  • This documentary from the late 1950s examines the impact of immigration on Australia and looks at the part played by "New Australians" in the nation's development. Expounding the policy that "planned migration is Australia's passport to progress", the film shows how migrants have brought their skills and new ways of living, such as "open-air cafes selling cappuccinos". "New" and "old" Australians are seen working side-by-side on steel production, car assembly, the railways and the Snowy Mountains Scheme, picking fruit and cutting cane. The film also makes a highlight out of a visit to a brick suburban house and its modern kitchen, complete with wireless and mixmaster. Made by the National Film Board 1957. Directed by Peter Dimond.

A memory of the 1950's is a blonde Dutch girl who spoke little English appearing in our primary school class here in South Australia. We were asked to be friendly toward her, which we happily did, and receiving special attention from our teacher, she settled in and learnt the language quickly.

At 7.44 the girls playing netball are at Colquhoun Park, Granville NSW, my older sister used to play netball there in about that era.

Ha! - okay I'm with you now. I have not been able to find any reference to that title but in the clip it looks like they have faked the opening credits. The background map of Australia is from one of our films called Australia Today but the titles look too modern for that period. Maybe it's a lost film that's why they faked it? That program is highly edited and has used a lot of our films. Growing Child is also one of ours. I'll post it here one day. Thanks for the information.

Hi Matty Sounds like a film clip for a band? Not something we really have a lot of. So far my search is not finding anything. Will let you know if it turns up.

Who are the "New Australians"of today? Where do they head from? And how skilled and beneficial for the Auatralian society are they?

Interestingly, and contrary to much speculative commentary about immigration, by far the largest group of immigrants to Australia come from the United Kingdom. Just as it was when this film was made.

Well Bobbsey when you generalise about a group of people, in this case immigrants who actually come from many different cultures and who as individuals have many different outlooks, and subscribe to them a trait that is nothing more than your own fanciful notions - there are no "proven facts" - then you are being racist and xenophobic. Maybe that word is used so often because it's true.
