintama filler is actually good and usually indistinguishable from canon, most people recommend you skip them because they were intended for people already familiar with the manga at the time and can be confusing. The series starts with episode 3: "Nobody With Naturally Wavy Hair Could Be That Bad"
